6 Weeks After, Ag. IGP Usman Alkali Baba’s Appointment Continues to Raise Dust

Six weeks after President Muhammed Buhari appointed the new acting Inspector General of Police (IGP), Usman Alkali Baba as announced by Muhammad Maigari Dingyadi, the Minister of Police Affairs, the dust is yet to settle on the matter.

Though Usman Alkali Baba has since April 6, 2021 replaced Mohammed Abubakar Adamu whose tenure had ended in February but got extended for 3 months, Nigerians especially the human rights community including activists, lawyers and other stakeholders continue to query the appointment for many reasons.

First, many Nigerians had criticised the appointment immediately after it was announced on the ground that it was yet another sensitive appointment given to a Northerner, further fueling apprehensions about alleged nepotistic imbalance in the split of security chief appointments in Nigeria between the South and the North regions.

As at May 21, 2021, available data shows that from a regional analysis of Nigeria’s security agency chiefs, including paramilitary and anti-graft, the North has 12 out of 16 (75%) while only 4 (25%) are headed by a Southerner.

A closer look reveals that the following 12 agencies are headed by a Northerner – NDLEA (Adamawa), EFCC (Kebbi), Federal Fire Service (Niger), Army (Kaduna), Navy (Kano), DSS (Kano), NIA (Katsina), Immigration (Jigawa), Customs (Bauchi), FRSC (Kwara), Civil Defence (Nassarawa), and Police (Yobe).

Agencies headed by Southerners are ICPC (Ondo), Correctional Services (Delta), Air Force (Osun) and Defence (Delta). This obvious slant continues to fuel agitations against perceived marginalization and domination of the security architecture in favour of one region of the nation against the other.

Abeokuta Fatgbems Station Exposed For Selling Water As Petrol


It was quite shocking over the weekend when a journalist, Adeola Fayehun, raised an alarm that popular filling station, Fatgbems filling station was dispensing water to unsuspecting motorists instead of premium motor spirit popularly called petrol.

In a viral video now making the rounds, one could see water clearly oozing from multiple petrol nuzzles taken out of fuel tanks at the Fatgbems fueling station. In the heat of the commotion, angered motorists who were concerned that the water already dispensed to them as petrol must have damaged their automobile engines were also heard expressing shock and disbelief at the strange development.

Popular Pastor Jailed for Stealing Church’s $90,000, N4.5m

THECONSCIENCE reports that a Lagos State Special Offences Court in Ikeja has sentenced a popular pastor of the Living Faith Church, aka Winners’ Chapel, Afolabi Samuel, to three years’ imprisonment for stealing $90,000 and N4.5m belonging to the registered trustees of the church.

Samuel, who is an accountant and the church’s treasurer, was arraigned before Justice Mojisola Dada on two counts of conspiracy and stealing by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

According to the EFCC, the popular pastor and one Blessing Kolawole, an employee of the Covenant University, who is currently at large, conspired and dishonestly stole the money and converted the same to their personal uses.

Seplat Petroleum’s legal tussle with Access Bank has suffered a setback.

A Lagos Federal High Court, today, struck out an application filed by the oil company, Seplat Petroleum Development Company, seeking to varied an order of mareva injunction freezing its account and sealing its offices.

In striking out the application, Justice Rilwan Aikawa, who presided over the court, virtually, said the plaintiff, Access Bank Plc, through its counsel, Mr. Kunle Ogunba (SAN), has sufficiently presented to court, that its has an action against the oil company.



And that the order which was sought and granted, was to preserve res from been disposed off before the hearing and determination of the suit’s motion on notice.

Justice Aikawa had on November 23, 2020, made an order of mareva injunction against the oil company over alleged $85.5m debt, following an application filed and moved by the Access Bank Plc’s lawyer, Ogunba (SAN).

FRAUD! ENETSUD DRAGS TIC ILORIN TO ICPC OVER N27 MILLION PROJECTS

The Elites Network for Sustainable Development ENetSuD has dragged the Technology Incubation Center Ilorin (TIC) to the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) over mismanagement of over 27 million naira for Federal Government capital projects in Kwara State. The TIC is the state office of the National Board for Technology Incubation (NBTI) based in Abuja.

