Profgordons:
Don’t make a simple situation look complex and if I was the visa officer I would have denied you too because the submission was clumsy. Here are my reasons:
1. Inability to submit a legible statement, compression will make it blurred, deterring the officer from making an informed decision. Solution is to use mybankstatement
2. If you have that sufficient cash as indicated in the account statement, nothing should hinder you from paying at least one year school fees and a GIC. To address this, pay one year fees then let your spouse Open a GIC with the student’s details but fund it on his/her behalf using a wire transfer and should show the transaction trail though.

The visa will be granted most likely if addressed in this manner.
Thank you.

I am going to contact the school this AM and figure out the payment of his school fees ASAP. I am hoping it's refundable.

About GIC, his sister here in Canada has CIBC, is that whom she needs to contact? Or are there known Canadian banks that do this effortlessly and easy?
Also, his Dad who is sponsoring has a Naira account at Zenith, can he do this wire transfer?

Thanks.

ATTAHDYE:
Hello

Sorry about this outcome

1. Go to your bank and request for mybankstatement ticket.

Your 50 something pages bank statement will come out as 1-page, submitting bank statement that is not legible is as good as not submitting at all.

This has been discussed over and over on this forum.

2. Pay the entire tuition fee for the first year of his program.

4. Open a GIC of atleast CAD 20,895 for him.

All the best.
Thank you.

1. I have requested for this and will get it tomorrow. Hope this one page MyBankStatement Ticket is verifiable in Canada?

2. If we pay the fees, is it refundable if he doesn't get the visa?

3. How can I register for GIC. What's the best way. Can I tell him to send me the money in Canada and I fund the GIC here or must they show a direct trail from Naija account to GIC Bank?

I am asking because I presume the bank transfer from Zenith to a GIC would take time and we quickly want to reapply for January start.

Thanks and appreciate your responses.

yes, it's 500k CAD, That's why they are curious.

kiiiingggggg99:
Did the visa officer just said 500k cad or they meant 50k cad cause I don’t understand what they mean by 500k cad. Why should it be 500k

To be honest, no one knows when the old days of 450–470 draws will return. Canadians aren’t happy about how easy it is for people to come into Canada, and the government isn’t investing in real job-creating opportunities. Instead, they’re gaslighting everyone.

Imagine the government giving Honda $15 billion Canadian dollars, only for them to shut down their factory two years later! The government loves green projects, but green projects don’t move the economy.

That’s a discussion for another day https://apnews.com/article/canada-honda-ev-project-delayed-b7c05f857be61263c3227afee04bf37a

The only advice for anyone is to target every possible draw they might qualify for and try to improve their chances. I know a lot of people don’t like to hear this, but studying is still the best way to come to Canada—though you have to be strategic about it.

Learn French, or target programs like the OINP Masters Graduate Stream, the BC Provincial Nominee Program (BC PNP), or the NLPNP International Graduate Category.

Every province has a program for international students who study in Canada. You can find more details here: https://www.canadim.com/immigrate/provincial-nominee-program/

But remember things can change at anytime and sadly accountant isn't part of the in demand job making it difficult to get ITA from outside canada

But you have to be strategic from day one:

✅ Know the province you’re targeting.
✅ Know the in-demand programs in that province.
✅ Understand what it takes to qualify—before you start applying to any school.

Don’t be like Badadvisor, choosing any program at any school without planning for the long run.

PR (Permanent Residence) is not guaranteed, but you have to select your best option to maximize your chances of success.
Please need advice. My 16 year old BIL was denied a study permit twice on financial grounds meanwhile his Dad in Nigeria is very financially capable with good account balances and lots of documents provided.

First he applied for September intake, and they denied on finances as they weren't sure he had access to the money. It was a corporate account. (we submitted board resolution letters, CAC, shares showing major shareholder etc).
We deferred till JAN, Now they denied him and say the bank statements isn't legible. His bank statement was 6 months, very lengthy (52 pages) and it was a hurdle compressing it. Did it severally, quality was reduced but still legible. I even sent the bank statements separately via webforms. (I hear now, that's a gamble).

