The Best Climatic Condition For Plantain Plantation

plantain required a hot and humid environ, ideally the average air temperature should be above 30°c and rainfall at lease 100mm per month. Rainfall should be well distributed throughout the year and dry season should be short as possible. I will advise irrigation if you are planning for commercial purpose. in case you are subsidence Farmer you can plant around river bank or swamp area.

Plantain doesn't doing well on water logging area. if there is too much deposit of water the water can kill your plantain. Therefore the land you intend to you for cultivation of plantain should be well selected, don't think because plantain is water loving crop and you should plant your crop inside water deposit area.
if rainfall is well distribute round the year, Plantain does well on upland rather than swamp area.

Don't waste your money to buy herbicide during dry season, this is because grass or weeds are already dry off. Only few are yet to dry off. I will advise you to clear the farm with help of cutlass....if need be you can set it on fire. Pls don't set your already set up plantation on fire.

And be cautious not to allow the fire to reach another person farm. Make sure you wait till the fire off completely before you leave your farm.

How to Procure farm land

someone called me from Ajah I Lagos the he is interested in Plantain plantation and Land is major challenge that he can't afford the cost of buying land in Ajah and environment for cultivation of Plantain. what i told his is to move away from that are and go to near by village or neighboring state and talk to village cheif ( Baale) he should tell them he is intention that he need some piece of land for lease or outright sales. i am very sure he will be allocated. if you are reside in a city, you hardly got a land suitable for farm in a city you need to go extra mile away from city to search for land.

cost of renting farm land withing Ogun state and Oyo state is between 10,000 to 15,000 naira per acre. You will need to buy Dry Gin (baba apari) a bottle is ok for them.

in term of workers, they too can be of help or you hire by yourself.

Effect of Bulldozer On Your crop....

in case you intend to cultivate on large hectares of land and you are planning to make use of Bulldozer to clear the land for you in other to make work easier and faster. Yes it will make work easier and faster for you but agronomically it is not advisable. This is because Bulldozer will clear all the top soil which contains large amount of nutrients for the growth of your crops to one side of the farm and this will have negative effect on your crops.

if you planted Plantain on land cleared with bulldozer, the plant will growth to some certain stage and stop growing at certain stage. it will not grow to the stage that it will produce fruit for you.

if you plant on area where the debris were dropped and you plant plantain on it, it will grow faster on that side where you design for planting will not produce fruit for you.
I will advise you not make use of Bulldozer to clear the land. You can make use of manual mean or old school method to clear the land.

You can plant at any month in a year it depend on soil....if you are planting on swamp land you can start planting by August brake ...if it is upland you can plant by Feb.

Agronomically you start by ending of dry season and beging of rain season....

if you clear your land during dry season or December and set I on fire by February and you plant it by February. By February there will be rain once or twice this is enough for growing of sucker. remember sucker also have some little quantity of water to enable it grow before rain will start fully by March /April

Dry Season Farming
in case you visited your farm recently and you are not impressed with growth of your crops, don't be disturbed this is how it will be during this this period . Dry season is just a few months I am very sure there will be rain once or twice by February and by March there will be improvement in term of rainfall.

But in case you have financial muscle to irrigate your farm I will advise you to go ahead and do it. Objective of irrigation is to bring water into your crops either drop irrigation or rain-gun. Solution to Micro-nutrient deficiency on plantain crops

I have discussed about deficiency of micronutrients on plantain crops and how to identify them.

To correct this deficiency, all you need to do is to apply Folia fertilizer on your plantain leaves..

See below pictures, these are pictures of folia fertilizer bottles.

How to apply folia fertilizer,
You need to have sprayer tanks, either 16-20ltrs capacity.
Then you need a clean water and add 150ml to 20ltrs of water
Then start spraying on leave and fruit of your plantain. This should be done early in the morning or late in evening.
This can be repeated every 3 months.

Boron Deficiency

Boron deficiency first affects the cell walls or reproductive organs. However, with severe boron deficiency, stunted growth and death of growth tissue can be found.

Zinc (Zn)
Zn deficiency
zinc is one of micronutrients present in soil, the amount of zn find in soil is sometimes so small that they are barely detectable but without them, plantain will fail to thrive.

important of Zinc is to help plantain to produce chlorophyll. If this is lack in soil the leaf of the plantain will discolored and plantain will growth stunted. The colour of the leaf will change to Light Green Yellow color.

I don't have crops that lack this element I would have give your the pictures. But if you notice change in colouration of your plantain leaf know that your crop is lacking certain critical element call Zinc.

Sulphur Deficiency

Sulphur is vital to plantain likewise other crops too. A deficiency in Sulphur will affect a plants protein synthesis structure and chlorophyll production. Lack of Sulphur will lead into stunted growing of plantain that lead into low yield of your plantain.

How to identify sulphur deficiency in plantain plant. The plantain will experience yellowing or pale greenish coloring throughout the plant.

The young leafs will suffer from chlorosis with their tips becoming necrotic over all plant development and growth will be stunted without enough sulphur in the soil.

This symptom resemble lack of Nitrogen. To distinguish deficiency of sulphur from Nitrogen deficiency. look for red pigment in d vain of young leaves for Nitrogen deficiency, while in Sulphur deficiency there will not typically affect the vein pattern s on leaves.

Sulphur Deficiency often occur in area with heavy rainfall. If you plant your plantain on a sloppy land, lack of Sulphur Deficiency is at risk on this type of soil. the sulphur will be wash away by rain, since sulphur is soluble in water.
Also in area of high level of phosphorus may displace sulphur from the soil.

it is very lucrative if you can able to find job abroad but in Nigeria stop waste your time go and look for another skill to venture into. You will find it hard to get job here in Nigeria. Most of oil company prefer to use arc welding to weld pipe line rather than use argon which is very costly.

I learn the skill since 2015 from one training centre along Lagos Badagry express road around oko afoo side. I could not be able to to secure a single job today. Not only me including my colleague too..

I will advise you to think of another source of revenue for yourself.
To me it is not lucrative...it is time wasted and money consumption.....

You can engage in farming like me ...u can also engage yourself in buying and selling of agro products or engage in farming directly.....This is direction of government presently

Deficiency of Phosphorus on plantain
The leaf will turn dark green, few months after the entire leaf will dry off and dead.

Nitrogen Deficiency

To identify lack of Nitrogen on plantain crops you need to observe the colour of the leaves.

...the leaves will loss it green pigment
.....the leaves are clop together like umbrella
.....the leaves will turn yellow

Major factors that affect the yield of plantain are lack of micro Nutrients on plantain crop. Lacking of certain nutrients on plantain accompany with certain symptom. Below are list of micro Nutrients on plantain crop;

Dear friend, you don't need to do soil test before you before you start Plantain farming. but if you have financial muscle to pay soil expert, no problem you can go ahead...

But you can do it by yourself, the soil should be black in colour. when you are working the land you will be observe that your leg is sinking on the soil. There should be big trees that had covered the soil for very long time. in short ask any old famers around you if the soil is good for cultivation of cocoa. The best soil for cocoa is also good for plantain

in case they have cultivate on the land few years back you can still make use of it but you need to enrich the soil
