Scientists studying the lethal Ebola virus say they have found how it blocks and disables the body's ability to battle infections in a discovery that should help the search for potential cures and vaccines. In the largest and deadliest outbreak of the disease yet recorded, Ebola has killed more than 1,000 people in West Africa since March. A group of scientists in the United States found that Ebola carries a protein called VP24 that interferes with a molecule called interferon, which is vital to the immune response. Immune system disrupted "One of the key reasons that Ebola virus is so deadly is because it disrupts the body's immune response to the infection," said Chris Basler of the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, New York, who worked on the study. "Figuring out how VP24 promotes this disruption will suggest new ways to defeat the virus." The team, lead by Gaya Amarasinghe from Washington University School of Medicine, found that VP24 works by stopping something called "transcription factor STAT1" - which carries interferon's antiviral message - from entering the nucleus of a cell and initiating an immune response.http://m.news24.com/nigeria/Lifestyle/Scientists-find-how-Ebola-disables-immune-response-20140814-2 |

Youth in Taraba State called on leaders from the north to desist from allegedly frustrating President Goodluck Jonathan's tactics against terror as well as his presidential ambitions for 2015. They thus called on the Northern Elders Forum to desist from allegedly threatening the President but "throw their weight behind him" and support his initiatives and ambitions. The youth, represented by their coordinator, Prince Aboki Bayonga Stephen, called on Jonathan not to be deterred from re-contesting for the presidency next year. "We have collectively endorsed President Godluck Ebele Jonathan to re-contest Faye 2015 presidential election," said Stephen. It is reported NEF called on President Goodluck to address the present security challenges and rescue the abducted Chibok girls or "forget re- contest next year's presidential election." The youths observed that the issue of insurgents was not only in Nigeria, but the world at large. They reiterated their readiness to mobilize youths from the "nooks and crannies of the country" in support of the presidential ambition of the President Jonathan in 2015.http://m.news24.com/nigeria/Politics/News/Taraba-youth-back-Jonathan-for-re-election-20140814 |
officer search them oh. Especially the young lady.Well, some people somewhere who are ethnically, religiously, tribally or politically biased will rise up to accuse the security operatives of interfering with the right of freedom of movement of these youths & condemn their rest. Such a nocturnal journey at this time of terrorism & its attendant problems is suspicious. It is high time the elders & elites begin to give positive instructions to their children & wards to restrain them from being willing tools in the hands of mischief makers. On the other hand too, the youths should begin to ask themselves questions as to why they should engage in activities & actions that will undermind their future & indirectly continue to sustain the old order which threatens their future & very existence. Youths should desist from crime & sundry vices, it doesn't pay |
Abuja - Troops have intercepted more than 50 youths in Babale in Plateau State as they journeyed from Maiduguri to Abuja in the night. The motive of the journey was suspicious, according to defense officials. This was disclosed in an alert message by the Defense Headquarters in Abuja. “Officers of the Special Task Force are currently trying to unravel the motive for the movement of some youths from Maiduguri heading to Abuja at about 3am when they were accosted in Plateau State on Wednesday. 51 youths were under the guidance of a lady as they were being conveyed in three 18-seater mass transit buses when they were intercepted along Babale in Plateau state as they journeyed from Maiduguri to Abuja in the night,”part of the message read. It added that during interrogation, the youths claimed they were being conveyed to Abuja on the directives of a Borno State Government official to meet their relatives for assistance in an economic empowerment programme. The message added that the official is yet to respond to series of efforts to verify the claims. “The issue is being investigated to ascertain the genuine mission of such a team of young person’s moving in the night more so as they have made contradictory statements as to the sponsorship of their mission to Abuja. The movement is being assessed in the light of the security situation and the suspicious claims of the youths.” – CAJ News http://m.news24.com/nigeria/National/Suspicious-youths-arrested-in-Plateu-State-20140814 |
