This is what happened.

In late 2017, United was prepared to offer Herrera a new contract. Talks commenced but both parties could not come to an agreement.

So, United took advantage of the terms in his previous contract, and triggered the one-year extension clause. Which forced him to stay for at least one more season, the 2018/2019 season.

Late 2018, United still wanted to renew his contract, but he demanded about 200k/wk, something United were not ready to grant him. So United stalled (a simple negotiation tactic).

To understand the circumstances. That was the period when the club had realized that Sanchez had scammed them. Sanchez situation made other better performing players demand a massive salary increase. United were determined to salvage an-already scattered wage structure, and were offering based on long-term potential. Which was why Martial got 250k, and Jones got 75k thereabouts.

While United felt their tactic would work (which is what they're doing for Sancho now), PSG came in and offered Herrera a very good deal, about 350k/wk. There was no way United would have offered Herrera that amount of money, especially for a 5-yr deal. So even when they "gave-in" to the 200k, it was still a no-brainer to leave the club.

To understand this better. Pogba earns 290k/wk. How will United have matched PSG's offer without causing chaos at the club?

Put yourself in Herrera's shoes

29yr old. Time is going fast.
Moving to a lower quality league.
Joining the best club in the league.
Earning more than a player like Pogba.
Living in a great city like Paris.

Gueye trumps Herrera in the first two parameters you listed. I don't need to check Premier league page to know that. I remember Gueye and Ndidi were always dragging 1st and 2nd position with each other on those two parameters every season till Gueye left for PSG.

After watching Herrera at United for years (e.g against the most skilful player in EPL then Eden Hazard), you still believe Gueye is better in making tackles and interception

I mentioned 7 key attributes for a midfielder and you can't mention just ONE that you can clearly rate Gueye higher.....

He was offered contract extension more than once but the money was the problem.

By the time Ed eventually gave in, PSG had already come with a better offer of 300k. So it was a no brainer that he will accept the offer from PSG
