Glo Premier League side, Warri Wolves have abolished the payment of signing-on-fees to players with effect from the 2013/14 season. The Seasiders have paid 100% of players signing-on-fees for the 2012/13 Glo Premier League season. A statement from Warri Wolves through their spokesman, Moses Etu revealed that the new management has decided to abolish the contractual fee and in its place introduced performance-based contract. The club said the introduction of performance-based contract for the players will make them to sit up and compete favourably for places in the first-team. The statement also said players will now earn money based on their performances unlike the previous years when players who did not play a single match and yet go home with millions of Naira. “As part of effort to obtain maximum performance from the players, we’ve decided to abolish signing-on-fees and instead what we have now is called performing contract. “This to us will make those of them who are lazy to sit up. If you know that playing more matches will guarantee you more money you will have to work hard but if you think you are there to make the numbers, you will go home empty-handed. “Could you believe that some the players didn’t play more than three matches last season and they’re comfortable? “Do you know that some of the players don’t know why they’re in the club? The era of Father Christmas is gone and anybody who wants money will have to work for it,” the statement made available to supersport.com read. The club have also paid the salaries of the players, match bonuses and signing-on-fees for last season. Wolves finished the out gone season on the sixth position on 55 points. |

A stakeholders meeting to pave the way for the construction of Africa’s largest industrial gas city in Ogidigben, Warri South West Local Government Area of Delta State was held yesterday in Warri with Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan asking for cooperation from all communities in the area to ensure the success of the project. The multi-billion dollars project would be located back to back with EGTL (Escravos Gas To Liquid) project. It is almost similar to the one being constructed by Chevron Nigeria Limited and expected to be completed in seven years. The project, which will occupy a land space of over 2,800 hectares will have among other things a refinery, a gas plant, a fertiliser processing plant and a petrochemical plant. The plant, when completed and fully operational, is expected to provide employment for more than 200,000 persons of different skills and professional qualifications. An excited Governor Uduaghan, while briefing the stakeholders, enjoined the people of the area to cooperate with the Federal Government, the NNPC and the contractors handling the project to ensure that the project got underway without hitches. Dr Uduaghan explained that “the project is a blessing to Delta State” as it will help to strengthen the economy of the state and provide employment opportunities for people. He also asked the people to shun negative actions and comments that may send wrong signals to the international community. His words: ”I appeal to you all to cooperate with us in ensuring that this project gets underway and is successful. We have done it with the EGTL project, so we already have a template for success. All we have to do is to activate the same template and ensure that this project is delivered on schedule,” he said. According to the governor, the project will help to ensure that the gas been flared is also utilised rather than being wasted and used to pollute the environment. The Group Executive Director, Gas and Power of NNPC, Mr David Ige, while briefing the people about the project, said the project was private-driven, aimed at proper utilisation of the nation’s hydrocarbon reserves and expanding the wealth of the country. Mr Ige, who commended Governor Uduaghan for his spirited effort in ensuring that the project remained in Delta State, appealed for necessary cooperation so that the project could be delivered within the stipulated time. Participants at the stakeholders meeting expressed delight at the project, explaining that they would do all within their powers to ensure that the project went on smoothly. They said the benefits were enormous and that every community in the area would join hands with the state and Federal Government to ensure that the project went on without hitches. The communities, which cut across the Itsekiri, Ijaw and Ilaje, promised to cooperate with the government but urged that everyone should be carried along. |

Top officials of the Nigeria Football Federation have revealed that Warri Wolves will be the fourth team to fly Nigeria's flag on the continent next season. There has been controversy over who would take the continental ticket after Enyimba finished second in the League thus picking a CAF Champions League ticket and relinquished their CAF Confederation Cup ticket after they won the Federation Cup. Three seasons ago, Warri Wolves benefitted from a dubious NFF decision that saw Sharks denied a CAF Confederation Cup ticket after emerging as Federation Cup beaten finalists with eventual winners Dolphins emerging double champions. However, the NFF instead of handing Sharks the ticket for the Federation Cup, awarded Warri Wolves the fourth continental ticket after they finished fourth on the Premier league table. "If there was a mistake in the past, we will not continue in the error. The rules are very clear on who represent countries on the continent," a top NFF official said. "When the winner of the Federation Cup wins the league or finishes in the CAF champions League region, then the Federation Cup runners-up gets the ticket if so presented by the National association, so I don't see any form of controversy here. It is simple and clear who picks the fourth ticket."

John Obuh appears to be on a collision course with Enugu Rangers over contractual disagreements. The former Flying Eagles coach was recently unveiled by the management of the Flying Antelopes, as a replacement for Okey Emordi, who resigned at the end of the season. But in spite of the hype surrounding Obuh's appointment, the former Sharks and Kwara United gaffer is reportedly yet to put pen to paper with the Enugu State- owned club, for whom he starred in his playing days. Sources close to the coach have revealed that while Rangers are intent on offering a one-year- deal, Obuh is holding out for a contract with at least a two year duration. The source further disclosed that Obuh is not short of offers and may move on if necessary as Akwa United are also keen to bring him to Uyo, but the tactician however has his heart set on managing Rangers next season.

In a statement released by the club's media officer Kunle Oyeleye, it was stated that from amongst the players who impressed at the screening exercise, a final selection of players will be made later, based on their performance in the NNL Super Four. It was further revealed that the idea behind the screening exercise was to give an opportunity to talented youths to exhibit their potentials and try their luck with the team. Thursday Nov 07, 07:52 +0200 The new Warri Wolves board have been asked to sign up more non-league players after the superb showing of Oghenekaro Etebo last season. Etebo finished as one of the leading scorers in the league this past season and has already been capped at full international level by Nigeria. Football stakeholders in Delta have also enjoined the Davidson Owumi-led board to go for a seasoned young coach who will transform the budding talent that abounds in the nooks and crannies of the state. According to the Wolves media manager, Moses Etu, the stakeholders made these submissions at an interactive season organised by the new board. According to the stakeholders comprising the State Coaches Association, the Referees Council, ex-players, State Sports Writers Association, Supporters Club pointed at the achievement of unknown Oghenekaro Etebo who was picked from the amateur ranks, but has now become a household name in the Nigeria. In the view of the stakeholders, the likes of Etebo are many in the streets and what is left is for the new board to look for them and groom them. The stakeholders reasoned that it would be best to sign up rookies and some experienced ones who are committed to the vision of the club so that Wolves will clinch their first major trophy. |
