By Francis Ugwu Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, LP, Mr Peter Obi, has described the Minister of Works, Dave Umahi’s allegation against him as unfounded accusations aimed at tarnishing his character. Obi said that claims of incitement by Umahi are baseless distractions, adding that he has always advocated for unity and advancement, refusing to partake in reactionary divisive politics. According to him, he will continue to insist that the national resources be applied with maximum frugality. The former Anambra State governor’s statement came as a response to Umahi’s claim that he (Obi) was inciting Igbos against the federal government. Umahi made the statement on Wednesday while speaking during a compensation for property owners affected by the Lagos-Calabar coastal road prospect. "When you condemn people, you bring judgement upon yourself. And that what he (Obi) has done. And I think he’s inciting some of the south east people that are not well informed. He is inciting them. And gets them into trouble. And he doesn’t go to fight for them. Wisdom is a defence. And I want our people to have wisdom because I am involved,” the minister said. However, in a post on his X handle on Thursday, Obi said his focus is on fostering constructive dialogue and inclusivity, rather than engaging in divisive politics. “Regarding allegations of incitement against the government, I firmly reject these unfounded accusations aimed at tarnishing my character. “My focus is on fostering constructive dialogue and inclusivity, rather than engaging in divisive politics. Claims of incitement are baseless distractions. I have always advocated for unity and advancement, refusing to partake in reactionary divisive politics. "I refuse to be reduced to the level of those who wallow in ethnic politics. Worse still, I have never and can never descend so low as to base my political aspirations on any sectional or ethnic interest. “My commitment to serving with integrity remains steadfast, and I encourage all Nigerians to unite for a prosperous future. In conclusion, I stand by my record as governor and reject any attempts to distort the narrative for political gain. "My commitment remains unwavering: to advocate for the rights and well-being of all Nigerians, ensuring that development initiatives prioritize the needs of the people. Most importantly, I will continue to insist that our national resources be applied with maximum frugality.” https://dailypost.ng/2024/05/02/your-claim-unfounded-aimed-at-tarnishing-my-character-peter-obi-fires-back-at-umahi/

By John Akinfehinwa Residents Doctors at the Federal Teaching Hospital Lokoja, FTHL on Thursday protested over the shortage of manpower and alleged obnoxious policies introduced by the management of the hospital led by Dr Olatunde Alabi. The protesting doctors carried placard with various inscriptions saying, ‘We want to work, not to work and die,’ don’t kill us, stop using no work no pay to threaten us, ‘Federal Teaching Hospital Lokoja doctors are dying help,” give us call meals,’ end casualization of doctors, “Federal Government, Mr President, come to our aide, among others. The Resident Doctors protested around the hospital premises to register their grievances against the management of the hospital. Addressing journalists, some of the protesting doctors who did not want their names in print over fear of victimization noted that their female colleagues have been losing their pregnancies because of too much workload. ” The management of Federal Teaching Hospital Lokoja has been very disappointing to us. One of the issues we have been raising with them for overtime is the shortage of manpower. I want to put it on record that in 2020, we had about 222 resident doctors in this hospital. "For over four years now, many of them have moved outside the shores of this country. Some moved to the consultant cadre while others resigned and moved to other centres. We are now left with only 64 Residents doctors. The workload keeps on increasing on daily basis. We have told the management to employ but they keep on telling us that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has refused to give him, (Chief Medical Director Federal Teaching Hospital Lokoja Dr Olatunde Alabi) a waiver to employ. "So we keep asking him, why has Mr President not given the CMD waiver to employ new resident doctors in the hospital? We asked them if they can’t employ, why can’t they reduce the workload, they said no. In this hospital, doctors are running 48 hours without a call meal. There is one devilish platform called Gifnis. The platform is so devilish that when doctors are put on that platform, they do not have access to their minimum wage and arrears. "This platform is being used as an excuse to casualize doctors. You won’t imagine that at this age and time, there will be hospitals