Celebrities / Desmond Elliot: Why I Hid My Yoruba Identity From Nollywood by Erave: 11:38am On Oct 23, 2015
DESMOND ELLIOT:Ramsey Nouah wasn’t nice to me the first time I met him

When actor Desmond Elliot came out with Sola as his Yoruba name ahead of the 2015 Lagos State House of Assembly election, it was largely seen as a deliberate move to win sympathy from the electorate. But he carried on and won as a representative of Surulere Constituency. OLUSHOLA RICKETTS met with the actor turned-politician recently at a filmmakers’ forum in Lagos.

A fortunate child
Luck comes the way of some people easily and Desmond Elliot sees himself as one of those fortunate people in life. His journey into acting was rough, though he says; he has always been a lover of movies right from where he grew up in Jos, Plateau State. Growing up in the north perhaps better explains why his Yoruba language appears half-baked and the reason a lot of people didn’t think he is one when he came out publicly to say so.
He says, “They wanted to know where the name Olusola came from, but all that is gone now. It was an election to be determined by people in my constituency and those were the people who know me from home. So, I wasn’t really bothered by what people were saying.

I am born of a Yoruba father, my mother is an Igbo, I grew up in the north and my wife is from Akwa Ibom.” The beauty of having a mixed background, he notes, is that it allowed him to appreciate different cultures and see everyone as the same even in our diversity. “It is also helpful in the field of filmmaking and acting that I choose.”

From Sola Elliot to Desmond Elliot

A South African soap opera, Egoli challenged Elliot. He would always say to himself “I would love to be like Steve.” Steve was a character in the production. Being a church boy too, he was in the drama group and people got to notice his acting skills. They thought he was excellent and a good friend kept advising him.

He narrates, “He would always come around when the move was playing and he would say Sola you can do this. They called me Sola at home, but I realised most producers then were from the east and I felt that using Sola could make things difficult. I didn’t really understand why I decided to use Desmond at that point.

It is not a stage name; it is my English name. That was how Sola Elliot changed to Desmond Eliot. If anyone calls me Sola now I know the person knows me from home, but if I hear the Desmond I know it is when I started acting.”

Becoming an actor

Elliot’s degree was in Economics at the Lagos State University, so he didn’t have a background in films. When he started acting in 1999, almost 16 years ago, it took him about eight months to get a job. His mother kept wondering where he was always going every day, from morning till evening.

After about the eighth month, she queried him. He remembers, “My mother said Sola you go out every day, we’ve not seen money and we’ve not seen films. What do you go out to do? I just kept telling her it would be fine. But my father had serious faith and confidence in me.”

While he kept looking for opportunities in movies endlessly, he tried other things, including modelling. And in 1999-2000, he got a Tom-Tom (candy) commercial job. “I was picked last. I was very skinny and rough; it was obvious I was hungry. I saw that as a favour from God and that actually gave me hope because I was paid well. It was a Tom- Tom’s zebra crossing commercial.” Although he concedes, he wasn’t good as others, he kept pushing on with the mind-set that he would get his chance.

Then, the popular audition grounds were at Surulere, Lagos, and that was like a bonus for him because he resided in the neigbourhood. Every morning, Elliot was often among the first five to arrive for auditions. He tried this for a year without any meaningful gains.

When he got a chance to star in his first movie produced by Emeka Ani, there was still a dilemma. Ani told Elliot and his friend, Tuvi James, to decide who between them should be part of the production. The character was to play about three scenes.

He states, “I and Tuvi were not too close, but I pleaded with him because he had been featuring in productions. We struggled about it a bit and my promise to him was that in the future I would pay him back. It was just the hope that someday I would return it and that was a sincere promise. The tittle of the movie was The Challenge and I went to set every day to see how things were done since I had no idea how it worked.”

