When the World Economic Forum’s Africa summit opens in Cape Town on Wednesday, the center of attention will not be Jacob Zuma, president of the host nation, or any of the politicians, philanthropists, or business leaders among the 1,250 delegates—from 75 countries—attending the continent’s biggest business and economics gathering of the great and the good. The man on everyone’s mind will not even be there: Muhammadu Buhari, the newly sworn-in president of Nigeria. Sure, there will be much discussion on the continent’s challenges and opportunities. There will also be much deal-making on the sidelines: business leaders say the regional WEF gatherings are more conducive to clinching deals than the annual conclave in Davos, which is better suited to higher-altitude deliberations on global issues. But it’s a fair bet that the majority of those gathered in the Cape Town International Convention Center will have their eyes turned toward Aso Rock, the presidential palace in Abuja. As Africa’s biggest country—and, as of last year, its largest economy—Nigeria’s fate has an enormous bearing on practically everyone at the WEF event. The question they will be asking is, can Buhari solve Nigeria’s many chronic problems? The former military dictator has barely returned to power—this time, with a popular mandate—but neither his country nor his continent can afford to give him much time to settle in. His swearing-in last week was attended by a palpable sense of expectation, mixed in with a driving urgency, across Africa. As an economic forum, it is inevitable that much of the conversation among the WEF delegates will be about Nigeria’s economic woes—demonstrated just last week by a fuel crisis that nearly overshadowed Buhari’s investiture—and its huge opportunities. (One early test for Buhari: paying salaries to government employees.) The departure of the his do-nothing predecessor, Goodluck Johnathan, has automatically given rise to a sense of optimism about Nigeria’s economy. Cape Town will be an opportunity to parse Buhari’s policy pronouncements and his appointments to key government positions. But no discussion about Nigeria can long evade the topic of Boko Haram, the terrorist group that has bedeviled the country—and its neighbors—for much of the past year. Here too, Buhari has aroused optimism by reorganizing the command structure of his security forces, and pledging to step up the campaign against the terrorists. (Boko Haram has welcomed the new president with fresh violence in Maiduguri.)

HOPE THIS MAKES FRONT PAGE Maiduguri (Nigeria) (AFP) - Nigeria's military on Saturday repelled a Boko Haram attack on the key northeast city of Maiduguri that saw rocket-propelled grenades fired into homes, witnesses and security sources said. he Islamists' assault on the Borno state capital came a day after President Muhammadu Buhari's inauguration, with the new leader vowing to re-enforce Maiduguri with a new command and control centre to better coordinate the counter-insurgency effort. Shortly after midnight (2300 GMT Friday), residents in the Dala suburb south of the city woke to the sound of RPGs being fired in succession, said resident Modu Karumi, in an account supported by several others. Witnesses said hundreds of Islamist gunmen were trying to advance on the city, which is now home to hundreds of thousands of people displaced by unrest in other parts of Borno state. An AFP reporter who lives in the area said he heard what sounded like armoured personnel carriers deploying to the southern edge of Maiduguri to face the rebel advance. Dala resident Alhaji Bukar said he saw at least one RPG fall into a private home, but details on casualties were not immediately clear. Locals reported other residential homes being hit. Three senior security sources in Maiduguri who were not authorised to speak publicly said the attack had been repelled. "All is under control. There is no cause for alarm," one of those sources told AFP. The sound of RPGs and gunfire has also eased, residents and an AFP reporter said. Experts doubt that Boko Haram currently has the capacity to seize Maiduguri, but a major attack inside the city would likely be disastrous for civilians. The Islamist rebels have been flushed out of several Borno state towns they controlled in an offensive launched in February by Nigeria with backing from neighbouring Cameroon, Chad and Niger. But there are signs of the militants regrouping, particularly in the remote parts of eastern Borno near the Cameroon border. Buhari in his inaugural address on Friday vowed to intensify the fight against Boko Haram, notably by shifting operational command from the capital Abuja to Maiduguri. His predecessor Goodluck Jonathan's performance against the militants was heavily criticised, with the conflict killing more than 15,000 people since 2009 and forcing another 1.5 million from their homes. Buhari, a former army general, insists the uprising can be defeated and has placed the Boko Haram effort at the top of his administration's agenda. |

