Super Falcons coach, Edwin Okon will submit a 30-man list to the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) technical committee for the two- legged African Women Championship (AWC) qualifying match against Sierra Leone. Falcons will host the West African opponents on February 14 at the Abuja National Stadium while they will head to Freetown, Sierra Leone a fortnight later for the reverse fixture. The winners of the encounter will be a game away from qualifying for the 2014 biennial continent football fiesta holding in Namibia which doubles as qualifiers for the 2015 Fifa Women’s World Cup in Canada. The top three finishers at the Namibia 2014 AWC will automatically qualify to represent Africa in Canada. Okon, who initially opted to bring in 45 players to camp in preparation for the crucial AWC tie, said he has to key into the programme of the football house by scaling down the number of invited players. “I’ll tomorrow (Saturday) submit 30 names to the NFF technical committee for the AWC qualifying match against Sierra Leone. “I thought I could have brought in 45 players, at least, to give me a wider window to take a second look at the players since there is the possibility of drop in form as the season is at rest at the moment. “But the NFF technical committee's directive has corrected that, as we’ll now work with the 30-man squad when we resume on January 6. “However, the elimination by substitution approach will still apply as any player who fails to measure up will be eliminated and substituted immediately. “The encounter against Sierra Leone on February 14 in Abuja is crucial and we must work very hard to obtain a comfortable result so as to make the second leg very easy. “We want to qualify for the AWC in Namibia as well as excel to win a World Cup spot, so the work is enormous and only the best will be given the final nod,” said the Rivers Angels gaffer to supersport.com. Aggregate winners of the two- legged tie are most likely to confront the winners of the tie between Rwanda and Kenya in May and June for a final spot in the 2014 Namibia AWC football event. © supersport.com |

The Nigerian U-20 women football team, the Falconets, on Sunday qualified for the final round of the World Cup qualifiers after defeating Tunisia 4-0 in the return leg match in Tunisia. The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Nigeria won the first leg of the second round qualifiers match against Tunisia 4-0 at the National Stadium, Abuja, on Dec. 14. The team’s Media Officer, Elizabeth Kah, told NAN in a telephone interview after the match on Sunday that the team was delighted to make it to the next round. She said that Winifred Eyebhorid opened scoring for the team in the 13th minute of play, while Patience Okaeme scored the second goal, as the first half ended 2-0. She said that Uchechi Sunday scored the third goal, while Patience Okaeme scored the fourth goal before the end of the second half. Kah said that the Falconets would depart Tunisia on Tuesday to resume camp in Abuja, adding, however, that there would be no Christmas break for the players. “We are coming back to Abuja to resume camp, there is no Christmas break for the team because we have to prepare hard for the final qualifying match, with the first leg match coming up on Jan.11. “The team is going to face either South Africa or Tanzania in the final round qualifier matches to qualify for the World Cup,’’ she said. NAN reports that two African countries will join 14 other nations at the 7th edition of the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup which would take place in Canada between Aug. 4 and Aug. 24, 2014. |

The League Management Company (LMC) is considering an abridged Nigeria Premier League for the coming season, officials have disclosed. The new League season is now expected to kick off in February immediately after the Championship of African Nations (CHAN) in South Africa. The season will also be expected to end in May to allow for the preparation for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. Organisers are now likely to split the 20-team championship into two groups with the top two clubs from each group clashing in a round-robin playoff to determine the league champions. “Clubs are already getting feelers that the new League season will be an abridged one so as to meet the Fifa May deadline for the World Cup preparations,” a club official informed. Clubs may well kick against this format as they did for the past season, arguing that an abridged League would also mean “an abridged budget” from their various state governments. |

The 2013 Super Six Competition for the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) will not hold due to lack of funds, the league's secretary, Isaac Ajisafe, said on Monday. Ajisafe in Abuja said that the competition would be replaced with a ceremonial match between the top clubs in the league's two groups. The competition normally involves the three top clubs from the two groups of the league and is organised annually by the NWFL. The competition, which is used to round up the women league season, helps in determining the league winners, and it also marks the end of the women football season. The league secretary said that the NWFL board took the decision in view of the limited time available to it and after having waited endlessly for funds to come. "The reason why we have waited till this time is that we were trying to see if we will get funds, but it seems they are not forthcoming. "So, instead of waiting for too long, after having waited this long since July when we finished the league competition, we decided to organise a ceremonial match to decide the league winners. "And it will be between the top club from each of the two groups," Ajisafe said. He noted that the date for the match had not been decided but that it would be part of the programme of the league's Annual General Meeting (AGM). "Presently, we cannot give a date for the match because we want it to be part of our AGM programme to mark the end of the 2012/2013 season. "And we do not have a date for our AGM yet, because it has to be after the Annual General Assembly (AGA) of the Nigeria Football Association (NFA). "That is where they (the NFA Congress) will approve the date we will be proposing to them. We will know when the match will hold then," Ajisafe said. Nasarawa Amazons of Lafia won the league's Group A with 33 points while Rivers Angels of Port Harcourt finished first in Group B with 37 points. Both teams will now meet in the ceremonial match to decide the 2012/2013 league winners. (NAN) |

But we know the Confederation Cup will not be an easy competition so we will be prepared for whoever comes our way," said Bosso to supersport.com. As for Warri Wolves, they could come up against tougher opposition in the round of 32. The Seasiders are drawn by Caf to face either US Douala of Cameroon or Aslad de Moundou of Chad. Bayelsa United and Warri Wolves are expected to kick off their campaign in the continent's second tier club competition in the first week of March. |
