Politics › Buhari Threatens Niger Delta Militants, Says Defeating Them Won’t Be Tough by erunz(op): 6:00pm On Jan 19, 2016
President Muhammadu Buhari has vowed to deal decisively with the seeming resurgence of oil theft, vandalism of pipelines and insecurity in the Niger Delta.
Declaring that the Nigerian Armed Forces had already dealt “deadly blows” on Boko Haram, Mr. Buhari said the activities of oil thieves and vandals would soon be brought to an end, according to a statement by his spokesperson, Garba Shehu, on Tuesday.
“The oil thieves and abductors are a less problematic target. We will re-organise and deal with them,” he was quoted as saying.
Speaking Tuesday in Abu Dhabi, the president warned telecommunication companies operating in Nigeria not to place their desire for huge profits above the security needs of the country.
Speaking at an interactive forum with members of the Nigerian Community in Abu Dhabi, President Buhari said the war against terrorism can only be won with the collective effort and commitment of everyone.
Remarking that the registration of all mobile phone users without exception will help the security agencies to pre-empt terrorist attacks, the president said telecommunication companies operating in Nigeria must adhere to the rules and guidelines of the Nigerian Communications Commission in this regard.
‎President Buhari assured Nigerians at the session that his administration’s war against corruption will continue to be vigorously pursued.
The president pledged that more persons who have abused the public trust will be exposed and brought to justice soon, adding that his government was committed to re-establishing former standards of accountability and probity in the management of public funds which were jettisoned under past administrations.
‎The president appealed for more patience and understanding from Nigerians as his administration takes steps to safeguard the economy from the shock of falling oil prices.
“In the face of our new economic reality of dwindling oil prices, there are a number of things we can really do without to preserve our economy.
“We must develop the capacity to feed ourselves and we should be spending our resources on real development projects, not luxuries,” he said.

Politics › Oshiomhole To Spend 1.4B On Tea And Recharge Cards by erunz(op): 1:42pm On Jan 15, 2016
The 2016 budget presented by Oshiomhole to the House of Assembly last year has continued to generate controversy over issues the PDP and most members of the public tagged a budget of deceit and misappropriation . A cursory look at the budget shows that Oshiomhole intends to spend N=1,400,000,000.00 on tea and recharge cards. Although the APC through its Deputy Governor dismissed the claim by the PDP and urged members of the public to discountenance anything from the PDP but what is surprising is that the deputy governor failed to deny whether such amount of money has been budgeted for tea and recharge card or not. Angry reactions from citizens has continued to trail the budget and the government also unable to put up a good defense. Other areas of the budget that have also draw criticism is N1,700,000,000.00 for feeding, drinks and ticketing for the governor’s family while N=2,550,000,000.00 was budgeted for fueling of governors convoy and DTA for governor’s trip within the country and Of course the contentious security vote of =N=5Billion with the hope of increasing it in a supplementary budge. The irony of this budget is that the government hopes to spend a paltry sum of N300m in Agriculture while billions were budgeted for frivolities. How the Comrade governor intend to defend this budget remains to be seen particularly now that his government failed to realise most of the things budgeted for last year.

Politics › Senators Suspect Presidency Behind missing 2016 Budget Documents-PREMIUM TIMES by erunz(op): 5:30pm On Jan 13, 2016
Some Nigerian senators said Wednesday they are suspicious the Nigerian presidency is behind the sudden disappearance of the 2016 budget submitted to the National Assembly.
The lawmakers said the intelligence they had so far gathered suggested that the presidency discreetly withdrew the documents to enable it to make some adjustments to it.
The president had presented the budget to a joint session of the legislature in December.
PREMIUM TIMES had reported Tuesday that the senate, during an executive session, declared the documents missing.
The Senate Leader, Mohammed Ndume, sources said, informed the senators, upon resumption from the Christmas/New Year break, that deliberations on the budget could not commence until fresh copies of the documents were obtained from the presidency, Ministry of Finance or its national planning counterpart.
However, some senators, who requested not to be named so as not to anger the presidency, told PREMIUM TIMES they had since realised the budget was discreetly withdrawn by the president in order to make some adjustments.
The senators said the presidency had in the past two weeks been combing through the budgets with a view to removing provisions that had so far exposed the administration to ridicule.

