One issue we face in our country is a certain apprehension towards entrusting young individuals with key government positions. It is essential that we recognize and overcome this bias in order to harness the potential of our youth for the betterment of our nation.

STATE HOUSE PRESS RELEASE

PRESIDENT TINUBU TO INDIAN INVESTORS: DO NOT PROCRASTINATE AS NIGERIA OFFERS THE BEST RETURN ON INVESTMENT; LAUDS $14 BILLION IN NEW INVESTMENT PLEDGES AT NIGERIA-INDIA ECONOMIC ROUNDTABLE

President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday commended Indian investors for significant investment pledges amounting to nearly $14 billion U.S. dollars committed during the Nigeria-India Presidential Roundtable and Conference in New Delhi, India, saying, "we are ready to give you the best returns for investment possible, there's nowhere else like our country. Nigeria offers the best returns for investment today, so invest now."

Among these many new investments, Indorama Petrochemical Limited has pledged a new investment of $8 billion U.S. dollars in the expansion of its fertilizer production and petrochemical facility in Eleme, Rivers State.

Jindal Steel and Power Limited, one of India's largest private steel producers, has committed to investing $3 billion in Nigeria, following discussions with President Tinubu on the sidelines of the G-20 Summit in New Delhi, India.

Founding President of SkipperSeil Limited, Mr. Jitender Sachdeva announced that, following President Bola Tinubu's personal intervention, he is investing $1.6 billion U.S. dollars in the establishment of twenty 100MW power generation plants across the states of Northern Nigeria, amounting to 2,000MW of new power within the next four years.

Additionally, the President has approved finalization on a new $1 billion U.S. dollar agreement to bring the Defense Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON) to 40% self-sufficiency in local manufacturing and production of defense equipment in-country by 2027 through a comprehensive new partnership with the Managing Arm of the Miltary-Industrial Complex of the Indian Government.

Another Indian firm, Bharti Enterprises, which is a major first-generation corporation in India with interests in telecom, space communications, digital solutions, insurance, processed foods, real estate, and hospitality, has expressed its commitment to invest an additional $700 million in Nigeria, with work set to begin immediately.

Emphasizing that under his pragmatic leadership, agreements must now manifest in industries and jobs on the ground in Nigeria, President Tinubu expressed gratitude to all Indian companies and individuals who have responded positively to his administration's efforts to improve Nigeria's macroeconomic and investment climate.

"Do not procrastinate. Don’t be frightened about investments in Nigeria. Bring it on. Ask your questions and make your requests. The trade and investment opportunities are enormous. I have a team, and I am the captain of that team, and I assure you that we solve problems," the President affirmed.

Prospective investors were informed by the President, that in Nigeria, there is no free lunch or shortcuts, but that he has "good economic policy for the investors as well as able men and women in leadership and on the ground, who can drive the goal of broad prosperity through investment and infrastructure."

"I will captain and lead the course of investment, development, and prosperity for the largest democracy in Africa and for investors from the rest of the world," the President added, reiterating that Nigeria is open for business with intelligent, innovative, capable, and highly committed individuals in government, who are ready to drive the largest economy in Africa to destiny.

The President also told the Summit that "he is proud" that the Nigerian stock market had broken records in its consistent bullishness since he assumed office.

Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun, who addressed the roundtable themed, "Building Partnerships with Renewed Hope for a Diversified and Prosperous Economy," thanked Mr. Naveen Jindau, Chairman of Jindal Steel and Power Limited, for the new $3 billion investment in iron ore processing and steel development in Nigeria.

Commending the Tata group and so many others who have immediately responded to Mr. President's bold and decisive moves to correct the major systemic faults in the macro-economic and investment climate in Nigeria, the Finance Minister noted, "I also wish to thank Mr. Sunil Bharti Mittal, Founder and Chairman of Bharti Enterprises, for his continued commitment to invest in the first phase at least $700 million dollars more in Nigeria," Mr. Edun said.

Minister Edun further used the opportunity to explain the underlying principles of President Tinubu's eight-point strategy, emphasizing that his agenda aims to promote growth and job creation, poverty reduction, food security, improved access to capital, inclusivity, business and citizen security, and fair play on a foundation of rule of law and anti-corruption.

On behalf of investors, Chairman of Bharti Enterprises, Mr. Sunil Bharti Mittal told the President, "You have unified the FX market. You have freed up crucial capital to upgrade your public infrastructure. Now, you have just dropped your prepared remarks and have spoken from your heart. Our investors have heard from a leader who is doing everything possible to attract capital to Nigeria for the benefit of Nigerians and our companies. Mr. President, we will bring these investments to Nigeria, and with your inspiring leadership style, we can only do more and more."

