Crime › Bandits Kill 16 Vigilante Members, Abduct 42 Residents In Niger by Fareke(op): 8:00am On Nov 15, 2025 |
Bandits have attacked communities in Mashegu local government area of Niger State, killing about 16 vigilante members and abducting 42 residents.
The attacks, according to a source, took place between Sunday, November 9 and Thursday, November 13, 2025, leaving several communities deserted as people fled to other communities for their safety.
According to him, “The bandits first stormed Dutsen Magaji village on Sunday and abducted 22 people.”

He stated that some vigilantes followed them, not knowing the bandits had laid an ambush, pointing out that the bandits opened fire and 13 vigilantes were killed, and several others were injured.
In a statement, the Press Secretary to the chairman of Mashegu LGA, Isah Ibrahim Bokuta, confirmed the killings, describing the fallen vigilantes as heroes who sacrificed their lives in defence of their communities,

Foreign Affairs › Trump Pens Letter Asking Israeli President To Pardon Netanyahu In Corruption Tri by Fareke(op): 7:29pm On Nov 13, 2025 |
By Tal Shalev US President Trump penned a letter asking the Israeli president to grant a full pardon to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in his ongoing corruption trial. In a letter distributed by the Israeli president’s spokesperson, Trump wrote, “I hereby call on you to fully pardon Benjamin Netanyahu, who has been a formidable and decisive War Time Prime Minister, and is now leading Israel into a time of peace.” For any other president, the letter would be an unusual intervention in the domestic politics of a foreign country. But it’s only Trump’s latest effort to intervene on behalf of one of his most vocal international supporters. Netanyahu faces charges of fraud, bribery, and breach of trust in three separate cases which began in Trump’s first term. He has entered a plea of not guilty and maintains his innocence. “While I absolutely respect the independence of the Israeli Justice System, and its requirements, I believe that the ‘case’ against Bibi, who has fought alongside me for a long time, including against the very tough adversary of Israel, Iran, is a political, unjustified prosecution,” Trump wrote in the letter. Despite the ceremonial nature of the role, Herzog has the power to issue pardons. But the request must come from the individual accused of wrongdoing, their legal representatives or a family member. Neither Netanyahu nor any of his close associates have submitted such a petition. In a statement, Herzog’s office said that he holds Trump “in high regard” and appreciates his “unwavering support of Israel, his immense contribution to the return of the hostages, the transformation of the Middle East and Gaza, and the safeguarding of Israel’s security”. But Herzog’s office also said that “anyone seeking a pardon must submit a request in accordance with the established procedures.” Trump has weighed in on Netanyahu’s trial several times before. In June, after the 12-day war between Israel and Iran, he wrote a lengthy post on Truth Social in which he called Netanyahu’s trial a “ridiculous witch hunt,” echoing language he’s used about his own legal threats. And last month, during his short trip to Israel, Trump raised the issue of a pardon during his address to Israel’s parliament. Turning to Herzog seated nearby, he said, “Mr. President, why don’t you give him a pardon?” https://edition.cnn.com/2025/11/12/middleeast/trump-netanyahu-pardon-letter-intl

Politics › Trump Threats: Tinubu Rallies Foreign Allies As North Rejects Sharia Ban by Fareke(op): 5:24am On Nov 07, 2025 |
President Bola Tinubu on Thursday said his government was engaging with the world diplomatically following remarks by U.S. President Donald Trump, who threatened military action against terror groups in Nigeria over the alleged mass killing of Christians.
This was a coalition of northern elders that rejected calls by some U.S. right-wing lawmakers to ban Sharia law in the country.
"We assure all of you that we will defeat terrorism in this country,” Tinubu said at Thursday’s meeting held at the Council Chamber of the State House, Abuja, the first since July.
Tinubu stated that Nigeria remains on a steady growth trajectory, with more promise of stability and prosperity as economic reforms continue to yield results and gain national and international acceptance.
On the current state of the economy and the relationship between Nigeria and the United States, President Tinubu assured, “The most important thing is the fact that despite the political headwinds and the fear of our people, we will continue to engage with partners.
The success of the $2.3bn eurobond that was oversubscribed by 400 per cent is the most assuring. So, the task ahead is immense; we are engaging the world diplomatically, and we assure all of you that we will defeat terrorism in this country.”
