Celebrities / Chris Kelly, Half Of KRIS KROSS Duo, Dies by escottkr8t(m): 7:47am On May 02, 2013
(CNN) - Chris Kelly, one-half of the 1990s rap duo Kris Kross, died Wednesday at an Atlanta hospital after he was found unresponsive at his home. He was 34.

How Kelly died isn't known, and the Fulton County Medical Examiner's Office said an autopsy is planned for Thursday.

Kelly, together with Chris Smith, shot to stardom in 1992 with "Jump," which spent eight weeks on top of the Billboard Hot 100.

The duo opened for Michael Jackson that year on his Dangerous World Tour.

And their penchant for wearing their clothes backward were, at least for a time, widely emulated.

"I'm wearing my clothes to work backwards tomorrow," Michael Skolnik, editor in chief of the hip hop site Global Grind said, when he learned of the death.

Leslie Tookes, a CNN project coordinator, lived next door to Kelly. Like others, she too was saddened by his untimely death.

"We often heard him playing classical music and the piano," Tookes said. "He was a low-key type of person who was very talented and courteous, friendly and wonderful to our 5-year-old twins.

"Indeed, gone too soon."

Nairaland / General / 3 More Detained In Boston Attack by escottkr8t(m): 10:05pm On May 01, 2013
(CNN) - (CNN) -- Three friends of Boston Marathon bomb suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev have been jailed on charges they tried to throw investigators off Tsarnaev's trail, federal prosecutors announced Wednesday.

Two of them, Azamat Tazhayakov and Dias Kadyrbayev, were already in federal custody on immigration charges, their lawyers told CNN. Both are from Kazakhstan and had student visas.

The third, Robel Phillipos, is a U.S. citizen. Tazhayakov and Kadyrbayev are charged with obstruction of justice, while Phillipos is charged with lying to federal agents probing the bombing, according to court papers.

They made their first appearance before a federal magistrate Wednesday afternoon, when they were read the charges against them and informed of their rights.

Latest on the investigation

All three are accused of removing items from Tsarnaev's dorm room after the April 15 bombings, which killed three people and wounded more than 260.
Nairaland / General / Leave Mandela Alone!!!!! by escottkr8t(m): 3:25pm On Apr 30, 2013
A video of a frail and unamused looking Nelson Mandela surrounded by South African President Jacob Zuma and other officials has prompted cries of political exploitation by the government.

In the footage released by the South African Broadcasting Corp., the 94-year-old Mandela sits in a chair at his Johannesburg home, barely moving and never smiling as leaders from the governing African National Congress arrange themselves for a photo opportunity.

At one point Mandela's grandson takes a picture with flash, causing him to close his eyes and purse his lips. The former president is sensitive to flash photography from his years laboring in quarries during his imprisonment under the country's apartheid government.

Zuma says Mandela is in "good shape," but the footage seems to show him looking anything but -- and the stunt provoked outrage from many in South Africa who accused the ANC and SABC of parading the country's anti-apartheid hero on television for their own benefit.

"Very sad seeing the footage of Madiba. And who was the idiot who took a pic of him with a flash? Disgraceful. Leave him alone", tweeted Johannesburg radio DJ John Robbie, using the clan name by which Mandela is widely referred to in South Africa. Another Twitter user, Brent Lindeque, wrote: "After everything Madiba has done for us this is how they treat him. Like an animal at the zoo. Shame on the ANC!"

"[A]fter months of attacking media for 'invading' Mandela's privacy, ANC today released an invasive video of a clearly ailing and grim Mandela," tweeted journalist Geoffrey York. One Johannesburg radio station wrote: "The way #Madiba was paraded on SABC TV this evening was horrible! Grotesque 'journalism'. All involved should hang their heads in shame!"

Mandela endured 27 years in prison before becoming the country's first black president in 1994. He has become increasingly frail over the years and has been hospitalized three times in the past five months, most recently for a lung infection in March.

So true, and they're too busy achieving "first to comment status on different blogs" you know we're in trouble when people start taking that as an achievement.

