Washington - US health authorities said Friday they are sending extra personnel and resources to Nigeria, which has declared a national emergency as it battles a deadly outbreak of Ebola for the first time. "We are starting to ramp up our staffing in Lagos," US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention spokesman Tom Skinner told AFP. "We are really concerned about Lagos and the potential for spread there, given the fact that Lagos -- and Nigeria for that matter -- has never seen Ebola." Nigeria became the fourth West African country involved in the largest Ebola outbreak in history when a dual US- Liberian citizen who was infected with Ebola traveled by plane to Lagos on July 20. He died five days later. Eight people who came in contact with him have been diagnosed with Ebola, and two have died. Ebola has killed 932 people in Sierra Leone, Guinea, Liberia and Nigeria since March, and has infected more than 1,700 according to the World Health Organization. http://m.news24.com/nigeria/National/News/US-ramps-up-response-to-Ebola-in-Nigeria-20140808 |

Why the delay? Is it when they die all? They say the colonialist conquered Africa by the means of gunpowder from Arabia/ Asia and germs. Hygiene was not a virtue in Europe. The Queen of England is famed to have said she only had a bath once a month, “whether she needed it or not.” King James’ custom was to have his bath only once a year. [Ref] So it was in Europe. A bathroom was not a natural property of a home and till date, we find in England that bathrooms are recent extensions of many homes, being added later. The relevance of this is the relationship between moral hygiene and disease. Europe had the worst plagues in recent human history. The Bubonic plagues... the plagues in the dark eras. These plagues wiped out much of the population of Europe, most especially its men; indeed it was plagues and wars that led to the feminist culture and women in the work environment, because with the death of so many workers, women were forced to work to assist the European economy. The plagues were directly related to filth in Europe. The colonialist picked up soap and bathing habits from his exploits to Africa, the Middle East and Asia. Fast-forward to 2014. Africa is plagued by HIV and plagued today by Ebola. Africa has become the bastion of sorry health problems in addition to other inabilities. What is the commonly attributed source of Ebola (if we deny any biological warfare intentional dissemination), it is from bush meat. In Africa many of us love to eat these wild animals. Baboons, Gorilla’s, snakes and what have you. Nothing will stop us from biting in to the juicy strands of these animals, spicily roasted. And these animals remain the reservoir of Ebola. When we study HIV, we see similar simple cultural behaviors that can diminish HIV rates in Africa. Circumcision which is not only a monotheistic habit in Judea- Christianity and Islam but dates back to Kemetic practices of ancient Nubian Egypt; this simple practice of cutting off the foreskin of the male penis reduces the risk of HIV infection by as much as 60% from scientific studies. The cheapest methods of eliminating health problems is prevention. And much invaluable prevention is in religious and cultural doctrine. In the western world today, they have invested in perfecting expensive methods of curtailing outbreaks and treating diseases. To Africa’s shame, our leaders have been hopeless; hopelessly embezzling all the capital that African states should have used to advance its health-care system; and while they have spent time dancing and swallowing billions of dollars for the state, diseases, crime, terror and other crises have not waited but have advanced as much as modern innovation has permitted. While African leaders today do elaborate opening ceremonies when they build ordinary roads and establish train networks, the world has advanced in leaps and bounds in disease management and also in type of deadly germs. |
Washington - US President Barack Obama said on Wednesday it is "premature" to send experimental drugs for the treatment of Ebola to West Africa, which has been hardest hit by the deadly outbreak. Obama said affected countries should focus on building a "strong public infrastructure", adding: "I think we have to let the science guide us... I don't think all the information is in on whether this drug is helpful." He emphasized that Ebola, a hemorrhagic virus that kills more than half of those infected, "is not an airborne disease. http://m.news24.com/nigeria/Africa/News/Obama-Too-early-to-send-experimental-Ebola-drug-to-Africa-20140807-3 |

I don't think Elechi deserve to be impeached.not now. |