that will employ doctors as locums. Locums are derogatory statements. They should not be used for doctors. ” President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is trying to make the health sector to be the first in the whole world and some people are employing doctors under a gifnis platform which is devilish and they are calling them casuals. They keep recycling their monthly salary. It shouldn’t be. "We want an end to the Gifnis platform for doctors in Federal Teaching Hospital Lokoja. We also want an end to the point where people will say they don’t have a waiver to employ doctors. There should be speedy advertisements for doctors and all arrears of doctors in Federal Teaching Hospital Lokoja should be paid. We are patriotic. Every worker deserves his reward and wages”. The Chairman, Nigeria Medical Association, NMA, Kogi State Dr Baoku Olusola who joined the Resident Doctor’s protest said, ” it is a sad day for us here in Kogi State. You can see that I am wearing black as much as all the doctors that are here. The doctors are angry and sad and of course, in extension, the NMA is sad because of the event that is actually taking place in Federal Teaching Hospital Lokoja. “We have been communicated three times in the last three months concerning the burning issues in Federal Teaching Hospital Lokoja. We have been hoping and praying the management of the hospital would have found a middle ground in resolving all this issue. "Yesterday was labour day and the Senate Present Godswill Akpabio said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has declared that no workers must be made to work under harsh, severe situations. So, we are expecting that the leadership and the management of Federal Teaching Hospital Lokoja will call these doctors who are patriotic enough to stay in this Country and do their work under very harsh conditions, meet with them, listen to them and be able to solve their problems. "People can not be on duty for 48 hours and there will be no food to eat. What if they collapse? Somebody resuscitating another can collapse. So who will resuscitate who? They are completely overworked. These doctors are fighting for their living wages. I can’t imagine that with all the things Mr President has put in place about workers, there are some doctors who are not getting 35,000 wage awards, doctors are being casualized on a platform called GIFMIS and so many problems going on in this hospital. "I am telling you, go and confirm, in FTHL, doctors are not getting their 35,000 wage award. There are piles of arrears for the past years that are not being paid to doctors. We are also aware that FTHL which has about 500 beds and runs on over 200 doctors now runs on 64 resident doctors. That is a collapse of a system” He called on the Federal Government led by President Ahmed Bola Tinubu to quickly intervene by addressing the demands of the resident doctors at the Federal Teaching Hospital Lokoja. "Things are going beyond what anybody could say. It will be peaceful anytime soon. Before these doctors will go and die one after the other or shut down the system, the federal government should quickly intervene and bring this problem to a reasonable end” he stated. The Resident doctors vowed to continue their protest until their demands are met by the management of the hospital. https://dailypost.ng/2024/05/02/doctors-protest-poor-working-conditions-shortage-of-manpower-in-kogi/ |
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has stated that Nigerian workers and citizens have been subjected to misery, hardship and insecurity in the last nine years by the All Progressives Congress (APC) government. The opposition party made this known in a statement signed by Debo Ologunagba, PDP National Publicity Secretary on Wednesday, congratulating Nigerian workers on this year’s International Workers’ Day. He noted that the ruling party wrecked the nation’s productive sectors and brought distress to the national life. He charged Nigerians to use their resilient spirit to resist all anti-people tendencies that seek to compromise and undermine the democratic tenets of freedom, rule of law, accountability and probity in the country. PDP also condemned the continuing increase in electricity tariff and price of petroleum products. The statement reads in part; "The PDP congratulates Nigerian workers on this year’s International Workers’ Day, charging them to use their resilient spirit to resist all anti-people tendencies that seek to compromise and undermine the democratic tenets of freedom, rule of law, accountability and probity in the country. "The PDP salutes Nigerian workers for remaining steadfast as real drivers of the national economy despite the asphyxiating and life-discounting conditions occasioned by the ill-implemented economic and fiscal policies of the All Progressives Congress (APC) administration. "Our party is deeply distraught that Nigerian workers and indeed millions of other citizens have, in the last nine years been subjected to misery, harrowing economic hardship and worsening insecurity by the rudderless and insensitive @OfficialAPCNg administrations, which have wrecked the nation’s productive sectors and brought distress to our national life. "The PDP particularly condemns the continuing increase in electricity tariff and price of petroleum products with petrol now selling at over N1000 per litre in various parts of the country; a situation that has resulted in astronomical increase in the cost of living and worsened the economic hardship in the country. "As the party of the people, the PDP demands that the APC-led Federal Government ends its insensitivity towards Nigerians and use the occasion of the Workers’ Day to review all its retrogressive policies and take urgent action towards addressing issues that have direct bearing to the welfare of the citizens. "The PDP however urges Nigerian workers and indeed all citizens not to give up hope but remain steadfast in their commitment towards a stable, united and prosperous nation, especially at this challenging time. "The party celebrates the workers and wishes them a happy Workers’ Day celebration." https://saharareporters.com/2024/05/01/petrol-selling-n1000-litre-apc-government-has-brought-distress-nigerians-pdp

Philip Shaibu, a former deputy governor of Edo State, has urged the residents of the state not to vote for a candidate that can’t speak their indigenous language. The impeached deputy governor made this call on Monday in Irrua, the administrative headquarters of the state's Esan Central Local Government Area, saying that he would only back a "homeboy" for governor. He went on to say that a candidate who needed an interpreter did not qualify as a homeboy since he couldn't speak the Edo dialect. He stated, “Today, we have decided that a homeboy that we know will become the governor of Edo State. You already know that Edo born in Lagos State is not a homeboy. “Is somebody who comes here with an interpreter a homeboy? So, if that is a minus it means we will look for a homeboy.” Although Shaibu did not name the candidate, the PDP's governorship candidate, Asue Ighodalo, had previously faced criticism for hiring an interpreter to announce his intentions to his kinsmen at a ward in Ewohimi, Esan South East Local Government Area of the state. IIghodalo was captured on film meeting with his kinsmen. In the video, Ighodalo, who was running for the PDP ticket at the time, addressed the crowd in English and asked for their support, as an interpreter translated his words into Esan. Also speaking, the party’s National Vice Chairman, South-South Zone, Dan Orbih, vowed not to campaign for the party if the crisis in the party is not solved. Orbih said the re-election of Godwin Obaseki has only brought pain and anger to members of the party and the people of the state at large. “In Edo State PDP, all is not well. Until I see concrete steps taken by the PDP government in the state to address all those issues that we have raised in the cause of our campaigns, until I see concrete steps to address the promises we made to the Edo people, I will not be able to face anybody to say, vote the PDP at the next election. "If they can treat you the way they treated you, you can imagine what it will be if we allow them to continue. I can see pain and anger in the faces of our people and members. I can not pretend to say all is well and I have come out clearly to decline to serve in the Edo State PDP governorship Campaign Council. My decision is based on how I feel. Members of the PDP were badly treated after the re-election of Godwin Obaseki,” he stated. Prior to the PDP governorship primary election, Obaseki and Shaibu, along with their supporters had been in disagreement over who would be the PDP’s candidate. Ighodalo, however, emerged as the winner of the PDP primary election with Shaibu being impeached as the deputy governor of the state. This, however, deepens the division within the state chapter of the party as opposition gathers within the party against Obaseki and the party’s candidate. https://saharareporters.com/2024/05/01/we-wont-back-obasekis-candidate-who-needs-interpreter-edo-governor-philip-shaibu-vows

More than 8,000 humans – men, women and children – remain buried under rubble, denied in death the dignity they have been denied in life, along with the hundreds of bodies exhumed and defiled by Israel’s destruction of cemeteries and graves in Gaza as it continues bulldozing land to create a so-called “buffer zone”, in a blatant attempt at the acquisition of land by force. Again, Israel’s Minister of National Security , alongside dozens of other Israeli officials who participated in a “Return to Gaza” conference on 28 January, called for ethnic cleansing of Gaza and building Israeli settlements there. |