According to a statement received by TheConscience on Friday, signed by Usman Radhiyyat Taiye (Mrs), Deputy Coordinator (Administration), Elites Network for Sustainable Development (ENetSuD), the organization in a detailed petition signed by its Coordinator, Dr. Alagbonsi Abdullateef, told ICPC that “As part of our routine tracking of Federal Government (FG) budget execution under our #FollowKwaraMoney activities, we wrote a Freedom of Information (FOI) letter to the TIC to provide us with the financial and technical details of how the funds released by FG to the center for the execution of 2015 – 2018 projects have been spent.

Responding via letters TIC/ILO/NBTI/ADM/S.022/VOL.1 and TIC/ILO/NBTI/ADM/S.044/VOL.1 dated 19th September and 18th October, 2019 respectively, the TIC provided us with the relevant documents for 2016 – 2018, while those of 2015 were not provided due to some reasons explained”.

“Consequently, our preliminary report after our investigation revealed that most of the fund released to TIC were mismanaged, in addition to the fact that many contractual terms were not complied with.

Investigations has uncovered how Dangote Group under the leadership of its president, Alhaji Aliko Dangote has been engaging in subversive activities tantamount to economic sabotage, around Nigeria land borders.

In August 2019, President Muhammadu Buhari’s government announced a border closure policy which saw the immediate halting of all trade activities across Nigerian borders with neighbouring countries like Benin and Niger State.

The border closure policy was triggered by Nigerian authorities’ frustration with the smuggling in of rice and illicit exports of locally subsidized petrol to neighboring countries Benin Republic and others.

Although it may seem like the blockade encouraged the consumption of locally grown produce such as rice, it also hurt factories in some countries across West Africa, which rely on Nigeria’s market of 200 million people.

Investigations revealed that while the borders remained shut, Dangote trucks resumed export of cement across neighbouring West African Countries and upon returning back into the country, men of the Nigerian Customs Service suspected to be under the company’s payroll look the other way while the trucks smuggle foreign rice and other contraband goods into the country particularly through the Seme border.

Olabode Somefun, a land border clearing agent who spoke to our reporter recounts how his business has been in decline since the border was shut, stating that he is even more frustrated seeing the shenanigans orchestrated by Dangote Cement truck drivers on daily basis across the border.

Mr. Babatunde Fowler, had returned to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for the second round of interrogation following his appearance on Monday and quizzing by the EFCC in Lagos for over seven hours after which he was allowed to go home late at night on the condition that he returns Tuesday.


“He was invited by the Commission and responded today,” EFCC spokesman, Mr Wilson Uwujaren, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday via SMS.

When asked for details of the investigation, he told NAN they were not yet available.

Reports said the former FIRS boss was undergoing interrogation at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja over alleged fraud while in office.

Fowler, it was learnt, is answering questions over a revenue shortfall at the FIRS as well as his alleged links to Alpha Beta Consulting, a Lagos-based company that helps the state government to reconcile taxes for a commission of 10 per cent.

Party officials in the United States have explained how hackers stole $2.3m from President Donald Trump reelection campaign fund, in a move that appears to impair and frustrate Trump reelection campaign efforts.

Republican officials in Wisconsin said hackers stole $2.3m from an account being used to help re-elect President Donald Trump of United States.


Independent reports say state party chairman Andrew Hitt said the suspicious activity was noticed on 22 October and that the FBI is now investigating.

Wisconsin is a key swing state in the 2020 election, having been won by Mr Trump in 2016 by just 23,000 votes.

SANWO-OLU APPROVES LAGOS SCHOOL REOPENING

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has approved Lagos school reopening for all classes in public and private schools.

Sanwo-Olu said Lagos school reopening across the State should begin from Monday, 2nd of November, 2020 while boarders in public schools are to resume on Sunday, 1st of the same month.

