Yes you can take it to market around you. In case your farm is within Lagos, Ogun, Ondo or Edo state you can bring it down to Lagos. Majority of people concentrate on Mile 12, Mushin markets. Why not try Lagos inner market like Ile-epo market along iyana-ipaja Abule -Egba axils. You can also try oke-Afa market. You can sell your goods at a good prices at this inner market. This is because majority of vehicle that bring farm produce to Lagos are try to avoid Lagos enforcement agencies like Lastma, V.I.S that is reason why they don't like to go inner part of Lagos to deliver their goods. They like discharge their goods at Ketu, Mile 12 and co. If you can go extra mile to deliver your goods at inner Lagos market, you make more money than those market closer to Lagos bothers.

Similarly, you are also bring the foods closer to consumer. All this will enhance you more income. These are the things middle me does, and this make them make more money than farmers. You too can try this same, you will definitely see charges.

You said you have 10 dozen of plantain to harvest, that is not a joke try to bring it down to major market closer to you. In case you decide to sell for middle men, you must have experience on how to buy and sell plantain before you can do that unless, they will cheat you.

For your information I do plant by December /January. If you plant during raining season does that mean some will not die. If you plant during during dry some will die too, while majority will survive.

Since 2010 I don't do any other job than farming only plantain. It was of recent I converted some of my farm that can't support plantain into cassava farm. It doesn't mean anything, you can go ahead. Lol. You said April or May when did you want to plant your corn. You remember that suckers still consist of water, the water on sucker it enough for it grow till March when rain will improve than this period.

If you plant by April or May, when did you want to harvest, the harvest will be during coming dry season, if your farm is at up land, definitely your plantain fruit will be small because by time it need water, there will not be water available unless you can irrigate your farm. And you know how costly to irrigate an acre now.

Therefore I will advise you to start planting now and if you intend to add corn, so so by 2nd week of March.

Upon coming planting season

Everything has time in agriculture, there is time land or field preparation, there is time for planting , there is plant for wedding and there is time for harvesting...

The best planting period for Plantain plantation is by end of dry season toward beginning of rainfall. In case your farm consist of beg trees there is need for you to fell it, you shd be start clearing from January....this is because the trees will properly dry before u set it on fire for proper burning.

In case there is no big trees on your farm you can clear it by February or at any convince time. You may decide to set it on fire or you pack it aside. It very cheap and effective if you set it on fire, those ashes will serve as manure to the crops too.

But if you decide to pack it aside, you will nee to pay extra money for labourer to do that for you. While not wait for a week or two weeks after clearing for you set it on fire.

I beg you forget about those theory on paper where you will be advised not to burn it because it will affect the surface nutrients. In fact from my own practical finding i discovered that crops plant under high concentration of Ashe grow faster than just ordinary soil.

The best place to get good soil for cultivation of Plantain and Cocoa at Ogun state . Note, the best soil for cultivation of plantain is the best soil for cultivation of cocoa.

Ijebu axis of Ogun state is the best soil for cultivation of plantain and Cocoa plantation. If you move around ijebu Igbo toward osun river side. Ogbere and ijebu Ife side....they have a very good soil for cultivation of these crops

Hello sir, i don't see your comments earlier, if you are to plant cocoa on your farm. Plantain is best crops farmer use to nurture Cocoa and when Cocoa grow to mature, plantain will be totally destroy.
This led to one of youruba adage said ' ogede to wo cocoa ye, ko to do igi buruku"
Meaning Plantain nurture Cocoa it now a bastard tree. ( Sorry for my interpretation if not comprehensive enough to your standards..lol������)

As you know life spam of Cocoa is longer than plantain.. Cocoa can stand for 100 years. If you intend to mix it with cocoa, your planting distance will be different from ordinary Plantain plantation..... 10×10 ft is ok as Planting dimensions.

To determine total number of Suckers required, divide the dimensions by 10ft and multiply the out put, that will be total number of Suckers you will need to plant on your farm.