Politics / Nigerians And The Celebration Of Mediocrity by escottkr8t(m): 2:51am On Apr 03, 2013
The writer, in her penultimate piece, shares her view on mediocrity within the Nigerian space.
I used to think corruption was Nigeria’s biggest problem, but I’m starting to doubt that. Every time I probe into one of the many issues this country is encountering, at the core I find the same phenomenon: the widespread celebration of mediocrity. Unrebuked underachievement seems to be the rule in all facets of society. A governor building a single road during his entire tenure is revered like the next Messiah; an averagely talented author who writes a colourless book gets sponsored to represent Nigerian literature overseas; and a young woman with no secretarial skills to speak of gets promoted to the oga’s office faster than any of her properly trained colleagues.
Needless to say the politician is probably hailed by those awaiting part of the loot he is stealing; the writer might have got his sponsorship from buddies he has been sucking up to in hagiographies paid for by the subjects; and the young woman’s promotion is likely to be an exchange for sex or the expectancy of it. So some form of corruption plays a role in all of these examples.
But corruption per se does not necessarily stand in the way of development. Otherwise a country like Indonesia—number 118 on Transparency International’s Corruption Perception Index, not that far removed from Nigeria’s 139—would never have made it to the G-20 group of major economies. An even more serious obstacle to development is the lack of repercussions for underachievement. Who in Nigeria is ever held accountable for substandard performance?
Since I came here, I have been on a futile search for a stable internet connection that does what it promises. I started with an MTN FastLink modem (I consider the name a cruel joke), and then I moved on to an Etisalat MiFi connection (I regularly had to keep myself from throwing the bloody thing against the wall), and now I am trying out Cobranet’s U-Go. I shouldn’t have bothered: equally crap. And everyone knows this. They groan and mutter and tweet about it. But still, to my surprise, no one calls for a class-action suit against those deceitful providers.
A one-day conference I attended last year left me equally puzzled. Organisation, attendance and outcome left a lot to be desired, if you ask me. But over cocktails, after the closing ceremony, everyone congratulated each other over the wonderful conference—that started two hours late, of which the most animated part was undeniably lunch, and in which not a single tangible decision had been made. This left me wondering whether we had attended the same event.
I thought these issues to be unrelated at first, but gradually I came to see the connection. Nigeria is the opposite of a meritocracy: you do not earn by achieving. You get to be who and where you are by knowing the right people. Whether you work in an office, for an enterprise or an NGO, at a construction site or in government, your abilities hardly ever are the reason you got there. Performing well, let alone with excellence, is not a requirement, in fact, it is discouraged. It would be too threatening: showing you’re more intelligent, capable or competent than the ‘oga at the top’ (who, as a rule, is not an overachiever either) is career suicide.
It is an attitude that trickles down from the very top, its symptoms eventually showing up in all of society, from bad governance to bad service to bad craftsmanship.
Where excellence meets no gratification, what remains to be celebrated is underachievement. That is why it is not uncommon to find Nigerians congratulating each other over substandard results. It is safer to cuddle up comfortably in shared mediocrity than to question it, since the latter might also expose your own less than exceptional performance. Add to this the taboo of criticising anyone senior or higher up and it explains why so many join in the admiration of the emperor’s new clothes.~ Femke Becomes Funke: Iya Funke Was Here By Femke van Zeijl

Health / Creative Stress by escottkr8t(m): 1:50pm On Mar 16, 2013
I have learned that there are at least two sorts of stress. The kind that makes you want to curl up in a fetal position (after you've yanked all your hair out in a fit of rage) and the kind that makes you want to go out and get shit done! Today, I am suffering from the former. I shan't dwell on that, though. I'd much rather talk about the latter.

The latter, we shall term 'creative stress'. I was thinking about copyrighting the term when I found out that someone else had already coined it! C'est la vie. Anyway, I took a look at the guy's website and learned that our ideas of creative stress are similar, though hardly identical. From what I could surmise (he wrote a book about it), he thinks of creative stress as the conversion of negative stress into something that can help to build a person into a better version of him/herself. I agree that creative stress can and will, in fact, make a person better, but I do not necessarily believe that negative stress can be transmuted in this way.

Negative stress is, by definition, negative. How one responds and grows in the face of negativity is the key to one's self-improvement. Creative stress, on the other hand, is any stress which, in and of itself, boosts one's creativity. Creative stress spurs us into action, it makes us think of things as we never have before, it gives us so many ideas that we don't know what do with them. It makes us bigger, faster, stronger. Better. I've done my best work under a great deal of stress and am certain that I wouldn't have done as well without the stress.

So how does one harness the power of creative stress? First, you have to recognize it as such. Unlike its negative counterpart, creative stress is an infusion of energy. You may feel restless, hyperactive, excitable, and you need an outlet. At least, you feel as though you do. Don't let that energy go to waste. Use it as the Lord intended! And there is no wrong way to use it.