Please I need advice so I can reapply ASAP this week as it's quite unfair as the funds is truly available in the Zenith account as his Dad is a a well established Engineer and contractor.
1. Is there a way for Zenith bank to provide additional details, we can send for them to verify this online.
2. He had admission to Bow valley college. Should we offer to pay a session of fees? Will that help?
3. What can we do please? Any advice everyone?
4. Should we open a bank account for him in Canada and use? Is that possible?

I Got PPR here in 2017...God bless Nairaland mehn.

Btw, quick advice for the doctors and health professionals among us, hope yall know of the Healthcare category based draws? It's your best show so take advantage.

Although the score was ridiculously 500 from yesterday's draw, I hope it drops in the future.

IRCC are not evil people hahah I know that for sure

I personally don’t see it as a big deal if you’ve done everything else right.

Sometimes, as humans, we overthink and overreact to certain things. Anyone can correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t think it’s a big deal.
yeah, maybe I am overthinking it like you said....lol..I will just wait and see what happens.

Meanwhile, I read your long piece above about Bill C-2 and your advise for people aiming for category-based draws via PR. i totally agree, I have been advocating for my guys in the health sector in naija to come over via that means and some got ITAs in the early CB draws.

That being said, do you think the usual pre-COVID, bi-weekly CRA draws of 450 - 470 we once enjoyed will ever come back? I miss those days, mehn..now the CRA scores are ridiculously high. In fact, they hardly even do those direct draws self, and when they do, it's as high as 500.
I have a telegram bot for the draws and monitoring it because I have got my last born sibling in the pool but his score is very low and I wonder if he would ever get ITA.

He is in Naija, an accountant, but working in a family-run, travel agent biz. I appreciate your honest and realistic insights and wonder if you have any suggestions, advice, or information on what I can do to bring him to Canada. My other sibling is here because he came via category based draw but nah, this my lastborn own dey worry me!! God bless you btw.

Student application for my bro-in-law was submitted yesterday.

However, today I noticed that the signature his Dad signed in his letter of sponsorship, and the one on his international passport are different. I asked and he said that the passport own has always been the one on his PP and so he stuck to it even during renewals, but it's his actual signature that he signed in the sponsorship letter.

I just tire. Will this result in automatic rejection or will they ignore?

Should we do anything proactively now like informing IRCC ? (i wonder if that may bring red flags) or ignore?

Sorry for the late reply. The weather was good this weekend, so I was outside all weekend.

Yes, it would be good for the company to write the letter, but it would also be important to state that the two other minor shareholders are aware that the company—where his dad is a major shareholder—is sponsoring the person.

Look at it this way: you’re trying to clear any doubt that IRCC might have about the ownership of the company, the money that will be spent for sponsorship, and the availability of that money when the person needs it to come to Canada.

If possible, make sure that the acceptance fee to secure admission was paid from that company account if possible and use it as a document during Visa application. This would show intent and capacity to make payments from that account.

People like "Badadvisor" who claimed to have all the sponsorship money sometimes come to Canada and then realize they lied on their application. They start blaming the government, even though they told the government beforehand that they could afford everything as an international student.

You’re doing everything in your power to convince IRCC that you have the money—and that the money is available in an account fully controlled by your sponsor and ready for you at any time.
Thanks for your guidance so far.

Okay, I’ll do my best to give you the most helpful response based on my knowledge and experience.

(1) First of all, don’t rush him. Canada is not always the easiest environment for young people—especially teenagers—as they can be exposed to drugs and other risky lifestyles. Yes, it can be that bad in certain situations.