"The task ahead is immense, but it is our resolve to move forward with unity and purpose, guided by the Renewed Hope Agenda to build a prosperous, inclusive and resilient Nigeria,” he further stated.
Tinubu’s remarks come just days after U.S. President Donald Trump threatened military action against terror groups in Nigeria over the alleged mass killing of Christians.
Trump, in a post on his social media platform on Friday, announced that he was labelling Nigeria a “Country of Particular Concern.”
Hours later, he said he had instructed congressional Republicans to “immediately look into this matter” and report back to him.
On Saturday, Trump said he had ordered the U.S. Department of War to “prepare for possible action” in Nigeria over the country’s alleged killing of Christians.
Speaking on Thursday, Tinubu called Ministers and other officials to ensure consistency in communication and avoid discordant messaging.
Nigeria calm, not in panic mode—FG
Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, who addressed State House correspondents after the Council meeting, said the Federal Government was calm and would not panic over Trump’s threats.
Idris said the government had opened formal diplomatic channels with the U.S. to address the matter.
He also clarified that Nigeria is responding responsibly and strategically, in line with its constitutional obligation to protect all citizens regardless of religion or ethnicity.
“But there is no panic mode here. We are responding responsibly, steadily, and in the interest of our country, also taking into account the concerns both from within and outside this country of what the situation in this,” Idris told journalists at the Aso Rock Villa.
Responding to whether the U.S. position is affecting governance at home, the Information Minister said discussions have commenced with American officials through appropriate diplomatic channels.
He insisted that Nigeria prefers a diplomatic resolution rather than escalating rhetoric.
“Have we had any discussions with the U.S.? Yes. Channels have been opened. We prefer that this situation be solved diplomatically,” he said.
"Let me say that the government of Nigeria is really very stable.
"The President is calm. Like we have said, he’s calm. The Federal Executive Council members are indeed very calm.
“That is not to discountenance the issue. We are not saying that,” he noted.
Idris insisted the Tinubu administration is not indifferent to the challenges.
"Are there security issues in the country? Yes. Are lives being lost? Yes. But is the government responding? Absolutely,” he said, adding, “We are confronting these problems with responsibility and balance.”
The Minister reiterated that Nigeria remains a pluralistic society where freedom of religion is constitutionally protected.
"But let me say for the umpteenth time, Nigeria is a country that has tolerance for religion. So whatever you practice, whatever is your faith, our Constitution guarantees that you are free to practice that. The Nigerian government will continue to impress on the security agencies to maintain law and order wherever they are. We’re also going to do more so that whatever concerns there are, the government of Nigeria will take care of those concerns,” he said.
The Tinubu administration, he said, remains open to partnerships with the international community and regional actors in tackling terrorism and extremist violence, which he noted are not unique to Nigeria. https://punchng.com/trump-threats-tinubu-rallies-foreign-allies-as-north-rejects-sharia-ban/

An American criminal defense attorney and former state and federal prosecutor, Ron Filipkowski, has raised concerns over the mental stability of United States President Donald Trump following the latter’s recent remarks suggesting possible military action against Nigeria. In a post shared on his X (formerly Twitter) account on Sunday, Filipkowski reacted to Trump’s statement on potential U.S. intervention in Nigeria, saying, “At some point, we might have to consider the fact that he might be mentally unstable.” Filipkowski’s comments followed Trump’s directive to the U.S. Department of War to begin preparations for what he described as a possible military strike against Nigeria. The U.S. president accused the Nigerian government of “failing to protect Christians” amid ongoing attacks in parts of the country. In a message posted on his Truth Social account on Saturday, Trump said the United States would immediately suspend all aid and assistance to Nigeria if, according to him, the killing of Christians continued. He further hinted at a potential military intervention to, in his words, “completely wipe out the Islamic terrorists” allegedly responsible for the violence. Trump wrote, “If the Nigerian Government continues to allow the killing of Christians, the U.S.A. will immediately stop all aid and assistance to Nigeria, and may very well go into that now disgraced country, guns-a-blazing, to completely wipe out the Islamic terrorists who are committing these horrible atrocities.” The American president further directed the Department of War to begin necessary preparations, declaring that any response would be “fast, vicious, and sweet.” He warned the Nigerian government to act swiftly to prevent further violence against Christian communities, claiming that Christianity in Nigeria faces an existential threat. Trump’s statement has drawn widespread reactions in both the U.S. and Nigeria. Many observers view his comments as reckless and potentially destabilizing, while others see them as a reflection of his longstanding narrative that positions the U.S. as a global defender of Christianity. Tribune Online recalls that during his previous administration, Trump designated Nigeria as a “country of particular concern” over alleged violations of religious freedom. He also urged the U.S. Congress to investigate what he called the persecution of Christians in Nigeria. Trump reiterated over the weekend that the United States “will not stand by” while Christians face attacks anywhere in the world, insisting that his government remains ready to defend Christian populations globally. However, Filipkowski’s remarks have reignited debates in Washington about Trump’s temperament and decision-making as he pursues another term in office. Several political commentators described the suggestion of military action against an allied African nation as “unprecedented” and “deeply troubling.” https://prnigeria.com/2025/11/02/threat-invade-nigeria-trump/

Politics › Marketers Reduce Fuel Prices As FG Shuts Down Economy In Honour Of Buhari by Fareke(op): 7:19am On Jul 15, 2025 |
Nigerian petroleum products marketers have announced a reduction of premium motor spirit prices, starting from today, Tuesday.
