For little elaboration, answeing vulcan. The calculation is correct.

First you can use fish net or sleeve to get your fishes for sampling without killing anyone

For the calculation, lets break it to small bits, the reason why 1000 is down is simply because 20 grams to kilogram =20/1000. Hence the 20 is up and 1000 down.

The reason why 100 is down is because it is a percentage. 5% used is 5/100. That is the reason 5 is up and 100 is down.

And the last up is 2000, the number of the stock rate used. There is no need to put it over anything because it is a stand alone factor.

Nothing else to emphasis, it have been broken down to pieces.

Let me help you clarify

First the number of fishes=2000
Grams of each=20 grams
Body percentage used= 5% (Feeding)

Now, 1000grams =1kg

20x2000x5(at the top as shown and quoted)

1000x100(at the button as shown and quoted)
I believe you can see the slash sign that means divided?

20x2000x5=200,000(@ top)
1000x100=100,000(@buttom)

If you divide 200,000/100,000 what will you get?

The Answer is 2kg

a breeder can sell from 2 weeks to 10-12 weeks no problem depending on what he or she intends to sell.

However the juveniles to be sold by Mr A could be 10cm and Mr B's juveniles are also 12cm in length

I know you will most likely be tempted to buy from B, however if Mr B's fishes are 13 weeks and Mr A's own is 6/7 weeks

Do the analysis. It will also speak on outcome and time to meet market. However breed is also a factor.

Let me teach you how to calculate the amount of fish feeds you would need daily in your fish farm.

First get the weight of your fishes, in some cases especially for big farmers, you can do an estimate by picking out 5 fishes and getting the average, then multiply by the total number of fish in the pond.

It is appropriate to feed your fishes between 3-5% of their body weight daily. Anything beyond +/-6 is already a waste, that is what causes pollution, depletion of oxygen, stress and leads to diseases and also mortality.

E.g to calculate amount of feed to give 2000 fishes of 20 grams for example is given below:-

Ikg = 1000g
Weight of fish =20*2000 = 40,000g

Now to feed them, the formula is

Weight of feed= 20*2000*5/1000*100

Using 5% as our choice of body weight used for calculation (remember between 3-5% is OK, though 4% is good)

Which is equal to 2kg daily, to be accurate, you have to check their weight through random sampling every week or biweekly, depending on how convenient or increase by 10-12% after a week.
BEST IS TO CHECK FISH WEIGHT

THE 2KG CAN BE GIVEN TO THE FISHES BY dividing into 2, I.e 1kg in morning, 1kg in the evening, preferably before 6pm or at worst 6pm.

In the evening oxygen content in water reduces and feeding them late can cause mortality to not bore you with details.

Share with other fish farmers, more than 70% just feed and later come to complain

If this number is accurate, then you are in for a jolly 6-months ride. Rough calculation shows 400*6000 = 2,400,000. How much is 1 kg of catfish? By the time you add other costs of running the pond, you'll barely make money.

juveniles don't have to be 6 months, we have seen 3.5-4 months result depending on source. It will not get to 400 naira when there is good feed management and you introduced local feed. I only get that for better preparation.

He or she will still recoup investment, make little profit. I will share a testimony on that as time permit.

However, FISH FARMING BUSINESS IS NOT BABA IJEBU OR LOTTO, IF YOU NEED QUICK MONEY, THEN AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTION BUSINESS IS NOT FOR YOU.

think of 400 naira per fish. Could be less. Juveniles should not be up to 6 months if 1kg table size. For profit? Depends on management and dont expect money doubling result

hmmmm hmmmm. Any one that have excess money should not spend it as a consultant will advice, especially if new and just starting.

The farm I said spent 60 million and make no profit have even permanent secretary of agric as one of the consultant. The dam is as big as 2/3 football pitch and these are not mere men, but even the THICK MONEY (10 digits) used in establishment of the farm have all become history.

Let his or her consultant do what he wants, it could work. I could have suggested the consultant is paid after result, but Nigerians are not always honest to keep promises at the end.

The proposed farm owner should visit other bigger farms on his or her own, evaluate things and make discussion.

It is possible, it is not possible, depending on their expertise, commitment and SERIOUS WORK.

About your first class, do not let it go into your head, except you are going into academics. In reality a first class aquaculture graduate should be able to do wonders. I read agronomy, but I am versatile in poultry, fish farming, beekeeping, crop production to say a few and I have learnt HTML and CSS programming language and I am thinking of mobile app development with Python language and already done little animation training. Aside that to the Glory of God I am gifted in writing and drawing.

Yet, I keep learning, though I could have claim to be a professor in fish farming (over 15 years experience). I have worked for governor, met honourables and senators, soldiers and some big men even from nairaland, but God help me to keep my integrity, I am never greedy or desirous of things that belongs to others. You could see me walk, but I have given out cars, you could see me broke, but it is because I could be sacrificing my comfort for the good of others. I don't need to travel except I am going on vacation, I was too zealous to go in my university days that my first two years wasn't good. If you rate me from third year, I am getting second class upper easily, however I have 0.04 less to get 2'2.

