Newspot, however, gathered that a suspected ritualist who is said to be one of the masterminds of the killings has been arrested in the early hours of Sunday following a failed attempt to kill his victim in the area.

Our correspondent gathered on Monday that the suspect was arrested by local security popularly known as Soludero.

A resident who witnessed the incident said, “The residents of Sasa community with the help of local security popularly called (Soludero) this morning arrested a suspect in Sasa area of Akinyele local government while he was trying to murder a woman.

“While he was been interrogated, The suspect confessed that He has been involved in 8 killings recently in Akinyele local government and his last killing was at Sasa, where he murdered a lady.

“He has so far been handed over to the Nigeria police for further investigation while work is still ongoing to fish out other perpetrators”.

Chairman of the Caretaker Committee in Akinyele Local Government Area, Hon. Kazeem Adekunle confirmed the arrest of the suspect to Newspot on Monday.

Adekunle told Newspot that the case would be transferred to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), today.

He said, “Yes and it will be transferred to the state CID today. Sir, I cannot be talking about this here. Thanks”.

Public Relations Officer of the state Police Command, Mr. Olugbenga Fadeyi when contacted, said that the suspect is still helping the police for further investigation.

Fadeyi in a telephone conversation with Newspot said, “Yes, one man was arrested. He is currently in police custody to determine his level of involvement.

“He was arrested in the area where the woman that was washing cloth was killed last week and he could not give a satisfactory answer”.

About 2,229 delegates will participate at the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship primary billed for the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin, today, to elect candidate for the September 19 Edo State gubernatorial election.

Spokesman, Kola Ologbondiyan, who confirmed this to journalists in Abuja, yesterday, said all sensitive materials for the congress have already been dispatched to the state.


The 2,229 delegates consists of the three ad-hoc delegates elected from the 192 wards in the state and statutory delegates, which include commissioners and other political appointees.

Four aspirants, including Governor Godwin Obaseki, who recently defected to the party from All Progressives Congress (APC), a member of the House of Representatives, Omoregie Ogbeide-Ihama, Gideon Ikhine and Kenneth Imasuagbon, obtained the nomination forms.

However, the contest would be between Obaseki and Imasuangbon, as Ikhine and Ogbeide-Ihama have withdrawn.


Meanwhile, the opposition party, yesterday, appointed the immediate chairman of the Edo PDP, Dan Orbih, as chairman of caretaker committee in the South South.

Daily Sun gathered that Orbih’s appointment is part of measures to placate party leaders aggrieved by the entry of the Edo governor into the PDP.

Ologbondiyan, in a statement, yesterday, said the dissolution of the zonal caretaker committee in the South South and the setting up of a new one is in line with the party’s constitution.

However, the controversy trailing the build-up to party primaries has taken another dimension with two political parties fighting over the use of the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium.

If not quickly resolved by respective authorities, the Action Alliance (AA) and the PDP would conduct their primaries at the stadium on the same date.

Already, AA has alerted the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of the development and equally called on the PDP to shift its primary to another date.

But, Special Adviser to Obaseki on Media and Communication Strategy, Crusoe Osagie, said there was never an approval for AA to hold its governorship primary at the stadium.

“The only party I know that has approval to hold its primary at the stadium today is the PDP,” he said.

The AA had initially notified INEC on May 28 about its intention to hold its primary on June 25 to 26 at Ogbemus Hotel and Suit, but later changed to Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in compliance with the state government laws and extant COVID-19 regulations which stipulates that all primaries must hold at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium.

In a letter addressed to INEC chairman, dated June 17, but received on June 18, the party drew the attention of the commission to the change of venue from Ogbemus Hotel and Suit, No.2, Nosa Ekhator Lane, off Upper Sokponba Road Benin, Edo State to the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium.

The letter signed by Adekunle Rufai Omo-Aje and Suleiman Abdulrasheed, national chairman and secretary respectively, cited the state laws as it relates to COVID-19 as reasons for the change of venue.

In another letter addressed to the National Chairman of PDP by its counsel, Oba Maduabuchi, dated June 23, 2020, AA asked the PDP to shift its primary to another date as it will be unhealthy for the two parties to hold their primaries on the same day and venue.

One Michael Adunola and a woman, Atinuke Olawoyin, on Tuesday appeared before an Osun State Magistrates’ Court sitting in Ile-Ife for killing two persons.