The Ebonyi State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), on Tuesday, called for the impeachment of the state Governor, Martin Elechi, over alleged incompetence, gross misconduct, reckless borrowing, loss of focus and abysmal performance. Briefing journalists in Abakaliki on the prolonged crisis rocking the state House of Assembly and Elechi’s performance, state Secretary of the party, Bernard Ebele, said the most eligible person to be impeached is the governor. According to him: “The members of Ebonyi State House of Assembly should stop victimising themselves and come together to enact laws that would move Ebonyi State forward. The most eligible person to be impeached is the governor of Ebonyi State”, he stated. “The axe of impeachment should descend on Elechi for incompetence, gross misconduct, reckless borrowing, loss of focus and abysmal performance”. Ebele said governor has imposed starvation, taxation, deprivation and victimisation on the people of Ebonyi State, adding that for over seven years, the governor has not completed and commissioned any single project. “Ochudo City is yet to be completed. International Market is yet to be completed, likewise Oferekpe Water Scheme”. In a related development, the state Police Command, also on Tuesday, said it does not yet recognise anybody as Speaker of the state House of Assembly. The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the command, Chris Anyanwu, told Daily Independent that the police were waiting for the position of the state government on the matter. He explained that the police are providing security for everybody in the state including the two persons laying claim to the post of the Speaker. Some lawmakers of the 24- member House of Assembly, on July 21, announced the removal of Chukwuma Nwazunku as Speaker, and his replacement with Helen Nwobasi, a development that has thrown up confusion as to who should be regards as the Speaker. http://dailyindependentnig.com/2014/08/apc-calls-impeachment-elechi/ |
Descartes: He added the threat to institute a parallel government by the APC was "nothing short of implementing the agenda to destabilize and collapse the democratic system and institute a reign of anarchy." —SourceAPC threatens to form parallel government 2014-08-06 10:30 Osogbo - The All Progressive Congress (APC) has threatened to form a parallel government in the country if the 2015 presidential election is not free and fair, reports New Telegraph. The party’s national chairman, John Odigie-Oyegun, said its party would resist all attempts by President Goodluck Jonathan and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)-led Federal Government to steal the people’s mandate in the 2015 general elections as they did in the Ekiti State governorship election. Oyegun who was speaking at a rally in Osogbo to round off the campaign for the re- election of the party’s candidate in the August 9 governorship election in Osun State, said the battle line has been drawn as the party would no longer recognise a fraudulent government from any quarters. |
APC’s understanding of ‘rigging’ is where they lose election. I'm highly disappointed wit Oyegun,APC chairman threating another war as Buhari did hwever i'didnt blame them but rather the youth for being used for their selfish motive, can any of them use their own children? |
Abuja - The ruling People's Democratic Party (PDP) has accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) of planning an Arab Spring in the country. The Arab Spring refers to the overthrow of governments in Arab Africa at the beginning of 2012. Also read: APC threatens to form parallel government "Our attention has been drawn to an open threat by the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief John Odigie-Oyegun to institute a parallel government should his party lose the 2015 general elections," Olisa Metuh, PDP spokesman said. "Nigerians need to be reminded that the APC’s understanding of ‘rigging’ is where they lose election. Whenever they win as was the case in Edo, it is free and fair," added. He added the threat to institute a parallel government by the APC was "nothing short of implementing the agenda to destabilize and collapse the democratic system and institute a reign of anarchy." Also read: PDP downplays Oyinlola's defection to APC "The statement by the APC National Chairman therefore has confirmed our position that the APC is not planning for the 2015 election but an overthrow of a democratically elected government having realized that they cannot and will not win in the general elections," the PDP statement added. Metuh said the pronouncement confirmed the APC is indeed promoting a "supporter of APC ideology" and further reinforced the long held suspicion that they had been holding meetings outside the country to enact an Arab Spring as a means to forcefully take over power when it loses in 2015. "This explains why they have been making inflammatory statements and publishing negative advertorials and articles in local and foreign media to incite Nigerians, embolden insurgents and stir hatred and division among the populace while balkanizing the nation along its fault lines." http://m.news24.com/nigeria/Politics/News/PDP-reading-much-into-APC-parallel-govt-threat-20140806 |