Gabriel1992:In the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, the casualty toll has risen to 370 Palestinians killed, including 94 children, and 4,386 injured since 7 October. In this month alone, 61 Palestinians, including 13 children, were killed by the Israeli occupation forces and/or settlers in raids targeting refugee camps in particular, including in Jenin, where yesterday Israeli occupation forces invaded a hospital and executed three men inside. |
general111:Yet Israel has ignored this order, permitting and commanding its ruthless occupying forces and settler militias continue to kill, maim and wreak more havoc and destruction, deliberately endangering the survival of Palestinian civilians and bent on inflicting maximum pain and loss. Israel’s Prime Minister states: “No one will stop us, not The Hague, not the axis of evil and not anyone else”. Thus, another month of non-stop horrors has brought the casualty toll to 26,751 Palestinians killed and 65,636 persons injured by the Israeli occupation forces’ bombardments in Gaza. Newton2024:The Israeli state has “loosened” its military rules of engagement, essentially giving its soldiers the green light to kill anyone they encounter inside the Gaza Strip as part of their ground operations. Israeli politicians and soldiers are talking openly about turning Gaza into dust, eliminating Palestinians, and imagining Israeli settlers living on land that used to be called Gaza. Palestinians are being deliberately deprived of all the basic necessities for life, including food, water, shelter and medical care. Bombs from the air are indiscriminately killing and maiming Palestinians. Palestinians are being encouraged to leave their lands and homes in northern Gaza and head towards the south – Israel clearly wants to colonise northern Gaza and turn it into a security or military zone, permanently expelling the Palestinians who currently live there. |

President Bola Tinubu said the subsidy was removed to prevent Nigeria from going bankrupt. Tinubu stated this while speaking as one of the panelists at the ongoing World Economic Forum in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia on Sunday. The World Economic Forum meeting focuses on Global Collaboration, Growth and Energy for Development. Recall that President Tinubu announced the removal of subsidy on petrol the day he was inaugurated into office. The policy, however, saw prices of commodities spike, with an increased hardship in the country. Speaking on the petrol subsidy removal, President Tinubu said it was needed to reset the economy. He said, “For Nigeria, we are immensely consistent with belief that the economic collaboration and inclusiveness is necessary to engender stability in the rest of the world. "Concerning the question of the subsidy removal, there is no doubt that it was a necessary action for my country not to go bankrupt, to reset the economy and pathway to growth,” Tinubu said. Tinubu said he was convinced it was in the best interest of the people. He said, “It is going to be difficult, but the hallmark of leadership is taking difficult decision at the time it ought to be taken decisively. That was necessary for the country. "Yes, there will be blowback, there is expectation that the difficulty in it will be felt by greater number of the people, but once I believe it is their interest that is the focus of the government, it is easier to manage and explain the difficulties. "Along the line, there is a parallel arrangement to really cushion the effect of the subsidy removal on the vulnerable population of the country. We share the pain across board, we cannot but include those who are vulnerable. "Luckily, we have a very vibrant youthful population interested in discoveries by themselves and they are highly ready for technology, good education committed to growth. "We are able to manage that and partition the economic drawback and the fallout of subsidy removal.” Tinubu said the fuel subsidy removal equally engendered accountability, transparency and physical discipline for the country. According to Tinubu, that is more important to focus on what direction the country should go. On the exchange rate unification, President Tinubu said the management of the nation’s currency by the government was as well necessary to allow the Naira compete favourably with other world currencies. He said, “The currency management was necessary equally to remove the artificial elements of value in our currency. Let our local currency find its level and compete with the rest of the world currency and remove arbitrage, corruption and opaqueness. "That we did at the same time. That is two engine problem in a very template situation for the government, but we are able to manage that turbulence because we are prepared for inclusivity in governance and rapid communication with the public to really see what is necessary and what you must do.” https://www.vanguardngr.com/2024/04/fuel-subsidy-was-removed-for-nigeria-not-to-go-bankrupt-tinubu/amp/

