The bridge is being built by three different governments in China, so it can only open when all sides are ready.
On the last day of 2017, the country celebrated the completion of the world's longest sea bridge, the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge, with a spectacular fireworks display. The fireworks were a part of the lighting-up ceremony for the mammoth motorway bridge and were witnessed by around 10,000 construction workers. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-5231355/Spectacular-fireworks-worlds-longest-sea-bridge.html
Officials say the bridge will be up and running for 120 years. China is already home to first and second longest sea bridges, which spans 34 miles and 26.3 miles. The second completed in 2011, the $1.5 billion structure links the eastern coastal city of Qingdao to the suburb of Huangdao.
Some 40,000 vehicles are expected to use the bridge daily, including shuttle buses running at 10-minute intervals. Pedestrians will not be able to cross the bridge, nor will bicyclists; it's just for cars.
China also built four artificial islands to support the structure. The 2012 photo below shows artificial islands China built for the bridge near Lantau Island, in Hong Kong.
The bridge features six lanes and four tunnels, one of which is underwater. Cars will have to change sides of the road when they get into Hong Kong, which drives on the left. Entrance to the tunnel.
The 420,000 tonnes of steel used for the project represent 60 times the amount used in the Eiffel Tower, China's official Xinhua news agency said. Gao Xinglin, the bridge's project planning manager, said the construction of the 6.7-kilometre underwater tunnel gave him sleepless nights. "There were many nights where I couldn't fall asleep, because there were too many difficulties during the construction," Gao told reporters Wednesday. "Linking the 80,000-tonne pipes under the sea with watertight technology was the most challenging," he added.
Nine years after construction began on the 55-kilometre (34-mile) crossing, a preview organised by the Chinese government offered a first peek into the megaproject. The bridge will link Hong Kong to the southern Chinese city of Zhuhai and the gambling enclave of Macau, cutting across the waters of the Pearl River Estuary. Although the official opening date has not been confirmed. Dogged by delays, budget overruns, accusations of corruption and the deaths of construction workers, the bridge failed to open by the end of 2017 as hoped. There have also been safety concerns after 19 lab workers were charged over faking concrete test reports, with one man jailed last December.
China is the midst of several megaprojects that will transform its cities. Over the next decade, China plans to encourage 250 million people (29 times New York City's population) to move into the country's growing megacities. To cope with that huge migration, the country has invested tens of billions of dollars in giant infrastructure projects. Touted as an engineering wonder, the world's longest sea bridge, which connects Hong Kong, Macau and mainland China, includes a snaking road crossing and an underwater tunnel. Called the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge, the project is expected to cut travel time in half. Commuters will be able to travel across the Pearl River Estuary from Macau to Hong Kong in about an hour. https://www.pulse.ng/bi/tech/china-is-opening-the-world-s-longest-sea-bridge-and-it-contains-enough-steel-to-build-60-eiffel-towers-id8207216.html

Durex, one of the UK's major condom manufacturers, recalled the products on Monday, July 30. The recall specifically affects the non-latex Durex Real Feel and the Durex Latex Free condoms, but none of the company's other products. These condoms failed to pass 'rigorous' quality tests, the company revealed, but it says there is no immediate safety concern for customers. Durex said: 'Our tests have shown that some batches which are currently on the market do not pass the requirements for burst pressure towards the end of the shelf life for the product. 'Our condoms are intended to provide a method of contraception and prevent the transmission of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) through a non-latex barrier that offers a benefit to consumers sensitive to latex. 'There could be an increase in the number of condoms that burst' 'Only for the batches of condoms affected by this issue, there could be an increase in the number of condoms that burst during application or use.' Condoms are the only method of protection against both sexually transmitted infections and pregnancy, and male condoms are 98 per cent effective when used properly. However, they can split, which means a woman could become pregnant or sexually transmitted infections could pass between partners. Durex advises people to seek advice from a doctor or pharmacist as soon as possible if a condom leaks or bursts during use.

Warning!!! Durex has recalled 10 batches of condoms because they might burst during sex. The company's six, 12 and 18-packs of 'Real Feel' and latex-free condoms failed to pass tests of their burst pressure as they near their use-by date, Durex warned. All the condoms were made this year and are on sale, they have an expiry date of between December 2020 and February 2021. Durex says condoms in the batch could burst more easily than normal, and a health authority warns this could lead to a risk of unwanted pregnancies or sexually transmitted infections. People have been warned not to use the condoms if they think they are from an affected batch, and to return them for a refund. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-6008289/Durex-recalls-batches-condoms-fears-burst.html

The gold-colored walkway is lined with purple Lobelia Chrysanthemums and extends for almost 150 metres, curving around in an elegant design. But it is the sculpted hands that give it the true wow factor. The design for the bridge came from a company calledTA Landscape Architecture, and while the hands look like they are carved from stone, they are actually not. “We designed the skeleton of the hands and covered them with steel meshes,” a representative of the company said.

Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett also shared his condolences at the funeral ceremony. Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb spoke at the funeral to honor Horace Coleman, Belinda Coleman, Irvin Coleman, Angela Coleman and Maxwell Coleman five of the nine Coleman family members that perished in the tragedy. Marion County Prosecutor Terry Curry breaks down in tears after giving a speech at the memorial. Bishop G. Victor Morrisey Jr. of God's Love Christian Church told the mourners:' I believe Glenn could have saved himself, I believe he could have got away by himself. 'But he wanted to make sure his family was going to be alright. He wasn't going to leave his children to fend for themselves. On Friday, ceremony was held for the four other Coleman family members who also perished in the devastating boat sinking, honoring Glenn Goleman, 40 and his three children: 9-year-old Reece, 7-year-old Evan and 1-year-old Arya. |
The family who lost nine relatives when a duck boat sank in a Missouri lake hasfiled a lawsuit seeking $100million in damages against the owners and operators. Attorneys representing the estates of Ervin Coleman and Maxwell Ly filed the lawsuit against Ripley Entertainment, the owner of Ride the Ducks of Branson, on Sunday. Ervin, 76, and two-year-old Maxwell were two of the 17 passengers who were killed when the Ride the Ducks boat sank at Table Rock Lake on July 19. Only two of the 11 family members, who were visiting from Indiana, survived the horrific accident. The federal lawsuit accuses Ripley Entertainment of ignoring bad weather warnings that day and knowing the boat had design flaws that made is susceptible to sinking.

There were a total of 31 people aboard the duck boat sank after a sudden storm passed over Table Rock Lake in Branson, Missouri on July 19, killing 17. Nine of those victims were of the Coleman family. A bystander captured this shocking video showing the doomed boat being lashed by strong, massive waves for about five minutes before it became entirely submerged. The sunken 'Ride the Ducks' duck boat in Branson, Missouri, is raised from the bed of Table Rock Lake in Missouri on July 23. When the sunken vessel was hauled from the bottom of the lake on Monday, several life jackets were seen crammed under the boat's canopy.
