NYSC bars poly graduates without proof of 1-year mandatory IT experience from entering camp The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has started implementing the directive issued earlier that it will no longer accept graduates of polytechnics and monotechnics who cannot provide evidence of completing the mandatory one-year Industrial Training (IT) program. In July 2024, a circular signed by the Director, Corps Mob, Isah Walida Siddique, on behalf of the NYSC Director General, warned that prospective corps members will have to show proof that they partook in the 1-year mandatory IT to commence NYSC. Later, in an interview in August, NYSC Coordinator in Lagos State, Mrs. Yetunde Baderinwa, stated the decision is aimed at promoting the sanctity of Nigeria's education system. Baderinwa revealed that a circular has been issued to this effect, and the new directive will take effect from the next orientation camp. Now, as a new batch of prospective corps members head to camp, HND holders without IT certificates are being turned back from NYSC orientation camps across the country. The acting Director of Press and Public Relations, NYSC, Mrs Caroline Lembu, who spoke to Punch on Thursday, August 29, explained that a certificate of industrial training is one of the requirements for polytechnic graduates to participate in the one-year national youth service. Lembu said: "That is part of the requirement for obtaining an HND Certificate, isn’t it? So, it’s just that certificate. That is one of the documents they are required to present at the camp. They would get admission into the camp, but whether they would be registered or not is the issue. You know, everyone is admitted to the camp, and your documents are scrutinised. But what happens is that that is the requirement." Lembu added: "It is a prerequisite for getting the HND certificate. That is just the certificate they are asking for. They are not being rejected, they are just supposed to present it." In Osun State, the NYSC Public Relations Officer in the state, Funmi Okundaye, said the policy was being implemented. "They were not evicted from camp. It is not an issue in the Osun camp alone. It is a national policy to sanitise the education sector. We sent those who don’t have IT letters back home to bring it. It is part of the registration materials they must bring to camp," Okundaye said. "Once they bring their IT letters from where they observed it, they will be allowed to return to the camp." In Niger State, the NYSC spokesman in the state, Sam Oga, confirmed that polytechnic graduates without IT certificates were not being registered. "Yes, we are implementing it. The NYSC HND candidates are not allowed into the camp without proof of IT. Until we get a counter directive they will not be allowed into the the camp," Oga said. The policy was also implemented in Kano State, where an NYSC official, who spoke to Punch on condition of anonymity, said, “This is a directive from the NYSC headquarters in Abuja. So, we are just complying with the order.” https://alexis.lindaikejisblog.com/photos/shares/Screenshot_20240830_094200_Facebook_1725008036.jpg https://www.lindaikejisblog.com/2024/8/nysc-bars-poly-graduates-without-proof-of-1-year-mandatory-it-experience-from-entering-camp.html |

The International Criminal Police Organisation (Interpol) says it has arrested 300 suspected members. The suspects were arrested in 21 countries between April and July 2024 during Operation Jackal III. has developed a dreadful reputation in Nigeria over the years, leaving a trail of killings and criminal activities in its wake. Many of its members are recruited while in university. BBC quoted Tomonobu Kaya, a senior official at Interpol’s Financial Crime and Anti-Corruption Centre, as saying that the operation dealt a “major blow” to the criminal enterprise. Kaya said the group has been linked to a number of multi-million dollar online scams. “They are very organised and very structured,” he said. “These criminal syndicates are early adopters of new technologies. A lot of fintech developments make it really easy to illegally move money around the world. “We need to have data and to collate our findings from these countries to help build a picture of their modus operandi.” The broadcaster said Operation Jackal III led to seizure of $3 million of illegal assets and the freezing of more than 700 bank accounts linked to members of the group. Despite a series of crackdowns, has managed to continue in its criminal activities. https://www.thecable.ng/interpol-arrests-300-suspected--members-in-21-countries/amp/ |

