As for the incident you talked about that delayed his rise in the army, I knew about it already as Bamaiyi had already made it public in his book where he actually stated it was a proper court martial Abdusalami faced for stealing earlier in his career.

Anyway, since you reminded me about Bamaiyi's book, it is important to note that when the meeting to choose the Head of State started properly, Bamaiyi states he was the one that stood up and nominated Abdulsalami, so that should put to rest the question of seniority regarding Bamaiyi and Abdulsalami despite the difference in ranks.

The seniority of your office has always mattered in the Army. Also Abdulsalami was never a Lt General and was promoted from Major General to General when he became C in C, which again shows you did not read people's comments before you dropped yours.

I didn't say you never agreed to the fact that Oseni seniored Abdulsalaam by rank and I read your post well before responding, I only corroborated what you said, that though the former joined military earlier, the latter seniored him by military ranking and I told you what you didn't know...why his promotion was stagnated due to his odoogbo barracks' unruly behaviour. The retired military officer in the family was Abdulsalaam Abubakar's colleague in that barracks back then, in charge of transportation.

That said, if you read my so-called epistle from the first post, you'd have seen where I talked about Abdulsalaam ranking on becoming head of state,meaning the Lt General position was skipped and he became full general( to fit into that office of head of state). I never said he was ever commissioned a Lt General as you posted in response. The Abubakar story is not 100% correct when you talk about seniority.

Firstly he only skipped one rank, Lt General, however he was senior to Bamaiyi in 2 important ways.

Firstly he was CDS, and there is little doubt that is actually the most senior military office, and to be fair Nigeria has kept to that tradition since it was instituted.

Also he actually joined the military many years before Bamaiyi as an Airforce cadet and an Army officer later. Most military people tend to respect when you joined over even rank (secretly) as they know that was devoid of politics.

Also, if we're talking about the most senior officer at Abacha's death, Useni seniored all of them, including Abacha by when he first joined the military . He also seniored the rest by becoming a Lt General before all of them.

So anyway, the right call was made by the military during Abdulsalami's time , and obviously this later proved true for most Nigerians who wanted democracy ( at the rate they were enjoying, there was very little hope that Jerry boy or Bamaiyi would have handed over power to civilians).

The immediate senior to him was Lieutenant General Jeremiah Useni. Useni was commissioned the LT Gen ahead of Gen Abdulsalaami Abubakar, even though Gen Abubakar joined the army before him. Gen Abubakar ought to have even gone farther than that much earlier but due to the unsubstantiated unruly behaviour when serving at the Odogbo military barracks at Ojoo in ibadan, his promotion was delayed.

This isn't a debatable fact. We get one oga for military for my family and I had to call thim to confirm this before posting it. He served actively in anacha's administration so he was in the know of everything.Gen Oladipo Diya was the most senior but because they needed a regime change, being the second-in-command to Abacha(though ceremoniously) Gen. Adeosun case is the best example as he was promoted deep into Buratai's term as a Lt Gen and even outlasted Buratai who retired in Jan 2021, while a junior was made COAS and he (Adesosun) retired only in November 2021.

Buhari was the head of state when all of this happened so we cannot claim to understand Army tradition more than him.

the promotion into the ranks in the military always comes with bias, especially in Nigeria. I remember this incident very well. I also remember when Gen Abdulsalaam Abubakar was elevated into full general, skipping 2 ranks and his seniors to become head of state after abacha was murdered.

In a situation where a top military officer leading a nation dies or becomes incapacitated, his second-in-command takes over but in the case of abubakar,due process wasn't followed
