10. Never plant a new seed on large scale before doing trials unless you have seen it somewhere.

11. Never entrust your million dollar idea against a farmhand, ensure you are present during critical stages of crop development untill marketing.

12. Never employ a close family member to manage your farm, most of them will fail you.

13. If you are neighbouring farmers plant same crop.

14. Always have a farm plan.

15. If you are new in farming try to have mentor to guild you on how to handle your farm for maximize yield.

The only herbicide o know that can kill Plantain is 2-4 D you need to use original one ..and make sure the concentration is high...
Plantain is very difficult to wipe out with herbicide...

Yes, it will be able over populated, but remember your question, you said your plantain of 5 years old is no longer big again. Those new suckers that produce will not big like the first batch you initially planted. That very spot has weak it can't longer produce big Butch for you. What you need to do is to look for all means to reduce the population of the original plantain and encourage the new one.

By the time you plantain at another spot it will look like new farm.... remember you dont need to buy any suckers again. You extra your suckers from old farm.

I think you got my point clearly. Either you apply manure or you burn it, it can't change the out put.. I have tried the method and it work for me.

Generally if your plantain farm is on upland, it is normal to fall during dry season like this. This is because you know plantain is water loving crop, when it lack water it will display all such of sign you observe. Like small in size free falling and so many.

I will not support idea of set up your plantain on fire. This is because it is too risky. What I will suggest is to wait till rainfall resume, reposition where you plant is before. I mean, you move like 2-3ft away from previous point, you plant new plantain on it and indirect you forget about previous one.

You will definitely get new results, you don't need to burn the farm or apply fertilizer, they have no or little effect to the challenge you are facing now....

Yee you can apply it your fertilizer of any kind during dry season, but you need to do some extra work. What you need to do it to wet the whole farm very well by make sure that the land is property wet so that the soil can soak the fertilizer to enable it absorb by the crops.
After wetting you can apply your fertilizer.. following day you wet it again by then the fertilizer should be mix with the soil.
Hope you know how to wet your crops during dry season. You have to wake up very early in the morning and should be done before 9am.

How much are they selling plantain in local market around you?

These and more are questions people been asking me around this season of harvest.
I have discussed these times without numbers how to go handle the sales and marketing of your plantains after harvest.

There are 3 major factors that determine the sales prices. These are :
1. The sizes of the plantain,
2. The location of markets you sell your plantain.
3. season you harvest your Plantain.

1. Sizes these depends on how big is your Plantain bunch. This can be achieve by taken two steps, if you get a good breed like my own, which is available for procurement at anytime, and get a suitable soil to cultivate it.
This size is very important to determine how much you will sell it. If you have small bunches, I will advise you should not sell it directly, you may decide to process it into chips and sell it directly.
From my practical experience I have 5 bunches of plantain which are very small and I decided to process it Into Plantain chips, after I remove money for vegetables and other to process plantain chips, I have extra profit of N45,000 from 5 bunches not up till half bunches. If I decided to take it to Market to sell it can't sell a dozen more than 25k no matter the season. Therefore the size and add t
value to your products will bring you more money.

This doesn't make sense to me. 1st ....check the color of the soil, black color is preferable. In some cases red soil is ok if it moldy in nature...or clay or something inform of gum.

2. Dig your Cutlass on the soil for like 30cm and remove it. If there are some particle of sand attached to the Cutlass. Such land it good for cultivation of Plantain.

3. If the sand is plaster in sand. I mean this kind of soil bricklayer use in plastering house. If you can't identify this call one Bricklayer along.

Late Year Planting

This is August, can I still plant my plantain suckers now?

Someone called me few days ago know if he can still plant plantain now. And I told YES he can still plant.

We are in August brake any moment from now rainfall will start over till end of this year. If you plant now, it will be best advantage for you because you git chance of harvest during scarcity period of coming year.
I do take advantage of August brake to clear new farm and set it on fire. Before rainfall resume I plant. Before end of the year it will grow perfect but still small, it can't dry off during dry season. In case your soil is very hot some few may die in which I will be already prepared for. Let assume I need to harvest 900 bunches, I will plant a thousand. If 100 dry off, I don't mind.

By the time it will be ready for harvest that will be scarcity period when plantain is very costly.
