PORT HARCOURT— The Rivers State Police Command said it has rescued two kidnap victims from their abductors, after a serious gun battle with the kidnappers.
The command said the two victims identified as Mr. Jackson Sunday and Mrs. Mary Monday were rescued, Wednesday, after the Anti-kidnapping Squad of the Rivers State Police command stormed a kidnappers hideout in Ogbakiri waterfront in Emohua Local Government Area of the state.
The Public Relations Officer of the Command, DSP. Ahmad Muhammad, who disclosed this to newsmen said the two victims were freed in two separate coordinated rescue operations by the tactical unit of the command, revealing that the victims were kidnapped on different days at Rumuodara and Rumuigbo respectively.
Muhammad added that three of the suspected kidnappers were fatally wounded during the operations.
He said: “On storming the hideout, the suspected kidnappers found guarding the victims engaged our men in gun duel. Three unidentified suspected kidnappers were fatally wounded while the victims were rescued unhurt.”
He revealed that one AK 47 rifle, one locally made pistols, twenty rounds of ammunition, charms and SUV belonging to Jackson Sunday were recovered from the kidnappers’ den.

A Malaysian High Court, Monday sentenced a Nigerian national to death by hanging after he was found guilty of trafficking 915.6 grammes of methamphetamine three years ago.
Judge Datuk Wan Afrah Wan Ibrahim made the decision after she was satisfied that the prosecution has proven the case against the accused, whose identity was given as Ekene Collins Isaac, 37, beyond reasonable doubt.
The prosecution presented 13 witnesses while the defense had one witness who testified during the trial.
The accused, who was a cleaner in Nigeria, committed the offence at Wad 6C, Serdang Hospital, at Jalan Puchong, Kajang, between 7.20am on March 3, 2012 to 1pm on March 5 of the same year.
He was charged under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and Section 39B(2) of the same Act which carries the mandatory death penalty.
The drug was found inside the accused’s body and he was alleged to have swallowed it before flying to Malaysia.
The accused was represented by V. Samynathan while deputy public prosecutor Nazir Amir Johari prosecuted.

Three wives of a Village Head and their 10 children were on Sunday feared killed as a female suicide bomber attacked their home in Maiduguri, Borno State capital, witnesses said.

The woman who took advantaged of the chaotic situation when soldiers of the Nigeria Army were busy engaging Boko Haram fighters in a shootout during a repelled attack on the city, pretended Boko Haram was chasing her, as she ran into the compound of one Bulama Isa, a Village Head.

“She ran into Bulama Isa’s compound shouting ‘Boko Haram, Boko Haram’”, said Ahmed Bala, a resident of Maiduguri.

“When the families of Isa all came out of their rooms to meet the woman in the center of their compound, the woman simply detonated the bomb she had under her garment killing the man his three wives and ten children”, said Bala.

Bulama Isa who had not returned home yet at the time his home came under attack managed to survive another suicide attack at the entrance of his home.

Sources said another female suicide who was lurking in the dark as the grief struck head of the family walked into his attacked compound, jumped out and detonated herself: but the village head was lucky again. He was able to escape with minor injury, but the blast had succeeded in killing a woman with her baby.

Official says PDP got funds for election

How much of the $2.1 billion arms purchase cash went into the Ekiti and Osun states governorship elections?

What role did a former minister play in the alleged diversion of the funds?

These are some of the questions the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is battling to answer in its probe of the phoney arms deals that set the treasury back by millions of dollars.

The cash was wired into the former minister’s accounts, the anti-graft agency is believed to have discovered.

Governorship elections were held in Ekiti (June 2014) and in Osun (August 2014).

But the former minister, one of the leading lights of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the Southwest, has sneaked out of the country.

It was learnt that he may relocate from his hideout because it is considered as “unsafe” for him.

There are fears that if he remains in the hideout, his extradition for trial would be easier, a source told The Nation.

The source said: “The huge funds were paid into the accounts of the ex-Minister for elections in the two states.

“There are allegations that the funds were not disbursed as expected because the candidates had their own campaign funds.

“Although some military and security personnel were to benefit from the slush funds, they were also shortchanged.”

Some bankers who managed the accounts have already given some information to EFCC investigators.

“But we have discovered that the ex-Minister has sneaked out of the country. As soon as we establish his whereabouts, we know what to do,” the source said.

