It has emerged that a meeting of aggrieved members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) was held on Wednesday where the participants weighed several aptions, with majority backing the idea of a mass defection from the ruling party.

The meeting was attended by the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, Governor of Sokoto State, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, Senator Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso, among other chieftains of the APC.

A statement yesterday by the chairman of the nPDP, Alhaji Kawu Baraje, said the meeting was called to intimate members on the outcome of an earlier meeting with the leadership of the APC.

Baraje and other members of the nPDP on Monday met with APC stakeholders over allegation of marginalization against in the ruling party.

The group, in April, demanded to meet with officials of the ruling party to discuss their grievances and expectations from the APC and the Muhammadu Buhari-led government.

“Following this development, the party invited us and we honoured their invitation for a meeting. We met with the leadership of the party last week, during which we resolved to report the outcome of our meeting to our members and stakeholders before arriving at any decision or proceeding with the next phase of discussions or actions with the APC and government,” Baraje said in the statement.

But on the list of the nPDP members at the Wednesday meeting provided by Baraje were names of political office holders that were never part of the nPDP or its parent party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), checks by Daily Trust on Sunday showed.

One of those in attendance at the meeting said last night that the meeting was not restricted to the members of the nPDP block in the APC alone as other ‘like-minds’ also attended.

As part of the outcome, it was learnt, there is the likelihood that the affected members would leave the party in en masse, Daily Trust on Sunday has learnt.

The source, who is a lawmaker, said they discussed issues relating to how some of them were treated during the last congresses of the party and the way forward.

The lawmaker, who was never part of the nPDP, said they may leave the party if no concrete action was taken to address their grievances.

The meeting was well attended, with some governors who could not make it sending their apologies, the source said.

“I was at the meeting as a like-mind, not as a member of the nPDP because I was never part of them. We felt that so many things are going wrong in the party. Most members of the nPDP are not well treated.

“Look at what they are doing to Dino Melaye, who is an APC senator. Even during the PDP era, nobody did such a thing to anybody. The police would drag a senator who suffered for the party on the ground and no action was taken.

“Again, if you look at the congresses held, many nPDP members were sidelined, so they need justice. But the ultimate decision taken is to give the party some time to see if they would address the issues. If they don’t, then we’ll have no option than to leave,” the source said.

Asked which party they would join in the event that their grievances are not addressed, the source said no decision was taken on that.“We all worked for the APC and we should be treated equally; that’s what we are saying,” the lawmaker added.

Another lawmaker, who is a member of the nPDP, confirmed that the meeting was for like-minds as other members also attended.

Another source, who was at the meeting, said the tone was set by the Senate president who opened the floor by speaking about the plight of the members of the nPDP in the APC.

The source said: “After Saraki spoke, he asked us what would be our next step. We told him that we thought the meeting was convened for us to pull out of the APC.”

The senator said, at the end of the meeting, they resolved to pick one of two options.

“One of the two options supported by the majority was the immediate pulling out of the APC. Almost everybody who attended the meeting supported this option.

“But the issue now is that we must forestall the repeat of what happened to us when we joined the APC. Most of the speakers said we must have concrete agreements between us and the party that we will cross to,” he said.

The second option was for them to remain in the APC and continue to consult and strategise, adding, however, that it did not go down well with majority of the aggrieved members in attendance.

“This last option was not supported by many of us. The first option was the one that majority of us supported. The meeting was well attended by almost all members of the nPDP from across the country,” he said.

Asked to name those who attended the meeting, the source who spoke after seeing the statement issued by Baraje said: “All the names listed in the statement were in attendance, but Tambuwal was just a listener at the meeting. He didn’t say anything.”

Daily Trust on Sunday gathered that the meeting set up three committees to advise it on the next line of action to take.

“The first committee has been tasked to articulate the grievances of those who attended the meeting, including nPDP members and many others that joined much later but could not be fully accommodated, a source said, adding, “The committee has been directed to look at the relationship with the APC and the presidency; how they were shoved aside by the current leadership and the failure of President Muhammadu Buhari to fully resolve the problem,” the source said.

“The second committee was tasked to look at the state of the nation, including the economy and others. They were also asked to aggregate the political strength of aggrieved members in their states; the mass of people they could go along with in the event they would leave the party.

“The third committee is expected to shop for a strong political party they could join as a group so that they could negotiate from the position of strength,” he said.

Another source said the aggrieved members were already in talks with the PDP and ADC.

