A Gwagwalada Magistrates’ Court in Abuja sentenced two lovers, Mohammed Nazifi, 30, and Bilkisu Ibrahim, 25, to three months in prison each for committing adultery.
The police charged the couple with a one-count indictment of adultery, to which they both pleaded guilty.
Nazifi appealed to the court for leniency, stating that he is a married man with young children to care for.
Ibrahim also requested mercy, explaining that she has a three-year-old child and an elderly mother who depend on her.
Magistrate Olatunji Oladunmoye had previously remanded the defendants until they could provide a witness to attest to their good character. When they failed to do so, he proceeded to sentence them.
Oladunmoye sentenced both lovers to three months in prison, with an option to pay a fine of N25,000 each.
The magistrate emphasized that the purpose of the punishment was not to ruin the convicts but to reform them, adding that it would also serve as a deterrent to anyone considering similar actions.
Earlier, the prosecutor, Dabo Yakubu, told the court that the complainant, Mr Dayabe Abdullahi of Chibiri village, Kuje, Abuja, reported the matter at the Area Command, Gwagwalada, Abuja on Jan. 16.
Yakubu said that the convicts conspired and had sexual intercourse, and both confessed to the crime in their statements.
He said that the offence contravened the provisions of sections 387 and 388 of the Penal Code.
According to him, section 387 and 388 refers to a man or a woman subject to customary law where extra-marital sexual intercourse is recognised as a criminal offence.
“If the man or woman has sexual intercourse with anyone other than his spouse, he/she is guilty of adultery and shall be punished with imprisonment for a term.
“The term may extend to two years or with fine or with both,” he said.
Some residents of Sabo Market, Orile Igbon, along the Ogbomoso-Ilorin expressway in Oyo State allegedly att@cked firefighters that prevented them from siphoning fuel from a fallen tanker.
According to the Nigerian Tribune, the tanker, carrying 33,000 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), had suffered a tyre burst on Tuesday night, January 28, resulting in a spill and subsequent fire outbreak.
It was gathered that the officers of the Oyo State Fire Service, Ogbomoso branch, had responded to the emergency before the arrival of their colleagues in the Kwara State Fire Service, due to closeness to the scene of the incident.
The Head, Media and Publicity of the Kwara State Fire Service, Hassan Adekunle, who confirmed the incident in a statement, condemned the attack, adding that the firefighters were forced to seek refuge at a police station.
“On Tuesday, January 28, 2025, at 20:27 hours, the Kwara State Fire Service responded swiftly to a distress call reporting a tanker spill at Sabo Market, Orile Igbon, along the Ogbomoso Expressway in Oyo State. The tanker, carrying 33,000 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), had suffered a tyre burst, resulting in a spill and subsequent fire outbreak,” the statement read.
"Upon arrival, our firefighters immediately initiated mitigation efforts to contain the situation and prevent further escalation. Through their swift and coordinated response, over 10,000 litres of PMS were safely siphoned into another tanker, minimizing potential hazards. Fortunately, no lives were lost, and no injuries were reported.
“During our investigation, it was confirmed that the incident was triggered by a tyre burst, which led to the tanker spill and the resulting fire.”
“Prior to our arrival, the Oyo State Fire Service, Ogbomoso branch, had already responded to the emergency.
“However, it is deeply concerning that their personnel were violently attacked with stones, leading to severe damage to their fire truck, including a shattered windscreen. In the face of this hostility, they were forced to seek refuge at Owode Police Station," he lamented.
The Director of the Kwara state fire service also condemned such attacks on firefighters and urged the public to desist from obstructing emergency responders.
“Any individual found guilty of assaulting fire service personnel will face the full weight of the law. Firefighters risk their lives to protect people and property, and any act of violence against them is unacceptable,” he said.

President Vladimir Putin has said he is ready to discuss the war in Ukraine with US President Donald Trump after he warned his Russian counterpart to end the war quickly, or else face “high levels of taxes, tariffs and sanctions.”
In his first comments, since Trump issued the threats, Putin said he's ready for negotiations. Putin told a Russian state TV journalist: “We believe the current president’s statements about his readiness to work together. We are always open to this and ready for negotiations.
“It would be better for us to meet, based on the realities of today, to talk calmly.”
Putin went on to describe his relationship with Trump as “businesslike, pragmatic and trustworthy”.