As more people who came in contact with the Patrick Sawyer, the first Ebola fatality in Nigeria begin to show symptoms associated with the virus, the Nigerian government said it has reached out to United States health authorities for access to the experimental drug used to treat two American volunteer doctors who were infected with the disease while treating Ebola patients in Liberia. The Minister of Health, Onyebuchi Chukwu, told Journalists that Nigeria government is in consultation with the U.S. Centre for Disease Control, CDC, to acquire the “secret serum” used in the treatment of American doctors, Kent Brantly and Nancy Writebol. The experimental “secret Serum” is said to have had an almost immediate effect on the doctors and their health improved considerably. Though it reportedly proved effective in the treatment of primates, the Americans were the first humans to be treated with the drug known as “ZMapp,” and developed by a San Diego-based biotech firm, Mapp Biopharmaceutical Inc. “We are in touch with the Americans. Yesterday, I spoke on telephone with the Director of the US Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, Dr Tom Freiden. We spoke at length, and we have exchanged emails. Yesterday, I inaugurated the Treatment Research Group and one of its terms of reference is to collaborate with similar working groups across the world. Now that they have started work, they will get in touch with the Americans and understand what they are doing and whether we have access to similar opportunity,” said Mr Chukwu. The minister added that he has confidence in the committee of medical and health experts constituted by the government to develop a drug for the treatment of the virus. “Nobody says that new, fresh ideas cannot come out of Nigeria. We should not underestimate the intelligence of Nigerians. I do not underestimate the intelligence of our professionals, I believe something positive is going to come out.” Meanwhile, despite being on a five-week long strike, the Nigerian Medical Association, NMA, has set up a committee to combat the spread of thr virus. Speaking at a press conference to sensitise the public of preventive measures against the virus, the Chairman of the Lagos chapter of the NMA, Tope Ojo, said a team of doctors from the state have already volunteered to help patients at the Infectious Disease Hospital, Yaba, Lagos. “Strike or no strike, we must respond to emergencies. Our doctors are at Mainland Hospital, Yaba, where isolated contacts are being monitored. There are seven committees working on the management of the disease at the centre in Lagos and our members are part of the various committees,” he said. “When there is disaster outbreak, you find out that there will be response by NMA. The issue of strike will not affect our involvement. The NMA is a responsible body and I can assure you that in as much as we don’t pray for natural disasters, NMA will definitely respond. We worked all through the night trying to find out who should be here or there today. It is not a question of if the hospital is on today we work more than what we have been doing. “But the committee where we are having challenges getting volunteers is case management. This is the people that work directly with confirmed and suspected cases. “Look at the protective measures that doctors in Liberia and Guinea wear. They are well protected, yet some of them still caught it. Our doctors are worried about the danger it poses to their lives and they need to be reassured. We understand their fears and we are making moves to confirm the level of preparedness of the government for doctors.” Mr. Ojo also added that apart from the doctor who is confirmed to have Ebola, a matron at the hospital is also showing symptoms of the virus. “We know that the infected doctor is stable, however, the matron is now showing symptoms. But everybody including the experts from the World Health Organisation are doing all they can.”https://www.premiumtimesng.com/foreign/166118-ebola-nigeria-reaches-out-to-u-s-for-experimental-drug-nma-sets-up-committee.html#sthash.H4DbLkcZ.dpbs |

Abuja - Latest governance poll results suggest more than 60 percent of adult locals approved the performance of President Goodluck Jonathan over the past month. Research think-tank, NOIPolls, conducted the poll which established 62 percent of the adult population gave the approval. This rating portrays a five- points increase from June 2014 and represents the highest rating in the 19 month period that NOIPolls started monthly governance polls in January 2013. The increase in the president’s rating is largely due to the highly positive ratings recorded in the South-East and South-South zones with 80 percent each. More findings revealed that the President received an average ranking for his performance on Economy, Education, Health, Agriculture & Food Security, Transportation and Foreign Policy & Diplomacy, while he was ranked very poor for his performance on Job Creation, Power and Security. These results represent the seventh in the 2014 monthly series of governance polls conducted by NOIPolls to gauge the opinions and perceptions of Nigerians regarding the approval rating of the President, the performance of the President on key elements of his transformation agenda, and the state of power supply in the country. Assessing the President’s performance by geo-political zones discloses that at least half of the respondents across all geo-political zones approved of the President’s performance in July 2014. The South-East and the South- South zones accounted for the largest fraction of respondents who approve of the President’s job performance (80 percent each). The North-West zone and the South-West zone have the highest number of respondents who were neutral with 15 percent each. Also, the North-West has the largest proportion of respondents who disapprove of the President’s job performance with 35 percent, according to NOIPolls. http://m.news24.com/nigeria/National/News/Majority-approves-Jonathans-performance-in-July-20140805 |
