Celebrities / Vector Finally Opens Up On His Troubles With YSG Entertainment by Erave: 7:11pm On Nov 09, 2015
Not too long ago, the once rewarding relationship between prolific rapper, Vector and his erstwhile label, YSG turned into a discussion that engulfed the Nigerian music scene.

The label had filed an injunction against Vector at the Federal High Court, Ikoyi, Lagos for ‘persistent breach of contract’ which affected the rapper from recording, composing or releasing any material as a recording artiste.

Vector who was with the label for five years complained that the label was not giving adequate attention to his career and that the label also refused to hire professionals that will properly help manage his career. Celebrities / Golden Eaglets Make History With U-17 World Cup Win | Watch Match Highlights by Erave: 1:11pm On Nov 09, 2015
Nigeria became only the second side to retain the FIFA U-17 World Cup after an impressive 2-0 win against Mali in Vina Del Mar, Chile. Victor Osimhen stole the show once again thanks to his record-breaking tenth goal of the tournament, with Funsho Bamgboye adding a second moments later. Samuel Diarra had saved an early Osinachi Ebere penalty as the Malians played their part in an entertaining finale to Chile 2015.
The penalty came as both sides were just finding their rhythm in the opening exchanges, Chato the culprit with a handball. Ebere saw his low effort saved brilliantly by Diarra, the No17's follow up header hit the bar before a third bite of the cherry was blocked by the Malian defence.
Both sides had chances in a tense opening period, with Golden Eaglets skipper Kelechi Nwakali hitting just wide and Boubacar Traore seeing his glancing header tipped over by Akpan Udoh.
The second half saw the game burst into life, with Emmanuel Amuneke's words clearly working their magic on the Nigerian youngsters. Osimhen shrugged off the challenge of Mamadou Fofana before hitting a wonderful dipping half volley towards goal, which Diarra spectacularly saved. Udochukwu Anumudu then smashed a thunderous effort at goal, which rebounded back off the crossbar and was cleared away.
Mali did not heed those warnings. Good approach play by substitute Chinedu Madueke saw him tee up Osimhen for his record-breaking goal, seeing him surpass the nine goals scored by Florent Sinama Pongolle in 2001 and Souleymane Coulibaly ten years later.
The holders doubled their advantage mere minutes later, with Bamgboye bursting down the Nigerian left before smashing a powerful effort at goal, Diarra standing little chance.
Despite a couple of late chances for Mali, from corner kicks, Nigeria retained possession for large spells and saw the game out to retain their crown. The jubilant scenes on the final whistle in Vina Del Mar will surely live long in the memories of these Nigerian heroes of the present, some of whom may just become the stars of the future.

Celebrities / Audu Maikori: Brymo Can Return To Chocolate City by Erave: 1:24pm On Nov 06, 2015
Known for his characteristic beard look, legal practitioner cum music business executive, Audu Maikori recently assumed a new role as the President of Chocolate City Music Group, a label he took from nothing to becoming one of the most sought after music groups in Nigeria.

In this interview with ERAVE correspondent, Idris Aina, Audu Maikori opens up on the age long court tussle with former Chocolate City act, Brymo, copyright infringement, his perspective of Chocolate City and other pertinent issues.

Since MI became the CEO of Chocolate City, has it changed your perspective about the label in anyway?

Of course yes. I can see things that I never saw before and I am learning new things that I never had time to do before. What we are doing at the label is partnership and right now, what I do is review the activities and also give necessary inputs on areas where we can improve. My new role gives me a different perspective of things on the label generally.

What are your roles now at the label?

I am not involved in the day to day running of affairs of the label but I am very involved in the general visioning of what the company does in terms of positioning and achieving our set goals. Aside that, I am also in charge of the other subsidiaries. Apart from the music label, there is a media company, there is a Kenyan office and there is also the distribution company. My job is to make sure they are all functioning, make profit and also align with our set mission and vision.

Chocolate City Music Group recently announced that the label will venture into movie production. Should we expect any film soon?

We have a second company called Chocolate City Media, there is another one named Chocolate City Distribution and Chocolate City Kenya. The 4 companies have its different goals, aims to achieve. For the media arm, we focus on content creation and the movie has been something we are very excited about over the years. There are plans to release our first feature film and we have made some sort of progress in that regard. We now have a script and we are going into the other technical parts to sign the proper agreements with every other parties involved from the cast to crew members.

Will any artist on the label feature in the film?

Yes of course but it is not just about the label. The label is the manifestation of the brand but the industry is the true manifestation of the brand. So, we need to take into cognizance what appeals to everyone across the industry and not our artistes alone.

Do you see the label telling the story of any of its artistes through a film in few years?

We thought about doing a sort of docu-movie but I don’t think we are there yet. I think we have done some good works but I think there is much more we can do. We want to take some more time to work.

Celebrities / Etcetera: Should Nigerian Entertainers Pay Tax? by Erave: 12:02pm On Nov 01, 2015
For the record, this article is not meant to give celebrities who don’t pay their taxes a pass. I think we all should pay what we legally owe, including those whose work puts us on the big screen, the sports field or in the recording studio.

