Grammy Organisers add Best African Music Performance, two others ahead of the 66th Annual Grammy Awards



The Recording Academy has added a new music category for African music; Best African Music Performance ahead of the 66th Annual Grammy Awards.

It also announced two other additional categories—Best Alternative Jazz Album and Best Pop Dance Recording.

Additionally, the existing categories of producer of the year, non-classical, and songwriter of the year, non-classical will be moved to the general field.

The category additions and amendments were voted on and passed at the Recording Academy’s most recent semiannual Board of Trustees meeting, which was held last month.

Harvey Mason Jr., the Chief Executive Officer of the Recording Academy, said in a statement on Tuesday that the news categories represent the diverse range of relevant musical genres.

“The Recording Academy is proud to announce these latest category changes to our award process. These changes reflect our commitment to actively listen and respond to the feedback from our music community, accurately represent a diverse range of relevant musical genres, and stay aligned with the ever-evolving musical landscape,” Mason said

The addition of an award category for Africa is a recognition of recordings that utilise unique local expressions from across the African continent.

The category includes, Afro-fusion, Afro Pop, Afrobeats, Alte, Amapiano, Bongo Flava, Genge, Kizomba, Chimurenga, High Life, Fuji, Kwassa, Ndombolo, Mapouka, Ghanaian Drill, Afro-House, South African Hip-Hop, and Ethio Jazz genres.

Ibrahim Babangida, a former military Head of State, has stated that Nigerian politicians have failed to capitalize from the gains of June 12 election.

Speaking on Sunday, June 11 ahead of Democracy Day which is marked June 12 of every year, Babangida said politicians have blatantly ignored the “beauty part” of June 12, 1993 election which was highly adjudged the freest and fairest election in Nigeria.

In a statement released by his media aide, Kassim Afegbua, Babangida said;

“The gains of June 12, 1993 presidential election have not been exploited by political leaders in succeeding elections in Nigeria,” he said.
“It was adjudged the freest and fairest election in Nigeria, yet politicians have blatantly ignored that beauty; the beauty of credible elections.

“Remember, it was an election Nigerians came out en mass to choose their leaders, irrespective of their cultural/traditional and religious affiliations.

“There is thuggery in politics in Nigeria, too many litigations in Nigeria, too many issues that transparent elections ought to have addressed,” he said.

“June 12 should naturally encourage more voters to endorse democracy and election, but the turnout during our election is gradually declining,” he added.


“Right now there is voter apathy, that’s the more reason why something must be done to ensure mass participation in elections.”

Babangida says progress has been made with recent electoral reforms, but it is still a work in progress

“It is a learning curve and a work in progress. Our leaders must continue to invest their time, energy, and resources to deepen democracy and sustain democratic ideals,” he said.

Kano State Sharia court sitting in Dambare in Ungogo LGA has remanded a DJ, Ali Dan-Asabe, for disrupting studies and other activities in an Islamiyya school in the sttae.

The police dragged Dan-Asabe before the court following a complaint from the school’s management that his activities were disrupting pupils with loud music while they were having classes. The prosecutor, Inspector Bashir Wada, told the court that the DJ allegedly played music loudly to the extent that students could not hear what teachers were saying and that he also played music that was against the norms and traditions of the people of the state.

“When they complained to him, the DJ said he would not reduce and he decided to increase the volume.'' Inspector Wada told the court

The DJ pleaded guilty to the charges.

The Judge, Munzali Idris Gwadabe, ordered the remand of the DJ and adjourned the case to July 6 for sanctioning.

Speed Darlington, a Nigerian artist, has revealed why he is unable to leave his properties to a family member.

Speed Darlington, also known as Akpi, stated that he cannot rent out his properties since no one can properly care for them as he does.

In the video clip he shared, he explained how his car tyre was ruptured in several places due to the irresponsibility of the individual he let drive his car the day before.

“I no Dey like give person my thing, no one will pamper it like you do. Even family”, he said.

Furthermore, he added that he had once given his family members his car to look after and they spoilt the button of his air conditioner.

Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, have arrested members of a syndicate involved in the illicit importation and trafficking of lethal synthetic opioid, Fentanyl, a drug which is 100 times stronger than Tramadol and capable of causing mass casualty among the youth population being targeted by the cartels.

