Nigeria: NFF, Sports Minister Rejects Club Owners' Purported Sack of League Management Company 2 November 2013 , By Aderonke Ogunleye, Source: Premium Times The Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, and the Sports Minister, Bolaji Abdullahi, have rejected a declaration by owners/ managers of clubs in the Nigeria Premier League, NPL, 'sacking' the League Management Company (LMC), which the NFF inaugurated last year to administer the elite division of Nigeria's domestic football. Rising from its meeting in Abuja on Wednesday, October 30, the club owners/managers, in their communique, declared, "The meeting emphasised on the expiration of the tenure of the LMC in line with the terms of reference given to them by the NFF. "The meeting specifically thanked the chairman and members of the LMC for their efforts in organising the just- concluded league, as well as their several innovations and suggestions on the way forward, and wished them well in their future endeavours." However, NFF President, Aminu Maigari, stated emphatically that the LMC remained in place. Speaking from the United Arab Emirates, where the Golden Eaglets are battling to make Nigeria the first country to win the FIFA U-17 World Cup four times, Mr. Maigari insisted that the LMC was inaugurated by the NFF, granted license by the NFF to administer the Premier League on its behalf, and could only be sent packing by the NFF. "I am shocked to hear about a meeting of club owners/ managers where they reportedly told the LMC to hand over to the Secretariat of the League. That is not within their purview; it is the responsibility of the NFF to determine the fate of the LMC. "The LMC has done very well within the past 10 months to reposition the Premier League, and they deserve commendation. The club managers themselves admitted that the LMC has brought several innovations to the running of the League. Why would we want to throw all that away in a hurry? "As far as the NFF, the supreme football-governing body in Nigeria, is concerned, the LMC remains firmly in place and will have the opportunity to continue its good works for a period to be determined shortly," Mr. Maigari insisted. He called on the club owners/ managers to focus on improving the structures of their teams in line with the demands of professional football, rather than get sucked into illusory political manoeuvrings and hysteria. "Sincerely speaking, the NFF will always accord the club owners/ managers their regard and we see them as critical stakeholders in the development of the game in our country. But there is an architecture of authority, which is not horizontal. The NFF has prerogative on issues bordering on the running of the game in Nigeria and has not conceded this authority to any other group or body. "Should the club managers have any grouse with the way the League is being administered, they should approach the NFF with their misgivings and we would resolve such matters, as we have done in the past," Mr. Maigari said. The Sports Minister, Mr. Abdullahi also showered praises on the LMC, saying, "They have gotten money for the league even the clubs themselves are sharing money - sharing dollars - and they said (LMC) should go; where do they want them to go to? The people that brought the money (sponsors) will say, hope their money will not be wasted. I support the NFF's decision. (club owners/managers) should relax and face their clubs." However, the club owners have said that they would proceed with the electoral process. |
Hayatou visits Eaglets CAF President Issa Hayatou visits the Nigeria Under-17 team CAF President Issa Hayatou on Monday paid an inspirational visit to the Intercontinental Hotel abode of the Nigeria Under-17 team, and encouraged them to set a tournament record by winning a fourth world title in the United Arab Emirates. Hayatou, accompanied by CAF First Vice President, Almamy Kabele Camara and Fifa Executive Committee member, Mohamed Raouraoua, praised the resilience of the Nigerian youngsters especially in the quarter final duel with Uruguay on Saturday. “You have displayed a high level of skill and intelligence in this tournament that we have not seen in an African team for a long time. I am not surprised at your progress here because I saw you at the CAN U-17 Championship in Morocco and I was highly impressed. “I am particularly excited with your performance against Uruguay, despite missing a number of injured players. I believe you are already in the final. The African football family is fully behind you,” Hayatou said. The African football supremo also charged the boys to forget Nigeria’s three earlier triumphs in the competition and rather focus on writing their own names in gold. “Yes, Nigeria has won the competition three times before, but that was done by other players. Now, it is your opportunity to write your own names in gold. I believe you have the talent, intelligence and resilience to go all the way.” NFF President Aminu Maigari, who received the CAF President, lauded the visit and assured that the Eaglets are fully motivated to go all out against the Swedes in Tuesday’s semi-final at the Rashid Stadium in Dubai. “It is a huge honour to have the CAF President visit any team in the middle of a tournament, because of his very tight schedule. We are assuring you that our boys are able and ready to do the African continent proud.” Head Coach, Manu Garba, who calls his boys “great warriors of Africa”, said Hayatou’s visit is a massive motivation and the Eaglets cannot fail Africa at this stage. “We will take our remaining challenges in the tournament one at a time, starting with the semi-final against Sweden on Tuesday evening.” |