Meeting Ramsey Nouah

From the bit role he played in The Challenge, he started introducing himself to people, including Nouah. Recalling vividly his first interaction with Nouah, he says his look when he attempted to shake him wasn’t pleasant. According to him, Nouah was playing one Jamaican song in his car and he left where everyone was seated to meet him.
“Now, it is funny how I see other young actors come to me. They call me by character name and try to explain the role they are playing just the way I introduced myself to Nouah then. It is now a conscious effort to be nicer because truth be told he wasn’t really nice to me.
He just said okay and he continued listening to his song,” he narrates. But, Elliot maintains that one shouldn’t be quarrelsome, stressing that one should be prepared to meet people with different ideas, characters and spirits. “Don’t be quarrelsome because message spread faster. The fact that people felt I was humble worked for me, though they would never give you a bad or hard man’s role.”

Celebrities / Who Will Marry Linda Ikeji? – Omonike Omuya by Erave: 8:40pm On Oct 19, 2015
Tell me that thought didn’t occur to you, the typically traditional Nigerian you, when you saw pictures of what to over half the population could be described as a mansion. I mean it puts into context what rich is or at least what rich can get you and just as firmly it puts into context what being a woman can be, beyond being someone’s woman.

I was walking down a London high street yesterday, when I spotted a black woman wrapped in a long black and white tweed jacket and almost knee- high black boots. Something about her short jerry curled hair reminded me of someone whose storyline sparked angst in my head and I broke out in hives of protest, shooting a sudden question at my companion; “why do women follow a man just to live in another country? Why do young girls follow a man to get phones, hair extensions, clothes, shoes, bags, a diamond engagement ring, cars, accommodation, and placement for jobs… even an identity? Why do they think they can’t get it, whatever their “it” is, on their own?”

It’s saddening because it says to me that those women don’t realize their power. They suffer in the wrangle holds of compromise for lack of self knowledge; exchanging their best lives- the one they can have on their terms- for somebody’s season of youthful debauchery at best or mid life crisis at worst. They don’t believe they can have it on their own, they don’t believe in themselves and the loss of that childlike faith is not worth the glam of the nonexistent fab lane they seek to get on.

What is funny is that the wide gulf will thin out over time between say, a student who gets through school as the “reigning babe” because of a rich man who buys her the “big girl” look and the student who patiently waits and with hard work gets there maybe a decade later at what I would call the right time. By then the former would be living in the shadow of her glory days which only fizzle in and out as the subject of occasional gossip, if anyone cares to remember at all.

One question that has chased women who have attempted to get more back into the shadows of learned helplessness is the lie that you have to choose between the happiness of fulfillment and the happiness of being someone’s woman. That there are no other options, you can only eat your cake or eat your cake, you can’t cut your cake in half and have one now and the other later.

It is that fear that begets the question; “who will marry me when I pursue my own life and realize my potential?”. My answer is, it is likely someone who knows their power as well, someone who deserves you. And not just you as in female but you as you’ve come to know yourself to be- woman and powerful.

So the real question then isn’t “who will marry Linda Ikeji?”. The real question is “who will Linda Ikeji marry?”

Celebrities / Fuji Act, K1 Allegedly Shuns Police Summon Over Shooting Incident by Erave: 8:11pm On Oct 19, 2015
The police in Ogun State are still waiting for popular Fuji musician, Wasiu Ayinde to honour an invitation sent to him by the command for interrogations over the alleged shooting of an undergraduate by one of his band boys at Ago Iwoye, Ogun State.
According to a report by Vanguard, checks revealed that the musician travelled to London shortly after he was summoned by the Police over the incident.
A female student of Olabisi Onabanjo University, Kofoworola Azeez, was hit in the right buttock by a stray bullet allegedly fired by one of the members of the fuji musician’s band, at a musical show at a hotel at Ago Iwoye.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, had said that the victim sat inside an unregistered Honda car parked beside NASFAT building, opposite Limelite Hotel, in the town, where he performed.
The police command had summoned him to appear for interrogation.
According to Adejobi, the police wanted to get more facts by interrogating the musician, so as to get to the root of the matter. He said the command was told that the musician had left for overseas.
Adejobi, however, said that any time Wasiu Ayinde returned from the trip, he would still be required to honour the invitation, to help the police in the investigation into the case, with a view to unravelling who really fired the bullet that hit Kofoworola.
The PPRO did not, however, disclose the name of the musician’s lawyer, saying the musician had sent his lawyer to the Police Command.
He said: “Wasiu Ayinde did not come to the command’s headquarters last Thursday as expected for interrogation. He sent his lawyer to the Area Commander in Ijebu Ode, saying he had travelled to London.
“However, any time he returns, we are still expecting him to honour the invitation for him to come and write a statement on what he knew about the shooting.”
Efforts by ERAVE to reach the camp of the fuji act for comments is still ongoing.