A statement released by Femi Babafemi, spokesperson of the agency today May 30, says the arrest of the two members of the syndicate: Odoh Collins Oguejiofor and Oliver Chigozie Uzoma at Ogbogwu market, Onitsha Head Bridge, Onitsha South LGA, Anambra State, in well-coordinated and clinical operations, is coming on the heels of an alert issued by the anti-narcotics Agency on Tuesday 22nd November 2022 that some criminal elements were plotting to flood the Nigerian market with the drug, which is currently responsible for over 70% overdose deaths as well as a major contributor to fatal and nonfatal overdoses in the United States. According to the CDC in the US, Fentanyl is 80 times as potent as morphine and 100 times more potent than heroin.

‘’Following credible intelligence and synergy with local and international partners, the NDLEA was able to mobilise necessary assets to trace the illicitly manufactured drug to the Ogbogwu market, Onitsha Head Bridge, reputed to be the largest drug market in West Africa, after months of undercover monitoring.

Convinced that the Agency has gathered sufficient evidence to nail the suspects, Chairman/Chief Executive Officer, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Retd) ordered a deployment of operatives to pick members of the syndicate one after the other. Odoh Collins Oguejiofor was the first to be arrested while on a business mission with packets of 100 micrograms of Fentanyl, while the arrest of Uzoma who is a major dealer in other illicitly manufactured pharmaceutical opioids including Fentanyl, followed.'' the statement in part read

Former Big Brother Naija housemate, Ifu Ennada, has revealed the reasons behind her decision to quit acting three years ago.

In a recent interview with Punch, the brand influencer and beauty entrepreneur shared the factors that led to her sudden departure from the Nigerian movie industry.

According to Ifu Ennada, she chose to take a break from acting in order to focus on her business.

She, however, noted that now that her company has the required system and structure in place, she intends to go back into acting.

“I have not been acting for about three years now. I decided to take a break to focus on my business. I wanted something that would fit my lifestyle, which I would be able to take a break from.

As an actress, one cannot do that. But, if one has a business, one can always do whatever one wants want. I could be away from my business for about a month and still be making money. Now that I have a system and structure, I intend to get back to acting. I actually have a project coming up with a producer, Martins Gbados, and hopefully, we would start this year.

Aside from that, I also want to produce my own feature film. In 2016, I produced a short film, and that was even before I went for BBN. It got me an award or two, and that was when I did not have as much resources as I do now. By next year, I intend to produce a film. I already have the story; I am just trying to get my budget right.” She said.

On why she ventured into skincare business , Ifu Ennada said,

“The reason I got into skincare was that I had a friend who was supposedly a cosmetologist from Lagos, and he talked about how my skin needed to be glowing. He gave me all sorts of product that I went into the Big Brother house with, but they damaged my skin badly and I developed cystic acne, which made me depressed. I used to cry on my bed. I tried different ways to get my skin cleared but there was no result.”

Remain calm and law abiding - Peter obi urges his supporters ahead of Tinubu’s inauguration


Ahead of today’s inauguration of President -elect, Bola Tinubu, as the 16th President of Nigeria. Peter Obi who is the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the February 25 presidential election, has called on his supporters and citizens in general to remain calm and law abiding, as only the court of law will decide the actual winner of the poll in due course.

Obi made the call while speaking at an event in Kaduna State,. Obi who is currently in court challenging the emergence of Tinubu as the winner of the election, stated that the unity, peace and security of the country is paramount than any other interest, and as such, he called on all citizens to be law abiding and work for the progress and development of the country.

“We must continue to live on the path of peace, religious harmony, ethnic harmony, coexistence, that is the most important thing for now. Let’s have a peaceful, quiet Nigeria where government will concentrate on caring for the sufferings of the people,” the LP flagbearer stated.

While noting that there are questions and issues with the last election, Obi, however, said citizens must have to live peacefully and be able to work and concentrate on facing the issues of Nigeria which is insecurity, poverty, education and other very important aspects of the nation’s existence.

Accompanied by his running mate, Senator Datti Baba-Ahmed, Obi appealed to the incoming administrations at all levels to tackle issues of high youth unemployment , poverty and insecurity especially in the Northern region.

The Serving Overseer of the Citadel Global Community Church, Pastor Tunde Bakare, has said that he will never call the President-elect, Bola Tinubu, his president.

The clergyman said this during a webinar on Saturday, May 27, after delivering his speech on the Zoom programme titled, ‘Building the New Nigeria: The Role of the Diaspora.''

Bakare had said the 2023 elections were below acceptable standards.