No need to feel somehow, I do not write application to get a job, one of my earliest job offer was from Fumman Mr Adeyemi which I refused (he is late now, died late last year). And when some friends began to disturbed me to go back to school, I did 5 years back, my brother is a PhD holder and lecturer and our juniors are already professor. I went to school after 16 years of graduation, did PGDE (full time) and got distinction, 2017 did Trcn examination and passed, 2018 started master in education technology, if only grade, I already have a distinction to the glory of God, but I have to submit thesis and Dv it will still be distinction.

First class is great, but you need to chart your path early. I have seen those that you never know could be in education as professors, while the first class students are nowhere to be found.

Read this thread if need be from start, but be ready for work, grade is not all. I have to tell you this because I see many missing it.

Thank you very much... Why not? If you have a good consultant that would be fine, but your consultant wouldn't be available all the time you know? And his services will always be paid for every time, you can only make use of the experienced consultants for the starts so as to have knowledge of what you are about to do, and all that you will need, that's why you will need a business plan...you can't just start without a business plan. Know how much you wanna start up with and your consultant will be the one to work on that. You will need an experienced fish farmer to handle the job. Someone that would be on ground all the time. You know a consultant owns his farm and he wouldn't be on ground. Your capital? The start is just the hard part because you will be getting everything new, like getting the structures, construction of ponds and all that. After all that there wouldn't be much capital needed unless you want to expand your business (farm) and another secret is if you wanna get more profits, you should be able to manufacture your fish feeds (local feed) by yourself..and all that but hey there must be a very well detailed business plan before you commence. If anyone fails, frankly speaking, such should have himself/herself to blame.

I say it raw as it is......if you have a consultant and he advised you to start your first adventure this big....something is wrong......

If you had read my post here, one striking thing is farmers calling for buyers.....
*Do you have your own buyers?
*What is the demand for catfish in Anambra?
*How many farms are fully operational there?
*What's the market size of catfish there?
*Who are your competitors.....
*What feed is your consultant recommending..
*Where would you get your feeds for and its cost implications...

There are hundred and one questions your consultant should provide for you before we hear stories that touches and some failed inexperienced, acclaimed Ratfish farmer will come here again to spray nonsense

Candid professional advise, irrespective of your consultant profile, let him manage a small scale first for you to the point of sales.

The result will determine your next line of action.

And their are ways to do such......

Pls what do you think of someone who wants to do fish farming in a large scale, we plan to build the farm to standard like building water treatment for the ponds, our farm will be located near a river for the waste, we will have 2 indutrial borehole and industrial power generator for the farm,most of our fish will be smoked while few will be sold to restaurants/hotels/market women,we plan to start with 35k fish but to increase to 140k in 4 months.
A consultant who has been into fish farming and currenlty managing 5 big farms will handle this project. All your advise will be much appreciated.
NB: We want to start with fish first but will also add brolier farming in a large scale as time goes on.

Trust him and work with him/her

Property still available for sale

Add value to the fishes you produce.

Look for your own market outside your territory.

Be firm with your price.

Don't produce more than what you could afford to feed for extra 4 months in case there is no market.

Try to formulate your feed, though no harm in starting with foreign for one or two months.

Deal with people that understand value.

Network, no single forest in fish farming business.

I also THINK piggery and poultry( especially broiler production ) are better option in livestock farming in Nigeria. I think it is easier to break even compared to fish farming.

Piggery possible, poultry I laugh. Broilers could try, quick returns if done well.

One of the major problems of fish farm is from the fingerlings. The destines of most cat fishes at determined at this stage.

Only 30% of all the fishes hatched at a time will give a farmer profit, but most farmers rare all.That's a big mistake.

There are too much wrong info out their about fish farming, the few guys speaking the truth are ignored. Well success is not for every body.

I created a paln that will revolutionize the Nigerian fish farming business,but decided to use it in house.

From hatching, selective breeding, the best self made feeding formula at a very cheap price, water management, drug combination (mix),etc

Nigerians play by the book too much.
We ignore innovative thinking and go for cheap thinking.

The business has too many short comings at the end of the day.

The best way to go is natural streams/rivers or nothing else

Indeed natural streams or rivers are great way to go, but not all of us have access to such opportunity. That is why i keep desiring such water flow Abix1 posted many years back. With that, water management, feed pollution is eliminated, also there will be massive oxygen that promote oxidation and faster growth rate to say a few.

More so, is the fact that also not every one would be able to secure their investment, especially when rainy season is in place. In addition, to purchase or construct quality cages might not be within the reach of many.

However, i love your write up, enough of following people, create your ideas outside the norm.

