An Ogun State High Court sitting in Abeokuta, the state capital has sentenced a 35-year-old man, Adekunle Olalere, to life imprisonment for raping a two-year-old girl. Olalere who resides in the Mowe area of Ogun State was convicted on one count of having sexual intercourse with the two-year-old, a charge which he pleaded not guilty to. However, delivering the judgment on Tuesday, Justice Abiodun Akinyemi held that all evidence presented before the court by the prosecution was tenable, hence the convict was guilty as charged. “Based on the evidence, I find and hold that the convict, had sexual intercourse with the child and is guilty as charged,” he said and thereafter, sentenced Olalere to life Imprisonment. The prosecution counsel, Mrs Oluyemisi Aruleba, had told the court during the trial that the convict committed the offense on March 22, 2017, at No 18, Bashorun street off Unity road, Olowotedo area in Mowe. According to her, the convict forcefully had sexual intercourse with the two-year-old girl. Aruleba said the victim’s mother had been residing with Olalere because she helps the wife to sell foodstuff and other things. “The victim’s mother met her two-year-old daughter crying, and noticed she was not walking properly, she checked her daughter’s private part and noticed it was swollen. “She took the child to the hospital where it was confirmed that there were sperm cells in her private part and it was also revealed that the child had been sexually abused,” she said. The State Of Osun Commander-General of the Harmonized Vigilante Group, Alhaji Ridwan Hussein, has said the Western Nigerian Security Network, codenamed Operation Amotekun, might go into extinction after the expiration of the tenures of incumbent governors in the geopolitical zone. Hussein, who spoke during an exclusive interview with OSUN DEFENDER yesterday, stated that three security outfits had been established in the past, but were short-lived, saying that Amotekun was destined for a short life span. According to Hussein, Amotekun is a political initiative and would end like other political security outfit creations in the past. Hussein, popularly called Yaa Salam, said Amotekun has few years more to spend in Osun, saying that it will cease to exist after Governor Adegboyega Oyetola’s tenure. He said: “Amotekun is a political initiative. We have done it before and we failed woefully. We started something like this in 1959 and it did not end well. What ended Agbekoya group? “When Chief MKO Abiola was incarcerated and later killed, Otunba Durojaye, Ishola Osoba and Fredrick Faseun were the ones who went to Senator Bola Tinubu and said they wanted to form a militia group to curb the attack of the northerners on Yorubas and that was how Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC) came into being. “OPC has been outlawed now. Amotekun will end at expiration of tenure of the South-West Governors. In Osun State, the outfit has three more years to live. I am not saying this because I have anything against the outfit but that is the fact.” Hussein said the harmonized vigilante group is not part of the Amotekun corps against people’s believe. “The corps is said to be made up of the Agbekoya and OPC. You cannot find Agbekoya in Ede or Ondo state while OPC has been outlawed. They don’t have a future. The harmonized Vigilante is not and can never be part of that”, he said. Reacting to Hussein’s statement, Alhaji Lateef Agboola, the Media Consultant to the Director General of the Amotekun Corps, Comrade Amitolu Shitu said the security outfit is an initiative of sincere and committed stakeholders in the south-west region to curb crimes. Agboola described Hussein’s statement as baseless and a reflection of his bitterness on the appointment of head of the Amotekun corps. He said: “Yaa Salam is finding it difficult to appreciate the Amotekun corps because he lost out in the struggle to head the agency. He lobbied to head the agency but he lost. That is why he is making such baseless statement.” |

Ekiti State Government has publicly shamed another convicted sex offender, 66-year-old Bayo Akintewe, by making his details and photograph available to the public. Akintewe, a native of Ondo State formerly resident at Ado Ekiti, convicted by an Ado Ekiti High Court for the rape of a 16-year-old girl and presently serving five years jail term at the Nigerian Correctional Centre, Ado Ekiti, is the sixth person to be named and shamed by the Governor Kayode Fayemi administration. The Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Olawale Fapohunda, in a statement on Friday, said, “The publication is in furtherance of the ‘name and shame sex offenders policy’ of the Ekiti State Government.” Under the name and shame initiative in Ekiti State, names and photographs of convicted rapists are pasted on billboards in prominent public spaces in their communities and their council headquarters and as well uploaded on the website of the Ministry of Justice and other state government platforms in addition to being recorded in the sex offenders register. Four men alleged to have raped a 15-year-old girl and, who also attempted to rape her mother, were on Thursday arraigned before a magistrate court sitting in Akure, Ondo State. The accused are Ojo Damilola, Babalola Bodunde, Jimoh Fatai and Saliu Abdul. The suspects were said to have committed the offence at the Ikare Akoko area of the state on June 28. Police prosecutor, Oniyere Taiwo, expressed surprise that the mother of the victim pleaded on behalf of the accused persons, saying that two of the accused were not at the scene of the crime. Counsel to the four accused persons, J. O Adewale, pleaded with the court that the accused persons should be granted bail. The accused persons, who are facing two-count charge of conspiracy and rape, pleaded not guilty after the charge sheet was read to them. The offence is contrary to and punishable under section 218 of the Criminal Code, Cap 7 Vol.1 Law of Ondo State of Nigeria. The Magistrate, Mrs Adepoju J. O, ordered the remand of the accused persons in police custody. Critics of Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, Iba Gani Adams have been described as political jobbers and enemies of Yoruba race. This was disclosed by the Coordinator of Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC) in Osun State, Prince