Boot

In this case, the skins’ unwitting donors are unknown. In 1876,
Mr. Mahrenholz of H&A Mahrenholz in New York, a shoemaker
who enjoyed experimenting on various types of leather including
catfish and anaconda, procured the stomach, back, and buttock
skins of a pair of unidentified elderly men who’d died and been
previously dissected.

After tanning the pieces of skin in dog
manure and water – yes, there was a roaring trade in dog poop
gathered and sold to tanneries, it was called “pure” – he made a
handsome display boot and sent it to the Smithsonian Institute in
Washington, D.C. where it remains in their collection.

Wallet

In Morristown, New Jersey, in 1833, French immigrant Antoine
LeBlanc battered three people to death, stuffed a pillowcase full of
their valuables, and fled the blood splattered scene. He was
caught, convicted, and sentenced to hang. The judge also ordered
that the infamous killer’s body be dissected after death. According
to reports, LeBlanc was flayed, his skin tanned, and some made
into wallets and change purses. Other strips of the skin signed by
Sheriff Ludlow (the man who’d caught LeBlanc) were sold as
mementoes to curiosity seekers.

Long considered mere rumor,
the stories were proved plausible in 1979 when LeBlanc’s death
mask and what appeared to be a human leather wallet were
discovered in the house of the town’s unofficial historian and
collector of nineteenth century artifacts.

Calling Card Case

The nineteenth century body snatchers and murderers, William
Burke and his partner, William Hare, killed seventeen people in
Edinburgh, Scotland, and sold their bodies to a doctor for
dissection.

Burke was convicted and hanged, but didn’t go
peacefully to his grave. His body was dissected – his skeleton and
death mask are in the University of Edinburgh’s Anatomical
Museum – and other parts of his corpse made into useful items
such as the binding of a pocketbook, and a very elegant calling
card case made from the skin of his left hand, now on display at
the Police Information Centre on Edinburgh’s Royal Mile.

Book

One of the more famous items on this list. Today held in the
collection of the Boston Athenaeum library, the book has the title,
Hic Liber Waltonis Cute Compactus Est (this book ia bound in
Walton’s skin). James Allen – real name, George Walton – was a
notorious nineteenth century highwayman who died of
tuberculosis while incarcerated in 1837.

Before he died, he
requested that his skin be removed and used to bind a volume of
his autobiography to be presented to John Fenno, a former
robbery victim who’d bravely stood up to him after being shot.

The book remained in the Fenno family until donated to the
library.

Cigar Case

Henri Pranzini, the late nineteenth century French conman-turned-
murderer – nicknamed the “Splendid Darling” – made a splash in
more ways than one. He trial caused a worldwide sensation, and
he ended his days with a visit to the guillotine.

As a grotesque,
unconfirmed, but entirely possible coda, it’s said that bits of his
body were sold to collectors hungry for a piece of the infamous
killer, including one of his teeth knocked out for a woman who
had it set into a ring.

The report goes that a member of the Sûretè
(secret police) got hold of some of Pranzini’s skin as a souvenir du
jour, and had a cigar case made from the leather.

Waistcoat

During the Reign of Terror in an eighteenth century France torn
apart by revolution, Saint-Just rose to become a political leader,
military commander, and close friend of Robespierre as well as a
member of the Committee of Public Safety, which condemned
quite a few people to the guillotine.

In a story attributed to de la
Meuse’s “Anecdotes”, Saint-Just’s romantic advances toward a tall,
young, beautiful woman were spurned. In a hell-hath-no-fury
moment of madness, he had her arrested, executed, her skin
removed by a surgeon, cured by a tanner, and made into a
fashionable waistcoat which he wore every day.

Another version
of the story is that the woman was a thieving maid who got her
just desserts.