Let’s assume he’ll be 16 by August. The University of Calgary accepts students from age 16 and above, which in my opinion is a better option than starting at a college. After college, at 18 or 19, he’ll likely be job hunting and may face frustration if he can’t secure one easily.

If he goes to college at 16, he’ll still need to do a BSc eventually. So why not go straight to university and start the BSc right away? Just thinking out loud here.

Canada’s job market is changing and becoming more competitive. I personally have a Master’s degree in Canada along with several Cloud Computing certifications, and I know how difficult it was for me to land a mid-level role.

If he finishes his BSc at 21, he can potentially get a 3-year Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP). Before turning 24, he’ll likely know how to secure his Permanent Residency (PR), and both his age and experience will work in his favor.

In summary, sending him young—if his father can afford it—isn’t a bad idea. IRCC tends to favor younger students who clearly come for educational purposes, as opposed to older applicants (25–32) trying to get into college.

(2) The minimum amount needed in the bank statement is subjective, but the general rule is:

* One year’s tuition (with ideally you have already paid 1/3 paid as a deposit to accept the offer)
* Plus \$20,000 for living expenses.
And a means on this case a business that can take care of the children school fees overtime.

The average college fee for international student a year is about $20,000 to $30,000 so if you are looking for actual amount that's about $50,000 CAD minimum as POF I always say make it $60,000 CAD.

It’s subjective because you mentioned he has a sister in Canada. That makes the boy his father’s dependent, and the father must prove he can support him without affecting his sister’s wellbeing or support.

(3) Do not send the money to the daughter. Let the father be the official sponsor. He should submit all relevant documentation about his business and subcontract work to prove he is financially capable and that his business is in good standing.

(4)Do not transfer money from the business account to a personal account just for Proof of Funds (POF). The key is to show that the funds are readily available to support the boy.

The father just needs to prove that he owns the business account and has full access to the money in it. If there are personal savings too, then use both accounts—but don’t move money around for the purpose of POF.

(5) Yes, a Statement of Purpose/Intent is required. I don’t currently have a template, but people here can assist. The letter should clearly explain why you’re sending a 16-year-old to university or college, considering the average Canadian student starts at 18.

(6) I’m hearing about an “affidavit of return” for the first time, but if there’s a strong family business, that’s already a valid home tie. However, let’s be honest—IRCC often expects young students like this to stay after graduation. You’ll still need to explain in the documents that he intends to return home after his studies.

That said, IRCC is less concerned about a 16-year-old finishing school by 20 or 21 than a 26-year-old finishing by 28 and returning to Nigeria.

I’m heading to work now—reply if you need any clarifications. I’m typing this quickly while on the GO Train.
Sponsor 1 Documents (Company)
1. Letter of Sponsorship
2. Article of association and memorandum
3. CAC CERTIFICATE
4. Particulars of directors in the company
5. Tax Clearance Certificate
6. Company bank statements for the past six (6) months.
7. Board Resolution Letter stating that they are fully aware of this sponsorship and approve it.
8. Affidavit of Support
9. Business invoices

God bless you for your previous reply. it was insightful and I helped him write a SOP.

I am about to submit the application and have everything above except number 2 and 7 on the list.
His Dad has written a personal letter of sponsorship as he owns the company and is a major shareholder. There are however other shareholders (wife - major as well) and 2 others (minor shares). Does the company need to write a letter of sponsorship as well? Or is this where number 7 would be helpful to cover?

BTW are the particualrs of the directors compulsory. IF yes, dow e mean International passports strictly or any ID will do? Thanks.

@ALL Please share your opinions as well, I would be glad to ehar from everyone for advice....

Please what do i take as a document to the IOM centre appointment once I am able to book a date. I ask cos I found this somewhere:

"PLAN YOUR MEDICAL EXAM
If you are still not sure if you need a medical exam, check with a visa office near you.
If you do need a medical exam, your visa office will give you instructions and a form with your file number before you see a panel physician"

Also, do I pay for IOM online during appointment booking or at the office? Whats the usual cost? Thanks.