'He is not only a smart person, but a pragmatic person,' Putin told state media of his American counterpart.
'I have a hard time imagining there will be decisions taken that are detrimental to the American economy.
He added that negotiating with Ukraine was complicated by the fact that its president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, had signed a decree preventing him from conducting talks with Putin. Putin also said the war in Ukraine could have been averted had Donald Trump not been 'robbed of the election' in 2020.
'I cannot but agree with him that if he had been president if his victory had not been stolen from him in 2020, then perhaps there would not have been the crisis in Ukraine that arose in 2022,' the Russian president said.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations, DCI, in a statement on Friday, January 21, 2025, said Stephen Mugambi Colbe and his co-conspirators had approached the victim, pretending that they were in a position to hire a private jet to transport unspecified investment funds from Kenya to Nigeria.
“Hawkshaws drawn from DCI Headquarters have arrested Stephen Mugambi Colbert who earlier this month and with others who are yet to be arrested conspired to defraud a Nigerian national a sum of 150 million Naira,” the statement read.
"While presenting themselves as genuine business men, Mugambi and his cabal of malefactors approached the victim pretending that they were in a position to hire a private jet to transport unspecified investments funds from Kenya to Nigeria, a fact they knew to be false.
"Unbeknownst of the foul play, the victim made the payment amounting to 150 million naira only to realize later that he had been played when he could no longer reach Stephen or his cabal of friends in crime.
"Having burnt his fingers, the foreign national approached the DCI seeking for help where a manhunt for the snake oil merchants was launched leading to the arrest of Mugambi.
"Whereas his accomplices narrowly escaped the sherlocks’ dragnet, it is just a matter of time before they are smoked out of their hideout and brought to book.
"The DCI strongly warns that no efforts will be spared in dealing with such fraudsters. Further, we caution members of the public to do their due diligence in establishing the credibility of such businesses to avoid losing their hard earned money.
“Additionally, the public is also cautioned of an emerging trend where fraudsters have been found to be using crypto currency as a means of exchange outside the formal financial system in a bid to evade detection.”
I don’t believe in aid. I’d rather carry my poverty with dignity - VP Kashim Shettima says at World Economic Forum
Vice President Kashim Shettima says he is not in support of the idea of foreign aid being the solution to economic challenges in the global south. Shettima said this when he spoke at the World Economic Forum (WEF) 2025 in Davos-Klosters, Switzerland on Thursday, January 23.
During a panel discussion, Shettima highlighted the need to invest in education, gender empowerment, and innovation to re-engineer African societies.
He underscored the importance of African nations leveraging their resources to shape global growth. The vice president added that Nigeria’s economic crisis presents a unique opportunity to erect a solid foundation.
“Yes, we have challenges. But those challenges are also pregnant with opportunities to re-engineer our society and build back better. The crisis has given us a unique opportunity, a unique window to invest in people. Especially on education, gender empowerment initiatives, on smart agriculture, and leapfrog our economies into the post-industrial revolution.
I don’t believe in aid. I believe in partnership. I would rather carry my poverty with dignity and deal with people, nations, and companies on a pedestal of equality, not a master-servant relationship.
My continent is the richest in the world, and the trajectory of global growth is facing Africa. And Nigeria will make or mar that transition.
So I move in with confidence, with cautious optimism, with hope for a better tomorrow. But most importantly, I believe that the youth of Africa are the drivers of change in Africa” he said.
While appearing on Rubbin Minds, the Nigerian disk jockey disclosed that his health struggles began in 2020 when he was in Nigeria during the lockdown. He revealed that he lost his eyesight in one eye and underwent surgery to restore his vision.
He said in addition to his eye problems, he was also diagnosed with chronic kidney disease. He said he underwent dialysis and eventually had a kidney transplant in 2022.
“Maybe I caused it myself because, in 2019, I decided to spend more time outside Nigeria. I had lived all my life in Lagos and wanted to explore other parts of the world—Europe, America, everywhere,” he said.
“But in 2020, I started experiencing health issues. Due to the travel restrictions at the time, I remained in Nigeria. I lost my sight and had to undergo surgery to regain it. After recovering, I felt the need to stick to my plan of living elsewhere for a while, so I relocated to the U.S. While there, I was diagnosed with chronic kidney disease.