Zainab Bayero, daughter of the late Emir of Kano, Ado Bayero, has reached out to Governor Abba Yusuf for assistance, seeking both housing and financial support for her family. he request comes nearly a decade after the death of her father, who was the longest-serving emir in Kano’s history. Ado Bayero, who passed away at the age of 83 on June 6, 2014, was a revered leader, having ruled from 1963 until his death. He was laid to rest according to Islamic rites in Kano, leaving behind a legacy that is still remembered today. In an interview with Premium Times on Friday, August 23, Zainab Bayero opened up about the difficulties her family has been enduring since her father’s passing. She explained that she, along with her mother and brother, have been struggling to make ends meet and are in need of support. She said; “I know a lot of people will be very surprised that the daughter of an Emir is in this kind of situation. Being born into a polygamous home, there are a lot of intrigues and divisions. The whole thing started when my daddy died; his death left a void within the family. Everyone was alone, especially me, my mother and my younger brother. We were not given a part of his (my father’s) estate, so we were left in a terrible situation, which has been going on for ten years. “We’ve been trying to survive and find ways to get back on our feet and return to a proper environment—to have a home, not renting or moving from hotel to hotel. We would love the governor to help us buy or give us money to get a house here in Lagos. Since our father’s death, we believe it would be better to relocate to Lagos and start a new life for safety and freedom and to live our lives the way we want. However, with the current skyrocketing prices, we’re looking at around N150 million for a house in Lagos.” Additionally, Zainab acknowledged that Mr Yusuf had assisted them in June but stated that it was insufficient to address their ongoing struggles. She said the financial support for housing and other expenses was insufficient to alleviate their financial burdens, and they have returned to the same situation. She also appealed to President Bola Tinubu, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, and compassionate Nigerians for support. Zainab said; “I reached out to the governor in a publication on 23 June when my mother, brother, and I were staying at a hotel in VI. We haven’t had an apartment since last year and were behind on hotel bills. The next day, he sent someone to settle the bills and asked, ‘What do we need?’ We told him we wanted a home, for my brother to return to school, and something to do. “He (the governor through his representative) gave us some money, but we didn’t meet the governor in person; it was all through an intermediary. We don’t know the governor’s plans, but he mentioned wanting to buy us a house in Kano. I told him, no, we want a house in Lagos. What he gave us wasn’t enough to rent a house for a year. So, we’ve been trying to find a place, but the funds aren’t sufficient. We’re in the same situation again.” More so, she said their hotel booking has expired, and they’ll have to check out on Saturday, August 23, with no place to stay. https://www.facebook.com/100064510009626/posts pfbid0gfbcodenUTRD4hQy9euDi6v1nBksXcC3DpDemFjqFDMhCjp6eDJ2dUUZTYB5sGubl/?app=fbl

A pornography video clip, on Thursday, interrupted an investors’ call organised by Nigeria’s Debt Management Office (DMO) to secure dollar investments. The incident occurred during a hybrid roadshow for the federal government’s dollar-denominated domestic bond. The incident, which came across as bizarre and embarrassing, has been linked to “hackers”. “They hacked and showed porn on the Zoom call Nigeria had with investors for dollar funding?” an X user had posted on the social media platform on Thursday. The DMO is yet to issue a statement on the matter. However, an attendee who also confirmed the event to TheCable, said the video played for 10 seconds before the online session was disconnected. The source said the video showed a man engaging in a sexual activity with an anal kit. He said the act “was loud and the graphic nature of the content caught everyone off guard”. The meeting, which was aimed at discussing the prospects of the federal government’s $500 million domestic bond, had in attendance investors, analysts, bank officials, and government stakeholders. The bond is set to be issued on August 19, the government said. Speaking at the event, Wale Edun, minister of finance and coordinating minister of the economy, said the country, alongside its financial advisors, is ready to launch the bond. Edun said the initiative is aimed at raising a minimum of $500 million from both local and international investors, marking a significant step in Nigeria’s ongoing economic reform and development efforts. Edun stated further that the bond issuance, which is set to leverage the Nigerian financial system, including the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the banking system, and investment bankers; represents a critical effort to attract foreign currency held by Nigerians abroad, as well as other international investors who believe in the macroeconomic reform initiatives spearheaded by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. “In the financial market, you never know. When you wake up and you see an event that helps the issue, you will take advantage of it,” the minister said. “But we can assume that we are imminently about to launch.” Edun also said the government is “eagerly looking forward to not just the funds but the experience of Nigerians taking leadership in this all-important area”. https://www.thecable.ng/pornography-video-clip-interrupts-nigerias-investors-call-on-dollar-funding/amp/ |