This comes as the economy shuts down today owing to the public holiday declared by the federal government to honour ex-president Muhammadu Buhari.
The national president of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria, Abubakar Maigandi, disclosed this to DAILY POST in an interview on Monday.
According to him, the decision to cut the petrol price comes after members of IPMAN held a meeting in Abuja on Monday in response to Dangote Refinery’s ex-depot price drop to N820 per litre from N840.
Maigandi noted that most of its members have agreed to review their retail price of petrol downward from Tuesday.
Specifically, Maigandi said IPMAN members in Abuja will, from Tuesday, dispense petrol between N900 and N920 per litre, down from N905 and N945.
"We met on Tuesday and agreed to reduce petrol price to between N900 and N920 per litre for our members in Abuja, north central.
“Similarly, our members in some other parts of the country will be selling below around N860 and N890 per litre.
“Nigerians are happy because there has been a reduction in the price of fuel in the past weeks,” he told DAILY POST on Monday.
The development coincides with a public holiday declared by the federal government to honour Buhari, who will receive a statewide burial on Tuesday in Daura, Katsina State, following his death in London on Sunday, July 14th, 2025.
IPMAN had earlier hinted at a fuel price reduction last week.
Recall that Dangote Refinery barely a week ago had announced a reduction in its fuel ex-depot pump price to N820 from N840 per litre.
DAILY POST reports the 650,000-barrel-per-day has reduced fuel prices two times in July alone.
Petrol marketers have attributed the petrol price reduction by Africa’s largest refinery to the gains of liberalizing the downstream sector.
The reduction comes amid falling global crude oil prices, which stood at $69.10 and $66.98 per barrel for Brent and West Texas Intermediate crude futures as of the time of filing the report on Monday, from above $70. https://dailypost.ng/2025/07/15/nigerian-marketers-reduce-fuel-prices-as-fg-shuts-down-economy-in-honour-of-buhari/

Foreign Affairs › Church Leaders, Diplomats, Condemn Israeli Settler Violence In West Bank by Fareke(op): 7:47pm On Jul 14, 2025 |
By FERNANDA PESCE and JULIA FRANKEL TAYBEH, West Bank (AP) — Top church leaders in the Holy Land asserted Monday that Israeli authorities “facilitate and enable” the presence of Israeli settlers who have intensified attacks in recent weeks on the only entirely Christian Palestinian village remaining in the occupied West Bank. Speaking in the village, Taybeh, on a rare solidarity visit, Greek Orthodox Patriarch Theophilos III and Latin Patriarch Pierbattista Pizzaballa denounced an incident last week when settlers set fires near the community’s church. They alleged that Israeli authorities failed to respond to emergency calls for help from the Palestinian community. In a separate statement, the patriarchs and heads of churches in Jerusalem demanded an investigation into the incident and called for the settlers to be held accountable by the Israeli authorities, “who facilitate and enable their presence around Taybeh.” The church leaders also claimed that settlers had brought their cattle to graze on Palestinian lands in the area, set fire to several homes last month and put up a sign reading “there is no future for you here.” Israel’s military did not immediately respond to the allegations. It has previously said it takes action against outlaw settlers and that many incidents of settler violence involve stone-throwing and clashes between Israeli settlers and Palestinians. The war in Gaza has sparked a surge of violence in the West Bank, with the Israeli military targeting militants in large-scale operations that have killed hundreds of Palestinians and displaced tens of thousands. That has coincided with a rise in settler violence and Palestinian attacks on Israelis. Palestinian militants have attacked and killed Israelis in Israel and the West Bank. Pizzaballa, the top Catholic cleric in Jerusalem, said he believed the West Bank was becoming a lawless area. “The only law (in the West Bank) is that of power, of those who have the force, not the law. We must work for the law to return to this part of the country, so anyone can appeal to the law to enforce their rights,” Pizzaballa told reporters. He and Theophilos