Also, at the event, Nigeria's Minister of Communication, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, and his counterpart from India's Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for Co-operation in the field of Sharing Successful Digital Solutions, to be implemented at total population scale for digital transformation.

The Minister also signed an MoU with Central Square Foundation for Co-operation in the field of Sharing Successful Ecosystems, which involve interventions relating to education technology, to be implemented at population scale for digital economic transformation.

Under the watch of Nigeria's Industry, Trade and Investment Minister, Dr. Doris Uzoka-Anite, a third MoU on Infrastructure Development was signed between the Infrastructure Corporation of Nigeria Limited (InfraCorp) and Invest India, the National Investment Promotion and Facilitation Agency of India, which helps investors looking for investment opportunities and options in India.

Closing the interactive session, Mr. Chandrajit Banerjee, the Director-General of the Confederation of Indian Industries (CII), noted that the Presidential Roundtable serves as a robust foundation for Indian businesses looking to engage with Nigeria and would encompass cooperation across key areas, such as capacity building, skills development, agriculture, and the enhancement of digital and physical infrastructure, among others.

"Under the determined leadership of President Tinubu, the CII is prepared to dispatch a high-level delegation to Nigeria, and we are keen on establishing a second presence in Africa, with Nigeria as our target destination," he concluded.

The Presidential roundtable, attended by President Tinubu, also had in attendance Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State; Amb. Yusuf Tuggar, Minister of Foreign Affairs;
Dr. Bosun Tijani, Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy; and Dr. Doris Uzoka-Anite, Minister of Industry, Trade, and Investment; along with industry leaders from both India and Nigeria.

Following the Roundtable, the President met individually with each of the top pledging investors to finalize on the next steps to ensure that no environmental encumbrance stands in the way of their success in Nigeria.

Politics / President Tinubu To Oracle Global Vp: With Cutting Edge Technology, We Will Digi by EXOTICN: 6:13pm On Sep 04, 2023
STATE HOUSE PRESS RELEASE

PRESIDENT TINUBU TO ORACLE GLOBAL VP: WITH CUTTING EDGE TECHNOLOGY, WE WILL DIGITIZE THE PUBLIC SERVICE AND SURGICALLY APPLY PUBLIC MONEY FOR GROWTH

President Bola Tinubu, on Monday, expressed his support for new partnerships with global technology companies to ensure that data from public institutions are accurate and transparent in providing templates on which proper public sector planning and accounting can occur across sectors.

Speaking at a meeting in the State House with the Global Vice President of Oracle, Mr. Andres Garcia Arroyo, the President welcomed the company's commitment to Nigeria's civil service reform process and data management sector, even as he emphasized the need for greater knowledge transfer through the establishment of academies and training institutions in the country.

Aiming to promote the ease of doing business, digital innovation, effective identity management, efficient payroll administration and qualitative citizen-centred service delivery, the President cited Oracle's proven success in the automation of the Lagos State payroll system during his tenure as the Lagos State Governor and lauded the positive impact of technological solutions in enhancing accountability, and expediting timelines for service delivery without sacrificing quality in the process.

"I have tested Oracle and it has worked for our success. In Lagos State, what we did in effective collaboration with you, has been copied across the states of the Federation. We can only build our institutions with accurate data and cutting edge data management capabilities that are reliable and effective. We can only rely upon our human resources for excellent service delivery to Nigerians, if they are well trained and ready to learn.

"The transfer of knowledge is essential for our nation and the continent. In this government, we believe that the only way to build our country is a bottom-up-approach and from one single sheet of paper, we can create an end-to-end solution for public administration that will rid our service of its worst tendencies in favor of effectiveness and reliability," the President declared.

Expressing concern about Nigeria's bloated civil service payroll at the national and sub-national levels, the President stated: "Each time they give me the payroll number, I get so frightened. Where am I going to get the capital to develop the infrastructure we desperately require if the payroll of 1% - 2% of the population is consuming all the revenue? I think we need a tight technological control that can check and balance all necessary control points of our transaction processes. I'm looking forward to working with Oracle because I have the belief and confidence that you can do it as you have in the past."

In his remarks, the Global Vice President of Oracle proposed a comprehensive digital transformation of work process at the federal level of administration, in order to achieve greater macro-economic visibility; streamline government processes for cost and time savings; and to provide the desired skills development opportunities for Nigerians.