“Many of those that attended Wednesday’s meeting strongly feel that PDP is the party to join because Nigerians know it very well and it has structures all over.

“But the condition for joining the PDP is that the name should be changed. They want the letter ‘A’ to precede PDP so that the party would now be called ‘APDP’, and this is for two reasons. The first is to enable the party appear on top of the ballot paper so that Nigerians would find it easier to trace it. The PDP is down in the ballot; and remember that we have about 68 political parties now.

“The second reason is that in the event the ADC agrees to merge with the PDP, its first letter ‘A’ which stands for Africa that would be adopted,” he said.

“Even though the aggrieved legislators said in their communiqué that they would not leave the APC, that is not the actual case,” a source close to one of the aggrieved senators, said.

“Yes they would remain if their grievances are met, which is very unlikely because in most instances, it means that Buhari would tame governors in favour of legislators and others. The conceivable option is to leave the party. I can assure you that at present, at least 20 senators and no fewer than 100 members of the House of Representatives are set to go.

“And there would be a band wagon effect, meaning that more legislators would leave in the coming months ahead of party primaries in order to actualise their dreams.

“As things stand, with the exception of very few, many senators and reps have lost out the battle to their governors in their states after the congresses, and there are others, especially ex-governors who might likely leave despite the fact that they are in control of the APC in their states. They have security a report that the EFCC will not spare them immediately after the election,” he said.

The meeting was well attended by members of the nPDP, including serving and former governors, senators, members of the House of Representatives and other aggrieved APC stakeholders, Baraje said in the statement.

“Those that attended the meeting include Sen. Saraki, President of the Senate; Yakubu Dogara, Speaker, House of Representatives; Tambuwal, governor of Sokoto State; Sen. Rabiu Kwankwaso; Prince Oyinlola, Admiral Murtala Nyako (rtd); Sen. Adamu Aliero; Sen. Danjuma Goje; Sen. John Enoh; Sen. Andy Uba; Sen. Ibrahim Gobir; Sen. Rufai Ibrahim; Sen. Ibrahim Danbaba; Sen. A source close to Dogara confirmed that the Speaker attended the meeting.

Dogara has been having a running battle with the Bauchi State Governor Mohammed Abubakar.

Dogara did not attend any of the APC congresses held in the state.

Prior to the state congress held last week, he and other notable personalities such as Senator Isa Hamma Misau and Nazif Gamawa approached a court to stop the congress.

Contacted, the special adviser to Saraki on media and publicity, Yusuph Olaniyonu, said he was not aware of any meeting between his principal and other members of the APC.

“I do not know anything about the meeting. You said a statement had been issued, why can’t you stick to it?” Olaniyonu said in a phone interview.

The United States on Tuesday accused the Muhammadu Buhari led government of of Nigeria of human rights abuses and violation of rule of law, noting specifically that there was no record that the Nigerian or military authorities had demanded accountability from the soldiers implicated in the December 2015 clash between the Army and members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria led by Ibrahim El-Zakzaky.

The US stated this in the International Religious Freedom Report for 2017 released by the Department of State’s Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labour.

The report also noted that the Nigerian government continued to hold El-Zakzaky and restrict the free movement and association of his followers.

It read, “Human rights groups continued to report the Federal Government often failed to prevent, quell, or respond to violence affecting religious groups, particularly in the North Eastern and central regions of the country.

“In November, Kano State police fired tear gas and bullets, killing three members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria during its annual Ashura procession.

In another part of the report, it stated;

“During 2016, the Nigerian government at the federal and state levels continued to repress the IMN. The confrontation started in December 2015 in Zaria, Kaduna State, when the Nigerian Army killed 347 IMN members, arrested almost 200 others, including IMN leader Sheikh Ibrahim Zakzaky, and destroyed the IMN’s spiritual headquarters after the group blocked the procession of the Nigerian Army’s chief of staff. Since this incident, the Nigerian government has detained Zakzaky without charge. A federal court ruled on December 2, 2016, that Zakzaky should be released within 45 days.”

The US also raised concerns that soldiers implicated in the December 2015 clash between the army and IMN members had not been brought to book.

“There were no reports of accountability for soldiers implicated in the December 2015 clash between the army and IMN members that, according to a Kaduna State Government report and reports from non-government observers, left at least 348 IMN members and one soldier dead, with IMN members buried in a mass grave.”