They were accused of murdering Michael’s wife, Esther, and 14-month-old daughter, Glory.

PUNCH Metro had reported that two headless bodies suspected to be a mother and her child were found in the Isale Agbara area of Ile-Ife.

The police prosecutor, Sunday Osanyintuyi, said the accused committed the offences on May 23, 2020, around noon in Ile-Ife.

He explained that Michael and Atinuke conspired and murdered the deceased.

He said the accused unlawfully killed Esther and Glory, and severed their heads and hands.

The offences, he stated, contravened sections 242, 319(1) and 516 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Osun State, 2002.

Because of the nature of the case, the plea of the accused was not taken.

Mr Adewale Adegbami and M. I. Babawale announced appearances for the accused.

Magistrate Muhibah Olatunji asked the prosecutor to duplicate the case file and send a copy to the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions in the state for legal advice.

She ordered that the accused be remanded in the Nigerian Correctional Centre, Ilesha, and adjourned the matter till July 28, 2020, for mention.

EKITI State Government has made public the details of a convicted rapist in its ‘Name and Shame’ initiative to curb gender based violence in the state.

In what it tagged ‘ Public Announcement, the state government released the detail of the rape convict as Ajewole Dada Filani who raped a 23-year-old woman.

The state’s Ministry of Justice said the release of convicted rapists was in response to the frequency of reported cases of gender-based violence and sexual abuse in the state.

Filani whose detail was released on the Twitter page of Ekiti State Government is currently serving a life imprisonment.

According to the ministry, Filani before his conviction was a resident of Ikere-Ekiti town in the state.

His name has been added to the Sex Offenders Registry with the State’s Ministry of Justice.

“The Ministry of Justice under the leadership of @AGWaleFapohunda has released a Public Notice on the status of Ajewole Dada Filani, formerly resident in Ikere-Ekiti who was convicted for the rape of a 23-year-old woman,” the Twitter message read.

The state government noted that the ‘name and shame’ policy is part of the proactive measures deployed Kayode Fayemi, Governor of the state to rid state of all forms of violence against women and children.

The Ekiti Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Management Committee, chaired by the First Lady of the state, Bisi fayemi, is said to be on advocacy tour to engage key stakeholders in proactive ways to eliminate GBV, FGM & sexual harassment, and to ensure the security of victims and access to justice in Ekiti.

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), has condemned the Ogun State court ruling against the use of hijab by a school girl.

Director, MURIC, Prof Isiaq Akintola described the judgment by Justice Bamgbose Alabi of the Abeokuta High Court in Ogun State, as judicial namby-pamby.

He however, appealed to Muslims in Yorubaland in particular and Nigeria in general to remain calm. ‘It may be a long road but we will get there one day. Nonetheless, the road must not be painted in red,” he said.

Justice Alabi had earlier ruled “the use of hijab is considered a fundamental human right only for adults”.

This formed the basis of his judgment on Thursday 4th June, 2020 in a case filed by Aishat Abdul-Aleem, an 11-year old Muslim girl who was sent out of school at the Gateway Secondary School, Abeokuta in December 2018.

Akintola said: “We reject this judgment in its totality. What manner of judicial declaration is this? Is the judge telling us that minors have no religion, no fundamental human rights, not even a dot in social statistics?

“Is he telling us that minors do not exist? Why are minors counted during census? Why do we register them at birth? Is the killing of a minor judiciable or not?

“This judgment suffers from desertification of a human face. It has no soul. It is judicial namby-pamby,” he stressed.
Akintola added that the ruling contradicted Section 38 (2) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, which states that “No person attending any place of education shall be required … to take part in …ceremony or observance (which) relates to a religion other than his own or a religion not approved by his parent or guardian.”

According to him, the section has clearly and convincingly recognized the right of minors to enjoy fundamental human rights.

“It placed them under the umbrella of their parents’ or guardians’ inalienable rights,” he added.

He further stated, “By this arbitrary judgment, the judge has elected to discriminate against children on account of age.

“This is contrary to Article 2 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. What will happen if a case of rape of a minor is brought to this court? Can minors ever get redress in this court? Do minors even exist as far as this court is concerned?”

“The judgment in the case of Aishat Abdul-Aleem is a judicial somersault. It is as arbitrary as it is absurd.

“It is equally an unprecedented miscarriage of justice. It cannot hold any water. We charge the litigants to approach an appellate court without delay,” Akintola charged.