“The executive have now started delivering fresh copies of the budget documents to the National Assembly,” one of the senators said.
“The details in the copies they are delivering are different from those in the version delivered to the National Assembly in December. Some adjustments have been made.”
But the presidency has however denied withdrawing the document.
The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, said only Mr. Buhari could withdraw the budget but had not done so.
He suggested that the issue of missing budgets should not arise because several copies of the document were sent to the legislature.
“Nobody except the president can withdraw the budget; as far as we know, he hasn’t done that,” Mr. Shehu said in a response to PREMIUM TIMES enquiry on the matter Tuesday.
“The copies in their hundreds have been delivered to both chambers of the National Assembly.
“By tradition, once the budget is submitted, it ceases to be our property. Inquiries should be directed to the appropriate quarters.”

When contacted, the Minister of State for National Planning, Zainab Ahmed, expressed shock at reports of missing budget.

She explained that ahead of Tuesday’s resumption of the Senate and House of Representatives, more than 400 copies of the document were delivered to the two chambers on Monday by the printer, for distribution to all members.

“After the official presentation of the budget by the President on December 22, 2015, both hard and soft copies were given to some key members of the Assembly. How can anyone say all the copies are missing?” she said in an interview with PREMIUM TIMES.

“Immediately after the presentation (by Buhari), most of the members went on break. But a printer was given the job to produce the document for distribution to all members on resumption.

“On Monday, the printer delivered more than 400 copies to the National Assembly for distribution to members and their aides. Another 100 copies were delivered this afternoon (Tuesday). Therefore, the same budget cannot be said to be missing.”

Mrs. Ahmed argued that if there is need to withdraw the budget, the same process with which it was presented by the president to the legislature would be followed.

Politics › Breaking: Presidency Distances Self From Missing 2016 Budget by erunz(op): 4:52pm On Jan 13, 2016
By Ikenna Asomba

As outrage continued to trail the reportedly missing 2016 Budget presented to the joint session of the National Assembly on Tuesday, December 22, 2015, by President Muhammadu Buhari, the Presidency, on Tuesday night, distanced itself from the missing budget.

Disturbed by the raging enquiries posed by Nigerian social media users, following the news of the missing budget, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, defended the Presidency, noting that President Buhari has not withdrawn the budget as speculated in the media.

Shehu in a series of tweets via his Twitter handle @GarShehu said: “Enquiries about the budget: Nobody except the President can withdraw the budget. As far as we know, he hasn’t done that.

The whole world is alerted to the new Gestapo by masked ‘military’ men working for the APC and invading communities in Rivers State.

As at this time about 20 military trucks with fully armed masked men are invading communities in ONELGA and arresting villagers and innocent people suspected to be PDP members.

Kreigani and Aligu communities have already been sacked. The Divisional Police Officers for Omoku and Egi as well as the Mopol Unit Commander claim not to be aware of who authorised the invasion. The true identities of the invaders are still unknown. The entire local government area is now in pandemonium.

Just recently, after the last visit of the Minister for Transport to Rivers State, Masked men claiming to be Security men have invaded several communities and burnt properties worth several millions of naira. Deaths have also been recorded in these operations.

This is the second invasion of ONELGA. PDP members have come under attack in Abonnema, Ogu/Bolo, Buguma, Port Harcourt, Gokana, Obio Akpor, Emohua, Abua local government areas among others.

The APC in Rivers State has a death squad and it does appear that the Security Services are backing them. The lives of Rivers people are under threat. Anarchy is being invited.

Politics › Soldiers Bar 120 Chibok Parents, #BBOG Delegation From Entering Abuja by erunz(op): 11:16am On Jan 13, 2016
The #BringBackOurGirls group and parents of the abducted Chibok girls were on Tuesday, set to carry out a march to the presidency, on behalf of their daughters who’re still in Boko Haram’s captivity.

However, soldiers of the Nigerian Army stopped the over 120 Chibok parents and #BBOG delegation from making the trip to Aso Villa, Abuja.

The army’s justification for the soldiers’ action was that ‘the fragile security context could have exposed such a large contingent of the parents to risks ‘.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the group demanded an apology from the Nigerian Army and ‘a public commitment that the military will transport them out to Abuja tomorrow to enable them lead the march to meet with the president on Thursday’.

Read statement below.