The Nation could not reach the former minister last night.

It was gathered that another N1.450billion fraud had been uncovered by the EFCC following revelations by one of the accused persons on trial.

The discovery is contained in the heap of evidence filed in the court by EFCC for the trial of 10 suspects.

The money was paid into some accounts which were submitted by a “former Accountant-General” whose identity the suspect in the Office of the National Security Adviser(ONSA) refused to disclose.

“I could remember the following companies and account numbers were submitted by the former Accountant -General which we paid monies into. Below are the companies and amounts so far paid: Stellavera Dev Company(N300m); First Aralac Global Limited(N300m); First Aralac Global Limited(N100m); Damaris Mode(N300m); Stellavera Dev Company(N200m) and Whese Farms Ltd(N250m).

“I was directed to pay monies into the above accounts. I do not know what the monies were meant for, “ the accused person said.

Meanwhile, a Staff Officer, Account 1, Yazidu Ibrahim has disclosed that most payments from the ONSA were meant to pursue the PDP presidential election.

He claims to have payment vouchers of all funds remitted to PDP beneficiaries, companies and contractors.

He made the disclosures in a statement made to EFCC as a witness.

Ibrahim said: “My duties include recording financial transactions and to keep custody of all duplicate copies of financial transactions. Also to prepare bank reconciliation statements and to collect statements from all banks.

“The year 2014-2015 transactions were mainly to support the presidential election of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

“Those payments to contractors or individuals by deposit into their accounts were based on instructions from the DFA. The tellers are attached to the payment vouchers.

“All payments to contractors are based on directive from DFA. Sometimes, there is accompanying document; most times, there is nothing except account details of contractors.”

Having laid the structure for governance, especially with the appointment of key personnel and ministers, President Muhammadu Buhari’s real test in office would probably be in 2016. The president has shown himself ready to ride out the storm into the coming year, with the presentation of his 2016 appropriation bill to the National Assembly last week.
However, Daily Trust on Sunday has identified some of the major obstacles that could pose formidable challenge to Buhari, as he set out to achieve his goals.

Fuel subsidy
As another year begins, Nigerians will be waiting for Buhari’s decision on the highly controversial subject of fuel subsidy. There have been calls for him to end the policy, which experts and many Nigerians have blamed for the crippling fuel scarcity sweeping across the country.
The consideration for the removal or not of oil subsidy would be a tough decision the presidency must take in 2016. Nigerians will watch closely to see whether or not Buhari can summon the political courage to put an end to it, so as to end the perennial problem of fuel scarcity and the attendant massive corruption associated with fuel importation.

Boko Haram
After his swearing in, President Buhari gave his military commanders a December deadline to bring an end to the Boko Haram insurgency that has ravaged parts of the North-East. Early in the week, he was quoted as saying that the Boko Haram insurgents have been “technically defeated.” This view was repeated by the Minister of Information, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, who said that Boko Haram had been degraded to a level where they cannot hold on to any Nigerian territory.
These developments show a marked improvement from the past, when the insurgents controlled and hoisted their flags in many local governments in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa states. But despite the successes recorded, insurgents have continued to launch pockets of attacks, including suicide bombings, especially on civilians targets. Similarly, thousands of Nigerians are still being hosted in IDP camps in various parts of the country, because their communities have not been declared safe for them to return. One of the challenges Buhari will face in the new year is setting a realizable time-frame to clear the North-East of Boko Haram remnants for the displaced persons to return home. Closely related to this, is the handling of the problems of kidnapping and cattle rustling that are on the rise in parts of the country.

Payment of salaries
Payment of salaries has been a major crisis for many state governors when they assumed office in May this year. This led many of them seeking bail-out from the federal government which President Buhari approved to be done through the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). The CBN disbursed N338 billion as special intervention fund to states, especially to pay arrears of salaries.
The problem of payment of salaries has remained a bottleneck on many state governments. How that would be addressed against the backdrop of dwindling oil revenues will be a hard nut to crack by Buhari’s government.

