joeking2222:Thank God for first class. It is experience and skill you need, especially in fisheries and aquaculture. Or good for master program in your field or related field. It is not job you need, build yourself, except you are aged, I will say reason out what I said and see what is best for your future. At the same time, I know there are many people on nairaland that have the muscle and ability to help build life, whatever you could do to assist, please do. The Lord will best you in Jesus Name, Amen. |
Op are you watching the young ones arguments? If you failed and you said fish farming is terrible and no one to do it, whosoever wants to follow that advice should follow. If you are making it or you are just coming up and believe there is prospect for you in fish farming, get more insight if you need to. get mentor if need be or go for training if you need improvement. I don't know why or the reason for any hullabaloo Stay bless |
It is important for me to state that having money does not guarantee that your fish farm will be successful. I have seen someone spend N60m and made no profit. Even the someone complaining on nairaland of his brother spending N15m and it all ended in losses. All these are your fault, if you want the truth. Go to the beginning of this thread and you will see that the op said he lost 2 million, that is over 6 years ago. You think those that are now doing great or experts never lost millions too? We learnt from our experience, zeal and ignorance. In future my counsel to whosoever is simple, First, get the useful information and skills before you start. Also don't let greed kill you. I don't know why people will invest that much, but will not invest to know the intrigues of fish farming? Whatever you intend to invest, try to use at least 3% to get the know-how. Then, no consultant or expert will be able to play on your intelligence. My one Dollar for you this day |
atoleybaba:unfortunately, many get burnt and retired because they think their money is all they need to be a farmer. Only if people go around the country, they will learn and know agricultural business takes more than many envisaged. |
issamiracle:though it is possible to store milt to be used for future, but milt from dead male may not be in your best interest, especially if the fish had died for a while |
Though I have been away from this place for a long time. My advice is if you are planning to go into fish farming, know what it takes, get insight and don't think because you have money that you can get around any business. Ask dangote about his Indomies or his fruit juice business. My own one dollar for you |
Weedsmoker:who want to change your perception? Your loss and your decision. Question is how can 15m be use for hatchery? Why will any use loan for something they know little about? I only sympathise with the one that suffer loss. It is well |
Let me teach you how to calculate the amount of fish feeds you would need daily in your fish farm. First get the weight of your fishes, in some cases especially for big farmers, you can do an estimate by picking out 5 fishes and getting the average, then multiply by the total number of fish in the pond. It is appropriate to feed your fishes between 3-5% of their body weight daily. Anything beyond +/-6 is already a waste, that is what causes pollution, depletion of oxygen, stress and leads to diseases and also mortality. E.g to calculate amount of feed to give 2000 fishes of 20 grams for example is given below:- Ikg = 1000g Weight of fish =20*2000 = 40,000g Now to feed them, the formula is Weight of feed= 20*2000*5/1000*100 Using 5% as our choice of body weight used for calculation (remember between 3-5% is OK, though 4% is good) Which is equal to 2kg daily, to be accurate, you have to check their weight through random sampling every week or biweekly, depending on how convenient or increase by 10-12% after a week. BEST IS TO CHECK FISH WEIGHT THE 2KG CAN BE GIVEN TO THE FISHES BY dividing into 2, I.e 1kg in morning, 1kg in the evening, preferably before 6pm or at worst 6pm. In the evening oxygen content in water reduces and feeding them late can cause mortality to not bore you with details. Share with other fish farmers, more than 70% just feed and later come to Post by Excelsiorfarm |
Today, let me teach you how you can know the appropriate number of fishes that you could keep in any given space or containers. It is obvious that among the most asked questions in fish farming is 'how many fishes will/would be kept in a pond of this length, height(depth) and width'? Today, you will have no need to worry on that again. By the Grace of God, you will know how to do your calculation, which is what only a few can confidently say they know, apart from guess work on what should or should not be raised in a space or pond. Not to give you worries, let's delve straight to how you can calculate water content in litres in any given space. This is something I was privilege to write many years ago on nairaland to educate prospective and working fish farmers. Now to the calculation:- Let's assume your pond is length=10 Width=10 and depth is 4. First to get the number of gallons of water, your calculation will be 10*10*4 multiply by 7.5= 3,000 gallons of water. The 7.5 is a standard, hence I won't waste time to elaborate. Now, you have to convert the gallons into litres (remember, we work mostly in litres). There are two major litres measurement globally, the US litres and the UK litres. 1 US gallon = 3.79 litres (it have been approximated to 2 decimal from 3.7878) 1 UK gallon=4.55 litres (it have been approximated to 2 decimal from 4.5455) Hence, now convert the 3,000 gallons above to litres. For UK=11,363.64 litres For US=13,636.36 litres Now you know the litres of water present in your pond. The question is now, how much water does a fish need to grow well? The answer is it depends on expertise and technology. Recirculatory system needs far less(expensive, expensive because of need to power it too). Let me come to the norm, with or without aerators. A fish is OK with 11-12 litres, that is about 1000 with good management. However, I could say I will do more with more fishes, that is raise more with less water by including aerators or not. All this does not come by trials, experience will help you know your handling limits. BEST YOU FOLLOW THE PREVIOUS, BECAUSE THE SECOND WILL BE BY YOUR OWN CAPABILITY WITH EXPERIENCE OVERTIME. Note:- I used the US litres for my calculation because it is appropriate. Also, if your pond have irregular sharp(not every pond is well defined in it's measurement), there is a gap of 10-20% less in your calculation, depending on how great the irregularities is seen. I wish you all the best in your fish farming exploits. And possibly, I could give more vital information in future. Share with other fish farmers and understand that it is pertinent to know what number to stock, so as not to stunt the growth of your fishes. Better more space for newbies, than overcrowding. For the experience ones, you can do without calculating anything. The realities, determine the decision you take. Post by Excelsiorfarm |
Weedsmoker:I know someone that spent 60m and made nothing. However your brother tried. Agriculture is not about having money, it is more than that. I know someone that invested 2m in crop(maize) and made 200k (1.8m losses). Many tried to start without insight, and they failed. Let me see the picture of the hatchery. How long did it run? If you are humble enough to show me, I will tell you what want wrong. That 15m is 500k juveniles. How much did you pay to consultant? Information marketers? If you answer this I will thoroughly analyse your fish project. Others could learn from this |

Franzee:agriculture is not like the hype you see many saying because it entails patient, good funding and also good management to mention the least. For media agency, it is your skills, ideas and contacts that matters most and in some cases the funds you set out with are clients provision. You know what you have and understand the best for you. All the Best |
Hmmnm, everything has it up and down side. Both good, handling and marketing with few touch of sound contacts could make it great. Weigh your skills, passion and possibly you could make the best decision |
PHOTSEE:I am OK, being at school, hence not on farm presently. Thanks, I believe you are doing great |
If you are ready to change your perception, you could still come out with second class lower. Attend classes, change association if not serious minded. Buy manuals if a compulsion by your lecturers, take notes and try to do some tutorials. It is possible if you decide to be focus. In future, you could change course. |
Frank274:Hopefully others might be able to assist with valid answer to this |