First where is your farm located? This is because the measurements dimensions is variable from one region to another. In South West, a plot is measure 60ftx120ft while in South South or South East a plot is measure 50ftx100ft.

Due to this measure different there will be deferent in total numbers of suckers required by each. It can't be the same quantity required in South West with the one in South South.....
As will know 6 plots equivalent to 1 acre of land...

Therefore, in South West you will need 800 due to 8ftx8ft but if you choose 6ft x 6ft you will need 900 to 1000 suckers.

While in Southern Nigeria you will need 600 per acre with planting distance of 8×8ft...

Why did I need to venture into farming this year. I think you need to noticed that the price of food items is on higher side this year. Due to this you too have to take advantage of price because there is no hope that the price will come down soon. Clearing during the dry season is good compare with raining season. Therefore take the advantage of dry season around to start clearing. By February you can start planting by late February, there will rain once and by March rain will start gradually.

How To Clear Weed on Dry Season

If you are Plantain farmer, I will advise you not to clear weed on your farm during dry season. You said why? I know you will be surprised to hear this but, this is best practices to save live of your crop and to protect your crops and soil from higher intensity of sunshine.

During dry season you will notice those weed too will suffer the effect of dry season, so of them will die while majority will look stunning.

If you go ahead and clear it, within that period there won't be any segnificant growth in your crops, also some of your crops may die too. This is waste of money and waste of energy.

But if you retain the weeds, it will protect the soil from high intensity of the sun. Immediately rain start falling make sure you clear the weeds and start observe the growth of your crops. And start observing the growth, within weeks you will start see change. But if you choose to wet your farm or you irrigate its. You are strongly advise to clear the weeds. This because when you wetting it the temperature of the soil will be dropping and can't compare it with un-wet soil.

Dry season it just 3 months. Within short period of time it over.

But if you cultivate tuber crops or you mixed it with your Plantain. You will need to clear it because if you don't do that you are creating avenue for rodents to deal with your tuber.

Rodents don't damage crops that free from weeds because they won't be free when they are doing their damages. They will be think farmers are seen them which is very dangerous for them.

But if it bushy they will be protected by weeds and start there damages to your tubers

6 months after your first harvest, you will come back and harvest again and this is how it will repeat itself and and again untill nutrients of the soil wick.

Look at pictures of plantain below, in few months parent plantain will be ready for harvest and if you look beside it you will see another sucker marked in circular form, that is sucker. The Sucker will ready for harvest in 6 months after harvest the parent have been harvest. If you look at the hight of the sucker presently you can sense what am try to figure out.

All you need to do is to make sure that the farm is free from weed from time to time..
Also be ensure that suckers are not more than two at a go.

The first question to come to your mind is who are my customer...I do Identify my customers? If you don't identify your customers you will not know the best channel to direct your Plantain Flour too. I am very sure if you have very good customer care with them, they will be your loyal customers.

Don't be afraid of meeting them, majorities of laboratories centre too has affiliated link with one hospital or more. That is why doctors will ask you to go to certain Laboratory for your test. If you go to another which not recommend for you he or she will not accept your test results. There is no big deal on this, they are work hand on hand. There will be returning for doctor at end of d day.

Yes, it is advisable to plant now. If you notice that we have poor rainfall this year, there will be improvement by next year.
If you plant now, the level of rainfall now will improve the growth, during dry season, the crops will be strong enough to withstand it. The rainfall will be early by next year. By next year May/June your crops will be ready for harvest . And that scarcity period for sales of Plantain.

I have series of calls from different quarters that due to present rainfall has improved the growth of there crops.

Some of there crops that grow stunting before has improved drastically...

Water is major challenge we encountered on farming, as your crop growing, weed will be also growing along with it...At this stage you may use herbicide to control it...But in case your crops are still young, I will advise you not to use herbicide...make uses of manual means to clear it....if your crop has grow above your chess you can use herbicide. Various types of of herbicide like force up and many more.....

If rain is threatening please don't use herbicide or any chemical by then, because it will wash away all the chemical away and you will not see any effect of the chemical at all.