What to do with Jonathan
With his election hinged mainly on the fight against corruption, President Buhari has taken the matter head-on with the prosecution of retired Colonel Sambo Dasuki, former National Security Adviser (NSA) to ex-president Goodluck Jonathan, over allegation of misappropriation of funds for the purchase of arms. Some of the arms deal were said to have been approved by former President Jonathan. But the presidency has so far not shown any interest in questioning Jonathan over the arms deal, even though a number of his associates have been arraigned over the matter.
The arms deal is just one of many areas Buhari would be probing and many other sectors may be investigated 2016, raising the question of what President Buhari would do with his predecessor. His media aide, Femi Adesina, recently said the President’s hands were not tied over Jonathan, describing the possibility of investigating the former leader as a bridge that they would cross when they get to it. Whether or not the administration will get to the bridge in 2016, Nigerians will wait and see.

What next for anti-corruption fight?
Starting with the misappropriation of funds for the purchase of arms by the immediate past administration, what is in store for other sector and individuals? Invariably, key arrears of the economy might be investigated too. This may include the petroleum and the federal ministry of finance. This is surely a task before the Presidency in 2016.
In the past, anti-corruption agencies have carried out investigations of corruption cases and charged suspects to courts, where the cases were lost, frustrated or abandoned.
The litmus test for Buhari’s war against corruption will be the number of cases uncovered, investigated, prosecuted and convicted, as well as the money recovered.

Decreased naira value
The naira has been on a steady fall for months, to its present rate of about N260 against the dollar. One of the biggest challenges for Buhari in the new year is how to stop the continuous decline of the naira, which ripple effects can affect the economic policy of his government.

Power supply
Over the years, providing adequate electricity has been a serious challenge in the country. There have been cases where various probe panels revealed huge sums of money were expended in the sector without commensurate development.
Even at that, President Buhari is expected to do more in the power sector next year and also to resuscitate the Mambilla hydro power project which the Chinese are interested in.

Keeping the APC together
With the election over and the spoils of victory placed on the table, the gladiators in the fight are angling for recognition in the scheme of things. Certainly, next year, the president has to contend with some APC stalwarts, key among them, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Chief Bola Tinubu, Dr. Rabiu Kwankwaso, Alhaji Aliyu Wamakko and former Speaker, House of Representatives and Governor of Sokoto State, Alhaji Waziri Tambuwal. These are important figures that contributed to the party’s victory at the national level. Buhari has to find a means of accommodating their personal and political ambitions, so that they do not appear to have lost out in sharing the spoils of victory.

Can his cabinet deliver?
President Buhari took a long time to shop for the right people to appoint as members of his cabinet. As expected key persons were assigned to “core” ministries in what the government considered its commitment to sustainable development. Nigerians are expecting so much from the cabinet. Among those saddled with key assignments upon whom Nigerians hinge their hopes are: Audu Ogbeh, Agriculture, Rotimi Amaechi, Transportation, Chris Ngige, Labour and Employment, Kayode Fayemi, Solid Minerals, Babatunde Fashola, Power, Works and Housing, Ibe Kachikwu, State for Petroleum and Isaac Folorunsho, Health. The president has made job creation, reviving of agriculture, development of infrastructure and solid mineral sector as the cardinal objectives of his government. This, therefore, put the spotlight on the performances of the ministers manning these portfolios.
No doubt, President Buhari is unlucky as Nigerians, now than ever before are in a haste to see development in the country and the cabinet must live above board - one thing Buhari must not fail in 2016.

Juliet Joseph Emerges Winner Of Miss North-east Beauty Pageant


Nineteen year old Miss Juliet Joseph from Adamawa State, has emerged the winner of the maiden edition of Miss North East Nigeria Beauty Pageant that took place at the main bowl of Wanenosom Cinema in Numan local government of Adamawa State.

The contest which took pace on Friday evening, saw many participants from across the region slugging it out for the coveted crown.

It was after the rigorous exercise that Miss Joseph emerged winner, while the duo of Rose Clement, 23, and Blessing Amos, 24, emerged first and second runners up respectively.

The beauty contest which was organised by M2 Ventures, Nigeria and E&T Management, Nigeria was attended by many entertainment buffs across the country including NAYDO, Funky Mallam and Jreal.

In an interview session shortly after the event, founder of the Miss North-east Beauty Pageant Angelyna Kimu Mindapa said the aim of organising the event was to showcase the beauty of the region, provide a mentor for young ladies in education, humanitarian service and entrepreneurship and to provide an avenue for indigenous ladies to attend national and international beauty pageants.

She noted that the event was organised in four segments including an interview session, named after Nyaka Mindapa, a renowned journalist who died last year.