Some people write (I can't say I'm one of them)—mine is far more systematic. They write in journals or diaries. They write poetry, prose, and who-knows-what-else. Others paint or draw or make music. I think some people make love. I do busy work. Work-related busy work and finances and spreadsheets and study reports. And I do them well.

Creative stress = creative energy. If we are receptive to it, we open up myriad possibilities where there may have been very few before. And creativity, as noted from my examples above, isn't necessarily artistic. As adults, some of us have allowed our creativity to stagnate under the burden of negative stress (or mere hubris). We need to take back the creativity, own that creative stress, and make it our bitch!

And then do the same for negative stress. But that is a post for another day.~ gotten from www.jsmcbride.com
Literature / Re: Literature To Nigerian Leaders. by escottkr8t(m): 7:09am On Mar 13, 2013
Greedy politicians, fuckin up the nation, so we gotta keep our eyes spread like them asians, when they die let the ice spread to relations, I be my music so I pray I spread through the nations, voice in my head say overcome temptations, I keep from running mad but I see weird faces, if my rhymes were bullets then ull have too many patients, I can't wait for my turn cuz I aint got patience, gotta find my path like my life is in the matrix, and I shall stand strong like the rock the of ages, ages, turning on the pages of life, government got me standing on the edge of the knife, but I aint off, cus the strife is a test, and I always aim to get above the rest, cuz my country's got to be a victim of less,so we gotta work hard to turn it to the friggin best I guess.

We don't have no water, we aint got light
We sleep in the heat of dark every night
They say something's got to give but the somethings out of sight,
So I guess all we have is the will to fight
Yeah we got to fight, fight for our rIght
But not with bombs or arms, that just aint right
We have to us our voices cuz words have might
They try to raise the bar so we gotta reach the height. huh
Now let's talk about pollution
The rate of people dieing now has to cause. Some confusion
This occurs by a process called diffusion
Gas spreads to a point of lower concentration
Though its called low, its high and aint no contemplation..... ~ by Brian Freeman a 16 year old Nigerian.
Romance / Re: Signs You Have A Cheating Wife by escottkr8t(m): 11:09pm On Mar 10, 2013
For number 1,2,4&5. I'll find her a man grin

dotcom_na_me_na_me: You're married to a wonderful girl, you have a solid relationship and she would never cheat on you... right? Wrong. Men, never underestimate a woman's willingness to stray; women can be just as unfaithful as men in relationships. Think of Amanda Holden, Amy Winehouse, even Princess Diana. Having a cheating wife is a concern that haunts many men in relationships. Just the thought of your lady putting her paws on another man makes your skin crawl. That's why it's always important to keep a lookout for some of the surefire signs you have a cheating wife.

So, what are some of the signs you have a cheating wife, and what can you do about them? Get your answers here before you start accusing her of being a two-timer.
signs you have a cheating wife
One of the major signs you have a cheating wife is if you spot any changes in her behaviour, so if she's always been a guy's girl and has a lot of male friends, don't get paranoid when you hear that she was seen on the high street with her 'mate' Max.

The following are five signs you have a cheating wife:

1- She's no longer as needy

If she was never able to go shopping, exercise or cross the street alone, and she suddenly doesn't need your company, it may mean that someone else is filling your shoes. It's possible that she just needs time to herself, but if she's unusually independent when she used to be overly needy, it may signal that she's just no longer as needy... of you.

2- She no longer gets angry

She used to get angry if you didn't want to meet her for lunch or come out with her and her friends, but now everything you do is all right by her. Once upon a time, your every move had to be premeditated, but now all the small things you used to mess up aren't enraging her. This could be a good thing, but it should make you wonder why she no longer cares.

3- She's being secretive

She's no longer sharing her daily events with you, and in order to find out what she's doing, you'd have to hack into her BlackBerry because she's not volunteering any information regarding the goings-on in her life.

4- She places the focus on you

When you do ask her questions, she turns the tables on you. Once a motormouth, it now seems her batteries have run out, and when you ask her how her night was, mum's the only word. It's now all about you, you, you, rather than "I did this" and "I went here last night."

5- She showers you with pleasure

Now that it's all about you, your girlfriend is always complimenting you, asking you to go out, giving you "I love you" cards for no reason whatsoever, and even offering to wash your car and watch the boxing match with you. While these gestures are more than sweet, it's this kind of overcompensating behaviour that can make one suspicious. If she's bombarding you with niceties, it might be nice to know what's really going on.