When asked if he would be happy to work for the new government as a ‘Minister of Diaspora Engagements,’ the clergyman laughed and spoke about how he addresses President Buhari.

Bakare said he recently told Buhari that sometimes he called him President of Nigeria and other times, he called him “My President.” 

He however said he would never refer to Tinubu as “My President.''

“Last Wednesday, I was at the Glass House where he (Buhari) has been restricted now because the main house is being renovated. I said I have done that for you. I want you to know that, because of the circumstances of your flying into power on the wings of integrity and incorruptibility, but you’re now passing onto someone who does not have that value,” the cleric told the participants.

He continued;

 “ at any public lecture anywhere, before this mess is cleared off, I will address Asiwaju as a President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria but I will never call him my president.”

He said he didn’t participate in the elections, therefore, no one would say he lost in the exercise.

Bakare, who participated in the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential primary election on June 14, 2022 and polled no vote, said;

“I participated in the primary, and there were hundreds who participated only by stepping down, so there is no shame in what we have done. We spoke truth to power within seven minutes. I wasn’t there when they voted, I wasn’t there when they scored (me) zero, but we won that badge of zero and badge of honour.”

The Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, has said that the Buhari-led government has made things better than it met it in 2015 when they assumed office. 

Speaking in an interview with Channels Television, Fashola maintained that Buhari’s government has effected changes that have impacted the economy positively, thus fulfilling the change mantra of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

“I think it a very difficult place to self-assess, but I think from the feedback that we get from those we serve. Clearly, the feedback is encouraging and it indicates that things have moved in a better direction from where we picked it up and that means that we have moved the needle. We made things better than they were and we lived our mantra of change in that sense,” Fashola said

According to him, Nigerians now spend lesser times travelling on Nigerian roads as this government has spent so much on road infrastructure.

“Travel time for example on some of the major roads when we did a survey about a year and a half ago has generally on the average reduced by about 55 percent. Subject to the inflation and cost of living increases being experienced, we also saw that cost of travel had dropped by about 55 percent around the same period when we did the survey and that is good news for the economy.” he said

Appeal court fines ex-presidential candidate N40m for seeking to stop Tinubu’s inauguration

Justice Jamil Tukur of the Court of Appeal has ordered the presidential candidate of the Hope Democratic Party (HDP) in the 2019 elections, Ambrose Owuru, to pay a fine of N40 million for filing a suit to stop the inauguration of president-elect, Bola Tinubu, on May 29.

Delivering judgment today May 25, Justice Tukur who read the lead judgment of a three-member panel of the court, held that Owuru committed a gross abuse of the court process by filing a frivolous, vexatious and irritating suit to provoke the respondents.

In the suit marked CA/CV/259/2023 and filed in April, Owuru challenged the outcome of the 2019 elections and asked the court to declare the president’s seat vacant and swear him in as the authentic winner. He prayed the court to prohibit President Muhammadu Buhari, Abubakar Malami, the attorney-general of the federation and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), from going ahead with Tinubu’s inauguration.
He argued that he was the winner of the 2019 presidential election and had not spent his tenure.
He maintained that President Buhari has been usurping his tenure of office since 2019 because the Supreme court has not determined his petition challenging the election’s outcome.

In its ruling, the court held that Owuru's grievances against the 2019 presidential election were not only strange but uncalled for because they had been pursued up to the supreme court and were dismissed for want of merit.
The appeal court held that Owuru’s bid to resuscitate the case that died in 2019 was aimed at making the lower courts go on a collision course with the supremacy of the apex court.

The court then ordered him to pay N10 million each to President Buhari, the AGF, INEC and Tinubu — the first to fourth defendants in the suit.

Minister for Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige, has said that Igbos in the country should stop playing bad politics by putting their eggs in one basket at every political dispensation. 

Speaking on Tuesday, May 23, at the commissioning of the Second Niger Bridge and the construction of capital projects by the regime of President Muhammadu Buhari, Ngige said the commissioned projects has vindicated some of them for their choice of the All Progressives Congress (APC). 

He said; 

“The first Niger Bridge was constructed in 1965 under the regime of Tafawa Belewa and that was when our brother, the late Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe was president and that is the product of that political alliance.

“During the war, some portions of the bridge were blown up with mines in order to stop the federal troops from crossing over and after the war a second bridge became imperative.

“When I was here as governor, the then president sent some contractors and said that the bridge would be built and that was in 2005. But this man (Buhari) we brought him here for campaign and I told the people of the South East that this man would construct the second Niger Bridge and rebuild Enugu Airport. We did not believe it but he did it.