He reminded the court that previous judgments in hijab cases had already set precedents. He lamented that it was unfortunate the judge could ignore such precedents.

He therefore noted that the Abeokuta judgment was an extension of the persecution of Muslims in Yoruba land to the judicial terrain.

“The honourable justice has simply returned Ogun State to the Stone Age. By ruling that minors are not covered in fundamental human right to use hijab, the court has denied Muslim parents the opportunity to train their children in the use of hijab from childhood.

“The Abeokuta ruling is another example of the persecution of Muslims in Yoruba land. It is only in Yoruba land that Muslims must approach the courts before they can secure their Allah-given fundamental human rights.

“It is only in Yoruba land that Muslims suffer psychological trauma on account of the persecution and humiliation that their children go through in the schools.” He said.

In yet another raid aimed at stamping out cybercrime in the country, operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Lagos Zonal Office, have arrested suspected internet fraudsters, otherwise known as “yahoo yahoo boys” in Ota, Ogun State, and Victoria Island, Lagos.
The suspected internet fraudsters arrested during the raid in Ota, Ogun State are Adeshina Michael; Ayeni Emiloju; Odenigbo Anthony, Afolabi Gbenga and Oyibogbola David Seun.
Those arrested in Victoria Island, Lagos are Onothebor Edmond; Suuru Blessing; Ifedapo Opeyemi; Samson Samuel, Oguntade Idowu, and Emmanuel Akinyemi.
Others are: Seyi Kazee; Sulaiman Toheed; Oduwale Oluwasesan, Adewoye Oluwasesan and Alex Abiodun.
Their arrest followed intelligence received about their alleged involvement in internet fraud.
Items recovered from the suspects include different brands of cars
allegedly acquired from the proceeds of fraudulent activities.
They would be charged to court as soon as investigations are concluded.

A group, Oodua Action Movement (OAM), has called on President Muhammadu Buhari, to begin the process for an autonomous Yoruba nation as a federating unit in Nigeria.

The group, speaking through its Global Coordinator, Demola Edward, during a press briefing in Abeokuta, at the weekend, said it had observed the continuous degeneration of the country, hence, it demands an “autonomous Yoruba nation.”

OAM, which did not issue an ultimatum to President Buhari, however, declared it reserved the right to actualise an autonomous, self-determining and self-governing nation for the Yoruba region, if the Federal Government failed to grant its request.


Edward, who described OAM as “a group of committed and resilient Yoruba people with over 2,000 members in more than 20 countries,” said the present ‘unitary structure’ of Nigeria had inhibited the country’s growth and prospects, noting the group was ready to work with the Federal Government to a achieve the mission “with peace and due respect to other ethnic units within Nigeria.”

The group further called on other ethnic groups, especially in the northern region, to challenge the status quo and demand the same autonomy for a prosperous Nigeria federation.

President Trump on Tuesday signed an executive order to promote religious freedom overseas.

Trump signed the order at the White House after a visit to the Saint John Paul II National Shrine in Washington, DC.

A senior administration official told The Post the document intends to enforce the Trump administration’s advocacy for religious minorities abroad.

“The president was clear when he called upon ‘the nations of the world to end religious persecution,'” the official said. “This executive order fully integrates the president’s vision — a vigorous defense of International Religious Freedom rights for all — into key aspects of United States foreign policy.”

They added: “Yet again, President Trump is taking a decisive action to keep his promise to people of faith around the world.”

The text of the order instructs the State Department and USAID to “develop a plan to prioritize international religious freedom” and to “budget at least $50 million per fiscal year for programs that advance international religious freedom.”

Trump visited the Knights of Columbus- run shrine to the late pope after a fourth night of large protests in Washington against the killing of George Floyd by Minnesota police.

Wilton Gregory, the Roman Catholic archbishop of Washington, released a statement objecting to Trump’s visit, noting the chaotic clearing of an intersection near the White House on Monday evening before Trump visited the fire-damaged St. John’s Episcopal Church.

“I find it baffling and reprehensible that any Catholic facility would allow itself to be so egregiously misused and manipulated in a fashion that violates our religious principles, which call us to defend the rights of all people even those with whom we might disagree,” Gregory said. “Saint Pope John Paul II was an ardent defender of the rights and dignity of human beings. His legacy bears vivid witness to that truth. He certainly would not condone the use of tear gas and other deterrents to silence, scatter or intimidate them of a photo opportunity in front of a place of worship and peace.”