It, however, alleged that dozens of IMN members were still being held since December 2015, charged with the death of the soldier.

It recalled that in August, the then Acting President Yemi Osinbajo announced the creation of a Presidential Investigative Panel that was committed to transparently and credibly investigating human rights abuses committed by the military.

It said the IMN, however, publicly stated that it would boycott the panel because it doubted its sincerity.

External human rights observers, it noted, also expressed concern over the lack of transparency and rigour of the panel.

The report noted that the Nigerian government had yet to obey court orders on the detained El-Zakzaky and his wife.

“The government stated publicly that Sheikh El-Zakzaky, leader of the IMN and a prominent Shia cleric, would remain in what it said was ‘protective custody’ pending the appeal of the December 2016 decision of the Federal High Court in Abuja that the government must release him.

“At year’s end, El-Zakzaky remained in prison.

“The court also ruled that the government must provide him with a house and pay him and his wife restitution of N25m ($69,600) by January 15; at year’s end, the court’s order had yet to be followed,” it said.

The report also indicated that terrorist organisation, Boko Haram, and its splinter organisation, the Islamic State-West Africa, continued “carrying out numerous attacks, committing mass killings, and targeting civilians.”

It quoted Nigeria Watch as estimating that activities by Boko Haram and ISIS-WA resulted in the deaths of 1,794 persons in 2017, including members of the two groups.

The Nigerian Government is yet to react to the report at the time of filing this report.

Love him, hate him, the fact remains; one cannot easily ignore Ayodele Peter Fayose, the Governor of Ekiti state. At once verbose and with a sense of self-adulation, Fayose like the mythical bird, phoenix, seems to reinvent himself and stay in the imagination of the people despite not being governor of one of the most prominent states.

History has it that the one who is referred to as the Oshokomole 1 of Yorubaland is the only Nigerian that have had the enviable record of defeating two incumbents at different times. Fayose first did it against the debonair Niyi Adebayo in 2003, and again in 2014 over fluent-speaking Kayode Fayemi in controversial circumstances in 2014.

One intriguing aspect of the Fayose story is that despite having suffered an impeachment on October 16, 2006 and fled following attempts by former President Olusegun Obasanjo to give him the Diepreye Alamieyeseigha treatment of having him flown to Abuja in handcuffs, his relevance and connection with the people was never in doubt. Well, the rest, like the say, is history.

As July 14, the date fixed by the Independent National Electoral Commission for the Ekiti governorship poll inches nearer, Fayose, despite not been on the ballot, is evidently dictating the race which brings me to the issue of his politics.

Without a doubt, the governor has ‘commonised’ governance and in the process, feasts on the ignorance and gullibility of the people through the maximum deployment of ‘Stomach Infrastructure.’ Though the governor is not the purveyor of the false charity which politicians use to leave the people doped, he has mastered the art such that it has become his appropriation. It is a common sight to find Fayose in amala joints eating ponmo (cow hide), riding okada, and or playing with kids and sharing sweets and biscuits. When he started his street politics, many sniggered at him and wondered how ‘low can a governor go!’ But the reality of our country’s political space is that the electorate, especially in semi-urban and rural areas, are not inherently sophisticated. They are usually over the moon for the little Greek gifts which most politicians have come to capitalize on.

It is not just a matter of conjecture, but empirical evidence that the common man feels ‘belonged’ when the ‘big man’ stoops to his level and fraternizes with him. To the man on the street who has a chance to sit same place with a governor to eat and even have a handshake, it is a story that has no ending. The tale is told and retold with all the embellishments such that others of his rank who were not so ‘fortunate’ to have shared in the moment begin to dream and wish for their time.

And this is exactly what Fayose as governor of Ekiti state has been leveraging on to gain electoral credibility. This is however not to say that he has no development agenda. After all, only a few days he unveiled a fine piece of architecture of a Government House and a 1.2 kilometre road which drew the most of the governors of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) controlled states as well as former President Goodluck Jonathan.

But more than whatever infrastructure he has put in place, actually, he boasted that over 75 per cent of amenities in the state bear his signature, is his bond with the people.

