Do or die politics at its finest.

People from the southwest are good assassins though. If Nigeria ever becomes a strong nation, they should be incorporated into the security apparatus.

Watch out for the deadly Efik/Ibibio militia and MASSOB next year. This can still be stopped by just a simple decision.Ending unnecessary frame ups and true federalism.
I seriously doubt it my brother. The Efik/Ibibio are not prone to militancy. Now the Ogoni on the other hand might turn to it.

Ibibios basically have the same outlook as the wider Igbo.

Ask me Achabe deserves Nobel prize for his contributions in the world of Literature. But it pains me each time he is invited for National Award, he turns it down. How sure are we that he will not turn down Nobel Prize because I think it is only a lunatic that can turn down National Awards.
Are you trying to call the Great Chinua Achebe a lunatic? angry He turns down the National Awards for a reason. And he has stuck to those reasons for so long.

Let he who is without sin cast the first stone!

People are acting like the southwest is paradise. What about the armed robbery epidemic and the "do or die" politics that is practiced in that region? No where in Nigeria is safe.

The people of Agbor claim Igbo when it is beneficial for them. However, a good amount of them consider themselves a Bini offshoot. This is the farthest extent of Igboland in the former Midwest region. When an Ika man speaks in his dialect, I cannot understand a word he is saying. It doesn't even sound Igbo.

Anyway, the story is still sad.  cry cry cry

God help this country.

The truth needs to come out for wounds to heal. I have asked this question recently, that why do we not remember the civil war. It is part of our history, and people need to be reminded of what happend
That is the truth. Nigerian students are not taught about the intricacies of the conflict. And the atrocities committed in the war is not known to many unless they are from that particular region. I did not know about the massacre at Asaba until I was 16, in which I had made a friend from Asaba and he told me stories that were passed down to him about what had happened in Asaba during the Civil War.

Achebe's response to Conrad's book was well received.

But "The Trouble With Nigeria"? Sorry, that would actually diminish. . . A better one would be the slender "Home and Exile".

Achebe is great, but his body of work is quite rather thin . . .
Ok, so his literary works is very thin. I understand that, but I like quality over quantity. The man's novels speak for themselves.

Let me give you one example of a positive critque of Things Fall Apart.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Things Fall Into Place
by Eric J. Lyman

The more the reader thinks about Things Fall Apart, the more he becomes aware that the heart of a story is about the struggles of an individual and less about what is a compelling and unsentimental survey of Nigeria's Ibo culture just before the arrival of white settlers.

The story's protagonist is Okonkwo, who at first appears to be a model warrior and self-made man who slowly discovers that the attributes he believed would serve him well as an adult instead breed a fear of failure and profound frustration. He is a complex and heavy-handed head of his household who is at once sympathetic and cruel.

Most of the story is told before the actual appearance of the first white settlers, but their pending arrival hangs over the middle part of the book like a rain cloud. By the time it actually happens in the last 50 or so pages of the book, Okonkwo has been driven into exile, his life a shambles. He has only a slim hope of redemption, and that is shattered by the arrival of the settlers.

Okonkwo's story is a relevant one even at a time when cultural and political imperialism has turned away from Africa toward the Middle East, Latin America, and Eastern Europe. But more important than its relevance is its artistry: it is a deceptively simple epic tale somehow packed into just over 200 pages, and one of the most impressive first novels on record. Don't miss it.

And the book has deservedly won awards; and, too, several other books meet the criterion of being widely read; this by itself isn't a sufficient condition for the Nobel in Literature. . . and, thinking of it . . . the Nobel in Literature, for one novel??
Things Fall Apart is not actually his best novel in my honest opinion. It is a good novel, but that title should go to Arrow of God.

And his literary criticism of Conrad's Heart of Darkness, An Image of Africa: Racism in Conrad's "Heart of Darkness," was a masterpiece. Let us not forget his political commentary, The Trouble With Nigeria.

Just, because he is not pumping out books like Stephen King, does not take away the contribution that Chinua Achebe has done in the world of literature.

That cannot be understated! His novel was thee first to speak from the African Perspective.

i want to ask u a question

if jonathan wins, how do u expect igbos to be president 2015 or 2019
Frankly, I could care less. As long as the person provides improvements to the Southeast, then I have no problem with them. I do not care if the person is Ijaw, Yoruba, Hausa, Kanuri etc. As long as they improve my region, they will have my support. Having an Igbo president may not necessarily mean improvement for my region.

I want the most qualified person for the job. I do not want to see previous looters in office. GEJ has my support.

Its a pity easterners dont like telling the truth!! Though i will never support killing of innocent people, but a situation whereby docile posters like dede come here to post junks can not be condoned. Why could you be blaming AWOLOWO when he was not the person that started the war, AWOLOWO diplomatically wanted ibos to win the war in the early stages, but have to change sides when the rather blood thirty ojukwu the bingo wanted to overrun his people or  its only Gowon that lives in lagos? Didnt YORUBA people got killed by the invading biafra troops at ore? So you ethnic bigots expect AWOLOWO in his capacity as the undisputed leader of YORUBA land fold his arms and let ojukwu the bingo override his people? The fact remains ojukwu is the remote cause of any bereavement unleashed on ibos during the war.
What is up with this tribal banting? Do no sully this memorial project of people young and old who were slaughtered by Nigerian troops. This thread is not about Awolowo, it is about the Asaba victims. Awolowo has nothing to do with this slaughter of innocent Igbos. You see people were mentioning Murtala Mohammed who was enshrined on the Naira. Now shut the hell up and leave my thread. Dumb arse fool.

Who do you blame for this then? You are not making any sense still. We are struggling to keep alive those we currently have today, yet you advocate we increase our population? Do you know how many die each year of deaths that they ought not to . . . the many that starve to death, die of preventable diseases and careless causes? you want more lives to so we can record more deaths? is that what you want?
There is multiple factors to why we cannot feed ourselves. Over reliance on aid, conditionalities on loans from the World Bank etc. But I think you know why Africans cannot feed themselves like they should. There is no one person to blame.

We have not been able to feed, even 1/40th of the black mouths we have( considering the many deaths and all), and you think it makes sense to argue that we need more black people to compete?
The reason we cannot feed these black mouths is, because we grow export crops and also we do not use our land wisely. Africa should be the bread basket of the world.

How is that disturbing?

We need more black people in this world. We already lost 100 million black souls during the Middle Passage.