According to her, the other segments include casual dress segment, and traditional dress from the North-east segment.

Other awards won during the beauty contest, included Miss Congeniality, Miss Photogenic and Best traditional outfit which ended in a tie.

We are a 200+ people strong workforce working as direct contractors for a blue chip oil company in Rivers State since year 2000.
Our employers shocked us this morning by confirming what we hitherto suspect. That they were wrong to be taxing our allowances. For 16 years they have been taxing both our salary and allowances in a frivolous scheme they call PAYE(pay as you earn) without any tax receipt or clearance from any tax collecting agency whatsoever.
Today they told us that henceforth our allowances will not be taxed and that the management has magnanimously decided to refund tax monies charged on our allowances from May 2015 to date. We now asked what happens to the one they have been collecting for 16 years. And the reply we got was "that one is past".
Please I need clarification from tax experts/legal practitioners on:
1. Is it right to tax both our salary and allowances?
2. Does it not amount to fraud against the state to collect taxes from workers and keep same?
3. Is it right for the company to deny us our accrued illegally collected tax money which runs into hundreds of thousands( if not million) per head?
4. What lawful action can we take to recover these illegal deductions?
We believe their action is out of fear of Buhariyya.

As dstv is satellite dish, how about and would it work if I get someone back in nigeria to subscribe to dstv and activate the dstv box in nigeria then post me box and card to use in the uk. If this me method is possible all I then need to do is use my current sky dish for the dstv box or maybe use a motorised dish system.

