Osita Chidoka is set to become the flag bearer for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the forthcoming Anambra Central Rerun elections. According to reliable sources, the PDP National Working Committee and the Anambra chapter of the Party has concluded plans to nominate Chief Osita Chidoka, this follows the Court of Appeal ruling in Enugu which nullified the election of the former PDP representative Mrs. Uche Ekwunife and ordered for a fresh poll in Anambra Central Senatorial District. Mrs. Uche Ekwunife, has since decamped to the All Progressives Congress (APC) vowing to win the primary elections there in a surprising move to most political observers. According to our source, the party’s resolve to nominate the former Aviation Minister comes on the “heels of a quest by the PDP to present a credible alternative to Uche Ekwunife who has abandoned the party. Osita Chidoka is seen as a very capable politician to challenge for the exulted position. He has served three Nigerian Presidents from President Olusegun Obasanjo, President Umaru Yaradua and Goodluck Jonathan, in different capacities.” The Party also believes that his qualifications which include; a Graduate Diploma in Maritime & Ports Management from the National University of Singapore, Certificate in Global Strategy and Political Economy from Oxford University and Masters Degree in Transport Policy & Logistics, School of Public Policy, George Masons University, USA will position him as one of the bright parliamentarians. If Osita Chidoka emerges the PDP Flagbearer he is expected to be challenged by Chief Victor Umeh of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and either Mrs. Ekwunife or Sharon Ikeazor the APC former woman leader who has since indicated her interest in the race. http://www.thewhistleng.com/fmr-aviation-minister-osita-chidoka-set-to-become-pdps-flagbearer-for-anambra-central-senate-polls |

Founder of the Latter Rain Assembly, Pastor Tunde Bakare has advised President Muhammadu Buhari to implement the recommendations of the 2014 National Conference. In a state of the nation address in his church entitled: ‘Road map to successful change,’ Bakare argued that though the All Progressives Congress, APC, refused to participate in the exercise, the report was done by Nigerians. He said: “Let it be known that in spite of the rejection of our pre-election call for a transition period, Nigeria is now a nation in transition. This transition period will predictably be followed by a revolution which will, in turn, be followed by a reformation that will eventually usher in the desired transformation of our nation. “A key outcome of this process will be the emergence of a true People’s Constitution that will facilitate national integration and provide a suitable governmental framework for the Nigeria of our dreams – a truly federal state with such powers vested exclusively on the federal government as are necessary to firmly and prosperously knit together the federating units upon which residual powers shall be vested. “That promise of true federalism is contained in Article 14 of the Nigerian Charter for National Reconciliation and Integration, which was unanimously adopted and signed by the delegates to the 2014 National Conference, including myself, as the basis of our union. “I appeal to Mr. President not to ignore the report of the 2014 National Conference! God went ahead of you to provide a navigational map with which you can begin to steer the ship of state to a safe destination. “The APC may have refused to participate in the 2014 National Conference, but the report of that conference is completely in tandem with the promise of the APC Manifesto. “The APC Manifesto and the report of the 2014 National Conference are a tag team in waiting, not a thesis and antithesis. Just as this government adopted the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System, IPPIS, the Government Integrated Financial Management Information System, GIFMIS, and the Treasury Single Account, TSA1, which were conceived by the Goodluck Jonathan administration, the Buhari-led government should embrace the report of the 2014 National Conference. “That report may have been produced under a PDP government but it is not a PDP document. It is a Nigerian people’s document. All the delegates to the 2014 National Conference, East, West, North, and South endorsed the report without a single vote on any issue.” On the economy, Bakare said the country must examine the diversification thrust not just in terms of the over-reliance of the federal government on petroleum for export revenue but also in the failure of state and local governments to internally generate revenue. He said, “The need for diversification also brings to the fore the question of viability of states in relation to the need for economies of scale. Can the states, as presently constituted, maximize their endowments even if more power were to be devolved to them? This, I believe, also explains the inability of states to optimize agriculture as it is on the Concurrent Legislative List.” Noting that the present system is severely wasteful, Bakare added that “Left as is, it will continue to generate as well as perpetuate a syndicate of scams and profligacy at all levels of government; we need to change our Grundnorm by creating a true federal system of government while making the welfare and security of our people the raison d’être of government; we need to change our cash and carry judicial and legislative systems.” http://dailypost.ng/2016/01/11/adopt-jonathans-national-conference-report-bakare-tells-buhari/?utm_source=dlvr.it_nnd&utm_medium=twitter |
