This is no time to start waiting for government to do stuff for us.....Platforms like this is what we need to get this kinda stuff done for ourselves.
We also need to work on AI in the field of security as it seems our government have been unable to tackle the security issues we have in the country
You think any Nigerian would wanna voluntarily carry the weight of this country's bleeped up security on their shoulders? I've lost count on the number of Nigerian online shopping, Universities and ISP's database I've looted just for fun not profit due to their crappy security, I would mail them about security bugs, but they wouldn't reply or fix it!

Besides, only a couple of Nigerians, can "work on AI in the field of security" so many are just using ML/AI as a buzz word and they can't either even understand it, or can't explain it easily/properly (meaning, in fact, they don't really understand it well cheesy)

Now this is the sort of solution we would like to see. I know you may be very busy with other projects, but if you can find time to develop this solution, using the hub, or if you can supervise a researcher on this, then we would be able to expand frontiers. I look forward to further interactions with you in the months ahead. It’s all coming together now.

Even if our government thinks and Nigeria builds itself, our lack of maintenance culture will ruin it. But then again, Nigeria is the only country where we benefit from corruption.

hahahaha very very possible.

You know that UV light is a substitute for sunlight in farming? So in an attempt to, say, grow certain crops in a controlled "climate", farmers can make use of indoor farming. And of course, how best to allocate the available but limited artificial sunlight, (UV light source) and artificial rainfall (water) around the indoor farm other than the use of AI robotics.

Similarly, in the application of scarce resources such as fertilizer, in your farm, the use of AI allows you to best determine where it is needed, what quantity is just right, and it allows you predict the yield. Same for pest control.

The aspect of crop harvesting is most interesting.

Most farmers today have decided to adopt machine learning, as well as autonomous systems to reduce their wastage, enhance profit, and make farming more ergonomic.

You know you can also detect the activities of pests in your farm? So that's what it's all about. I'm certain that the X10 yield you mentioned is feasible. We will have some people work on this and maybe invite you to see for yourself.

Fingers crossed.
Pretty cool. I also think the best way of achieving this is through IoT crop management device automation/AI Automation. An AI that'll control humidity, temperature, sunlight exposure of a plant so it can grow without human interference! And since an AI would be far superior with respect to intelligence than humans, and it would grow exponentially higher, it would be able to imagine the state the vegetables are and the best conditions to make vegetables grow super faster "you could achieve this using neural networks" ,then you build a space with those conditions.

Let's say after a time of mining data to determine the conditions of the vegetables and what they need, an AI should be able to turn that into a language. More like sign language really. When the plant's root behave in a certain way, it should know what that means or when the leafs bend or turn a certain color.

Imagine you are testing out a new vegetable chemical. When you add it, the root of the vegetables contracts, the leaf bends, the stem does something, and a chemical reaction occurs in the vegetable. It can and should be able to collect that data and print, representing the plant:
'No. This chemical is bad for me'

I said this cause I'm pretty sure that AI can achieve selfawareness, I'm a game developer "part time" and I've developed an AI Bot able to learn how to play games using neural networks and genetic algorithms. It was no different to how the neural process works in the brain.

dell sll the way
You're giving the wrong advice! It all boils down to what type of programming he'll be doing and whether it’s going to be his primary computer... Seems all he knows is the processor type.

@mosefin19! The graphics matters alot, but if you already know that your programming on either of the machines will be basically using a text editor, then uploading that to some other machine, you can get away with almost any of the two. If you’re planning on doing mathematical work on it, or simulations that require a lot of math, like architecture or other things that require tons of differential equations, you need the best chip you can find and tons of memory "check which one has that between the two". If you don’t really know what a differential equation is, have never once touched MATLAB in your life, and you’re really just planning to write web applications or something similarly simple, from a computational load point of view, then the good news is you almost certainly don’t need that much numerical crunch power, so either of the two will work. If you’re doing large builds that would take a long time, you also want good CPU and lots of memory. But don’t kid yourself and talk yourself into buying the Dell machine for that; instead, get serious and do the math.

Now this is super amazing. Please go ahead and acquire it. There are many ICT centres wasting away, with so many facilities in them. One of the reasons is that our institutions are not so much interested in breaking barriers. Except for some bodies like Jamb. That’s why private firms need to take control. The robotics lab I’m bringing could easily be set up or financed by govt. if they were keen on it.