Warri Wolves Hold Stakeholders Forum on Tuesday ARTICLE | NOVEMBER 4, 2013 - 2:33PM | BY IKENNA AGU The newly appointed Managing Director of Warri Wolves Davidson Owumi will meet with all the club stakeholders with a view of fashioning a way forward for the Club. Those who are to grace the fact finding mission which is expected to start by 10.00am are the Coaches Association, the State League Board, the State Referees Association, Ex- Footballers and the Media. According to a statement signed by the Media Manager of the Club, Etu Moses, only those who are duly involved in these associations should be present to present their view on the way forward. According to Etu, it is a serious business, the first assignment by the new man saddled with the responsibility of repositioning the Club and as such, the Management will only accredit those who will play significant role in the discussions. “ Let me make it clear that the new Managing Director is very serious with this stakeholders meet and as such will welcome only those who have a role to play by coming up with useful suggestions on the way forward. He is not coming to listen to why Mr A did this and why Mr B did that. He wants to hear how the Club can move forward and this is an opportunity for all to contribute before the season starts. I want to advise all stakeholders to turn up in large numbers on time and be seated by 10.00am.’ Meanwhile, Etu has enjoined the fans and all well wishers to wait for the official communication channel of the Club for any information as regards changes or any other thing that will unfold as we prepare for the coming season. “I am saying that nothing has happened in the Club apart from the appointment of the new board. This is because a particular newspaper has been coming out with false stories as regards the Coaching crew and other things. As soon as anything happens, you will be informed adequately so any other news is mere rumour

Swedish melting pot boils over in Emirates (FIFA.com) Monday 4 November 2013 Elias Andersson combined with Gustav Engvall for Sweden’s first goal of the U-17 World Cup. These are two blond-haired, blue-eyed boys with very Swedish names, but it soon became clear that the yellow-clad team competing in UAE is anything but homogeneous. There are 11 different nationalities in the 21-man squad, with players tracing their roots to ports as far afield as Seoul and Kampala, Banjul and Tirana. Join FIFA.com for a closer look at a diverse Sweden team, combining in total harmony on the world stage - serving up their meatballs with spices from all corners of the globe. The story begins with Valmir Berisha. Born in Albania before moving with his family to Sweden when he was two, he’s scored four goals in a menacing and entertaining display. “It’s important for us as a team to have more than just one kind of player,” said the flamboyant No9, who has four goals ahead of a semi-final rematch with Nigeria in Dubai. “Swedish players are known for being strong and fast,” Berisha went on. “But when you throw in the technical ability of the guys like me from the Balkans and the good stuff the African guys bring too, the power and technique, we become more than just one threat.” Albania's loss is Sweden's gain Gentrit Citaku also has Albanian roots and his delicate through ball picked out Erdal Rakip, of Turkish origins, who slotted home elegantly to send Sweden on their way to victory in the quarter-final against Honduras. Having already made his senior team debut for Swedish giants Malmo, it’s likely this won’t be the last Sweden jersey the impressive Rakip pulls on before his career is up. Carlos Strandberg, tall, powerful and dark of skin, has come on as a late substitute in all of Sweden’s games. “My mother’s from Portugal with roots in Mozambique,” he told FIFA.com about his cultural combo-name. “My dad, he’s Swedish, so there’s the Strandberg. “There are guys from all over the world in this team and it’s a really cool thing for us,” added the shy Strandberg, who combined with Anton Saletros, son of a Hungarian immigrant, on the winning goal against Honduras. It was scored by none other than the sensational Berisha, who celebrated like a madman. “I still don’t know what I was doing after the goal,” he said of the bouncing, pogo-ing dance performance that followed his cheeky heel-flick in Al Ain. “I needed to watch the highlights on TV to find out!” Ssewankambo blow Wherever their roots originate, this Swedish team have amazing chemistry, humility, good humour and, perhaps most of all, resilience. They lost their top midfielder, Isak Ssewankambo – who hails from Uganda – to injury after only 15 minutes of football at the finals. With arguably their best midfielder sent home to Chelsea, where he’s already agreed to professional terms, the Swedes soldiered on without him. “The power in depth of this team is just amazing,” said coach Larsson, who’s made three substitutions – the maximum allowed – in every game. “It’s a tremendous feeling for a coach.” Larsson’s defence is marshaled by Noah Sonko, a tall and rangy centre-back who traces his roots back to the Gambia, a west African country not far from Nigeria, who just happen to be Sweden’s next opponent. “I’m