There are always an exit point in fish farming; first fingerlings, juveniles, jumbo, mélange,smoked fishes, table size fishes, smoked fishes, medium size brood stock, large brood stock, giant size brood stock.

Those are the numerous exit point in fish farming. Know where to target and know the price it would cost you to get there.

REASON WHY MANY FISH FARM FAILED AND ARE FAILING:-

Let me be Frank with you, fish farming is not for everyone. You can argue or talk, but the wise will reason out and ask questions.

Firstly, if you have funds is not an assurance of anything without the know how. That is why there are many abandoned fish farms littering the nation. Some lost a few hundreds of thousands, some millions, I mean good millions.

I have also paid my dues in that aspect and by God's grace grown to be an authority that have traveled and seen a lot.

To avoid joining the numbers, acknowledge the following:-
1. In fish farming, having money is a plus, but not a guaranteed success

2. What you give is what you get. You don't have the know how? You will suffer for it

3. Do not be greedy. Many understand this part well and are history

4. Get training, a mentor or authority to guide you. If you need to pay pay, but avoid to be exploited. I will not elaborate on this.

5. Get enough capital. Get business plan. It helps you to know the road map of what you are doing.

6. Understand the seasons, timing in the fish farming cycles

7.let me delimit to this, because there is more to write. If you have no water or good quality water, stay clear. If impatient? Go do betja or all this magic greed investments littering social media and almost every corner.

STAND OUT IN YOUR FISH FARMING BUSINESS:-

That everyone is selling fingerlings between the price of 12-20 naira and juveniles for 25-30 naira per one is not enough for you to follow suit. Break the norm and stand out. Who told you that you cannot sell fingerlings for 25 naira? Who told you that you cannot sell juveniles for 35 naira or jumbo for 45?

The reality is many are just following because that is the precedence and even many don't know how to put down their cost in black and White. You put down record from transportation to the time that you are selling. Then you add what it is to be made for your labor and give to prospective customers as a price.

For example, let's assume you produced 4,000 fingerlings or jumbo, and you intend to pay yourself 15 naira per one or 20, then you add the production cost and pass it to your client.

Who we buy? Understand that you are not in business for everyone. Royce's rolls, Lamborghini and Bugatti are not in business for everyone. They give premium quality and service a few. I joke that in this business I am not buka, but Mr Biggs. Interesting that you could be better if only you choose to give quality, premium services.

Give good fish size and quality, don't sell runts and they will come back. Even fight you if you stop production. But remember not to sell on credit. That ruined my poultry years ago and unfortunate that I was in it with someone close, a big sister.

In addition, for me I collect 100% for whatever I do and with God I keep my promise. 100%? Yes, 100%. Experience have thought me not to believe men. I have done consultancy, pond construction to stocking and at the end the young men paid for only my fishes and services not paid. The excuse was they had expended all their funds. I walked away, but wrote it on nairaland years ago.

Also don't be carried with status, some big people had also cheated me, but I have met a lot that are wonderful.

For the foolish youths online that just must talk without sense, from online I have met people that can pay some people's generation and you wonder what if I have chosen to be stupid in my approach to them. I will not say where experience had taken me to, but I thank God for his mercies.

When you have it and honest, offer will come, you will meet people, but remember exploitation is not the focus, but relationship. Someone offered me a flat, large expense of land in Onitsha and 10million over 4 years ago but I rejected it because my spirit does not agree with it. I was given the opportunity to make all the decision and we are just signing partnership.

My brother will say those days we are together that 'you are just suffering us, don't you know is only angels that don't spend money'?.

I know that too well now, however I will not compromise by God's Grace. I do tell clients before I started my PG schooling that tell me what you have, some will say 2m, 1m, 10m, yet I will not see that as an opportunity to exploit. Some even promised to pay and never paid. Even a partnership with a friend that millions was lost, but he only had 250k in it, he always killed me with hypertension. And he never honored the agreement in case of losses (sharing formula). I paid.

I will rather give interest than partner because I could want to help people( I gave support fishes for some to start), however because it is free, were not handled well.

As mentioned earlier, stand out. You can sell your fish seeds for 50 naira, I had sold 55 naira before and the clients still prayed and came back. Give quality and more away from the majority.

I don't know how to market, but the number one fish farmer in Nigeria was buying from me (dynamo farm) over a decade ago. The young ones cannot know them.

This is a farm that advertised one full page and at times two on guardian weekly. Integrity killed them. To know more I was going from farm to farm to see what I can add to my knowledge from my master (he lectures in yearly RCCG entrepreneur program whether in camp whether for convention or Congress) I got to reach Dr fish in iyana ipaja area (many should know him).

I looked at all their facilities and began to seek how to stand out. Over 13-15 years ago an uncle got me aerator and fish heaters from China, Mr Aboderin.

And through it all, I decided instead to sell nonsense, I would feed the not performing fishes to brood stock.

YOU CAN BE BETTER, YOU CAN STAND OUT, BUT BE PATIENT AND WORK.