A French court has authorized the seizure of three presidential jets linked to the Federal Government of Nigeria as part of a legal battle involving Zhongshan, a Chinese company. The company had a business dispute with the Ogun State government, which led to this significant legal action, sources familiar with the matter have told Premium Times. The three seized jets include a Dassault Falcon 7X at Le Bourget airport in Paris, a Boeing 737, and an Airbus 330 located at Basel- Mulhouse airport in Switzerland. All three aircraft are part of Nigeria’s presidential air fleet and are currently undergoing maintenance. Two of the jets were recently put up for sale, while the Airbus a330 was purchased by Nigeria but had not yet been delivered. The Nigerian government reportedly paid over $ 100 million for the Airbus. The seizure stems from a 2016 decision by the Ogun State government to revoke Zhongshan’s export processing zone management contract. Following this revocation, an independent arbitral tribunal, chaired by a former UK Supreme Court President, awarded Zhongshan $ 74.5 million in compensation. However, the Ogun State government has yet to honor the award, leading Zhongshan to seek enforcement against Nigerian assets abroad. The French court’s order prohibits the movement, sale, or purchase of the seized jets until the $74.5 million compensation is paid to Zhongshan. Bailiffs have already served legal papers for each aircraft, signaling a significant escalation in the ongoing legal dispute. This development follows a similar incident in which Nigerian-owned properties in Liverpool, England, were seized by a UK court in connection with the same dispute. Zhongshan secured charging orders against two properties in Liverpool— 15 Aigburth Hall Road and Beech Lodge, 49 Calderstones Road— which are estimated to be worth between £1.3 million and £1.7 million. https://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/724391-three-nigerian-presidential-jets-seized-abroad-as-ogun-state-chinese-firm-battle.html |
The Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) has said that each of the 109 senators occupying legislative seats in thered chamber earn ₦1,063,860 salary and allowances per month. In a statement released, the RMAFC chairman, M. B. Shehu, said he needed to give the clarification “in view of the recent statement made by Mr. Shehu Sani, a former Senator of the Federal Republic who was reported to have disclosed to the public that each Senator collects monthly running cost of ₦13.5 M in addition to the monthly ₦750, 000.00 prescribed by the Commission”. Shehu said RMAFC does not have the constitutional powers to enforce compliance with the proper implementation of the remuneration package of lawmakers. “This lacuna is, however, being addressed by the National Assembly,” he said The commission gave the breakdown of the salary and allowances of each senator as: Basic Salary – ₦168,866:70; Motor Vehicle Fuelling and Maintenance Allowance – ₦126,650:00; Personal Assistant – ₦42,216:66; Domestic Staff - ₦126,650:00; Entertainment – ₦50,660:00; Utilities – ₦50,660:00; Newspapers/Periodicals – ₦25,330:00; Wardrobe – ₦42,216,66:00; House Maintenance – ₦8,443.33:00 and Constituency Allowance – ₦422,166:66; respectively. The RMAFC chief said some allowances are regular while others are non-regular. “Regular allowances are paid regularly with basic salary while non-regular allowances are paid as when due. “For instance, Furniture allowance (₦6,079,200:00) and Severance Gratuity (₦6,079,200:00) are paid once in every tenure and Vehicle allowance (₦8,105,600:00) which is optional is a loan which the beneficiary has to pay before leaving office,” he added. Shehu said that aside from the president, vice president, senate president, and speaker of the House of Representatives, all public and legislative officers are no longer provided with housing, as was the case in the past. On Sunday, the Senate tackled former President Olusegun Obasanjo over his comment that lawmakers in both chambers of the National Assembly (NASS) fix their salaries. Obasanjo had in a recent interview said it was “immoral” for federal lawmakers to determine their salaries and allowances. Instead, he said, the RMAFC should be saddled with this responsibility. In reaction to Obasanjo's comment, the Senate spokesman, Yemi Adaramodu, challenged anyone with credible evidence to present contrary facts, describing any suggestion that tqhe National Assembly fixes its salaries as “uncharitable and satanic.” Adaramodu said the red chamber only receives the salary allocated to it by the RMAFC in line with the constitution. https://www.lindaikejisblog.com/2024/8/each-senator-earns-n1m-per-month-revenue-commission-says-2.html |
