To produce a heavy bunch, plantain always need some extra nutrients.. This can be applied in the form either of manure or fertilizer example or manure mulch,,ash from wood fires..while fertilizer are N.P.K 15:15:15, urea fertilizer but NPK is the best for plantain. This because Potassium improve the rate of heavy of the bunch.

Incase your land it has been allow to fallow for long times, I will advise you not to apply fertilizer on such land..But in case some crops has already planted on it I mean the land, try to apply manure when you are digging the land and pour manure inside the hole before you put your sucker inside whole and cover it will earth.

Yes, you can still plant your plantain this year. You can plant your plantain round the year even during dry season you can still plant it.

LAND OR FIELD PREPARATION

Fields are prepared with minimum disturbance to the soil (no tillage farming). Don’t use tractor to plough the field. In consequence, manual clearing should be preferred to mechanical deforestation because bulldozers always remove topsoil with the important organic matter and compact their main soil. When an old natural fallow is cleared, the debris from the forest should be burned if plantain cultivation is planned for 1 or 2 cycles only.
If perennial cultivation is being considered, planting should be done through the mulch. Young fallow of about 3 to 5 years or improved legume fallows should be simply slashed and left without being burned. Trees must be cut but the stumps are left without being removed and the trees should be left to grow again. They can be pruned only when they start to obstruct filed activities or shade the plantains from direct sunlight.
In case of storm you can leave some trees at strategies location of farm to prevent wind on falling of plantain during heavy storm. You can also leave surround unclear to prevent cows/herdsmen gain entrance into your farm.

Quality of a good land for plantain farming
1. The site should be easily accessible especially if you are planning large scale farming.

Spacing or dimension use in planting of plantain

Measurement of land is quite different from one location to the other. in south west Nigeria a plot is measure at rate of 120ft×60ft while in south south is measure 100ftx50ft and many more.

If you are planting your plantain at 8ftx6ft at south west you will need 150 suckers on a plot of land both in south-south you will need 100suckers.
6 plots equivalent to 1 acre, in south west you need 900 suckers while 600 suckers will be require in south - south.

if you choose to use more space than this you will need less plantain suckers, if you choose to use less that this you will need more suckers.

You can get more extra suckers in case your land is rack or some of them not germinate.

Get mean right, I don't say it will die, but if you plant any seeds, 95% will survive while 5% may survive or none.

MULCHING

Mulching means to cover the soil between plants with a layer of material. It keeps roots and bulbs cool in summer and warm in winter. Don’t remove crop residue …leave it on the land.

Ordinary veld grass also makes a very goods mulch, as do leaves, soft cuttings, seaweeds, straw, tree bark and manure. All these mulches can be dug into the soil when the season is over. The material must be fairly well decomposed before it is dug in, however. Material that has not decayed fully will use some of the precious in the soil.

Mulching prevents water from evaporating. Less watering is therefore needed for the growth of your plantain. It protects the soil from wind, rain and sun, and suppresses weed growth by blocking out sunlight.

Weed control,
Plantain should always be weed free. Weed control starts during field preparation. Weeds are initially controlled about every 6-8 weeks, but when the plantain canopy closes about 5-6 months after planting weed infestation declines due to shading. Any superficial root system should be considered a weed and they should be eliminated. Grass or herbs are most pernicious weeds because they derive their nutrients from the same source with plantains. Trees seedling are not considered to be weeds.
Weed can be controlled through mulching, chemically, or manually.
Mulching is the most effective Means, because a mulching layer can prevent weed growth.
Chemical control is expensive and in some circumstances also dangerous.

Climatic condition requirement for growth of Plantain

Plantain like other crops require a hot and humid environment. Ideally, the average air temperature should be about 30c and rainfall at lease 100mm per month.
Rainfall should be well distributed through the year and dry seasons should be as short as possible like two to three months. In case you are you are experience longer period than this, the weather will affect the crop and this will lead into falling of the crop prematurely or stunting growth of the crop.

Irrigation is not suitable nor economically worthwhile if you are farming on less than acre of farm land, but may become necessary when larger fields are cultivated in area with a long dry season.

Fertilizer application
In case you notice any stunting growth in your plantain or low yield and you notice any change in colour of your plantain leave, you need to apply fertilizer.
The plantain crop always benefits from the use of fertilizer. The yield from plants can be up to 10 times higher than that from unfertilized plants. Bush fallow

If a farm land have been used for continuous cultivation for long period of time, the nutrient will be loss and this will lead to unproductive of the soil. In order to allow the land to be productive for better yield, farmer should apply bush fallowing system of farming.

When left uncultivated for several years, the loss fertility will be restored, and all nutrient will be available in appropriate proportion and this will improved yield from the farm land. This type of farm land is call virgin land.

To restored fertility the organic matter in the soil should be raised as high as possible during the fallow period by planting an improved fallow, otherwise the fallow crops consist of trees which were cut down at planting time and are grow back which was growing between plantain rows as mulch. In addition to restoring fertility, the fallow crops should by itself completely eliminate all kind of weeds especially grasses.

You can practice this method when you notice that there is decline in your yield as a result of poor soil nutrients.

Disadvantage of this method is that it practise where there large quantity of land. Because you need to move from one farm land to another.

Land procurement strategy
As you know you need to procure your land on loamy soil, for a lay man to identify loamy soil. You can do that by sight or by holding the soil and feel the texture. If you sight white or black soil, this is loamy soil and good for plantain farming. The next is to look for swamp and upland. If you have this type of land you will be visiting market from time to time, hope you know mean of that. For a farmer to visit farm that mean he is smile to the bank.
If you procure land on swamp land, you should not plant on it during rainy season, this because all your suckers will rotten on the soil but if you plant during dry season water level will be dry by them and it will develop faster.
Another challenge on planting on swamp land is that during the raining season the swamp area will be flood and plantain doesn’t like flooding environment, due to this the whole crop will stop growing or have stunting growth. I am very sure you will not like the farm when you visit it.
Doesn’t worry as soon as dry season come up and level of water start to reduce, the next you observe it that your crop will start growing. By that time other farmers’ crops will be dry off. I mean most of farm on upland will be dry off.
Then you start harvest during the time there is scarcity of plantain in the market. Then you make good money.

You need a land you can either buy a land or lease one. Depend on your financial capacity, you can decide on buying or lease. If you decide on lease one agrees for not less than four years or more. I cannot assume the cost of buying land or lease a land. If you can get land inside deep forest or a land that has been cultivated for very long time will be added advantage for you.

Clearing of land

To clear one acre of land by manual method, you should prepare for N15K TO N20K, depending on area. Tell the laborer to burn it for you or they should sweep it, if you are doing the clearing during raining season to enable you to plant properly.