He has come to master the art of political chicanery, while the opposition flounders and engage in sophisticated talk. Last week, the social media went haywire over statement credited to Minister Fayemi, candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the July governorship election. Fayemi is alleged to have ridiculed Fayose over his dalliance with the common people, the very bulk of voters. “As a governor, you need to be decent, you can never see me mingle with Okada riders like Ore wa (our friend) Fayose ebi Olokada,oko awon Iya loja,” the APC governorship candidate was claimed to have said. It is inconceivable that throughout last week, Fayemi did not bother to give clarity to this obnoxious statement. Or does it mean he said it and finds the commoners of Ekiti state so distasteful? Is it not the same Fayemi and his wife, some mischief makers say, turned to ‘mama put’ at the 2014 elections?

The superior political tactics of Fayose is better taken in the tale of the rat which eats the sole of the sleeper while blowing air on the spot. Take for instance his recent poker move of withdrawing murder charge against the chairman of the Ekiti State chapter of the APC, Chief Jide Awe. While morally it is reprehensible, politically it draws capital which the governor could exploit for his advantage. Before the withdrawal of the case by the state government, Awe was on a three-year exile for the alleged murder of late Mrs. Julianah Adewumi and Mr. Ayo Jeje at Erinjiyan Ekiti, all of Ekiti West Local Government. Both were murdered prior to the 2014 governorship election allegedly by the accused.

It is common sense to know that Awe and the other accused are now in debt to Fayose and whether they decamp or not, they are constrained not to overly work against the interest of the man who has shown them charity.

If the APC is serious of wrestling the state from the Oshokomole in a free, fair and credible process and not just on federal might, then people like Fayemi needs to start demonstrating the underlying commitment that the people are first, develop affinity of shared humanity with the electorate. If Fayose is leveraging on the incentive of coming down from the palatial pedestal of being a governor and identifying with the people, the APC candidate needs to prove that he cannot only engage the people in their rustic environment, but can offer a better deal.

But as things stand, Fayose is dictating the pace and probably has read much of the literature of the Chinese philopsher, Sun Tzu, especially his, The Art of War, to know that “If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

IN x-raying the three years of President Muhammadu Buhari, one has to excuse the myriads of promises he made or that were made on his behalf on the 2015 election train. In that election, Nigeria was turned to an experiment in the hands of American communication experts who designed the then President Goodluck Jonathan and his administration in their own robes.

The experiment paid off with local backups that resonated the failures of that administration and made Buhari look like a heavenly being. It was a shock to many who witnessed the draconian regime of the then General Muhammadu Buhari and his comrade at arms, Brigadier General Tunde Idiagbon of blessed memory.

Even though several social media sites are busy parading the promises and 2015 campaign talks of President Buhari, the President and his party have come to distance themselves from many such promises relied upon by some Nigerians in deciding the 2015 contest. One thing remain though, Buhari and his party cannot deny the Change slogan. They can also not deny the promise to raise the bar in infrastructural status of the country; fight corruption, end insurgency and improve the economy.

So if any commentator decides to judge the administration on the above key promises, the Buharists and Buharideens can only be fair enough to accept failures where they exist.

In 2015, the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Buhari promised change. Change in its true elements is not restrictive. It means the alteration of the existing order considered as bad enough and its replacement with the perceived Eldorado. It indicates a replacement of the condemnable situation with a more acceptable condition.

Looking at the three years of Buhari, what manner of change are we inflicted with? In answering the above, it is easy to come by persons whose horizons are governed by emotion, sentiments and bias. In fact, not a few Nigerians judge issues with such sentiments these days.

However, no one can deny that we all are compelled to respect the sanctity of reality. Nothing deceives the truth. Anyone attempts a deception of reality is either ignorant or swimming in delusion.

Judging by where we were in 2015, can we agree that the Buhari government has brought positive change in the area of political party management, corruption war, the fight against insurgency and management of the economy?

In 2015, APC folks derided the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) of parading deadly characters who had little or no regard for procedures. The APC, shortly after the consolidation of the alliance that yielded the party, absorbed members of the New PDP, who separated from the mainstream party on accusations of impunity and insensitivity to party members. Today, the nPDP members are crying foul in their new

found party. APC chieftains across the land are holding parallel ward, local government and state congresses in the build up to the party’s national convention fixed for June 23 and in the process, many have been sent to their untimely graves. How does this amount to positive change? In fact, it looks pretty much a throwback to pre-1999.

Some commentators have argued that if the APC cannot conduct its intra-party matters without guns and loss of lives, how do we expect a peaceful, free, fair and acceptable election when the contest becomes inter-party?

