A top member of Boko Haram sect was arrested on Saturday, in Ikorodu, Lagos. The suspect is one of the fleeing insurgents recently dislodged from Sambisa forest in Borno State. The Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai disclosed this on Sunday, December 25th, during the re-opening of Maiduguri- Gubio-Damasak and Maiduguri-Monguno-Baga, that were closed since 2014 at the height of the activities of the insurgents. Buratai charged troops to pursue the fleeing Boko Haram terrorists and intercept them, adding that counter insurgency efforts would be sustained to prevent re-grouping of insurgents. "You must maintain the momentum of the operation. We must pursue the terrorists wherever they are. We must not allow them to regroup," the army chief said. He said in spite of the take over of the terrorists last strong hold in the Sambisa forest, they have no time to waste. The Chief of Army Staff cautioned against extortion of motorists who would ply the road. He also advised against inducement of soldiers, maintaining that troops are well taken care of by the Army command. Buratai described the seven-year fight against the Boko Haram terrorists as “quite sober and touchy”, adding that a number of officers and soldiers had lost their lives in the war. At least 10 persons have been confirmed dead with several houses razed as gunmen attacked as Goska village in Kaninkon Chiefdom of Jema’a in Kaduna State despite of 24 hours curfew imposed on three Kaduna State Local Government Areas of Jema’a, Kaura and Zango Kataf. According to a local, “the Fulani herdsmen had earlier informed the community that they will launch an attack on it. We didn’t take it seriously until when they came at about 5pm on Saturday. They encircled the village and started shooting anybody at sight. “That shooting continued through the night. They killed one of the daughters of two term member of Kaduna State House of Assembly and a one time Chairman of Jema’a local government, Gideon Yakubu Morik and burnt his house and several other houses. Only a very few houses are left. As I speak with you, we can still hear the gunshot. “It was very pathetic. It was a serious attack. While that was ongoing, they released their cattle to feed on beans yet to be harvested. We tried to call security people around who were outskirt of the village but we discovered that they don’t have bullets. So, we are only in the hand of God,” the local was quoted by The Nation. Speaking on the attack, governor Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai condemned the attack, describing it as inhumane and handiwork of forces of darkness. El-Rufai empathised with the families that lost their loved ones and charged security agencies to redouble their efforts. According to Opuiyo, the DSS came across the plot during its regular intelligence gathering duties. The protests, he said, were aimed at specific government agencies and were to paint a poor image of the government. The Sultan of Sokoto, Mohammed Saad Abubakar has dismissed assumptions that the Fulani are responsible for the spate of gruesome killings across the country. The Sultan, who spoke on backdrop of recent clashes between suspected Fulani herdsmen and host communities, noted that the Fulani are not murderers. Saad Abubakar made the statement recently during his visit to Enugu as special guest of the state government, the Sun reports. He called for love and peaceful co-existence between herdsmen and host communities. The Sultan however, stated that if anyone committed a crime, such person should be identified as a criminal and made to face the full weight of the law. He said: “Such a person is a criminal and must be so identified, whether he is a Fulani or an Igbo. Unless we identify them, we cannot overcome this menace. “We have lived with Fulani for many years, many of them don’t know anywhere except Igboland for centuries. Is it possible that these same people will take up arms against the same people they have lived with? “It’s the duty of all of us to fish out these criminals; it’s our duty to get these criminals and make them face the law." Saad Abubakar said he will not support the taking of life because Muslims know what the Almighty Allah says about killing of a single soul without recourse to law. The Sultan said if anyone kills another, such person supposed to be killed but not through jungle justice. He said the killer must be sentenced to death before being killed. “For anyone to kill in the name of religion is wrong because no religion teaches that. “To know that a problem exists is part of the solution, the second is to gather as one people and tackle these challenges. “There are many good people around and few bad ones. We must not allow the few bad ones to continue to spoil our relationship.