“I stayed in the U.S. for a while and was on dialysis. Eventually, I returned to Nigeria and underwent a kidney transplant. After the procedure, I chose to take time off to fully recover. Once I was discharged, I left Nigeria again.
“Even while abroad, I continued DJing across America and Europe. However, I decided it was time to return home, so I came back to Nigeria in December.”
This was disclosed in a statement released on Monday, Jan. 20, by the Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, via his account on X (formerly Twitter).
Edafe shared a video of the suspects being interrogated and he wrote: "The boyfriend of the girl deceived one of the triplets, who is a sister to his girlfriend, and took her to meet two unknown men, where they used a machete to kill the little girl, who is 10 years old. They promised to give him ₦200,000, but even the ₦200,000, he didn’t see."
In the video, Edafe explained that the female suspect is the elder sister of 10-year-old triplets and they are in her care.
Her boyfriend, the male suspect named Precious, 20, reportedly approached the female suspect to beg for one of the triplets. The girlfriend refused to release any of her 10-year-old sisters to him, so he went behind her and took one of them.
He then handed the girl to two men who had promised to give him N200,000 if he brought them a child.
After handing the child over to them, Precious said he watched them butch£r her with a cutlass. He said he felt "pain" when he saw her get k!lled.
When the girlfriend noticed one of the triplets was missing, she raised the alarm and made it clear that her boyfriend had asked for one of the girls.
Locals found the boyfriend and pounced on him but police intervened, stopping the jungle justice being meted out on him.
Precious was arrested and his girlfriend was also detained because she failed to raise the alarm the moment he asked her for one of her sisters.
As for the two men who Precious gave the child, they are still at large.

A woman in France has been scammed after she became convinced that she was in a relationship with Hollywood actor, Brad Pitt.
The 53-year-old victim, who gave her name as Anne, is the latest woman to fall for the "Fake Brad Pitt Scam" after several cases were reported in Spain in 2024.
The interior designer told French channel TF1 that the nightmare began in September 2023 when she received a message on Instagram from “Jane Etta Pitt, the actor’s mother – or so they claimed.” Their chat quickly turned to Brad Pitt and how the two would make a great romantic match.
Anne was told by the fraudster posing as Brad's mum: "It is a woman like you that my son needs." The very next day that another account contacted her, writing: "Hello Anne, my mother told me a lot about you. I would like to know more."
At first, she suspected it may be a scam, but she soon fell in the fraudster’s tangled web of deceit.
Anne recalled being flabbergasted that she was actually speaking with Brad Pitt, adding: "At first, I thought it was fake, but I could not understand what was happening to me.
"After that, we would contact each other every day and we became friends."
At the time, she was going through a rough patch in her personal life and her relationship with a millionaire entrepreneur, 19 years her senior, was in tatters, newspaper Sud Ouest reported.
Posing as Brad Pitt, the fraudster sent her poems and songs and AI photos to look like the actor.
"He knew how to talk to women, it was always very well done," Anne said.
He started buying her luxurious bags, but told her that she had to pay for customs. This is how Anne lost her first €9,000 (£7,580).
Eventually, the scammer, still impersonating the actor, claimed that he had kidney cancer and needed money for treatment.
He told Anne that his ex-wife Angelina Jolie had frozen his bank accounts and he had no access to his fortune.
Fake photos of Brad Pitt in a hospital bed, strapped to an IV machine, soon followed and the victim was convinced.
The Federal Ministry of Power is proposing to spend N8 billion to orient Nigerians on prompt payment of electricity bills in 2025.
The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, disclosed this while defending the ministry’s budget before the National Assembly joint committee on power on Monday, January 13.
According to Adelabu, the advocacy would be done through social, digital and print mediums in order to reach all Nigerians. Adelabu explained that many Nigerians need orientation to realise that the power sector is a national asset that needs protection.
“We are a people of over 200 million strength. So we need to go through all the loopholes, through social media, throughdigital media, through the print media, to actually orientate and do this advocacy. So we have N8 billion.
In terms of advocacy, we believe that our people need to be re-educated. They need to be re-orientated to know that the power assets are national assets, and we should all jointly own it.
Our people need to know that they should avoid power theft. When they see something, they must say something. Our people need to know that they must pay their bills regularly.
All these need to be passed across. We believe that the power sector needs to do a lot of advocacy, re-orientation and re- education of our people''
The National Bureau of Statistics, NBS, says that illegal and hidden activities like prost!tuition and drug peddling will now be included in the country’s Gross Domestic Product, GDP.