Towards our earlier announced march together with the parents of our abducted Chibok girls and the Chibok community to re-engage with the president on the matter of their rescue this Thursday 14 January, a delegation of parents left Chibok this morning Tuesday 12 January for a 2-day journey to Abuja.
Despite their meagre income, the over 120 parents were determined and paid the bus fare from Chibok to enable them to partake in the march to re-engage with the president after the first meeting of 8 July 2015.
At about 8 am, we received information that they had been barred from proceeding by soldiers. We wondered if this was perhaps a random solitary act of some overzealous checkpoint leader or an action directed from the military high-command.
Not wanting to speculate and escalate without establishing the facts behind the episode, we reached out to the administration through Pastor Tunde Bakare — a well-respected citizen and co-advocate of the cause of our Chibok girls.
We were subsequently informed the buses carrying our Chibok girls’ parents had been allowed to proceed on the journey to Abuja. However, only this evening, we were again informed that the checkpoint officers in Askira had allowed only 4 of the bus load of parents and held back 3 but we can factually confirm that 5 buses in all were held back — 2 in Chibok and 3 in Askira.
Tonight, the top echelon of the military and security team reached out apologising for the uncalled for and regrettable incident. Reasons adduced were that the fragile security context could have exposed such a large contingent of the parents to risks. Whilst we appreciate the legitimate safety concerns, we are convinced however that it could have been better handled with dignified treatment of parents who have been heartbroken over the last 638 days of their daughters’ captivity.
We therefore demanded :
I. a public apology to parent for this avoidable and unfortunate episode, and
II. a public commitment that the military will transport them out to Abuja tomorrow to enable them lead the march to meet with the president on Thursday.
The military has accepted and confirmed to us that it will fully handle the movement of the remaining remaining parents to Abuja tomorrow Wednesday 13 January. The parents are all set to re-embark on their botched journey while we await the arrival of the set that successfully left Chibok earlier today for Abuja.
We now await the public apology to the parents and the Chibok community.

Politics › Resign Now, Civil Society Coalitiontells Aregbesola Over Sacked Workers In Osun by erunz(op): 12:20pm On Jan 12, 2016
Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) under the aegis of Civil Societies
Coalition for the Emancipation of Osun State(CSCEO) has advised the
State governor,Mr. Rauf Adesoji Aregbesola to tender his resignation
letter from office over illegal sacked of no fewer than 141 members of
the Academic and Non-Academic Staff Union of the two Colleges of
Education in the State, thereby condemning the State government action
over the matter.

Meanwhile, the group also disclosed that Mr. Aregbesola has directed
the management of the two Polytechnics in the State to give sack
letters to over 100 both academic and non- academic staff of the
institutions this week, adding that the development had shown that Mr
Aregbesola did not not have capability to rule the State again and he
should resign honourably for visionary leader to take the mantle of
State leadership.

The rights group maintained that the illegal action of Mr Aregbesola
confirmed the group's earlier prediction that Aregbesola had concluded
arrangement to sack Nine thousand five hundred and eighty two (9,582)
workers across the 30 local governments and Modakeke Area Council,
Civil Service, tertiary institutions, teaching and other public
service establishment of the State.

It however, thrown its weight behind the on-going strike embarked upon
by the medical doctors under the aegis of Association of Resident
Doctors (ARD) and their counterparts, Osun State Association of
Medical and Dental Officers (OSAMDO),supporting the decision of the
Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria (MDCAN) of the
Ladoke Akintola University of Technology Teaching Hospital,Osogbo, to
join the ongoing strike as part of their solidarity to their
colleagues in the State.Civil Service.

This was contained in a statement issued and signed by the CSCEO's
Chairman, Comrade Adeniyi,Alimi sulaiman, which a copy was made
available to newsmen in Osogbo on Monday, vowed that the Civil Society
group has prepared to resist all the anti-workers policies of Rauf
Adesoji Aregbesola’s government which was absolutely contrary to the
Labour Law,Labour and Allied Matter Act,workmen's Compensation Act and
Locus Classicus Labour Act,urging the affected workers in the State
owned tertiary institutions to remain steadfast in rejection of the
obnoxious and illegal termination of their appointment by the ignoble
and satanic government of Rauf Aregbesola.