not worried about them at all; not bothered one bit,” was the big man’s terse response when asked about the pace and creativity of Nigeria’s attacking line, who have scored 20 times in five games. One wonders if his mates in defence, identical twin brothers Sebastian and Johan Ramhorn – who share a Korean mother – will have the same level of comfort when the goal-hungry Golden Eaglets come calling a second time. Ali Suljic and speedy winger Mirza Halvadzic come from Bosnia, while Christer Lipovac hails from Croatia. Goalkeeper Sixten Mohlin’s blood flows from the Netherlands and the Cape Verde Islands, off the north-western coast of Africa. The story goes on and on. Even the team’s medical staff is of Italian ancestry. Clearly, it’s all one, big happy family for these Swedes who are breathing new life into the old platitude ‘variety is the spice of life.’ |
Group F trio reunited in final four (FIFA.com) Saturday 2 November 2013 THE DAY REPLAYED - The intercontinental double-header between Africa and South America in Sharjah this Saturday ended one-apiece, concluding the quarter-final stage of the FIFA U-17 World Cup United Arab Emirates 2013. In the first game, Argentina scored after just six minutes to unsettle the sturdy defensive system that Côte d'Ivoire have displayed throughout the tournament, before running out 2-1 winners. Then Nigeria overcame Uruguay 2-0 with two goals from Taiwo Awoniyi, who went off in pain near the end. Victory and a place in the semi-finals was reason enough to celebrate for the Golden Eaglets, who had scored an average of 4.5 goals per game in their first four matches. The semi-finals are now confirmed with Nigeria meeting Sweden on one side of the draw, and Argentina against Mexico on the other. One African, one European, one South American, and one North American team representing four football confederations are thus still in with a chance at the trophy. Results Quarter-finals Argentina 2-1 Côte d'Ivoire Uruguay 0-2 Nigeria Memorable moments And the winner of the ‘Group of Death’ award is...Group F! Impressively, this group provided three of the four semi-finalists in the United Arab Emirates, with section toppers Nigeria joined by Mexico and Sweden in the last four. It is the first time in the history of the competition that one group has supplied three semi-finalists. Only Argentina, winners of Group E, crashed the party. Now back home watching on TV, the brave Iraqis must be imagining what might have been if they had been drawn in a different pool. The game of fear Ten players took to the field in the clash between Argentina and Côte d'Ivoire a yellow card away from suspension – six from the South American side and four from the Africans. This was the same number as the Brazil v Mexico and Sweden v Honduras games combined. A single yellow card would be erased for the semi- finals, but a player with two yellow cards to his name would be suspended. As a result, Argentina coach Humberto Grondona will now be without Rodrigo Moreira and Matias Sanchez for the next game. It was potentially even worse for Uruguay coach Fabian Coito, who had eight players on a yellow card. With four from Nigeria, that made 12 players in total who were a card away from suspension. As it turned out, the Golden Eaglets won, and Akinjide Idowu is the only one who will miss out on a semi-final due to suspension. Four from four Argentina and Côte d'Ivoire had met three times previously in FIFA competitions, so today's win made it four from four for the land of Maradona and Messi. The three previous encounters had come at the 1992 FIFA Confederations Cup, the 2006 FIFA World Cup™ and the Olympic Football Tournament of 2008. Argentina have therefore completed a clean sweep against Côte d'Ivoire in all age categories. The Golden Eaglets' win over the young Charruas was some revenge for Nigeria's two 2-1 defeats against Uruguay earlier this year, in the FIFA Confederations Cup and the FIFA U-20 World Cup. One Africa, two cultures "We need to acquire more experience at this level if we are to reach this stage of the competition more often, like Nigeria do," said Baby Elephants coach Ibrahima Kamara after the match. The Nigerian fans, who were out in greater numbers than the Ivorians, also showed maturity by noisily cheering on their boys from the outset, in contrast to the Ivorian supporters who only really got behind their side in the second half. One Golden Eaglet fan even produced a replica of the FIFA World Cup Trophy, perhaps in support of the Super Eagles who look on course to qualify for Brazil 2014. In the end though it was the Nigerian U-17 side who were given a heroes' reception by their adoring fans. The number 12 – The number of times Argentina (5) and Nigeria (7) have reached the semi-finals of the FIFA U-17 World Cup. This is the second time both sides have simultaneously reached the last four of this competition. The last time, at Trinidad and Tobago 2001, Nigeria went on to finish second and La Albiceleste finished fourth. Argentina have never won the FIFA U-17 World Cup, while the Golden Eaglets have triumphed three times. The words "That was a fabulous win over a great team. We were consistently good and well-intentioned throughout, but in the second half Côte d'Ivoire upped their game," Argentina coach Humberto Grondona. Next up Semi-finals - Tuesday 5 November Argentina-Mexico (Abu Dhabi, 17:00 local time) Sweden-Nigeria (Dubai, 20:00 local time) |