Anyway I’ll give kudos to them, I received a Nitda scholarship for UK Masters during GEJ’s era. So I went for Advanced Control and Systems Engineering, Uni of Manchester. Had a distinction, got a UK govt scholarship for PhD with their robotics group. Had to obtain Nitda’s permission anyway. Finished it, spent quality time afterwards supporting a firm and providing solutions to Nuclear related challenges (using robotics). Now I found out something. Many times the UK relies on China for fabrication. Because the Chinese combine two great qualities: 1)they are cheaper, 2) thy never say anything is impossible. They have all the ideas and they make anything you ask for. So I’ve decided, you know what? Nigerians are like that, we can do better than that. What we need are facilities. I know Power Supply remains a challenge, but it is workable.

Please take good care of the solar facilities once you acquire them.

To your second remark, yes there are indeed a range of contributions from robotics and AI to farming. I’m very happy that you are already looking into it. If there are questions you have, if there are sensors you need, rugged semi-autonomous mini-vehicles, semi-autonomous weed control, controlled irrigation, these are areas we could collaborate.
That's pretty cool, but I'll only show interest in IoT-Agric/AI Farming, when a few lines of code and a crop management device can make my vegetables grow 10x faster. xD

You'll hav to prepare yourself for lifelong learning in this field. So,if you always need an instructor to put u str8,it will b hard/impossible to keep up.

Why r u switchng fields to web d? Y not stay nd build ur career in d present field? Is it the money? While d earnings mayb attractive remmber ,it's very labour intensive which is ironic since automation is supposed to reduce labour costs, but,in i.t each advancemnt simply give more crude tools for building d next pyramid.
The amount of code you'll have to write is always gonna be substantial.
The point he's making is, don't get into programming if you plan on half-assing your job. When you do that it means people like me have to get called in to fix your bad code. Don't just become a programmer because you want a six figure salary or higher. Do it because you are passionate about technology. There's nothing worse than performing a job that you hate, even if the money is good.

Hello Nairaland,

I want to keep a diary on my journey to programming. I would have opened the thread on the dairy section but I decided to do it here where I can get comments from time to time.

For over two years i have been dreaming of learning Python or any other language that can help me with the projects I have in mind. I have tried severally to learn on my own using videos from YouTube but I always lose concentration.

So last week I summoned courage to register with an IT firm for training and get a personal instructor.

They training will be from wed design to wed development and then Python. The web design is expected to last for 8 weeks, then after I migrate to web development which will last for another 8weeks. ...and the Python. Seems the training will be a long one grin

So my training started yesterday, 13/05/19. I was assigned an instructor who I can say is good. Our first class was pretty good.

We did a lot of story telling, some theory talks and then practicals. In our practical I was able to install an editor, create a folder in my system for the tutorial class, learnt about tags, attributes and values, etc then did some coding, viewed it on the browser and saved. Our class lasted for two hours and we dismissed for the day. My instructor gave me a task to always code or practice for at least 2 hours everyday.

At the end of the day, we scheduled to have three classes a week. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. But for this week, it will be Monday, Thursday and Friday. The classes could be adjusted to suit our personal schedule as he is also a busy person and I also have other jobs I do.

This dairy is just to boast my morale and help me keep up with the training. If you find time, please drop a word of encouragement for me.

I will be adding screenshots of my training/practice from time to time. For now, bye. My next class is on Thursday.

Modified
Pic: Screenshot of what we did on my first day in class.
Your first web page is a thing of beauty! Add it to your resume, you're sure to get a senior developer advocate job at Google or Microsoft.

I hope someone else (from one of the devices you didn't log-out from) haven't changed your password and phone number.
One of the adverse effects of borrowing people's phone to access your social media accounts. I find it kinda surprising people still do that. I thought that high level of retardness died along with 2GO and Mxit.

Searching how to hack websites or how to hack Wi-Fi etc..would definitely bring up some tutorial which you can follow and hack but you will never understand why.

So I advice you learn a programming language to open up your brain, learn how networking, ports and how HTTP protocol work.

Once you know a little on making, you can understand a lot on breaking. It will set you apart from the rest.
Pretty sure nobody will follow your advice! They all wanna hack but they wanna do it with the click of a button.