Vanguard reports that NBS disclosed this at a sensitization workshop on GDP and Consumer Price Index, CPI Rebasing organised in collaboration with the Nigerian Economic Summit Group (NESG).
Elaborating on the inclusion of illegal and hidden activities in the classification of economic activities for computation of the GDP, the Head of National Accounts, NBS, Dr Baba Madu, said; ‘’Illegal activities will be in line with the national best practices, that is System of National Accounts, SNA 2008.
If you are into, for instance, drugs, there are some countries, it is this drug that is driving their economy. It is illegal here because there is no legal backing. Also prostitution, they also earn income. Some even live bigger than those in the formal sector.
The SNA does not say no to these, it is we. But the challenge is the legal backing and how do we get the data.
And then, of course, the hidden economy. If I ask you, how much do you earn in a month, you will lower your income. Or if somebody is selling provision in a store, and before you know it he started selling India hemp. Those are the things we are seeing.
There are challenges all over the world. But the beauty is that they are less than 3.0 to 3.5% of the GDP.”

Hadiza El-Rufai, wife of the former governor of Kaduna State Nasir El-Rufai, has urged parents and guardians not to give up on their children, revealing that she wasn’t a ‘good student’ while growing up.
Mrs El-Rufai stated this in a post on X in reaction to the viral video of a teacher, Stella Nwadigo, assaulting a three-year-old pupil, Abayomi Michael, during a class lesson.
The footage shows the female teacher at Christ Mitots School located in the Ikorodu area of Lagos, violently smacking the young child for struggling with the lesson. The video sparked widespread outrage, leading to the teacher’s subsequent arrest on Wednesday.
To encourage parents and guardians, El-Rufai’s wife published her 1964 report from Provincial Girls’ School in Kano which showed she struggled at school at first.
The former Kaduna First Lady also published a letter from the management of Shekara Girls Primary School in Kano asking her parents to pay her school fees (£2) for the 1970/71 session.
One of her results showed she scored five out of 50.
The Oxford English Dictionary (OED) has added a new set of Nigerian words to its diction, giving the global community an opportunity to learn about the country’s rich cultural heritage.
The new words reflect the everyday life of an average Nigerian and the exciting street mannerisms and Pidgin English, which are fast gaining acceptability across Africa and beyond. Reflecting ethnic nationalities as well as demographics, the new entries also highlight Nigeria’s cultural diversity. Japa, 419, agbero, abi, area boy, yahoo boy, yahoo, Edo, Kanuri, and, cross-carpet, kobo, naija and suya are among the new words unveiled yesterday.
Some of the entries take both noun and verb forms. For instance, OED takes japa as both a noun and a verb. Jand also comes in both parts of speech. This time, the entries also come with pronunciations to support non-Nigerians who are interested in studying the dictions.
Dr Kingsley Ugwuanyi, who consults for OED and provides vocal support, told The Guardian that the editors used corpora to determine words that are more frequently and widely used across the country.
“So, the criteria include frequency, widespread use, age (generally words that have been in use for zero to 10 years) and the social significance of the words,” he explained.
Announcing the list on LinkedIn, Ugwuanyi said: “This time, I not only drafted most of the words but also had the incredible opportunity to provide their pronunciations. So, when you explore the OED online and click on the pronunciations, you will hear my voice bringing these words to life.” In 2020, OED added 29 entries peculiar to Nigeria, including danfo, okada, next tomorrow and mama put.

Kyari made a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday, Jan. 8, to mark his 60th birthday.
He also expressed gratitude to former President Muhammadu Buhari and President Bola Tinubu for the privilege of serving as the last NNPC GMD and the first CEO of NNPC Ltd.
He wrote:
"Allah, by his grace, spared my life to this exceptional day, making it my 60th year from birth, even much earlier on the Hijri calendar.
"I am profoundly grateful to my country for giving me the opportunity to grow from an Almajiri (Tsangaya) school pupil to become the CEO of Africa’s largest energy company.
"Even more particular, I deeply appreciate the exceptional privilege given to me by Presidents Muhammadu Buhari and Bola Ahmed Tinubu to serve as the last GMD of the NNPC and the pioneer CEO of the NNPC Ltd.