It was already sunset but the majority of the young men who were busy transplanting the seedlings in the vegetable plots in our farm were still roaring to continue. “They will have to do that without me”, I said to myself, lifting my boots and handsets and made to get to my car parked at the far side of the farm. As I walked briskly towards my car, however, I saw some half a dozen or so young men making their way into the farm on foot towards us. They were not unlike the other young men working on the seedlings or those from the surrounding villages that always pop into the farm in search of jobs. I paid no attention to them nor the way they looked or what they were carrying. I just thought they were desperate ‘labourers’. Alas, how tragically wrong; they were gunmen! As soon as they sighted me, all six of them charged forward and soon formed a cordon, holding their guns at point blank range. “Don’t move, don’t move.... Kneel down...” they shouted rapidly. In the meantime, about three of them had gone to round up the ‘real’ labourers working on the seedlings; now sorely overwhelmed by what was happening. “Kowa ya Kwanta... Kwanta” they told them, pointing guns to their heads. Momentarily, an eerie silence took over; no one spoke, none moved. That appears to be the state of affairs they craved. They have subdued everyone and everything, no obstacle stood on their way. Now, they were ready to embark on the next phase of their operation- taking away the hostage. “Tashi mu je, mu je....” (“Get up, let’s go, let’s go...”), again they shouted, pointing in the direction of the thick bush across the nearby stream. And off we went. Soon, we were in the bush; some two gunmen in front, three behind, I hemmed in the middle - a position I never was to escape until twenty four hours later and trekking for over 50 Kilometres. That was how I became a hostage and the unwilling guest of a certain band of dare-devil gunmen roaming and abducting innocent people these days in virtually all parts of Nigeria. It took place on Thursday, the 3rd of December, 2015 on the outskirts of the notorious Rijana forest, situated along the Kaduna - Abuja highway. The conversation and dialogue I had with them was made possible by the nature of kidnap operations. Unlike armed robbery or burglary, where bandits conduct their operations with the speed of light, kidnapping for ransom is necessarily a slow, tedious process, giving plenty of room for all parties to get to know each other fairly well. And, in my case, I made a deliberate, determined effort to establish a personal rapport and struggled to open up some form of dialogue between us. For over 24 hours, the kidnapers and I were either trekking, relaxing under trees or sleeping together - side by side. On account of my age, the boys were unfailingly respectful and always polite. And yet, needless to say, I never slept a wink nor took a bite of food throughout the period despite their persistent pleas that I did so. It wasn’t a hunger-strike; I just couldn’t bring myself to eat or sleep. In return, I got plenty of time to engage them or listen to them engage each other - thanks to my paltry Fulfulde, the lingua franca of the gunmen. One obvious subject of conversation- one has to proceed from the simple to the complex- was the harsh and nasty living condition they were enduring doing this ‘job’. “Yan samari, wannan aiki da kuke yi wahalarshi bai yawa ba?”- (“young men, is there anyway you can justify the torture this job is inflicting on you?”)- I asked. Although they kept their face masks on, some of them found this question funny or interesting enough to trigger some responses. Indeed, to say that their own living conditions are harsh and hell on earth is a grave understatement. I have my own torture experience to know what they might be going through. One said their ‘wahala’ that day was typical. To get to my farm, they trekked for over six hours through wild forest before arriving at about 4pm. The escape journey began at about 5pm and it was to go on until 9pm without a break. It came to an end at about 12 midnight when we got to a dingy abandoned farm house, home for snakes and other wild beasts. Even here, the bitterly cold hamattan wind was tearing through everywhere, blowing up dust and debris into our eyes, nostrils and ears. Nothing that could alleviate the harshness of nature was in sight. Added to this was the crisis of not having anything to eat or drink. Twelve midnight that day would mark for me at least 12 hours of fasting, six of which was spent trekking through the forest. Unlike me, the gunmen ate groundnuts picked randomly in villager’s field. “Tsakani da Allah, Baba, dole ne yasa mu wannan harkan”, one of them said; no longer bothering to keep on his face mask (“….the honest truth, Baba, we are doing this out of necessity….”). “Amma, me ya yi zafi haka?” (“What necessity?”) I pressed. “Baba, yanzu shi Fulani a Nigeria ya zama abin tausayi. Ana mana taron dangi. An kwashe mana shanu, an hana mu wurin kiwo, babu burtali…. Kai, yanzu bin mu ake ana karkashe mu…… To, zamu mutu kadai?.. Wallahi sai dai mu mutu duka! (Interpretation: Nigerians have ganged-up against us Fulani. We have lost everything- no cattle, no grazing fields, no right of way for cows.. Now, everywhere, they are killing Fulani….. Shall we die alone?... Wallahi we all must die together!”). I asked if they have some ideas how this problem might be resolved other than through violence and banditry. I told them the reason I am asking these questions was because I thought a solution that entailed only violence would leave us all dead. “Yanzu, me abun yi?” (“what realistically can be done, now?”), I asked. “Baba, kaga dai yanzu, cikin mu, babu mai shanu ko daya. Bamu da gonaki, babu sana’a. Muna nan kawai hoto” (“ Baba, do you know that none of us here has any cows of his own? We do not have farms, no business of any kind…. We are just mere ghosts”). Some of these discussions took place while we roamed the wilderness- in search of no particular place but in compliance with their ‘constant mobility’ rule. From time to time, we came across rich fertile lands where rivers flowed, carrying along tremendous volume of water. We discussed them excitedly and always agreed that such places offered vast opportunities for grazing and rehabilitation; just the type of amenities needed to rehabilitate Fulani and other groups who have fallen into unemployment and destitution in recent times. It remains for me to state my appreciation of the events that happened on that fateful day and to make a few suggestions about what we should do to address the underlying problems. The first information I confirmed is that, contrary to what the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association says, virtually all the gunmen stealing cattles, kidnapping and abducting people for ransom in the Northern States, are Fulani. Second, they formed bands and established camps in distant forests and consider cattle to be the main commodity of value. Third, the young boys bearing the guns are of the same age and the look like cattle men. Fourth, the relentless increase in the number of boys available to carry guns appears to match the number of Fulani families that are falling into destitution in recent times. On account of these facts, the conclusion seems inescapable that a vicious cycle of joblessness, destitution, criminality, violence and death has taken root in our society. It is also hard to contemplate what the scenario would be two or three years down the road- if we fail to break this cycle. We have on our hands economic and security emergency of truly serious complexity. No one should pretend that these are ‘normal’ problems of development. We have never faced a situation in our recent history in which half the population have no work to do and fewer still believe they are getting a fair deal in the way Nigeria is being run. Grievances are running deep within groups and individuals and the temptation to resort to crime and/or violence seems overwhelming. As we all know, for war, one side is enough; it is peace you need two. By all means, let’s apply ‘law and order’ strategies while we strive to contain this scourge; because, after all, we are still in early days and, going forward, we will have much to learn from our experiences. What we must never do is to believe that we are helpless in the grips of forces we cannot control. As President Kennedy once said, our problems are man-made and it is entirely within our power to solve them if we work together.