By Francis Ugwu A Catholic bishop in Michigan, United States of America, has weighed in on the gap between President Biden’s policies and his professed Catholic faith, suggesting “forgiveness” for the president’s “stupidity.” Bishop Robert Gruss of the Saginaw Catholic Diocese mentioned Biden during “Forgiveness as the Heart of Christianity,” a lecture given at the Cathedral of Mary of the Assumption. Fox News reports that Gruss in the discussion called on congregants to let go of unproductive anger and resentment towards others. The cleric cited his own experience growing up with an alcoholic father and a letter he wrote in adulthood forgiving him for the trauma of his youth. While reflecting on his own feelings towards Biden, who has embraced a public affiliation with Catholicism while also supporting abortion, gender ideology, and other policies contrary to Church teaching, the bishop said he pities him. “I don’t have any anger towards the president. I feel sorry for him. I’m not angry at him, he’s just stupid,” Gruss said. The comment provoked renewed laughter from the audience, though the bishop remained serious. “It’s not stupidity in the derogatory way, it’s stupidity in the sense of … he doesn’t understand the Catholic faith.” https://dailypost.ng/2024/04/21/hes-just-stupid-catholic-bishop-knocks-president-biden-on-abortion-gender-theory/

By Lovina Anthony The Uyo Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has secured the conviction and sentencing of the proprietor of an Uyo Cybercrime Training Centre, Ikemesit Edet, popularly known as Hustle Kingdom (HK). A statement released on Saturday by EFCC spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, said Edet was jailed on Wednesday, April 17, 2024 after pleading guilty to two-count charge bordering on impersonation, love scam, hacking/editing of social media accounts and private criminal tutoring, upon his arraignment by the Uyo Zonal Command of the Commission. Count one reads: “That you IKEMESIT EDET IK sometime in January, 2024 in Nigeria within the jurisdiction of this Honorable court, being the occupier and a person concerned with the management of the premises situates and lying at No. 57 D-Line, Ewet Housing Estate, Uyo Akwa Ibom State, did knowingly permit the use of the entire aforesaid premises as a CYBERCRIME ACADEMY, also known as Hustle Kingdom (HK) where you recruited ten (10) young Nigerians between ages 16-25 and taught them cybercrime techniques for perpetrating cyber crimes to wit: hacking, impersonation, and obtaining money by false pretence (Advance Fee Fraud) and thereby committed an offence contrary to section 3 of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act 2006 and punishable under Section 3 of the same Act.” Count two reads: “That you IKEMESIT EDET IK between May 2020 and December 2023 in Nigeria within the jurisdiction of this Honourable court did take possession total sum of Fifteen Million Naira Only (-N=15,000,000.00) which you knew forms proceed of an unlawful act to wit: Cybercrime and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 18(2)\d) of the Money laundering (Prohibition) Act 2022 and punishable under Section 18(3) of the same Act.” Edet pleaded guilty to both counts, prompting prosecution counsel, Joshua Abolarin, to pray the court to convict and sentence him accordingly. Abolarin also prayed the court to order the forfeiture of all exhibits recovered from him at the point of arrest. However, defence counsel Francis Ezike prayed the court to be lenient in sentencing the defendant. After listening to the lawyers, Justice Ojukwu convicted Edet and sentenced him to five years jail term on each count, with an option of fine of N2 million on each count. The court also ordered that all recovered exhibits from the convict be forfeited to the Federal Government of Nigeria. The exhibits include: 13 laptops, a gold- coloured Toyota Corolla, a Lexus Jeep RX 300 and about 3,080.25 square metres of land located at Ibiaku Obio Ndobo village, Uruan Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State. Edet’s journey to jail commenced on January 22, 2024, when investigators from the EFCC’s office in Uyo acted on intelligence and arrested 10 suspects at his Cybercrimes Training Centre at D-Line Ewet Housing Estate, Uyo. All the suspects have been charged to court and convicted. https://dailypost.ng/2024/04/20/yahoo-internet-fraud-training-school-proprietor-jailed-10-years-in-uyo/