prayed together in the church of St. George, whose religious site dates back centuries, adjacent to the area where settlers ignited the fires. The statement from the heads of churches comes as Palestinians report a surge of settler violence. On Sunday, hundreds descended on the village of Al-Mazraa a-Sharqiya, south of Taybeh, for the funeral of two young men killed during a settler attack on Friday. The Christian community in Israel and the Palestinian territories has dwindled as a percentage of the overall population over the decades, with experts citing lower birthrates and emigration by people fleeing conflict or seeking better opportunities abroad. Christians now make up a tiny percentage of the population. Crime › Nigerian, Wife Sentenced For $3m Romance Scam Targeting US Seniors by Fareke(op): 5:14am On Jul 06, 2025 |
A Nigerian illegal alien and his wife have been sentenced to federal prison for orchestrating a multi-million-dollar fraud scheme that preyed on elderly Americans, leaving some emotionally shattered and financially devastated. Darlington Akporugo, 47, and his wife, Jasmin Sood, 37, were sentenced in late June to more than 15 and 10 years behind bars, respectively, according to a recent report from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Both were reportedly residing in Houston illegally. Akporugo, identified as the ringleader, was sentenced to 188 months, while Sood received 121 months. Both pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud after running a years-long scam that conned elderly victims—many of them widows—out of more than $3 million. Upon release, both will serve three years of supervised release and have been ordered to repay the full amount stolen. "Romance scams and other financial schemes like this exploit our nation’s elderly and vulnerable populations out of their hard-earned retirement savings,” said Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) Houston Special Agent Chad Plantz. "They are often left emotionally devastated and financially ruined, with limited options for recovery once the money has been laundered out of the U.S.,” Plantz added. Court records indicate Akporugo posed as a romantic interest online, using fake names and stories to convince older women to send him money, purchase luxury goods, and open lines of credit. In one instance, a victim was convinced to purchase a luxury vehicle and rent a mansion—both of which the couple used for themselves. Authorities eventually arrested the couple while they were driving the car and living in the rented home funded by one of their victims. Victims described being manipulated with elaborate lies and false promises, only to watch their life savings disappear. Law enforcement identified more than 25 victims across the country, from Chicago to Kentucky. The stolen funds were funneled through shell companies and hidden accounts that Sood helped create using aliases and disguises, according to ICE. https://thenationonlineng.net/nigerian-wife-sentenced-for-3m-romance-scam-targeting-us-seniors/amp/

Politics › We Are Rebuilding Trust Across Nigeria – Tinubu by Fareke(op): 9:19am On Jul 05, 2025 |
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Friday said his administration is not just building roads but rebuilding the foundation of public trust in inclusive governance alongside physical infrastructure across the country.
Tinubu reaffirmed that the projects his administration is executing are evidence of what he described as a quiet revolution transforming the FCT under the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
The President stated this while commissioning the newly rehabilitated Aguma Palace–Radio Nigeria–New Market Road in Gwagwalada Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Represented by the Vice President Kashim Shettima, the president said, “We are not just rehabilitating roads. We are rehabilitating trust. The transformation unfolding across the Federal Capital Territory is the product of deliberate reforms and the bold, reform-oriented policies of this Administration. By expanding the revenue base of the FCT, we are investing in roads, schools, hospitals, and people.”
He emphasized that the FCT, often perceived as synonymous with Abuja city centre, is undergoing a quiet revolution under the Renewed Hope Agenda, driven by deliberate reforms and people-focused investments.