Why are their acting like they know nothing of what is happening. OK i will help the senators that clam to represent the masses 1. The fuel scarcity is caused by the refusal of the minister of finance to dance to the beats of the cabal. The cabal are asking for 200Billion Naira before May 29th without proper proof of importing fuel. 2. NPDC staff are self-centered that Nupeng and pengassan asked OML 34, 26 and 30 to shut down oil production facility due to handling over of OML 42 to neconde and OML 40 to Eland oil and gas. 3. Fuel tranker drivers embark on an indefinite strike in solidarity with NPDC ongoing strike. 4. Goodluck jonathan has refuse to settle the cabal that holds our dear country to ransom whenever its demand it not met. The incoming government needs to destroy the cabal and i hope buhari can make it becomes tinubu/oando is a member of the cabal. Goodluck to our dear buhari. Long live Nigeria and short live Minster of Petrol-dollar and the cabals. |
How does buhari plan to kill corruption when his wife is already living the life of the rich and famous. Stop mingling with the corrupt tinubu's |
NPDC WORKERS SHUT DOWN 8 OIL FILED THAT IT'S BEEN OPERATED AND MAINTENANCE BY NPDC. THIS INSTRUCTION COMES AS TUC, NUPENG AND PENGASSAN GAVE THE INSTRUCTION TODAY. THE REASON IS THAT THE JOINT OWNERS OF THIS OML WANT TO OPERATE BECAUSE NPDC IS NOT UP TO THE TASK. WHY THE RUSH IN THE TRANSFER OF OPERATOR-SHIP BY THE MINISTER AND THE PRESIDENT? NIGERIA WILL LOOSE OVER 200K BARRELS OF CRUDE OIL DAILY. CABAL HOLDS THE NATION TO RANSOM AGAIN. |
Militants are freedom fighters that fight for a cause unlike boko ha-rams. Freedom fighters are legitimate people so are entitle to any thing all Nigerians get. The pipe line is in our region (Niger-delta) so we need to protect our assets and environment. Buhari will cancel the contract and give it to the northerns to protect our assets. That will be a bad move. Jonathan did so much for the north than his own home. So we expect buhari to emulate Jonathan and do more. |
What will happen to other OML - 42,30, 26 etc |
One man's meat is another man's poison. |
Sexy mama u 2 much |
Is it true that NPDC workers are on strike because of the handling over of OML 42 to Neconde Energy. How can corrupt children go on strike when the mama of petrol-dollar (Mama Alison) is cooling off in Austria. |
Is it true that NPDC workers are on strike because of the handling over of OML 42 to Neconde Energy. How can corrupt children go on strike when the mama of petrol-dollar (Mama Alison) is cooling off in Austria. |
POINT OF CORRECTION. NPDC Staff do not do anywork in the listed OML's. 3rd party does all the work. So lets allow those that invested so much manage their investment. |
Dear All, 45% of OML 42 was sold to Neconde Enegy ltd by Shell, Agip and others sometime in 2011/2012, 55% belongs to corrupt FG/NNPC, but the operations and maintenance (o&M) belongs to NPDC. NPDC gave the O&M to a 3rd comany company called Century energy which belongs to Allison (Minister of petrol.-dollar and Oilpayroll) husband. What happened is that NPDC can not meet the tasks and target so the owners (Neconde) requested to handle al the affairs of OML 42 themselves because the loan interest is going higher, like other owners Seplat etc. NPDC lazy staff should shut up because all the fat pocket allowances will not be coming in again. Lets move a motion to remove all the OML from NPDC and return them to the owners. If you are in doubt "google"" seplat and see how profitable the company, and how the host communities are benefiting from the company. |
NPDC NA WA. WHY SELL IT NOW. WHEN ALL THE WORK WERE BEEN DONE BY CONTRACT STAFF. WHY IS NPDC CRYING NOW, WHEN CONTRACT WORKER IN BATAN WERE CRYING FOR POOR WELFARE WHO HEARD THEM. PLEASE SAVE OTHER OML'S. |
RIP |