By Idowu Isamotu Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, on Monday challenged all the appointees from the North in the current administration to come out openly and defend President Bola Tinubu. Matawalle, a former governor of Zamfara State, specifically called on Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, Special Adviser to the President on political matters in the office of the Vice President, and other leaders to take a position in support of the government. He said this following what he perceived as comments against the federal government by Baba-Ahmed the former spokesperson of the Northern Elders Forum (NEF). In a Facebook post in Hausa, on Sunday, Baba-Ahmed said it would have been better for the Tinubu administration if Matawalle had listed his achievements as minister. Baba-Ahmed had said this after the minister described the NEF as a political paperweight which is a burden to the north. The minister tackled NEF over a recent comment made by the forum that the north regrets voting for the President in the 2023 general election. But in a statement on Monday, Matawalle said any appointee must defend and promote the administration they work for, saying, “Dr. Baba-Ahmed’s relationship and affinity with the Northern Elders’ Forum (NEF) is well-known.” He wondered why appointees from the North kept mute “in the face of intimidation” after the forum attacked the President. He said, “Consequent to my position on the recent attack on the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu by a spokesman of the Northern Elders Forum, it has come to my attention that Dr. Hakeem Baba-Ahmed who once served as the Spokesperson of the group and currently a Special Adviser on Political Matters in the Presidency took to his page on it to express a different position. "According to Dr. Baba-Ahmed ,my stand against the unjust and spurious attack against the new administration of President Tinubu that is working very hard to reposition our country and economy for better as ‘ill-advised’. He suggested I could have done a better job in my defence of the administration where I have the rare honour to serve as a Minister. "Dr. Baba-Ahmed’s relationship and affinity with Northern Elders’ Forum is well-known. The fact now is that he is an appointee of the administration as Special Adviser and it is incumbent on him to work for the success of the government he is part of, protect and defend the government against unjust and vicious attacks from those who hide under ethnic and other primordial interests to heat up the polity for myopic reasons. "It is pertinent to state that every appointee of President Tinubu including Dr. Baba-Ahmed owe the government a copious duty to promote, elucidate and advance the good works and commendable efforts of the government across all sectors. "As appointees of the government from the North, we must all take a stand, be unequivocal and be counted in the roll of honours for our support and work for the success of the administration we are serving. "This is not the time to keep quiet in the face of intimidation and misrepresentation of the efforts and achievements of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. We must stand up to be counted for being on the part of government or take our exit.” https://dailytrust.com/defend-tinubu-or-quit-matawalle-tells-baba-ahmed-other-northern-appointees/

By Donatus Anichukwueze The United States does not want to see an escalation of the crisis in the Middle East, a top White House official said Sunday after Israel repelled a massive missile and drone attack from Iran. "We don’t want to see this escalate,” White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said on NBC’s “Meet the Press”. “We’re not looking for a wider war with Iran.” Israel was on high alert Sunday after Iran’s unprecedented attack sparked fears of a broader conflict. Iran launched its first-ever direct assault on Israeli territory late Saturday in retaliation for a deadly strike by Israeli on Tehran’s consulate in Damascus on April 1. Iran’s retaliation marked a major escalation of the long-running covert war between the regional foes. US President Joe Biden has reaffirmed Washington’s “ironclad” support for Israel, while appearing to guide its staunch ally away from a military response. News outlet Axios said the president had told Netanyahu he would oppose an Israeli counterattack against Iran and that the prime minister should “take the win”. Kirby added in the interview that the United States is “staying vigilant” to any Iranian threats to American troops. "We made it very clear to all parties, including Iran, what we would do … and also how seriously we would take any potential threats to our personnel,” Kirby said. Iran launched more than 300 drones and missiles towards Israel late Saturday, injuring 12 people, the Israeli army said. But almost all were intercepted before they reached Israeli territory, the army said, with help from the United States, Jordan, Britain and other allies.
