How does the stock market work?*

To better understand how the stock market works, *it helps to know that there are two types of markets
THE PRIMARY MARKET AND THE SECONDARY MARKET*

The primary market is where shares are created, and a company lists their shares through an IPO.

Remember, an IPO is when a company first lists their shares to the public.

*I see the primary stage as the point where the company is still starting up and share idea with others who put in their money to build the company*.

You will see many millionaire putting in their money (I want to buy 50% worth of this company, I want to buy 10% etc).

*The secondary market,* which is essentially the stock exchange, is where the supply and demand of these shares are bought, sold, and traded every day.

This is a stage where we (the masses can put our own urgent 2k to work).

So majority of the companies are not on primary listing again!!! Millionaires don buy am ....

*But we can buy ours from secondary listing*...any company!!! Hence you can't say I hold 50% share with mtn, you can only buy unit of shares e.g you can have 1,000,000 unit with MTN, have 10unit of shares with Airtel etc.

We have unit that is less than #10 (ten naira) if you buy 1,000 of such unit, that just 10k!!!

Companies can distribute *part of their profits to shareholders on a quarterly (every 3 months) or annual basis*. E.g MTN in April paid #10 as dividen.

This means if you have a thousand unit with MTN you get 10k (1,000x10) as dividen *and this doesn't affect your original money you used in buying the unit*

*Your original money will be intact and you will still be enjoying dividen quarterly or yearly*🔨