OUR ECONOMY IS GOING..... GOING......GO |
LAGOS—Chairman of Zinox Group of companies, Mr Leo-Stan Ekeh, yesterday advised President Muhammadu Buhari to urgently engage the private sector to ease the stifling economic situation in the country. Ekeh while addressing a cross section of newsmen in Lagos yesterday said that Nigerian businessmen are going through harrowing times to sustain their businesses now due to the forex restrictions imposed by the present administration, adding that perhaps less than one per cent of Nigerian businessmen will still be standing if current realities remain till March this year. Leo-Stan Ekeh (New) Leo-Stan Ekeh He lamented that not being able to source adequate foreign exchange to transact business has made a lot of businesses lose credibility in international market and if that continues the entire economy may shut down. However, he also expressed optimism that the Nigerian economy can never shut down totally but warned that “the shocks and gaps in the economy at the moment represent our current realities and we must find creative ways to navigate this harsh economic climate. The unprecedented fall in the price of crude oil is a global phenomenon which even the smartest economist couldn’t have predicted. The only regret is that successive governments failed to save for the present rainy day we are experiencing when prices were at their peak. “Having said that, we must always look forward. I sincerely believe that the current administration has the requisite political will and capacity to see the country through this storm and the new mindset of Nigerians to get things done properly also helps. “I also believe that the organized private sector holds the key to a way out of the present quagmire. As a matter of urgency, President Buhari should engage the private sector to save Nigeria. The three levels of the sector drives over 80 per cent of Nigeria’s economy and certainly, we can only move forward when the government carries them along. “Recall that in the run-up to last year’s elections, President Buhari met with representatives of the private sector in Lagos to present his party’s economic plans. This and other engagements certainly went a long way in contributing to his victory at the polls. It is my considered opinion that the time is right for the President to enlist the support of the sector in finding a way out of the current economic challenges,” he added. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2016/01/forex-restriction-99-businesses-may-die-by-march-if-leo-stan-ekeh/ |
Rivers State Information Commissioner , Dr Austin Tam-George has declared that the state government will demand a refund of the N82million expended by former Governor Amaechi on Professor Wole Soyinka’s dinner if it confirms that the Nobel Laureate received part of the the funds in cash. Also, Dr Tam-George declared that the point of departure between former Governor Amaechi and Governor Nyesom Wike was the insistence of Governor Wike that Amaechi observed probity and accountability in all governmental actions, an advice that was thrown overboard by the former governor . Addressing Rivers people via a radio programme on Wednesday in Port Harcourt, Dr Tam-George regretted that the Amaechi’s administration using the Ministry of Information and Communications headed by Ibim Semenitari amassed N1.1billion debt on frivolous expenditure. According to Dr Tam-George : “I will seek the permission of the Governor to formally write Professor Wole Soyinka, a known supporter of Amaechi if he received part of the N82million spent on a 3-hour Dinner hosted for him by the Amaechi administration. “If he agrees that he received such funds, then he will be compelled to refund same to the coffers of Rivers State. At present, we have presented these details to the Police for investigation and prosecution. We shall also take up this matter as a financial crime against the people of Rivers State. ” He said that all the fraudulent actions of the Amaechi administration are being addressed by the Wike administration, pointing out that it will take time for the legal process to be completed because they are financial crimes. The Information Commissioner said that Former Governor Amaechi betrayed the trust of Rivers people by embarking on irresponsible expenses, which led to the mismanagement and fraudulent misuse of N3trillion that accrued to the state under his watch. He said that Governor Nyesom Ezenwo Wike had to leave the Amaechi administration when the former governor refused to adhere to patriotic advice to use Rivers State resources to develop the state. “The point of departure between Former Governor Amaechi and Governor Nyesom Ezenwo Wike was Wike’s commitment to probity and accountability. Governor Wike refused to be part of the financial mismanagement of resources that accrued to the state “, Dr Tam-George told the people of Rivers State. He explained that already Rivers people are witnessing the proper use of resources as they are witnessing transformations across the landscape. Former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi left several months unpaid salaries, pensions abandoned projects and scholarships despite receiving N3trillion as revenue under his watch. http://linkis.com/www.vanguardngr.com/Pvq5U |