Drum

A fifteenth century, undefeated Hussite military commander, Jan
Ziska – real name Jan z Trocnova – wouldn’t let a little thing like
dying bring an end to his Protestant uprising against the Catholic
church. He’d already led his forces into battle to whip the Holy
Roman Emperor’s armies, invaded Austria and Moravia, and
participated in a civil war even after losing both his eyes!

Legendarily, when he lay dying from the plague while on the
march to Bohemia, Ziska ordered that after his death, his body
should be flayed, and his skin cured and stretched over a drum to
continue terrifying the enemy on the battlefield with his sheer
badassery.

Romance8 Things Your Body Does When You Are In Love by ExAngel007(op): 5:20pm On Sep 14, 2016
If human beings were unable to experience the beautiful and all-consuming sensation known as falling in love, we would have never created some of the world’s most powerful music, art, literature, or film.

We would also be missing out on one of the most profound facets of human existence.
Falling in love is confusing, scary, funny, and life-changing all at the same time.

Below are eight signs your body shows to prove that you are in love.

1. You become forgetful: When you’re smitten with someone, your brain releases oxytocin (often thought of as the love hormone), which can impair memory.
So that’s why you’ve been so absent-minded lately.

2. Your jealous side comes out: Turns out, you can’t help it if you get a little crazy when you see your soulmate talking to another woman love can make a person overprotective of his or her partner.

3. You get easily distracted: Since you’re constantly thinking about your partner, being in love can hurt your ability to concentrate and focus on specific tasks.

4. Your hearth slows down: Being in love affects your hormone levels, decreasing your blood pressure and heart rate.
You remember the first time you met him. The first time you kissed. Or you might even have the ticket stub from your first date.

Whatever it is, little moments with him become special, cherished memories. And you remember every detail.

5. Overcoming challenged make you closer: Going through some sort of adversity with another person tends to intensify romantic attraction.

6. Feeling out of control: When you are in love, you tend to feel that your passion is involuntary and uncontrollable. As you go through your day, you feel more alive and energetic, as if you have a constant adrenaline rush going through you. You feel more productive, like you can take on the world every single day.

7. You find yourself talking about him all the time: You can’t help it.
Someone says or does something that reminds you of him and before you even realize it you’re talking about him.

8. You lose track of time and no amount of time spent with him is ever enough: You could spend hours and hours talking on the phone to him or cuddling up together watching movies all day, but it wouldn’t matter. At the end of the day, it still only feels like you spent brief moments with him.

The above picture showing Nigerian soldiers allegedly molesting a
woman has generated outrage among Nigerians.

Operation Crocodile Smile which was launched by the army in
response to the resurgence of militancy in the Niger Delta region
has been viewed with apathy by people from the region.

However, the military authorities have said the operation is not to
harass, intimidate or threaten the communities but also to protect
them from the so call miscreant and oil thieves.

But a photo shard by the Niger Delta Avengers showing four
soldiers allegedly assaulting a helpless woman purportedly in the
Niger Delta has sparked outrage among Nigerians.

The photo was shared by the militants group on twitter with a
caption alleging that the only thing the soldiers are good at is
harassment of old men, women and innocent youths of the Niger

Nairaland GeneralMan Strips Unclad For N10,000 In Abuja by ExAngel007(op): 11:41am On Sep 08, 2016
Man strips naked for N10,000 in Mararaba.
A man, believed to be in his 30s, stripped naked in a broad day
light and walked about freely to earn N10,000 at Kabayi, Mararaba,
near Abuja.

The City News gathered that the drama started when the man,
whose identity was not disclosed, decided to prove to his friends
that he could do anything for money.

The man told his friends that he could walk naked for money but
they did not believe him, challenging him to walk his talk for
N10,000.

A witness said that the man surprisied his friends, pulled off his
clothes and walked on the streets naked while people trooped out
to watch the ‘absurdity.’

A witness, who pleaded anonymity, told our reporter: “I couldn’t
believe it but it is real. I saw people running to have a glimpse
while others, maybe scared, stayed away.”

