Thanks for your contribution however I'm not really soliciting help although I'm open to anyone who wants to help. The reason I opened the thread was 1 to share my story ( real-time) of how I bought my FIRST car which I have already conceived in my mind though It hasn't come physically ( faith). 2. I believe they are lots of people who started like I'm starting ( a desire, savings and favour) and I would like their stories to inspire me and many others to pursue their goals. 3. I believe theirs a lot we can learn to avoid making certain mistakes others made. Which truly speaking I have learnt a lot From contributors to this thread. ( Thanks for your stories people greggng: The heading of your post is misleading ..there is no other way of buying car ...than approaching a reputable car dealer to pick your choice with your money . It would 've been better if your post is all about soliciting for help to make up your fund to enable you buy a car .... |

Wow you Sha went through alot Thank God you finally got a good deal Thanks for the tips to tmeeto: Hmmmmmm......buying my first car.
After working for about 18months, I was tired of waiting at the bus stop for my colleagues in the morning and at the close of work, just waiting because the person that will drop you off wasn’t ready to leave.
The car I really wanted to buy was a 2008 Camry Sport (Toks) which was going for about 1.8m then. All the money I had in my life was about 2m, I was like how will I use all my life savings to buy a car.
I knew I couldn’t buy any brand other than a Toyota. The next car within my budget was the 2004-2006 corolla, however, I disliked the car because it was so common. At this junction, I started considering naija used Kia Rio,cerato,Toyota Yaris because they were within my budget.
The hunt for naija used car begun. I’ll check Nairaland and Jiji day and night. Because of work I had only weekends to go and inspect cars only if the car was on the island and environs- I could sneak out from work to check it out.
Remember going far and wide to see some cars and would just be disappointed that what is this? Some other cars when I make appointment with the seller during the week to come for inspection on Saturday- the car would have been should by the appointment date.
I almost bought a used 2010 Kia Cerato for about 1.4m. The car was clean, owner was relocation abroad. (That reminds me lost of the sellers of the naija used cars would claim that the owner is abroad or relocation abroad and the car was hardly driven). Because of the poor resell value I let the Kia Rio pass. The seller was very disappointed with me.
Moving on next was a green 06 corolla I went to check out in Lekki phase 1. I knew a lot about cars and I don’t need more than 5mins to know a good car. This car was solid. The legs, engine, interior and exterior were on point. It was even tinted again with a tint permit. We negotiated price and everything. Told the seller I’ll be back the next day. When I got to the office, I don’t even know what happened I started thinking too much as this was my first time spending that kind of money about 1.2m. I was skeptical. I sha summoned courage to pay in like 2 days time. I called the seller he said the car has been sold. I almost died. I was like where will I see another clean car like this. My car search had taken me to all ends of Lagos. I was tired.
I sha went back to jiji and saw another corolla or a Yaris couldn’t remember. This one was close to my house sha. I proceeded there over the weekend. The car I initially came to see was not available. So he should be another. The car was clean, he said it was an official in Lagos state that owned the car and she bought it off the state government and wants to resell. I drove this car for 5 mins and knew that this was it.
I made up my mind to just pay for the corolla and it was cheap about 850k. The scary thing was the seller said he wanted cash. I was like cash ke. As I had decided that nothing will stop me from getting that car. We went to the bank in Unilag ( this was a safe environment and I was sure nobody will come and jack us) I withdraw the 800k cash and handed it over. Then took my car home.
My advice: -Buy a car within your range and ensure you have extra money Incase. -inspect the car very well, you can’t know all the issue but cover the basics. - car sellers will say all sorts and but you under pressure. However, you will know a good deal when you see one. - most importantly, deal with the direct owner of the car. You will get the best bargain. - Toyotas have very good resell value- imagine selling a used car 200k more than you bought it years ago. |