The anti-corruption war is one promise the Buhari government has not denied. It prides itself as one government that is fighting the battle against graft hard. Much as we have seen that anti-corruption songs are more on the lips of many government officials and officials of the EFCC, the President has still left too many gaps to wonder about.

There are myriads of cases against previous holders of office but knowing the judicial system, no one is sure when the plethora of cases will mature for judgement. We have seen the government and the EFCC exert energy in the bid to “fight” corruption but ask the Western and some Eastern countries which are regarded as having crossed enviable thresholds on the corruption war, very few would be seen to have deployed might or raw power in the fight against corruption.

In Nigeria, where the vice of corruption is already a social miasma, a combination of the law, processes, systems and social engineering strategies are needed to tackle the tragedy. A government will certainly wander in the dark for very long if its strategies are rested on just law enforcement or name and shame. Already, this government is being harassed with questions of selective fight against corruption, condoning of corruption and targeting opposition figures with the aim of achieving political, rather than positive social engineering goals.

As far as commentators continue to see such questions such as the recall of the NHIS Executive Secretary, lack of trial of removed Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, the Abdurasheed Maina saga and the MTN fine issue unanswered, not a few would keep subjecting Buhari’s anti-corruption war to integrity tests.

Change in the nation’s economic fortunes is another promise Buhari cannot deny. He said it at all campaign stops and it was part of this three pillars of his campaign. Has Buhari delivered economy wise? The generality of the population will answer that in the negative. Last week, the Presidency released a statement praising the first quarter GDP figures which showed a 1.9 percent growth. But is the praise not

misplaced when we are coming from a consistent six percent growth for almost 15 years. The same government, due to its own faults, rather than the non-economic reasons being bandied, plunged the economy into recession a while ago. Unemployment has risen from single digits to some 18 percent, peaking at some 300 percent.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has condemned the Federal Government over its incapability to arrest the spate of killing in the country saying that the government has demonstrated an act of irresponsibility towards it constitutional responsibility.

The union maintained that a government that allows her people to be murdered daily is totally irresponsible and has failed to fulfill the social contract of protecting lives and properties.

Conveying this position to the public, the ASUU Chairman of the University of Ibadan, UI, Dr Deji Omole, in an interview with newsmen shortly after the congress of the union in Ibadan demanded adequate security of lives and properties of Nigerians from the government of President Muhammadu Buhari.

The Union also called for the de-politicization of security by heads of security agencies saying loyalty must be to Nigeria and not to Aso Rock residents.

Omole who noted that Nigerians who are already battling with poor economic conditions are now afraid that their lives could be terminated anyhow pointing out that the Muhammadu Buhari led federal government has been issuing ineffective condemnation speeches.

According to Omole, it is a sign of irresponsibility for the government to fold its arms while people are being killed only to approve N10 billion for rebuilding affected communities saying “a serious government would have prevented destruction from happening but the government allowed the carnage to happen”

The ASUU boss noted that while land transportation is hellish for Nigerians, it is now more deadly to travel since criminals have positioned themselves on major roads kidnapping, raping, dispossessing and killing people at will.

Omole said food production is now threatened because communities affected are farming communities while those displayed are farmers who are supposed to be farming during raining season but the herdsmen have allegedly taken over their lands.

He said, “Every day you open newspaper and what you read is news of killing and some people will seat inside Air conditioner offices in Abuja and issue a condemnation speeches which have not done anything in the last three years since they came to power. If Nigerians are already denied quality health facilities, quality education, quality social services, they must not be denied right to life. This is the worst form of treating the governed by a government who promised hope to the masses but which the rich have continued to benefit from. We demand security of lives and properties from the Muhammadu Buhari government. Only the living can demand for other rights. It is sad that one state claimed to have lost about 500 persons to herdsmen terrorism and nobody has been prosecuted for this”.

President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday querried the spending of $16bn on power project during the administration of former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

The president was speaking at the Presidential Villa in Abuja while receiving the Buhari Support Organization led by the Comptroller-General of the Nigerian Customs Service, Ahmed Ali.

Buhari did not mention Obasanjo's name, but asked where was the power after a former president claimed to have spent $16bn on the project.

The House of Representatives had in 2008 described $16 billion spent on power by Obasanjo's government as colossal waste, blaming it on "poor budget planning and a lack of proper oversight by relevant bodies.

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project had also in 2016 urged the acting Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Water Samuel Onnoghen, to immediately appoint an independent counsel to investigate allegations of corruption in the spending of $16 billion on electricity by Obasanjo's government.
