Austinbass12:nothing bad feeding twice. treat with floxinor. Next time when your fish are not responding to feed, check if water is polluted, check if there are bubbles or foams on the water surface, check if the weather is cold to say a few. That fish do not eat or reduction in feeding rate could be as a result of cold weather. iF at the same time, they begin to die, then stop feeding and treat with antibiotic or salt, or aquapro or the floxinor mentioned earlier(it will stop death if used to prescription within 2-3 days or earlier), change water and increase oxygen because when weather is extremely cold( NOTE:- oxygen in water reduces) Those are a few of the solution, i have time to give. I believe all is now well with your farm/fish now. All the best |
deolu9:I am in ibadan, however look for someone close to you because of funds |

Cation:add vitamin c into feed.get vitamin to improve vitamin absorbing ability for the fishes |
Herjyborlah:i don't raise broodstock |
lormarx:I WOULD ADVISE YOU READ THROUGH THE THREAD |
Cation:it is the quality of your feed that determine your FCR |
Herjyborlah:dried fine yolk. As your fishes grow, they will prefer bigger chunk of feeds than fine feeds |
Herjyborlah:you can, create a gutter like environ, or harvest from gutter and do not subject them to hot environ. instead buy artemia or use yolk of egg |
Herjyborlah:i don't have broodstock. Learn to reserve the best for future use. I am in ibadan |
terra15:Congratulations on your success. I believe the naysayers will have to also come that you possibly could enlighten them. Also, i pray your breeder gets back on his/her feet soon in Jesus Name, Amen |
Herjyborlah:If you have enough faith, why not. Anyone can hatch, management is key. There are lots of experts here and if any is close to you and intend to hatch, you can visit such. Keep us updated |
HOW TO REDUCE YOUR FISH FARMING PRODUCTION COST :- The major challenge in fish farming is how do you feed your fishes. Today it interest me to t The teach you some crude methods that possibly could reduce your feeding cost. The truth is if fuel price increases, feeding cost would increase and presently feeds are not cheap. Let's start from the hatchery, those days when we began fish business in Nigeria, even the major names in the business in hatchery go to stagnant waters and gutters to get daphnia to feed their fries. It is free, only that you will have to dump your fine face status or big man or woman position to get them. In the alternative, pay boys to do the job. You don't have to buy artemia, daphnia are live feeds that your fishes we thank you for and they we also grow fast on. That is for breeders at the early stage. No matter the quantity, it does not pollute or kill your fishes. Just disinfect. I tried then to culture it iin concrete ponds, but after about three days the heat killed them and never had the time to revisit it. Your fingerlings could be fed with the dried yellow of eggs, which is high in protein or with cooked or fresh minced meat, Don't overfeed and you will not have problems. If you could raise maggots, your MATURED FINGERLINGS COULD BE FED WITH IT, HOWEVER, EXCESS WILL CREATE PROBLEMS. For big fishes, if earthen, poultry waste e.g excreta, intestines, dead birds that could be process. I also used EBA AND FISH MEAL MIXED. Feeding them indomies, not the ones you buy for kids(will be expensive). You can feed your fishes kitchen waste too, however be prepare for good water management. If earthen ponds, pray planktons grow or tadpoles eggs are laid in the ponds or get termites(can be done in concrete ponds too , get duckweed, water lily yo limit it to this. I wish you all the best. If you need an comprehensive ebook on fish farming, and i have a ebook, step by step details from hatchery, feeding, feed formulation, grow out, oxygen addition etc. Consultants, Academicians, practicing fish farmers, intending fish farmers have found it valuable asset for fish farming business. |
gonerest:Amen and Amen. God bless you |
gonerest:depends on fish. To be forced to over feed them A big meal cannot make them grow overnight. As long as you are providing the needed quantity need daily, and they are growing, no challenge. To know if your fishes are sick, you could flash light (touch), the sick will hardly swim away from the light rays |
gonerest:Since you are sure they are good seeds, it could be stress from your handling, especially when you transported them. Stress results in disease outbreak and die. That is a possibility or originated from over feeding, poor water management. NOTE- you could change water daily and still pollute it daily by overfeeding. Advice, check feeding, treat with antibiotics or aquapro to boost their immune system. Just to say a few |
All mails to me should be sent by the information details beneath my posts. That email & telephone is what I could access. Thank you pentsystems please take note |
gonerest:Depends on many factors and one of the factors usually ignored if the stress people subject the fishes to during water change. Either slow water flow, temperature to say a few. If it continues for long, the stress have enabled sickness to occur and anti stress could have been handy or antibiotic |
robonski15:bro, thank God |
holar2ge:each of the products have their own FCR. Hence, you could easily verify from the makers or check if written on their packs |
holar2ge:depends on the feed conversion ratio of the feed you are using. If 1:1, yes. If 1:1.2, no. If worst, no. So, it is not only about that, the health of fish and water management is also very important. |