But I do have an understanding of the multitude of reasons celebrities give for not paying tax. And I think you should too.

The Nigerian tax system is totally messed up… yes, messed up in all ramifications. I concur with the argument that monies generated from taxes in Nigeria are not judiciously used by the government. Or we haven’t seen what the money is being used for.

When singer and actress Lauryn Hill and other American artists pleaded guilty and even got incarcerated for tax evasion, a lot of you must have asked: “Why can’t our celebrities pay taxes like their American counterparts?”

But the real question is, how many Nigerians pay tax? As you are reading this article, I can bet that you probably don’t know where the LIRS or FIRS offices are in your local government.

So before you all jump on the government-must-tax-Nigerian-entertainers bandwagon, a few important points are worth noting.

Most Nigerian entertainers are evading tax, not because they intentionally want to, but because they don’t know their taxable income. Likewise, the Nigerian government, through all its tax agencies, is losing billions of naira every year from the entertainment industry because they are yet to discover a proper structure for taxation of the industry.

I know it seems like a great thing to take home a million-naira plus pay cheque for singing a song, starring in a TV show or making a movie. And I’m sure the financial perks and other benefits of stardom aren’t lost on celebrities. But think for a moment about what it must be like to get one or two big cheques a year (either lump sums, advances or royalties) and then have to manage that money wisely all year long, maybe not knowing when the next cheque will come in.

Most people in Nigeria are wage earners or businessmen and women who get regular cheques once a month or daily money from their businesses. Some employees in the oil sector might get paid twice a month. Overall, the average person who’s working can count on a pretty steady pay cycle. But that’s not the case with entertainers. Sure, they get their paydays – big ones, in fact. But when they get paid, it’s like receiving a huge financial windfall. And we all know what happens with most windfalls. They blow the money. Despite all the bling and the perceived glamour that come with being a celeb, the truth is that it’s tough being a celebrity and keeping your finances straight.

There’s also the issue of financial oversight. Most naija celebs don’t know what to do with their money when they get paid for gigs or appearances. Some have gone broke for trusting the wrong people to handle their money or to give them financial advice, that’s why a lot of artists who once lived comfortably have pretty much kissed their riches goodbye.

Being a celebrity anywhere in the world means you’re constantly in the spotlight. That additional scrutiny doesn’t just come from the public or the media. Celebrities, with their “I’m-living-large” lifestyles and their out-sized pay cheques, are also prime targets of fraudsters.

In fact, if you’re a public figure who is routinely taking home cheques in the six, seven and eight figures range, you have pretty much put a bull’s eye on your back when it comes to the tax collectors. Simply put, the tax authorities in Nigeria know they cannot make an example out of celebrities for tax evasion. Nigerians generally don’t believe in paying tax and coupled with corruption in the system, it is hard convincing a Nigerian to remit a chunk of his or her earnings as tax to a corrupt government.

Celebrities / ‘my Mental State Was A Total Mess’, Banky W Shares Inspiring Story by Erave: 8:34pm On Oct 28, 2015
Business tycoon and Empire Mates Entertainment label executive, Segun Demuren is a year older on Tuesday, October 27, 2015.

Few hours ago, music star, Banky W took to photo sharing app, Instagram to share a touching story highlighting his journey from rock bottom to super stardom written specially to celebrate Segun Demuren’s 40th birthday.

Read his inspiring story below.

About @segundemuren: The morning of Jan 1st 2009 was one of the worst of my life. I went to Church the night before to pray in the New Year… and there I poured my heart out to God. You see, i moved back to Lag on Feb 14th 08. It was a tough decision quitting my well-paid engineering job in NYC and moving back, but I felt incomplete and unfulfilled. That decision however, led to a tough year.

I had gained some small popularity in music, but fame comes way before fortune in my line of work. So yes there were videos on TV, but I was flat out broke. I’d spent all my savings on my music business… I was driving a beat down car that broke down on every possible major road in Lagos, and I had resorted to “borrowing” 5k from my manager weekly, to fuel my car and buy recharge cards.

I’d started second guessing my decision. Should I have moved back at all? Should I have listened to folks and stayed in NYC? It was hard. I wasn’t getting any show bookings, in fact Segun & I used to show up to events way early just to make sure we could get inside, and times without number we would beg & plead to get 5 mins to perform on shows only to get turned down. I was frustrated.

Why wasn’t my music working here? Why couldn’t people see what we saw? Maybe I wasn’t meant to be here? And then after church that morning, I got accosted by armed robbers, driven around on the joy-ride-from-hell, roughed up, and robbed of everything on me. Phones, money, jewelry, iPod, hat, shoes, u name it. They kept threatening to shoot me, but I just kept praying psalm 91 and somehow I made it home to Segun’s house in one piece. And while I was grateful to be alive, I sunk into further depression.

For a week plus I wouldn’t leave my room. I felt like my whole world had come crashing down, and like I had nothing to show for all my effort and prayers. And then Segun walked into my room and said “hey bro… I know it’s really bad right now. But the good news is, this is rock bottom. U have hit it, and ur still alive. It can only get better from here, but U can’t let it defeat U. U gotta get up, dust it off, and channel all that nervous energy into making music again!!” I was in shock…