Comrade Sulaiman who also doubled as Executive Chairman,Centre for
Human Rights and Social Justice(CHRSJ),advised the State government
under Aregbesola's
watch to rescind its decision by withdrawing the sack letters issued
to the affected workers in the State owned tertiary institutions
immediately and tendered the unreserved public apology to the affected
workers,also

He then urged the governor to withdraw the threaten statement of
sacking of over 500 medical doctors in the service of the state
government and meeting their legal home demands, adding that failure of
the State government to yield to the warning against this illegal action, might
lead to embarking of Statewide continuous peaceful protest to be
tagged "Operation Stop Nonsense,Operation Counter Anti-Workers
agenda,Operation Paid the Workers Salaries,Operation Enough is
Enough,Operation Bring out bailout Fund,Operation Aregbesola Must Go
and host of others".

Speaking further on the development, the CSCEO boss declared that the
group has ready to team up with the leadership of the affected union
to champion the struggle against the State government on its current
anti workers policies which should not be allowed to stand, insisting
that Mr Aregbesola had shown his inability to govern the State again
and he should resign immediately without further delaying.

His words: “Aregbesola’s administration is deficient in honesty, deficient in
honour and deficient in truth. The only thing it has in surplus is
saying something and doing something else. His financial recklessness
which resulted in borrowing in excess of over Four Hundred Billion
naira(N400billion) which he claimed to be spent on projects which are
not in the interest of the welfare of our people had left Osun people
poorer. So great is his dishonesty that when he says ‘good morning’
one needs to cross-check three times before answering”.

Also speaking on the educational policy of the State government,
Comrade Sulaiman maintained that Aregbesola promised to build
twenty-seven (27) model schools across the State with the N11.4
billion acclaimed free interest loan obtained from “SUKUK” in 2013 and
the Federal Government of Nigeria through the Universal Basic
Education Commission (UBEC) also released sum of N13.9billion to the
State for the same purpose, stressing that the question in the lips of
the right thinking citizens of the State now is that what happened to
the UBEC’s fund released for the same purpose?, adding that Aregbesola
had succeeded in shortchanging the good people of the State for his
own selfish benefit and must be made to account for it.

Politics › Olisa Metuh Sues EFCC, AGF Over Continued Detention by erunz(op): 6:03pm On Jan 11, 2016
National Publicity Secretary of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Olisa Metuh, who’s being detained by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has filed a fundamental rights enforcement suit before a Federal High Court in Lagos requesting for his immediate release.
METUH
Metuh
Metuh, was taken into custody by the EFCC on Tuesday, January 5, after being linked to the $2.1 billion arms fund allegedly diverted by former National Security Adviser (NSA), Sambo Dasuki.
The EFCC claimed that Metuh collected N400 million from the said funds but he has maintained repeatedly that the money traced to him was for an undisclosed service he offered to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan.
In the suit filed through his lawyer, Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa, the PDP spokesperson claimed that his incarceration by the anti-graft agency is part of a sinister plan by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to cripple opposition and make Nigeria a one-party country.
Adegboruwa, who personally deposed to an affidavit of urgency in support of Metuh’s suit, noted that President Muhammadu Buhari, since his swearing-in in May, 2015 had launched “a massive attack upon the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, in the guise of fighting a nebulous anti-corruption war.”
Metuh, in his suit filed that his detention by the EFCC without access to his family and lawyer, and without being charged to court, is a violation of his fundamental rights guaranteed under sections 33, 34, 35, 38, 40, 41, 42, 43 and 44 of the Constitution.
Metuh’s continued detention, according to his lawyer also breached the African Charter on Human and Peoples Rights (Ratification and Enforcement) Act, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.
He also noted that Metuh’s life might be in danger as the condition he is being kept in might be untidy and unhygienic which would lead to ill health.
“I verily believe that the applicant has not committed any offence other than his principled opposition to the ruling government and his arrest and detention are meant to silence the opposition and create a one-party state by the respondents to allow the APC to dominate Nigeria.
“Nobody knows the present whereabouts of the applicant, as to his exact place of detention, his condition in the custody and how he is faring. Recently, detainees in the custody of the 1st respondent have been dying due to lack of proper care and adequate medical facilities, as the 1st respondent is not normally well-funded to function effectively, except to be used by the ruling government to hound the opposition.”
He requested the court to order the EFCC and the Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami (SAN), sued as the 2nd defendant, to immediately release Metuh.
The suit has not been assigned to any judge yet nor has a hearing date been fixed.