Celebrities / Nollywood Has Lost A True Friend In Alamieyeseigha – Peace Anyiam-osigwe by Erave: 2:45pm On Oct 12, 2015
The death of Chief Diepreye Alamieyeseigha, DSP as he was fondly called former governor of Bayelsa State, is a sad day for me as Pmo Anyiam-Osigwe but also for the African Movie Academy Awards family. DSP ALAMIEYESEIGHA for many people was a man with many faults but in the 11 year journey of which 8 AMAA’s held in Bayelsa, the journey with DSP was the most orderly one, he was very principled once he gave an appointment he would keep to it, if he delayed you he was apologetic, he spent quality time with guests we took to Bayelsa always describing the potentials of the state to any and every one, He was a proud IJAW MAN.

We have lost a true friend of Nollywood and African Cinema today, he loved the creative industries, post his troubles he kept in constant touch to see how AMAA was doing, and how was PMO doing. DSP , Daddy, Governor General of the Ijaw nation was a man of Peace in his own way, regardless of the faults or the allegations of corruption it will not stop from saying the good of this great friend of mine. The Ibo’s have a saying ‘onye Arah were enyi’ this translates to ‘a mad man has friends for all his faults’ DSP was my friend and I will never deny him or stop saying the good about him , I will honestly say that Bayelsa has lost a rare Gem, DSP was loyal to a fault, It is important to note that DSP was stripped of all he had, and even friends that he helped never tried to give back to him, when we talk he will tell me that it is important to count those you call friends with one hand.

He lost his son last year in DUBAI in circumstances no body explained to him, I wish people will follow the understanding of Death and not speak ill of the DEAD, many may not know him but ALAMS is not as bad as he was made to look. Without him AMAA would have taken much longer to come into existence.

10th OCTOBER has become a sad day for us at AMAA, 2013 We lost Gabriel Patrick, Today ALAMS.

Aunty Margret and my brothers and sisters, the Good People of Bayelsa State we have lost an Officer and a Gentleman.

Regardless of what anyone will say DSP was a good soul REST IN PEACE ALAMS, REST DSP, REST DADDY, REST MY GOOD FRIEND!.

Celebrities / Aisha Buhari And The Aso Rock Chapel – Toni Kan by Erave: 7:18pm On Oct 10, 2015
Where are you worshipping tomorrow?’ my friend asked me as he left my hotel room that night in Abuja.

‘I will pray here in my room,’ I said.

‘Come worship with us at the Aso Rock chapel,’ he invited.

My first impulse was to say ‘no thank you’ but then I realised that there could be a story there so I said yes.

Now, I have been labelled anti-APC on account of my interventions on www.sabinews.com and other platforms. The charge is wrong and false but protesting will only suggest guilt even though my interventions are always driven by the exigencies of the situation and context.

Now, I had an ulterior motive in saying yes that night. My intention was to carry out a very ‘anti-APC act’; look around and find out whether Mrs. Aisha Buhari, wife of the President had really turned the Aso Rock chapel into a spa or store as I had read on many social media platforms.

I, like many others had read the report and was affronted. How dare she turn a place of worship into a beauty salon? No one asked whether the rumor was true or not, Mrs. Buhari was guilty by reason of past conduct; once a spa owner always a spa owner.

So, there I was at the Aso Rock pilot gate at 7.43am where I joined the throng of people I saw on their way to worship at the chapel situated right inside the seat of power. My friend had come down with diarrhea and couldn’t make it after inviting me.

There were perfunctory questions at the Pilot gate but because it was Sunday and we were going to church, there wasn’t much scrutiny. I showed my phone, my tape recorder and my camera and then was cleared after my details had been taken down.

Outside, I looked up at the bright sun and long walk and baulked. I was still limping from a healing fracture and had not factored in the long walk but I was in luck, a couple driving by saw me limping and offered me a lift to the main gate where there was another perfunctory check.