“We played bad politics in 2015 and in 2019 yet the APC government brought infrastructure to the South East like the Enugu-Port Harcourt Road, Enugu-Abakaliki Road and the Federal Secretariat.

“All of us should not be in one political party, some would be here and some would be there and if some people are not in the same party with you, don’t call them saboteurs because Late Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe and even Dr Micheal Okpara did the same thing and we must come back to that old political culture that we left for long.”

The Commissioner of Police in Ebonyi State, Faleye Olaleye has warned against any protest during and after the May 29 inauguration.

The commissioner in a statement released by the state's police spokesperson, SP Onome Onovwakpoyeya, said they got an intelligence report that some individuals were planning protests over the outcome of the February 25 and March 18.

He said these individuals should wait for the court verdict. He warned that the command would not condone a breakdown of law and order in the state.

The statement added;

“Those culpable will be arrested and made to face the full wrath of the law as police operatives have been deployed strategically and directed to ensure full enforcement.”

President Buhari has said that he is happy that he will be leaving Nigeria in the competent hands of his successor, President-elect Bola Tinubu. 

While speaking at a function in Lagos state on Monday, May 22, President Buhari said he is confident that Tinubu will “strengthen the framework of Nigeria’s public-private partnership policies to accelerate the pace of her economic growth and development.”

The governor of Kaduna state, Nasir El-Rufai, has said he did not steal public funds during his two terms in office. 

DailyTrust reports that the governor said this during his final media broadcast as governor held over the weekend.

“I can swear I never stole a kobo from the government coffers. For those that say we took loans, they should look, look at their money on the ground. We didn’t collect this loan and run away to Dubai to buy houses or go to Jabi Road to build a mansion so that we can sleep well, that is not how we are.

"I became governor of Kaduna with only one house on Danja Road at Ungwan Sarki. Now am finishing to the glory of God, that is the only house I have. I didn’t build any mansion, I don’t need it.

"I didn’t steal anybody’s money and I am challenging everyone that governed this state to also come out and swear with the Qur’an that, when they governed the state, they didn’t steal a kobo of Kaduna resource that is not their entitlement.”

Governor Rotimi Akeredolu has said that states in the country have been reduced to pathetic beggars due to the 1999 constitution.

Speaking at the 59th Founders’ Day Anniversary Lecture, Award, and Endowment of the Adeyemi Federal University of Education in Ondo, the Governor who spoke through his Special Adviser on Union Matters and Special Duties, Mr Dare Aragbaiye, said the country will change for good when defective laws are amended.

Akeredolu also recommended the 1963 Republican Constitution as a veritable guide for desired development. He said;

“A defective law cannot engender peace and progress. It is, more often than not, the source of the seemingly intractable crises. There can be no development in a place where the law and its application are skewed, heavily, against the majority of the people. When the law becomes an instrument of repression, society is imperiled.

“A codification which alienates the people from its intendment is not only repressive but also fraudulent. There can be no meaningful achievement from the existence of a set of regulations whose purpose is to sustain the privileges enjoyed by a parasitic few at the detriment of the majority.

“The subversion of the people’s will cannot engender progress in any society if the essence of development is the amelioration of the challenges faced by them.

“Any law which imposes the whims and caprices of a select but partisan few on the majority of the people cannot be used to advance the cause of the society.

“If there is any document whose existence represents an experiment in audacious mendacity, it is this so-called Constitution of the people of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“The Constitution tells manifest lies against itself. It purports to represent the wishes of the Nigerian people but nothing can be farther from this obvious lie.”

A video making rounds on social media shows the funny moment a popular Ghanaian spiritualist attempted to fly like a bird on live TV.

The spiritualist showed off his ‘flying’ prowess in an interview with Ghanaian TV host, Arnold Mensah, held in an open field.

Arnold was evidently surprised by his statement but indulged him and told him to fly. Surprisingly, the spiritualist raised his hands like he was spreading his wings, and told the presenter “I’m gone”.

The presenter, who tried hard to hold back his laughter, queried the spiritualist for claiming to have flown away despite remaining in the same position.

In response, the spiritualist defended himself, saying Arnold could not see him fly because he doesn’t have spiritual eyes.