The witness, however, said that the man was probably insane
while some residents said he may have been influenced by drugs.

Our reporter learnt that after the parade, the man was promptly
paid the agreed sum of N10,000 by his friends.

A pastor, living in the area, who did not want his name in print,
described the act as indecent, adding that it was a sign of the end
time, urging people to desist from such behaviour and avoid
wrath of God.

PhonesNCC Seals Nokia Office In Lekki, Lagos For Operating Without License by ExAngel007(op): 6:55am On Sep 08, 2016
For failing to pay N2million sales and installation license under category ‘A’ , the enforcement unit of the Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, yesterday sealed Nokia -Alcatel office located at CBC tower, Lekki, Lagos.

The Head, enforcement unit of the telecom regulatory authority, Salisu Abdul while speaking to Technology Journalists shortly after sealing the office said that the mobile equipment manufacturer has been operating in Nigeria without the license for many years.

He said that the license gives Nokia the power to operate wireless transmission equipment and sales of manufacturing of equipment among others, he said.

He informed that Nokia had applied for the license about three months ago but did not complete the process.

“It is criminal for any service provider to operate in the country without license. We have sealed the office until they comply. We have to charge them based on the number of years they have operated without license. We will use our discretion to charge them.

“The NCC is the sole regulator of the telecom sector in Nigeria and one of our functions is the issuance of telecom licenses. In one of our monitoring activities, we discovered that Nokia-Alcatel has not obtained the required authorization to operate their services in this country.

“As a matter of fairness and transparency, we decided to pay them a visit. We however discovered that they only applied for license about three months back and are yet to complete the process for the license. Basically, we have decided to seal off the premises of Nokia until they obtain the requisite authorization.

“The license is barely two million naira to obtain. We have sealed off the premises and we will not open it till they comply. The penalty is dependent on the number of years they’ve been on ground. We might have to levy a fine against Nokia before unsealing the premises.

“The license fee is two million naira. We all know that Nokia has been in this country for a long period of time and for any entity to provide a telecommunications service in this country, they ought to have consulted the NCC to obtain the requisite license. Nokia is involved in equipment manufacturing, supply and installation. What they ought to have obtained from the NCC is Sales and Installation license” he explained.

It would be recalled that Nokia had bought its smaller French rival Alcatel-Lucent in a 15.6 billion Euro ($16.6 billion) all-stock deal.

The combined entity, now called Nokia Corporation, has become the second largest mobile equipment manufacturer in the world with an estimated market share of 35%, close behind Swedish giant Ericsson which has an estimated 40 per cent share.

PoliticsPostpone Edo Election - Police, DSS Advise INEC by ExAngel007(op): 2:24pm On Sep 07, 2016
https://cdn1.dailypost.ng/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/dss1.jpg

The Nigeria Police Force, NPF, and the Department of State Services, DSS, have adational Electoral Commission, INEC, to postpone the governorship election in Edo state already scheduled for this Saturday, September 10.
The Force Public Relations Officer, Don Awunah, and an agent of the DSS‎, Garba Abdullahi, stated this at a press conference on Wednesday, citing security concerns as the reason for the request.

Reading out a statement on behalf of both agencies, Awunah said, “The Nigeria police and the DSS wish to inform the general public that credible intelligence availed to the agencies indicate plans by insurgent/extremist elements to attack vulnerable communities and soft targets with high population during the forthcoming Sallah celebrations between 12 and 13 September, 2016. Edo state is among the states being earmarked for these planned attacks by the extremists elements.

“It is in regard of this that we are appealing to INEC, which has legal duty to regulate elections in the country, to consider the need for possible postponement of the date of the election in Edo state in order to enable security agencies deal decisively with the envisaged terrorists threats.

“While the police/DSS remain mindful of the inconveniences this request may cause the various political stakeholders, it is our strong resolve that security agencies need not be distracted from ensuring a peaceful and secure Nigeria now and always.”