"You have shown tremendous practical leadership throughout your career, Mr. President. We have partnered with you and we know how determined you are to achieve all that you set out to achieve. This is why we are offering Nigeria a free national diagnostic of the present situation in the public service with a view to dimensioning across sectors the scale of solution required. We look forward to partnering with you again," the Oracle VP concluded.

Politics / Nigeria Labour Congress (nlc) Is The World Upside Down? by EXOTICN: 8:39pm On Jul 02, 2011
A CASE of removing the log in your eyes before complaining of the speck in other persons’ is currently rocking the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC). The umbrella body of Nigeria’s workers, which has a history of fighting on behalf of wrongly dismissed people, is being accused of the same unfair, anti-Labour tendencies, by no less a person than its National Secretary, Mr. John Odah.

Odah, the embattled General Secretary of the union has rejected his sack by the National President, Omar Abdulwaheed, describing the present occupier of the seat as an impostor.

Odah, in a letter dated 20 June, 2011 and addressed to Omar, rejected the termination of his appointment, which he said went against laid down procedures, an action that Labour had always resisted on behalf of others.

He expressed dismay that the National Executive Council, NEC of the NLC could take a decision that would undermine and violate everything that the congress claims to uphold throughout the years as the defender of the rights and interests of workers.

His words: “The NLC has consistently fought, especially in the case of unjust termination of workers, for the right of employees to fair hearing and due process. The NLC has always presumed such workers innocent until proven guilty. The right to fair hearing as a cardinal principle of justice is now firmly established in the Nigerian Constitution.

“Our NLC has used this principle as a major point of advocacy in the struggle to defend the rights and interests of its members. It is therefore only in a world turned upside down that the NLC can now proceed to deal summarily with its own employees in utter violation and disregard of the very principles that it has sought to apply and teach to employers of labour, including government in Nigeria.”

Odah continued: “In an attempt to hurriedly deal with me, all fairness and decency were thrown overboard. I was never accused of any wrong doing for which my appointment has now been purportedly terminated. Even if it can be assumed that any accusations were made, I was never made to answer the charges before my accusers.

“As a labour centre/movement whose primary job is defence of the rights of workers, we cannot be seen, whether privately or in the eyes of the public, to dispense so brazenly and crudely with the services of any officer of the NLC. This applies even more when that officer is the General Secretary of the NLC.

“If your action which breaches the elementary rules of “due process” and “right to fair hearing” is sustained and allowed to stand, it will become impossible for the NLC, any workers’ organization, and indeed any worker in Nigeria to respond when our class opponents in the form of various employers – either private or public – unilaterally and crudely dispense with the services of workers in their employment.”

In the letter, the former NLC scribe described his sack as sadistic and unjustified, saying that he was never accused of any wrong-doing or invited to defend himself before any panel nor did he ever demonstrate incapacity to carry out his function. He, therefore, declared that he remained the valid general secretary of Congress.

“Your decision to terminate my appointment is therefore clearly unacceptable to me. It is unjust, sadistic, and violates all known norms of decency, justice and fairness. It is aimed at destroying my career, destroying my record of great service to the workers and people of this country.

“It is also calculated to portray me in very bad light before various publics, including international friends of the NLC with whom we have forged ever closer relationships over the years. I reject the decision to terminate my appointment and maintain that I am still validly the General Secretary of the Nigeria Labour Congress.

“I also believe that whatever you may proceed to do under the office of the General Secretary of Congress will be null and void and whoever you may designate to take my place, which is not vacant, will be an unconscionable impostor.”

According to Odah, his sack clearly sets a bad precedent for any employer in the country who would not hesitate to sack workers at the slightest provocation without following the due process.

He added that the foremost labour body had consistently fought injustice in the place of work saying this step would follow same path as he was ready to explore all avenues to reverse the ploy to remove him unjustly.

He described the present leadership of the congress under which the decision to sack him was carried out as not beingt the kind of labour body that generations of genuine and patriotic labour leaders such as Labour Leader No 1, Comrade Michael Imoudu, Hassan Sunmonu, Wahab Goodluck, Ali Ciroma and others made grave sacrifices for.

Omar had in a letter dated 24th May, 2011 wrote to inform Odah of his sack via a resolution of the National Executive Council (NEC) that he ceased to be the General Secretary of the Congress with effect from the same date citing re-organization of the NLC secretariat.