Two employees of Pizzaman have been sentenced to 5 years imprisonment for stealing 20 boxes of chicken wings and two gallons of cooking oil from the company


Two employees of Pizzaman, Seidu Karim and Rashid Abdullah, have been sentenced to 5 years imprisonment for stealing 20 boxes of chicken wings and two gallons of cooking oil from the company's warehouse located at Nyankyerenease in Kumasi, Ghana. 

Prosecuting officer, ASP Jonas Newlove Adjei told the court presided over by H/H Fred Obekyere Esq, that on Monday May 1, 2023, the complainant who is the executive chef of Pizzaman received a call from his warehouse manager that two cooking oil and eight boxes of chicken wings have been stolen.

The chef upon hearing the news quickly went to take their daily stock and discovered that indeed the items had been stolen.

In an emergency meeting the same day, workers were asked to provide the stolen items. 

Upon interrogation, Rashid Abdullah said he saw Seidu Karim hiding two gallons of Oki cooking oil behind the fence wall. 

Seidu Karim in his defense stated that he saw Rashid Abdullah hiding two boxes of chicken wings at the back of the fence wall as well.

The stolen items were retrieved from them and they were later handed over to the Asuoyeboah police command where investigations were conducted.

In the course of investigations, Seidu Karim confessed that in a period of two months he had stolen twenty (20) gallons of Oki cooking oil from the company.

The accused persons were charged with the offense and were sentenced to 5 years imprisonment in hard labor each by the Kwadaso Circuit Court.

The National Population Commission plans to meet with the President-elect, Bola Tinubu, even before his inauguration to discuss possible new dates for the population and housing census.

This follows the announcement on Saturday by the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, that the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), had approved the indefinite postponement of the census earlier slated for May 3 to 7, 2023.

The minister said the incoming administration would now determine the new date.

Sunday PUNCH gathered from a top official of the NPC on Saturday that the commission’s top hierarchy would be meeting with Tinubu in the coming days to brief him on the postponement, gauge his reaction and possibly a feedback from him on when the census would now hold.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to one of our correspondents, said, “We don’t have anything else to say other than what the Minister of Information and Culture said in his statement. That is the position of the Federal Government.

“The only thing I can add to that is that the commission will engage the incoming President even before his inauguration on May 29. Just like we have been having engagements with the outgoing administration, we will meet with His Excellency, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, on the new date for the census to gauge his feeling and know the direction in which he wants to go, but we are not in a position to suggest a date to him.”

The announcement of the postponement of the headcount followed a meeting with some Federal Executive Council members by the Chairman of the NPC, Nasir Kwarra, and his team at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Friday.

Mohammed said, “In arriving at the decision to postpone the census, the meeting reiterated the critical need for the conduct of a population and housing census 17 years after the last census, to collect up-to-date data that will drive the developmental goals of the country and improve the living standard of the Nigerian people.”

The minister quoted the President as noting that with the completion of the Enumeration Area Demarcation of the country, the conduct of first and second pre-tests, the recruitment and training of ad hoc workers, procurement of Personal Digital Assistants and ICT infrastructures, appreciable progress had been made in the implementation of the 2023 Population and Housing Census.

He also commended the methodology being put in place by the commission to conduct an accurate and reliable census, especially the deployment of technology capable of delivering world-class census and laying a sustainable basis for future censuses.

Buhari directed the NPC to continue preparing for the census to sustain the gains already recorded and provide anoperational base for the incoming administration.

Friday’s meeting was attended by the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr Abubakar Malami; the Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Mrs Zainab Ahmed; Mohammed; Minister of State,  Budget and National Planning, Mr Clem Agba; and the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Mr Boss Mustapha.

The census was initially scheduled for 2022 but was shifted to March this year, but because of the general election, it was postponed to May.

At a meeting with members of the diplomatic corps on April 27 in Abuja, Kwarra disclosed that the commission had yet to procure all the devices required for the census.

Meanwhile, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the just concluded general election, Peter Obi, has lauded the postponement of the census by the Federal Government.

Obi said on Saturday that the postponement was a welcome development and had become necessary to ensure proper planning and diligence.

Reacting to the development, Obi via his Twitter handle, stated that although Nigeria was “long overdue” for a census, “conducting one requires proper planning and diligence to ensure the sanctity of the results; the efficacy of the data gathered there from, as well as their utility in driving national development goals.

“It is hoped that when eventually the census is conducted, it will serve as confidence-building measures instead of being fraught with the usual controversy.”

Similarly, the Governor of Benue State, Samuel Ortom, in a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Terver Akase, on Saturday, lauded Buhari for approving the postponement of the census