Please I am almost fone with fine tuning my junior brother in law's application and have a few more questions.

* How do I register with IOM for his medicals. Does he just show up at their office? Where is the office (Ikeja one?) and what documents should he take there?
* Also, Is there a way he can submit the application without medicals at the beginning. I wonder why the application is asking it for him from the beginning but for some others here, I can see it was requested as the application progressed. Did I select something wrong at filling the forms?
* How do I process his Police character certificate? I hear it's different now and no more middle man. Is this true? What's the website and how long does it take?

Greetings my people, old time Nairalander here based in CA.

I just thought it wise to come seek the counsel of experienced members here as student visa applications is not my forte as compared to PR and TRV visa applications.

Basically, my 15 year old brother in law who is currently in secondary school in Nigeria and finishing this August, just got admission to study Software Development as a 2 year Diploma course in Bows Valley College Calgary with proposed start date in September. We applied to 3 schools including Uni of Calgary who are yet to give a final verdict.

He has a five year visiting visa and was here in CA last year for holidays. Bow valley has sent a document to enable him apply for his study visa. I however know that study visas from Nigeria now is tough hence my enquires/questions below. Please feel free to engage or provide any valuable advice/suggestions and answers.

1. Is the fact that he is applying for Diploma from secondary school okay? Is it a regular and popular study route or will it throw red flags. Otherwise, over here Diploma is quite popular.

2. His Dad (My Father in law) would be sponsoring him for his education in Canada. WHat is the minimum amount that should be in the bank statement.

3. He initially wanted to send the fees to his daughter in Canada so she would be the one to sponsor, but I temporarily advised against it. I feel if the appliocant shows too much ties to his sister or Canada, it may be a red flag. I feel his Dad should be his sponsor. Abi how ona see am? And btw, FIL is a Business General contractor and I worry about what documents he needs to show? (Is Cert of incorporation, Tax cert necessary or should he keep it simple)?

4. Can FIL use his personal bank statement as proof of sponsorship? Or does it have to be his business account where the money is coming from?

5. If I remember correctly, Statement of purpose/intent are usually required during study permit applications. Is this still a cardinal part of the application. Does any one have a draft / example we can read and use as a guide only.

6. I saw someone post that he added an affidavit of return. Please what is this document? Also, how can a 16 year old boy show ties to Nigeria and demonstrate that he would return. Any suggestions?

Thanks for your anticipated response, Looking forward to them.
CC: @amnotapervert I can see you are in Canada as well and thought to also seek you experienced opinion on this post above. I am trying to tidy an application for my brother in law who is a minor. My wife and I are citizens already and want to make sure we put up a solid application which shows intent of him going back to Nigeria.

Pls can you look at our questions above and share ur opinions.

Also, a placeholder for documents shows for medicals already, can i submit the application without medicals?
Finally, someone here advised his sponsor (his dad) opens an account for him? Is this necessary since he is a minor?

Good day I am doing my juniour brother's application and yet to submit. I am wondering why it's showing a spaceholder for me to upload his medicals from the beginning. Is that the same situation with you? Did u upload a blank sheet in the beginning?

Thanks Bobomaigida for responding.

Yeah, I will discuss with FIL to be sponsor. Just to be clear, how will the living expenses thingy work out since he doesn't have a bank account in Canada yet. He is barely sixteen.

And yes the course is PGWP eligible.

BTw, I started the study permit application yesterday, just to be clear on what the process entails, and because he is a minor, I have chosen his sister in Canada to be custodian. Has anyone here applied for a minor before?

Finally, I noticed he wouldn't need biometrics as he did it last year but seems he will now require medicals. I remember they stopped upfront medicals for PR applications like a year+ back. How does this work for study permits? Do we upload blank white papers and then later submit medicals via webform or do we arrange for medicals before we can submit the SP application? Thanks.