Nigerians to start paying more for electricity from February 1, says NERC January 6, 2016 Written by: Adetola Bademosi, Abuja Facebook Twitter Google+ Share The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), on Wednesday, said that the take-off date of the new electricity tariff remains February 1. It also directed all distribution companies to ensure that new customers are provided with meters before they are connected to power source. In a statement issued in Abuja by the Head of Public Affairs, Dr. Usman Abba-Arabi, the commission stated that the date of the take-off of the new tariff had not changed. According to the statement, the new acting Head of the commission, Dr. Anthony Akah, said that the removal of fixed charge under the new tariff regime “was in response to electricity consumers’ complaints and a measure to ensure electricity distribution companies improve on service delivery as their income is dependent on the quantity of electricity used by their customers.” Akah maintained that the commission would continue to engage stakeholders including members of the National Assembly (NASS) to address their concerns on the new tariff regime. “NERC holds National Assembly in high esteem and we are sure that both institutions are working to ensure that the national and consumer interests are protected,” he said. In his explanations, he said there are inbuilt consumer protection mechanisms and incentives for improved service delivery by the DISCOs and fair return on investment in the new tariff order. http://www.tribuneonlineng.com/node/26447 |

Amid a worsening business environment, Deposit Money Banks (DMBs) may, “commence massive staff retrenchment in Q2 2016”, Managing Director, Financial Derivatives Company Limited (FDC), Mr. Bismarck Rewane, has predicted. The influential economist, who made this forecast in his firm’s projection for 2016, also stated that State governments will retrench a significant number of workers in the first quarter of this year. He, however, predicted that, “There will be massive civil works and construction (of roads, bridges, railways) in 2016 (and) oil prices will recover to $55pb by Q2’2016.” Rewane further forecast that, the benchmark interest rate-the Monetary Policy Rate (MPR)- will be reduced to 10per cent per annum while the Cash Reserve Ratio (CRR) to 15per cent.” According to him, “Accommodative monetary policy- lower interest rate and increase liquidity -and expansionary fiscal policy- bailout payment and N6trillion proposed budget will reflate the economy.” Other predictions made by the FDC boss include that, “Inflation will spike to 11per cent in Q1’2016 before falling to 9per cent in Q3’2016; official rate of the naira will depreciate to N220/$ (and) parallel market rate will appreciate to N235/$.” Industry sources said that although 2015 was tough, banks are bracing for an even more difficult 2016. This is because with the price of oil, which is responsible for 70 per cent of Nigeria’s revenue predicted to fall to $20 per barrel, lenders may be forced to restructure their credits and debts locally and abroad. Findings reveal that majority of the debtor oil firms and others linked to it – that have calculated their repayment terms with the pre June 2014 price of crude oil, would be compelled to renegotiate their loans. This implies that banking industry’s ratio of nonperforming loans would exceed the stipulated 5 per cent threshold. Indeed, in a statement issued last month, Fitch Ratings noted that Nigerian banks’ non-performing loans have been rising over the past 12 months. “We expect them to rise above the central bank’s five per cent of total loans cap but to remain below 10 per cent at year-end,” the agency stated. Similarly, banks that have borrowed foreign denominated currencies would also be forced to restructure their debts as the naira is being expected to be devalued by a minimum of 22 per cent – meaning that lenders would have to put in extra efforts to generate enough cash to repay their debts. Furthermore, analysts point out that banks are still reeling from the full implementation of the Treasury Single Account (TSA). It will be recalled that the policy led to the withdrawal of public sector deposits-a cheap source of funds for lenders. A bank executive, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the issue, told this newspaper that the tough times that the industry faced last year were likely to be child’s play compared to what it will face this year. SEE ALSO: 2016: Mark tasks Buhari on economy He pointed out that the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) recent prediction that oil could slump to $20 per barrel in 2016 had made prospects for Nigerian banks this year worse. He said, “If the IMF’s prediction comes to pass, the impact on the industry will be devastating. Banks are highly exposed to the oil and gas sector. But these loans were given out when oil prices were above $100. “Since June 2014 when the sharp decline in the price of oil started, many of these companies have begun to default on their loans. This has resulted in most banks having to restructure these loans. “But any further decline in oil prices as the IMF is predicting will clearly make the situation unmanageable and we could have another crisis triggered by a surge in Non-Performing Loans (NPLs).” The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) in its Financial Stability Report for December 2014 had noted that sustained low oil prices could trigger an increase in NPLs especially as the exposure to the oil and gas sector accounted for 25.70 per cent or N3.24 trillion of the total credits of N12.63 trillion at end- December 2014. https://www.today.ng/business/61678/banks-to-sack-staff-in-second-quarter-rewane?utm_source=&utm_medium=twitter |