Fish4wealth:I acknowledge your comment, however 300k fingerlings is not too low because not everyone sell at your stated price. I dont sell less than 15 naira and that is even if it is on compassionate ground. I have seen sales from 25 naira from others too. The reason why many breeders pack up is because they dont keep records and hardly give quality care for premium price. One of the reason the market is messed up in quote is because no standards size and worst case is the issue of some selling ijebus(first many buyers can hardly manage it and secondly, fear or lack of sufficient resources in some case.). Because it is unpredictable, you dont sell just anyhow. Give the best and get paid for it. So, my 200k advice does not change. Also, a good breeder, except for challenge of facilities or space will not go and work for anyone. Only if they are consulted to come to breed and leave. Definitely you know the 3 days or 5-7 days they decide to stay, they will not collect less than 50k. However, the market have no define standard, hence you see anything happening |
ab1x:bro, you are experience now and I believe we need to continue to enlighten people and if possible, people should produce their feeds themselves. Can you do a favor if you are still close to those gushing earthen ponds for a picture or short 20-30 seconds video. Based on my previous post I am letting people know that earthen ponds are not equal in terms of productivity. Appreciated solomonalamu@gmail.com |
ab1x:Nigerian's problem. Reason I mentioned that it could be close based on people's formulation, if the coppens result is farfetched. For the fake products, there will still be reputable feed materials sources |
SPECIFICALLY FOR THOSE ASKING IF THEIR FISHES ARE DOING WELL:- You don't need to ask provided you are doing the important things like good water management, feeding right to mention few. However, to mend the heart of those that have been discouraged by naysayers, some of the comments are from people that have not even tried anything. If you say this is the size of your fishes, they will complain that it is too big or too small etc. The fact remains that parameters differ; feed types, water management, parent stock, pond type and so on. Do not forget that earthen ponds that is profess as the best also differ. A gushing earthen pond is far better than a stagnant or slow refilling earthen pond. The one with a gushing earthen pond will do better anytime under the same situation, except technology is use in another pond type. To let those that are always willing to comment without in depth analysis to think better, there are people achieving 1kg in less than 5 months. It reminds me of gushing earthen ponds in Ogun state shown by AB1X many years ago on nairaland, whether the owner is experience or not he or she will still outshine most farmers. Why? Simple, the fishes can hardly be sick, there is lot of oxidation to promote growth, the fishes will do great to delimit to the mentioned. Now in case you don't know and also to do some reorientation, let me write what coppens published on their feed years back. PDF from coppens online shows from day one hatchlings to week 8, the daily feed, possible weight etc and it further shows from 10g fish to grow out and it states that at 2 month the fish should be 300 gram, 3 month should be 600 gram, 4 months 1kg, 5 month fish should be 1.5kg and a six month African catfish fed with coppens should be 2kg. You might not attain this with your feed, but you do something close, though depending on your feed formulation conversion ratio. So instead of coming to ask for opinions, you could measure your work with a standard assessment. In case you want to see the PDF, do yourself a favor to Google it. From the analysis you can assess your work yourself better. |

WHY MANY PEOPLE GET RETIRED EARLY AS FISH BREEDERS? Fish farming is a lucrative business, don't mind the naysayers, however if not done well, you will fail. I know you have faith, I am a man of faith by His Grace, but I will do my part (only God is perfect) and base the rest on faith. In business, you need to be physical (work) and spiritual (pray), though it is an open fact to the dimension of some people's spirituality. However, I am not making any sermon here, but talking fish farming. Hence, for fish farming, if you don't have a plan, you have no defined direction. if you have no water, enough water, not wise to start, except you intend to do Recirculating system (not system) and this is not cheap. Now to the main course, fish breeders, it is no news that many are quitting, however many too are inspired to come in because they hear you can make millions in fish hatchery business in few months. The fact remains that fish hatchery is the area where expertise is most needed. Aside skills, everything should be in place and those employing breeders should enumerated well. Any breeder that is paid less than N200,000 monthly as salary is been cheated, irrespective of qualification (Though, this is Nigeria, people get paid anything). Such breeder should be ready to produce at least 300,000 fingerlings plus yearly (this could also be accomplished in 2 months provided the broodstocks are good, sufficient water, enough facilities, money to mention a few. The reason why many retire early is MONEY AND MONEY. When they fail, no money to get back on and worst is the situation where those that lack agricultural knowledge or business evaluate agricultural business for access to funding. When money is not enough or sufficient, there is bound to be many mistakes. And when the mistakes begin to happen, everyone becomes suspect. And because not all have the financial muscle to hold on, they get retired early. |
