Aston Villa boss Martin O'Neill was pleased with the performance of his charges despite a 1-0 loss to Austrian club Rapid Wien in the first leg of the Europa League qualifiers. "We tried to create and in so doing, when you are getting players forward, obviously you are going to leave gaps, but overall I'm pleased," O'Neill told Sky Sports. "We knew this was going to be exceptionally difficult, so will the return tie, but we are going to try to win. |
David Moyes was in a much better mood tonight after his previously poor-performing Everton side easily dispatched of Sigma Olomouc in four-goal Europa League special. Braces from Louis Saha and youngster Jack Rodwell sealed a win for the hosts ahead of the second leg in the Czech Republic. Moyes was particularly happy with the performance of 18-year-old Rodwell, whose performance as a midfield anchor proved useful not only in a defensive capacity, but allowed the England U-21 player to showcase his attacking prowess. "He showed he is a very good player. He controlled parts of the game at different times," the BBC quoted the Scot as saying. "I was surprised by his shooting - he strikes a lovely ball, but I haven't seen him rattle the the net before." Despite Rodwell becoming the Toffees' youngest ever European goalscorer, the Scottish gaffer made it known that he will continue to use young 'Hot Rod' sparingly until he becomes the finished article. "Jack has great potential and we hope he will go on to fulfill it," Moyes went on. "We will bring him along in the right way. He has a bit to go yet. We will use him in the games we see fit." Moyes went on to concede that Everton started the clash rather shakily, but through solid performances from each individual player, the team pulled themselves together and ground out an impressive win. "It was a really good response from the players. I am really pleased with the result but we still have a difficult second leg to play," he concluded. |
Real Madrid have announced that striker Alvaro Negredo will join Sevilla for an undisclosed fee in a transfer deal that includes a buyback option. While the price of the deal has not been announced, it is thought to be up in the range of €15 million, while the buyback option is valid for two seasons. Negredo had been tipped to join Hull City or Real Zaragoza, but Sevilla moved in quickly for the powerful striker after their main target, Fred, committed himself to Fluminense. The former Almeria man will arrive in Seville before the end of the day and will be presented at 13.00 (CET time) upon passing a medical with the club. Negredo, who turned 24 years of age today, last season scored 19 Liga goals, bettering his tally of 13 from the previous campaign. The 6'1" tall forward has yet to earn international recognition at any level, but a consistent run in the Sevilla side could see him deputize for the likes of Fernando Torres and David Villa. |