"Reflecting backwards alone can’t account for the profoundly eventful life I spent to this date, walking through good and bad times, travails and triumphs, pains and happiness, fails and successes and many more that only the sufficiency of Allah will explain.
"At this milestone, I feel the obligation to serve with even greater conviction and with elevated expectation of eternal recompense so deeply pleasing. I am hugely indebted to my family for being nearly absent for most of my later years serving our nation and the common good.
"My deep appreciation to my family, friends and associates, my colleagues at work and my teachers (western and of Almajiri extractions), and many unmentioned people who account for many of my accomplishments, unconditional support and my overall wellbeing.
"This is a turning point, and I seek forgiveness from anyone I might have hurt unintentionally or unavoidably."
Doctors treating the woman suggested her Covid vaccine may have triggered pseudoangiomatous stromal hyperplasia (PASH), an overgrowth of cells that usually causes benign lumps in the breasts and has only ever been seen in around 200 patients.
This is the first-ever case linking PASH to a vaccine, though the experts cautioned that it cannot be proven to be the culprit.
It's unclear exactly how the vaccine may have triggered the growth, but some case studies have suggested Covid vaccines may trigger an immune response leading to temporarily swollen lymph nodes, which makes breasts seem larger.
The experts, from the University of Toronto, wrote in a medical journal last month: "This case is the first to demonstrate a temporal association between PASH-associated gigantomastia and a vaccine."
Experts have also noted that adverse reactions to Covid vaccines are extremely rare, and the benefits of getting the shot outweigh potential complications.
The woman in the case study had no underlying conditions. While her breasts seemed swollen and saggy, there were no masses.
An ultrasound and CT scan slightly swollen lymph nodes around the woman's armpits and dense blood vessels, which they believe was from the enlarged breast tissue.
PASH is a benign breast condition found in less than 200 people worldwide since it was first described in 1986.
It normally causes non-cancerous lesions breast lumps made from cells called myofibroblasts.
However, there are only 20 known cases of PASH causing extreme breast growth, and none have previously been associated with vaccines.
It's unclear how the vaccine may have triggered the woman's breast growth.
2021, researchers at the University of Pennsylvania found that Covid vaccines could lead to swollen lymph nodes, leading to abnormal findings on mammograms and breast ultrasounds.
However, they cautioned that this "is a normal reaction to the Covid vaccine, and nothing to worry about."
The experts in Toronto said further research is needed on the potential link between gigantomastia and Covid vaccines.
The woman underwent a breast reduction 11 months after her initial Covid vaccine, bringing her down to a double D cup. Doctors removed 8lbs of tissue during the surgery.
Though she hasn't experienced any further growth, her breasts are now asymmetrical. She is considering further surgeries to correct this and get her breasts back to their normal size.
North Koreans have reportedly been banned from eating hot dogs as part of a crackdown on Western culture’ infiltrating the country.
Dictator Kim Jong Un has declared that serving hotdogs was an act of treason, The Sun reports, amid the rising popularity of a South Korean dish inspired by the US.
People caught selling or cooking hot dogs face the prospect of time in the country’s infamous labour camps, where it has also been decreed that divorcees could also be jailed.
As part of the regime’s efforts to quash capitalistc culture among citizens, it has forbidden the sale of budae-jjigae – a dish imported from its neighbour South Korea.
The spicy Korean-American hotpot includes hot dogs or spam among its ingredients.
It was born from meats discarded by US soldiers based in the region during the Korean War of the 1950s, with hungry locals using the items to create stews.
The dish is believed to have crossed the border into North Korea sometime in 2017, decades after it was invented in the south.
Radio Free Asia (RFA) reported in November that authorities had now banned the dish, along with steamed rice cakes tteokbokki, also a popular street food in its neighbouring nation.
A vendor in the northern province of Ryanggang told The Sun: “Sales of budae-jjigae in the market have stopped.
“The police and market management have said anyone caught selling it will be shut down.” Reports also emerged in December of citizens claiming divorcees in North Korea faced one to six months in labour camps for their “crimes.”
Divorce is frowned upon in the communist nation as it is considered an anti-socialist act, with the government required to sign off on any legal separations.
A divorced woman who claimed to have served three months of labour in South Pyongan province told RFA that women received harsher sentences than men.
“There are about 80 women, and 40 men imprisoned in the county labour training camp,” she said.
“About 30 men and women were imprisoned due to divorce decrees, and the women’s sentences were longer.”