Adedeji Aladesawe in a statement made available to Vanguard on Thursday in Osogbo. He added that the political featherweights are seeking relevance forgetting that the office of the generalissimo is one of the most sacred institutions in Yorubaland. While reacting to the release credited to Wasiu Agarawu, of the Bola Tinubu Disciples Organisation (BTDO), Aladesawe flayed the criticism, saying the Yoruba generalissimo is always committed to the peace and tranquillity of the southwest. “Truth is always bitter. What Aare Gani Adams said in the interview was misinterpreted by those that are working against the interest of the Yoruba race. They are supposed to learn from history and words of counsel from Aare Gani Adams, but since they are the enemies of our race, they will not listen and I am very sure they will fail in their sinister motives. “Aare Adams is one of the prominent figures in Yorubaland, he is a strong voice and whatever he says shouldn’t be taken with a pinch of salt. So, for whatever reasons, Agarawu and his cohorts should be mindful of how they respond to issues, so as not to create unnecessary tension in the southwest. “Any right-thinking Yoruba person or organisation should know what Aare Gani Adams stood for in terms of his commitment to the cause of our race, so it is sad for anybody or group to desecrate the office of the Aare Onakakanfo. “As the generalissimo of our race, it is the duty and responsibility of Iba Gani Adams, to express his views on relevant issues, especially, at this critical moment of our nation “So, I think it is pertinent for all Yoruba leaders, including traditional institutions and all the stakeholders to support and rally round the Aare the Aareonakakanfo of Yorubaland in his quest for restructuring and true federalism. “Aare justified his position. He was very articulate in his response, and he did justice to all the issues raised in the interview, which bordered on the future of our race. He is in the best position to lead the crusade for restructuring, true federalism and egalitarian society. “Therefore, those trying to criticise him and desecrate the office of the Aare Onakakanfo of Yorubaland will surely regret it. There is of late an upsurge in ritual killings and people involved tell us there are demons that bring money after doing ritual. As a traditionalist, what is your perspective? Some people say there are no such demons. There is one of my white friends who asked me to go in-depth into what is called money ritual, to know if it is Yoruba concept of belief. People used to believe that we have supernatural power to produce money, that African science can do that. But what African science told us is that if you are a businessman, you can use awure. Awure is lucky charm that helps you to have good sales in your business. We also have oshole, which has its dos and don’ts but has nothing to do with blood. Oshole is a kind of ritual that can help people that use it to have money; it must be done at age 40 and above 70 before you use another one. Nowadays, haaa!! Ritual killing is too much, they cut the victim’s head, private part and everything. I read one paper where one man said “I regret killing my girlfriend”. Some ritualists even eat human heart. I want to ask people that use human parts to make money whether they actually get rich. The use of human and body parts purportedly to make money is not Yoruba culture, it is a culture that was imported from Nupe, Ghana and other parts of Africa. It has been incorporated to our own culture but it is alien to us. So why do people get involved in ritual killing? I may not know why people get involved in ritual killing because it is not in our culture. Ritual, if you did not use pig, goat, I don’t know anything about it. How do we stop ritual killing over the belief that there are demons that bring money? Won ni e ma da won lekun (You don’t have to caution them). Anyone that is caught should be arrested and put in jail or even killed, that should serve as a lesson to others. We may preach or appeal but if they are made to face the wrath of the law, it would deter others. Sometimes albinos, hunchback, bald headed people are targeted for ritual killings. Why? We discussed that long time ago. It is true that albinos, hunchbacks, dwarfs are usually targeted is because people think hunchbacks can produce money. One of my books, the Adventures of Obatalas discusses it. Hunchbacks, dwarfs and albinos are servants of Obatala. Obatala is a god-king and he had power that Eledumare (God) gave him which he used to sanction anything that he wanted. There was one hunchback that Obatala used to send on errand from Ironje Ile to Ironje Oko, and there was also one man named Ojugbe. Ojugbe was a kind and generous man. They did divination for him that one particular year he was going to be successful but that he needed to be more generous. So, each time the hunchback passed through his area, he will give him food and other things. The hunchback told his master, Obatala, that there was this particular man that whenever he (hunchback) passed his area, he was always generous to him. Hence Obatala decided to bless Ojugbe. Obatala used his power to command the hunchback to open, so he poured different kinds of beads, cowries and many other precious things into his back and closed it. He then instructed the hunchback to tell Ojugbe to rub his back, it will open and all the goodies would be his. Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC) has frowned at what it called verbal attack on Aare Gani Adams by suspected cronies of Asiwaju Ahmed Tinubu. In a recent interview, Adams had knocked the former Lagos governor over his lack of interest in restructuring of Nigeria, the Oodua Republic project as well as his purported ambition for presidency. For his views, he received a bashing from the President of OPC New Era, Rasak Arogundade. In his reaction, OPC Secretary in Somolu Local Government Area, Adedayo Adesoye, dismissed Arogundade’s position as a ploy by the APC leader to distract the public from relevant issues. “Tinubu should speak up on the issue raised in the interview. I think he should make his position known to the public rather than sending his proxies to attack Adams and also using it as a ploy to distract the people from the pertinent issues. “Yorubas are waiting, Nigerians are waiting.