Barely four days to the Bayelsa State governorship supplementary election in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of the State, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has said it will use all democratic means necessary to resist any attempt to rig the poll by the All Progressives Congress, APC. The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh on Tuesday, maintained that Southern Ijaw is a well-known PDP stronghold, adding that it would not accept any result that does not reflect the will of the people. The party alleged that the opposition party was planning to use compromised security operatives and INEC officials to produce fictitious votes and declare itself winner. The statement reads, “We issue this statement as direct notice to the APC and their compromised INEC, military and other security operatives who have been stationed to ostensibly assist to produce fictitious votes with which the APC intends to declare itself winner. “Let it be known to all that the PDP is fully mobilized for Saturday’s supplementary election. Our members across Southern Ijaw have been stationed in every polling unit, every collation center and every exit and entry point in the area, and have been directed to use all means available in a democracy to stop the APC in their trail. “Southern Ijaw Local Government is a well-known stronghold of the PDP and we will not in any way accept anything short of free, fair and credible elections, abundantly reflecting the will of the people. Anything to the contrary will attract terrible consequences. We restate our resolve that never again would the PDP allow itself to be manipulated out in any election at any level, no matter the intimidation by the APC-led administration. “Consequent upon our loss of confidence in INEC and security agencies, we hereby make public our instruction to our members and supporters not to leave the polling area after casting their votes but to remain alert within the distance provided by the law and go ahead to use all means necessary to defend and protect their votes, should there be any attempt by anybody to rig the process. “The PDP will intently monitor and keep records of activities, including all votes cast in every polling unit in Southern Ijaw and our members will not hesitate to unleash a legitimate anger, if at any point in collation, fictitious figures appear. In this regard, any INEC official who becomes a tool in the hands of evil will have him or herself to blame. “Finally, we call on the international community and all well-meaning Nigerians to note the ceaseless undemocratic activities of the APC-led Federal Government and to hold it responsible should there be any breakdown of law and order during the Saturday’s supplementary election in Bayelsa state.” http://dailypost.ng/2016/01/05/bayelsa-we-will-resist-any-attempt-by-apc-to-rig-southern-ijaw-poll-pdp/?utm_source=dlvr_dp&utm_medium=twitter |

By Gbenga Olarinoye Osogbo—All Progressives Congress APC, in Osun State has urged the citizens of the state to observe a three-day special fasting and praying period from tomorrow, January 6 to Friday, January 8, 2016. The state chairman of the party, Gboyega Famodun gave the directives in a statement by the Director of Publicity, Research and Strategy of the party in the state Mr Kunle Oyatomi in Osogbo yesterday. According to the chairman, everybody in Osun owes it a duty to themselves and the state to seek divine intervention “so that our last year losses may be restored.” The other reason for this fasting and prayers, the party said was to plead for God’s favour so that 2016 will reverse the unpleasant fortunes of last year, and bring prosperity and blessing instead. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2016/01/apc-calls-for-3-day-fast-in-osun/ |

By Abiodun Alade Former President Goodluck Jonathan has dedicated The African Sun Times’s International Persons of the Year awards to Nigerians. He noted that Nigerians are more deserving of the honour. “I thank The African Sun Times for naming me as its International Person of the year, 2015. I am indeed humbled by this honour. When I think about it, I understand why this medium may have thought me worthy of such an honour. However, I believe that my people, the Nigerian people, are more deserving of this honour. We, the Nigerian people put to shame naysayers and prophets of doom and in 2015, we held a most transparent, violence free and credible elections that transferred power from one political party to another and from an incumbent to the opposition, without rancour, bitterness or strife. In the process, we proved that nobody’s political ambition is worth the blood of any Nigerian or any national of any country for that matter. That to me, is a most worthy testimonial of the character of the Nigerian nation and the resilience of our people which is why I dedicate this honour to them. May God continue to bless Nigeria and Nigerians. GEJ,” he posted on his verified Facebook account. The African Sun Times, Africa’s number one and largest newspaper in America, on Monday announced Jonathan as its International Persons of the Year. “Dr. Jonathan, who shocked the whole world by swiftly calling current Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari and conceding his defeat in the March 29 Nigerian presidential election, thereby stopping the predictions of violent bloodshed in Nigeria, and keeping his words that he would not allow the blood of a Nigerian to be shed to further his political ambitions. President Jonathan must be applauded for creating a solid foundation for the growth of democracy in Africa. The world has started to recognize President Jonathan’s courageous act,” the newspaper wrote. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2016/01/jonathan-dedicates-international-awards-to-nigerians/ |
