The high academic standards and strenuous quality controls in Canada ensures that individuals will be enjoying high quality education that provide chances for them in the future and improve their career overtime. A lot of universities in Canada with low tuition fees offer certificate, degree and diplomas that are recognized worldwide as being at par with those obtained from commonwealth countries and the United States. While the standard of living and quality of education in Canada ranked amongst the highest in the world, the cost of living and tuition fees for international students are quite low when compared to other countries like the United Kingdom and the United States. This has left Canada as the preferred choice for students preparing to attend universities and colleges. TUITION The tuition for an academic year could cost between 5000-18,000 US dollars and is normally paid on the day of registration. Students will also need to budget for other costs and expenses like rent, books, living costs, health care, food and others. Students should also endeavor to have enough funds in their bank accounts as they will need to show evidence to the Canadian immigration that they have sufficient funds to take care of their tuition fees and living costs. The amount usually needed is at least 10,000 US dollars which should be okay to take care of living costs for a year. COST OF LIVING IN CANADA The cost of living in Canada differs and depends on the lifestyle of the students and where they choose to stay and live as certain places in large cities and urban areas like Vancouver and Montreal are very expensive. Living in Canada can cost an individual about 700-800 dollars a month and this does include tuition fees as the amount covers accommodation, food, health care and other expenses. FUNDING AND SCHOLARSHIP Students who cannot afford the tuition in Canada can apply for scholarship. Students can apply once they receive their offer of acceptance from the university. Students should have it at the back of their mind that spaces are few and competitive and should therefore send in their application as soon as possible to stand a chance. On May 29, the primary two pupil in a nursery and primary school, had accidentally fired a gun, which killed 12-year-old Oluebube Boniface. The incident occurred in the Independence Layout area of Enugu. The gun is owned by Mr. Edwin Oforma, who employed Chibuike’s mother as a cleaner and housekeeper in his house. Chibuike mistakenly fired the shot after discovering the gun in Oforma’s room while making the bed, as he was instructed by Oforma’s son, Chukwunanu. After the tragic incident, the boy was detained by the police from May 30 till July 13, when he was released. Although Chibuike’s mother, Mrs Nwakaego Oramalu, and her lawyer, Mr. Olu Omotayo, of the Civil Rights Realisation and Advancement Network, had raised the alarm over the little boy’s detention, the Enugu State Police Command alleged he was in “protective custody”. About two weeks after his release, Chibuike was arraigned before an Enugu magistrate court on Friday over alleged “conspiracy and murder”. Accident do happen and mostly a times, they are unplanned. Your safety in a foreign nation might be a thing of concern more especially to your guidance. But knowing what to do and what not to do in the face of danger will no doubt be a rewarding experience. The conventional step of staying safe is first getting familiar with your new environment yet, many students prefer staying indoors and whenever they come out, see themselves in a forbidden strange land. The street This is where eighty percent of the world crimes takes place and you, should be weary of it. Asking other students, campus security, your program director, or the international student officer for local safety information is something you must do. It helps to prepare you ahead whenever an ugly situation springs itself. Avoid traveling alone at night especially on a lonely lane, it could be dangerous and finding out which area of your town is safe and unsafe is also a measure you must take. Pickpockets are on the street looking for potential victims. Places like a crowded elevator, market place, festival etc. Are usually their operative domain. Be careful. In other to avoid encountering these jobless individuals, try and appear purposeful even when you are lost and whenever you feel the need to use the map, do that discreetly. Safety on public transport You might not have access to your personal car as an international student but depend on your two legs or public transport to get to places you want. In that case, you need to watch your belongings while on a public transport. Making sure your compartment is well locked while in a train is a must do to avoid tales of moonlight. Avoid accepting things from a stranger no matter what. Once heard a story about a tourist who got robbed and ransacked after accepting a drugged drink from a stranger in a train. In some scenarios, you might encounter them alone of a lane, or perhaps in your own apartment. When that happens, don’t ever try to fight back rather give them everything they want. Your life worth more. Even if your passport got lost or stolen, it can always be replaced. Read more: http://www.internationalopportunity.org/how-to-stay-safe-while-studying-abroad/ |