“For too long, those who live beyond the city centre have watched development happen from a distance. They have watched their dreams of inclusion delayed by excuses, and their hopes deferred by shifting priorities. But we are here today to rewrite that story,” President Tinubu noted.
The President stressed that his administration is focused on reaching communities that have long felt abandoned.
He said, “What brings us together on this historic day is more than a road. It is a reminder that no community under this Administration is too far to be seen, and no voice too faint to be heard”.
Tinubu also revealed that the newly commissioned road was not arbitrarily chosen by government officials, but was nominated by the people of Gwagwalada themselves, a testament to his administration’s commitment to participatory governance.
"This is the kind of democracy we believe in – one that listens, responds, and delivers. This road is a corridor of dignity for the market woman, a path to safety for our schoolchildren, and a route to prosperity for the hardworking trader,” the President said.
Describing the infrastructure as both functional and transformative, the President said the road would ease the movement of goods and people, improve access to education and healthcare, and unlock the economic potential of rural dwellers.
“The days of empty promises and abandoned projects are behind us. We are not just building infrastructure. We are building confidence in governance,” he said.
He also paid tribute to the Minister of the FCT, Barrister Nyesom Wike, for his strong leadership and commitment to results.
“One such person making this possible is Barrister Nyesom Wike. I thank him for proving that disruption is not a threat to order but a requirement for progress. This project is not just a symbol of government presence. It is your project. It belongs to the people of Gwagwalada. We are determined to ensure that development is not a privilege reserved for the few but a right enjoyed by all.
“This Administration remains committed to projects that speak directly to the lives of the people. We are focused on creating an enabling environment for businesses to grow, for families to thrive, and for communities to prosper,” he added.
Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Nyesom Wike, faulted opposition politicians for forming a coalition just 18 months after the inauguration of President Bola Tinubu in 2023, adding that barely six months into his administration.
Wike challenged members of the coalition—who recently adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as their platform for the 2027 general elections—to present their scorecards and show Nigerians what they achieved while in office, instead of claiming that Nigerians were angry.
"I never asked anyone, but they said the coalition started 18 months ago. Mr. President has only been in office for two years. So, you started a coalition when he was barely six months in office?
“Eighteen months ago, you started a coalition—six months into his tenure? When will you stop deceiving Nigerians? Someone had only been in office for six months, and you had already begun forming a coalition claiming he hadn’t performed?”
Wike said members of the coalition including former Governor of Rivers State and ex-Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, and former Senate President David Mark, were simply angry because they were out of power.
He insisted they would not be allowed to return, challenging them to present a record of their achievements.
Wike said; “I have said it before everybody, show your scorecard. When I was Senate President, let me show my scorecard. How did I help the people of Benue State? How did I help the people of Otukpo? We’ve been here 16 days and we’re already showing our scorecard.
“Operation ‘show your scorecard.’ God gave you the opportunity to be in office and make Nigerians happy, yet, according to you, you refused.
"Now that you’ve left the office, you are angry. You say Nigerians are angry. No, you are angry because you’re no longer in power. You want to come back. But you won’t. You will not return to power.”
Wike also criticized the coalition’s support for former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, accusing him of constantly switching political parties since 1999.
“In 2023, they said they would support one man, whose business since 1999 has been jumping from one party to another. In 1999, he was at a party. In 2006, another party. In 2014, he moved again. In 2019, he switched again. Now in 2025, he’s forming another coalition.
"Were you born into a coalition?” Wike asked.
The Minister of State for FCT, Mariya Mahmoud, explained that the commissioning of the road was a demonstration of their deep commitment to inclusive governance and infrastructure renewal in rural communities in FCT.
Thanking the President for his support and leadership, she noted that this has inspired infrastructural development across the nation and the FCT.
She commended Vice President Kashim Shettima for his support and encouragement, as well as the Senate President, noting also that without them, they would not have been able to commission projects in the FCT.
She stated that if not for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the joy shared by the community today wouldn’t have been possible, pointing out that the road had been in a very bad condition for several years, but the tears of the community have been wiped away by the present administration.
Also giving the overview of the project, Hon. Abdulkadir Zulkiflu, Coordinator, Satellite Town Development, FCT, said the commissioning marked a significant advancement in the infrastructural development in satellite towns in the FCT. https://thenationonlineng.net/we-are-rebuilding-trust-across-nigeria-tinubu/amp/
