Literature / Re: Chimamanda Adichie Upset About Hillary Clinton's "Wife" Bio On Twitter by Fadedjeans: 9:28pm On Apr 23, 2018
Xisnin:

How does the society benefits by a woman calling herself "wife"?

And how doesn't the society benefit when a woman calls herself wife? The point isn't whether or not the society benefits. Like someone said earlier a world where people aren't described by various appendages is most desirable; just be who you want to be. And rightly so, Clinton chose to agree with Adichie on this one. Another might have disagreed and it still wouldn't make them less of who they are. I think the whole point is to be objective in the end regardless of whatever values or ideologies we try to promote

okay. I specifically chose women with natural hair, weaves, make up, no makeup to be as relatable as possible. Women with all facial features, to promote what I stand for. You could’ve helped me by uploading ‘relatable’ pictures if it meant something to you. The message at the end of the day is to embrace your blackness the best way you possibly can. When getting inspiration, you look at the best of things to lift you up. That’s all I will say.

I totally understand. As for the pictures, I thought about posting one of mine but I decided against it. Seeing what already had been uploaded. That's the complex I know majority out there are struggling with. But as you have said, embrace your blackness as best as you can. Cheers.

Safiaaa:
What is unrelatable about those pictures? Can you please tell me. These are everyday black women who manage to take care of themselves and embrace who they are. What is unrelatable about that?
.

Okay, I'll give an instance. The contoured noses, that's one example. I'm not saying that I have a problem with makeup, but that's not what the average black woman looks like. So I'm saying if you're going to support your article with pictures, bring it as close to home as possible. Post pictures of women with their 'big and broad noses' and help them understand that they are beautiful regardless. That's one way to deal with the problem. If I were to encourage my fellow women and then I see those pictures you have put up, I'm going to post pictures that I feel are similar. Not one that reflects what I truly look like. That's what I meant by society's standard and that they were unrelatable.

@op, even though I know this thread was meant to encourage black women, who often times are criticized for their looks. I feel that to the average black woman, those pictures you posted are unrelatable. That's just society's standard of what beauty or should I say 'black beauty' is. Perhaps an article without pictures would have sufficed. Believe me when I say that to the average black woman who has ever felt bad or insecure about her looks, those pictures are totally unrelatable.

Just google Commonwealth writers. You need to try first, that's the only way you can find out.

hmmm... but who patronises story writers these days?

You see, these are things you can research on. There's actually a competition going on right now(common wealth writers). You have to write a fictional story of about 5000 words maximum. You can enter it, entry closes 1st of November. Your life might make a good story. Write about it but try to be as distinct as possible. Use different times, locations etc even if you're writing about yourself.

I started writing a journal about my life, I hope to publish it someday. I figured if I could channel my energy into writing, it'd take my mind off my fears and insecurities. Your life seems interesting enough, trust me, even with all the negativity. And you write well, you're witty. You'll be fine.

Ignorant people everywhere. She could have hit him somewhere delicate and fragile. This is why men rarely speak up in cases of domestic violence because they'd be seen as weak. The tables have turned this time around and it is equally as bad. I hope they investigate his death and if she's indeed guilty, her ass should be locked up and the keys thrown away.

True! Well what can I say? I love NL and when I'll leave, I'll do so on my own account and not because I feel stressed out trying to keep up with the perks of being popular on a public forum. I think I can boldly take-on whatever challenges I'm faced with. Whether here or offline. Thank God for another day. Good morning. smiley

Good for you, embracing the life of a celebrity cheesy. Good morning.

LOL, that's the thing.. When I try to be politically correct, I'm only trying to sit on the fence and not offend my friends. From the bottom of my heart, I really do not have any fück to give those who dedicate time to create threads and cuss themselves out. I would have had time for that some 2-3 years ago, but certainly not now. Been on NL for quite long, long enough to make loads of friends who's various options may differ from mine. That's why I tailor my words. Not because I care who's pant is being torn.

And in the aspect of being cautious, you're not far from the truth. I think I sieve the people I choose as friends on here these days, even though, I may be doing it unconsciously. Thank God for lessons learnt. smiley

I figured. Big sigh... I don't envy you. I'm a very 'unsocial' media person and if I ever have to put in as much effort as you do to fit in on any social media platform, then I'd leave. That's why I'm never really here nor there on nairaland. There are people I admire on nairaland, but a follower is the closest I'll ever be to them in terms of friendship. It's easier that way.

With all the threads in your name, surely you must feel like a king cheesy. You shouldn't really care though. See it as a comic relief, especially when people lose sleep over something you're unapologetic about. I guess you've become very cautious after what happened between you and your group. In truth you shouldn't really care about what people think or say about you, this is just the internet after all. Unless you feel guilty or are a conformist.

The ministry is moving. Hopefully like nairaland, they garner enough publicity across other social media platforms to promote whatever new single, album, tour or project they are working on. But if it's real, they shouldn't fail to entertain us with more videos like this.

Ibori that went to prison is now a haemaphrodite

Help me ask her. I like her a lot but sometimes her opinions come across as irrelevant and unobjective. If she's saying this to please a certain audience, then it doesn't make sense. Most people reacted the way they did because of the enormity of the crime she committed and not because she is a woman. There are proofs that she embezzled and misappropriated public funds and she has to be accountable for it.

It's not "name-calling" if it's true. If I used the adjective 'tall' on Yao Ming (the basketballer), it's not 'name-calling' but merely me stating an obvious truth.

Since you say her topic was meant to be open to different opinions then why did she attack my opinion when she said that I was trying too hard to impress, and why aren't you chastising her instead, after all she is also guilty of name-calling? Your critic is grossly biased.

Just because you think so doesn't make it 'true'. The example you gave of the basketballer doesn't relate to this at all. It's correct to use the adjective tall to qualify him 'cause obviously he is tall. However, calling her simple minded, too average and ordinary isn't the truth. That's just your own perception of her. I'm not attacking you ' cause you have a different opinion from hers, but because instead of just countering her opinion like you did, you went further and called her names. Attack the message and not the messenger. If for anything, I think because she was able to come out to state her opinion, albeit a bit flawed, as you rightly pointed out, she is not simple minded but only more open to learn.

Why do all your advice always border on the topic of boy-girl relationships and marriage? Is it that your existence is built around those things? Or is it because you're only mentally capable of dealing with those sort of triffling issues?

You're trying too hard to impress Nairaland males (and men in general), or is that not the purpose of this thread? To subtly advertise that you would make a very ''homely wife" – an euphemism for "domesticated pet".

Why not learn to live for yourself (and not for men), to aspire for greater things, rather than slaving your entire existence in a pathetic bid to be seen as "marriable" by men?

You are too basic and simple-minded, just like many Nigerian girls out there. Too simple, too average, too ordinary.

Very unnecessary. You don't have to be condescending to sound smart and intellectual. Fyi, it's okay to be ''too simple, too average, too ordinary''. Not everyone can be overly intelligent or extraordinary. She put up a harmless topic, and was open to different opinions. There were other people that had different opinions but didn't resort to name calling.