baba4thegehs: I'm about to buy my first car today, I'm really hoping this will be a good decision. So I saw an Honda DC on jiji some days ago, called a mechanic to come help me inspect the car yesterday. Unfortunately we we're unable to meet with the actual end user, who apparently gave the car to someone in his estate to close the deal for him.
Car body looks decent as it was the first body, my mechanic who's an honda specialist got inside the car checks the AC engine sound, etc all good. Afterwards we took the car for test drive, AC was chilled as f, selection was accurate, breaks and shocks good too, no funny sounds. The tires were changed some months ago, the actual owner of the car really did maintained the car.
My mechanic was impressed he literally said I should not let the car go by, the fixes to be done on the car were kinda minor just scratch on the front bumper and headlights, then a small hire line crack on the windscreen which I can ignore till I can get a replacement. So we went back and renegotiate the price, but unfortunately their last price was above the budget.
We left and later in the day I called my contact to confirm the mileage on the car as I noticed we didn't check for that during the inspection, and he said he would confirm and get back to me, after sometime he sent a whatsapp image and guess what, this car has a mileage of 419,083 miles.
I was kinda surprised that a car with such mileage still looks so good engine, body, interior and legs etc, and my mechanic was like that also skipped his mind while we were inspecting but assured me interms of performance that the car is a beast but mileage only means the owner used the car but also maintained it along side.
So I told my contact I'll get back to him this morning, so guys my ask is, does the mileage really mean that much when buying a used car, can I proceed with this deal?. But I also suspect that he might have bought the car with a high mileage.
So yeah... that's my story. Will update y'all later today with some more pics and my final decision. The car looks clean and sharp. Congrats in advance. It will do you good if you post the price so car expert on the thread can tell you if it's a good deal. |

Musty4ahmed1: Bought my first car Honda Baby boy last year, after a failed attempt to get the one I saw on Jiji, the owner is a Med Doc, very clean Baby boy at a cheaper price, but my money wasn't complete for the amount he agreed to sell, I begged him that am a salary earner that he should be patient with me at the end of the month so as to complete I the price he agreed, infact I became very familiar with him, I call him almost on a daily basis, he assured me he was not going to sell it since am a young guy hustling, but when the month ends, I called this guy Alas! I was shocked when he said he has changed his mind not to sell the car again, I was so disappointed, I knew he sold the car to someone else may be at a better deal or he needed urgent cash. I knew any attempt to keep the money with me, I will eventually touch it. I just strolled to different car stands looking for baby boy, non was available since it's old car, a dealer called the owner of one baby boy that the guy said he will like to change his car when he has money, the dealer convinced him to sell to me and keep the money so that he can hustle to get another car from him which he yielded. That was how I bought my Honda baby boy, I never regret buying the car though not as clean as the one on Jiji, but I am enjoying the car, no any issue with the car since I bought the car apart from normal change of oil. I am loving that accord, I don't know why some people are condemning Accord, the car can fly and very balanced. thanks for sharing |

EmmanuelBanks: chai how I wish me sef fit join put mouth talk how I buy my first car
mehn this life .sha...
lost my parents since I was 5yrs...live with my uncle, his wife showed my shege. treated me worse than a slave..I said that because atleast a slave or prisoner knows when to eat, and my uncle works at abuja, so not always ard..
funny things is I kept everything to myself, though my so called uncle knew what was goin too
omo to cut long story short, these ppl are rich, have about fours cars in the compound, even up till I was 18, 19 yrs old the wife never allow me to enter any of the car, not to talk of learning how to drive them...I only washed them, which after sometimes because of guilt, she told me not to even wash the cars anymore...
chai omo I don really suffer, that's y i envy those kids that live with and still have their parents intact...suffering as a kid is not something I will ever wished for my enemies, though am 26 now, still managing..
done with UNIVERSITY but still hoping my uncle could help with something...pls for those that still have any of their parents, cherish them, hug them more often, play with them...these are something I dream of all my life.
I never enjoyed any fatherly or motherly love...chai with what I have gone through, I will make sure I do anything for my kids if I eventually have, cause they must not suffer ooo..
I rather not have kids, than to have but no money to cater for them Very touching story. People way get parents and taken them for granted make una come hear o. Bro God that saw you through school will never leave you nor slumber. Keep focusing one day you will buy plane for your family haters |