Disclosing this today, Honourable Commissioner for Education, Mrs Folasade Adefisayo said that this has been an unprecedented year with the recent happenings that have regrettably led to frequent closure of lagos schools with attendant learning disruptions faced by all children.

HOW DISCOS IGNORE NERC, SLAMS CUSTOMERS WITH ‘CRAZY’ ELECTRICITY BILL

The recent electricity bill distributed to estimated customers across the country is not only wicked, but criminal.


This was done in flagrant disregard for the capping which the National Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) issued out in February this year.

In view of the aforesaid, the August and September billings are contrary to the NERC Order “C” of Page 7 of the ORDER NO/NERC 197/2020 titled Order on the Capping of Estimated Electricity Bill in the NESI.

The NERC had in February issued order No/NERC/197/2020 on capping of estimated billings in the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry, thereby placing a cap on estimated bill to unmetered customers.

This was to protect unmetered R2 (Residential single and 3 phase meters, who consume more than 50kwh per month) and C1 (Commercial single and 3 phase meters, small businesses) customers from estimated and arbitrary billing and hopefully hasten the process of metering. (June 9, 2020) NERC Tweet

The National Youth Service Corps NYSC camp Abuja, was invaded today by looters who carted away mattresses and other valuables while a man was also shot.

TheConscience reports that this follows a nationwide wave of invasion and lootings where hoodlums and thugs invade public and private property seeking to loot cash, food items, electronic gadgets and other valuables.


Armed hoodlums on Tuesday morning broke into the Orientation Camp of the National Youth Corps in Kubwa, Abuja, Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory.

Brandishing knives and other dangerous objects, the thugs blocked the road and ordered motorists to turn back.

LAGOS GOVERNOR BLASTS GANI ADAMS: “GET YOUR FACTS RIGHT”

Lagos Governor, Babajide Sanwo Olu, has faulted Gani Adams over statement credited to him on Amotekun bill.

Recall that Adams had in an interview at the weekend claimed that while the other five states in the South-West had signed the Amotekun bill into law, only Lagos state has refused to do so for inexplicable reasons.

“The process of Amotekun started in July 2019 and the South-West governors agreed to establish Amotekun. Five governors in the South-West have signed the bill of Amotekun into law but Lagos State has not signed its bill into law” Adams had claimed.

But in a swift reaction, the lagos governor debunked the claim, charging the Aare Ona Kakanfo, Gani Adams, to get his facts right.

In a chat with Independent, Gbenga Omotosho, the Commissioner for Information said the state government passed the bill into Law in March this year.

TINUBU REVEALS THOSE WHO ATTACKED HIS COMPANIES

Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, former Lagos state governor has said his political opponents masterminded the attacks on his companies during the endsars protests in the state.

Recall that hoodlums had destroyed the Nation Newspaper building and TVC broadcast equipment, cars and other property also destroyed on Wednesday following the Lekki shootings on Tuesday October 20.

In a statement tagged the #endsars protests; a fundamental lesson in democratic governance, Tinubu said his political opponents were behind the arson and looting at the companies.

Confirming his ownership of the attacked assets, Tinubu said, “I am, indeed, a promoter and financial investor in the Nation newspaper and TVC.

“It was widely known and circulated through social media that certain malevolent elements were going to take advantage of the situation to attack the Nation newspaper facilities and TVC in Lagos.

“The attackers came. Both facilities were significantly damaged. Although equipped with prior notice of the imminent trespass, I did not call any one to seek or request for the army or police to deploy let alone attack, kill, or injure those who razed and vandalized these properties.

“I did not want any bloodshed. These elements, mostly hirelings of my political opponents, wreaked their havoc and destroyed those buildings and facilities and I thank God that the employees of these two media institutions managed to escape largely unharmed.

“There is a deeper truth involved here. Burned buildings and damaged equipment can be rebuilt or replaced. There is no adequate substitute for the loss of even a single human life. I am not one to encourage violence. I abhor it. Thus I did nothing that might endanger lives, even the lives of those who destroyed my properties.”