Once inside the compound that houses the residence and offices of the first lady, you will find a winding tree lined pave-locked drive way bordered on both sides by masquerade trees.

There are green well-tended lawns and flower hedges on both sides of the ten feet wide driveway. The lawns on the right lead up to a cluster of white buildings which are clearly demarcated by a metal fence.

To the left is a heart shaped flower hedge which leads to the offices of the First Lady which must no longer be officially in use since there is no office of the First Lady in the present administration.

There is no fence to your left but worshippers arriving on foot, have to ease off the driveway and walk down a winding corridor for about 40 meters to the entrance of the chapel.

If you walk all the way to the end of the driveway, you will arrive at the First Lady’s kitchen and pantry. Beyond that and to your left is a tennis court complete with seats and further beyond is a mini zoo with giraffes and zebras and peacocks enjoying the sun. To the right of the mini zoo is a small mosque with a loud speaker to your right on the roof. The mosque a guard, I spoke with, told me was used for storage under the GEJ administration.

Retracing your steps from the mosque to the chapel, you will find a line of cars from pick-up vans marked Catering to those emblazoned with Police but there are also regular looking cars parked by worshippers all the way from the chapel to the end of the driveway.

I hobbled around, phone to my ear, as I took surreptitious shots, while I waited for the service to begin.

Celebrities / Rukky Sanda: Nigerian Men Are Romantic In Their Own Ways by Erave: 3:23pm On Oct 09, 2015
Born Rukayat Akinsanya in Ikorodu- Lagos, Rukky Sanda is an actress, scriptwriter and producer. She is often referred to as one of the controversial actors since she debuted in Nollywood in 2004.

With 17 movies in her production kitty, she remains one of the several Nollywood acts who have etched their name in the history books of the Nigerian Entertainment scene.

In this interview with ERAVE, Rukky Sanda bears her mind on her newly released movie- Dark, her plans to produce her first Yoruba movie, her kind of man and other pertinent issues.

What inspired the title of your new movie, Dark?

I was actually at home writing the script when I got the insight to use the name Dark. It was just natural with nothing else attached to it. The movie featured top stars such as Adunni Ade, Van Vicker, Monalisa Chinda and more.

What informed the choice of your cast and how easy was it to get them on set?

Well, while I was gathering thoughts for the concept of the movie, I thought of Van Vickerand informed him about it, and then we got started from there. As for Monalisa, she came in along the way. Every other person was brought in as the casting continued. Adunni particularly, brought her son in when we needed a teenager for a certain role; and we actually audition about fifty children. Adunni actually did a great job and also had a wonderful performance all through. Working with some of the kids was quite challenging but we eventually surmounted every difficulty.

In times past, your movies have addressed relationship issues. Is the attempt a deliberate one?

I love writing about relationships but I really don’t know why. Dark is entirely different because it’s a thriller dotted with so much of things expected in a thrilling movie.

You have virtually produced English speaking movies since your production debut; do you have plans to shoot a Yoruba speaking movie some day?

(Laughs) I have that in mind because I am an executive producer but I really need to be sure I’m going to get my money back. I don’t understand how their market works and I have actually spoken to the platform I sell my movies to so as to know how much they buy Yoruba movies plus some other information. So if I get the proper network, I will do it. I actually have a script I’m supposed to do with Ramsey Nouah. However, it’s not a full Yoruba film, but it’s a Yoruba setting. I really don’t know how I’m going to do the full one yet. Although, I speak Yoruba but it’s not all the time. Yoruba films are amazing, so I’m going to do it when the time comes.

Considering the fact that you mentioned not speaking Yoruba often, how fluent is your Yoruba?

Very fluent. Remember I’m a Lagos girl.

You have produced 17 movies since you made your debut. What informed your decision to venture into movie production so early in your career?

Well, basically for me, it was more of the business aspect of it at the time because I have always believed in investment. I’m a business person since my childhood days. So, when I decided to go into production, people did not give me the right information on how to go about it. They would tell you a ridiculous amount so you’ll freak out; that was the way it was for me. My first movie, obviously did not work out as expected.
