By Jim Ochetenwu Operatives of the Adamawa State Police Command have arrested a man who climbed a 33KV high tension electricity pole to demand the resignation of President Bola Tinubu. The incident occurred in Mayo-Belwa Local Government Area of Adamawa State. The man had remained up the pole, insisting Tinubu must resign before he would come down. DAILY POST gathered Monday morning that the incident happened between the morning of Friday September 27 and evening of Saturday, September 28. The state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Suleiman Nguruje, said the man, whose name was not revealed, was rescued on Saturday night and taken into Police custody in the state capital, Yola. "The Command is going to parade the man today (Monday) for attempting suicide,” Nguroje said, adding that attempting suicide is a criminal offence under Nigeria’s constitution. "We are going to charge him to court,” Nguroje asserted. He added that the Police has a duty to protect lives and property and that when any individual attempts to take his life, the individual has to be made to face the law. Further details on the incident have it that the man had on Friday morning, the market day of Mayo Belwa, climbed the 33KV high tension pole along the Yola-Jalingo highway, insisting on Tinubu’s resignation. The state Police Command had to get some locals to persuade him to descend from the pole. They were able to persuade him to come down on Saturday night. https://dailypost.ng/2024/09/30/man-arrested-after-climbing-high-tension-pole-to-demand-tinubus-resignation/

By Andrew Agbese Ordinarily, Tuesday, the 1st of October, 2024 will pass on as a day of merriment, in line with tradition, to celebrate Nigeria’s independence from colonial rule in 1960. But there are signs that aside the expected burst of conviviality, pomp and panoply, this year’s Independence Day, the 64th, may be different. As the government, on one hand, is trying to mark the day with the usual formalities, though on a low key, certain individuals and groups have slated it as a day to begin a sustained match in protest against the current hardship in the country owing to what they describe as ‘bad governance.’ A similar protest held between August 1 and 10, with thousands of people across several states of the country pouring into the streets to protest, among other things, reversal of government policies, prominent among which is the removal of subsidies on petrol, floating of the naira and increase in electricity tariffs despite passionate pleas, intense lobbies and not so subtle cautions from various authorities on citizens to reconsider the action. People used the opportunity of the protests to express their grievances with the policies of the current administration and in many instances the protests became violent with attacks on persons and infrastructure and in the extreme, call for a regime change while waving Russian flags. The violence was more pronounced in the northern part of the country. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who addressed the nation then, said though his government was feeling the pain of citizens, the measures his government had taken were necessary to guarantee better living standards for the people. The organisers, obviously not impressed with the government’s reaction, had since then promised another round of protests. The October 1 planned mass action tagged #FearlessInOctober, and in some instances EndBadGovernanceProtestInNigeria 2.0, is to be the promised sequel. The prelude to the Tuesday protest is, however, nowhere near the last one in which several efforts were made to stop the protests, using clerics and other respected personalities. But the government said it is talking with the organisers of the proposed protest with a view to reaching an understanding with them before October 1. Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, while reacting to enquiries from Weekend Trust, said the security agencies are already engaging some of the organisers. "Government is not against any peaceful protest by Nigerians. After all, it is their fundamental right to stage any protest. “But government is always apprehensive about such protests degenerating into a riot as we experienced in August or the 2020 EndSARS protest in many parts of the country. Security agencies have been discussing with some of the organisers and they are being monitored so that they do not plunge the country into chaos or allow themselves to be used by internal and external forces which want to subvert the country and the 16-month-old administration”, he said. https://dailytrust.com/fearlessinoctober-presidency-moves-to-stop-protest/ |
By Leon Usigbe President Bola Tinubu has extended his heartfelt condolence to Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom state on the passing of his beloved wife, Patience Umo Eno. In a statement issued on Friday by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President (Information & Strategy), the president, on behalf of the federal government, commiserated with the Eno family, the government, and the people of Akwa Ibom state during this grim time. The President affirmed that Patience Eno, as the wife to a visionary governor and an ordained gospel minister, embodied humility, resilience, and loyalty. President Tinubu acknowledged that through her ‘Golden Initiative for All,’ she demonstrated her passion for serving the people and residents of Akwa Ibom state with love, honesty, and dedication, leaving a positive impact that will continue to inspire future generations. He expresses his trust in their resilience and strength during this challenging time, offering reassurance and support. Also, the First Lady of Nigeria, Mrs. Oluremi Tinubu, has extended her deepest condolences to Governor of Eno, the children, family and the people of Akwa Ibom on the passing of the First Lady and Renewed Hope Initiative State Coordinator, Pastor Mrs. Patience Umo-Eno. "My thoughts and prayers are with His Excellency, children, family, and the entire people of Akwa Ibom State at this difficult time. “I pray Almighty God grant you strength, comfort to bear this irreplaceable loss and may her gentle soul rest peacefully in the bossom of our Lord,” Mrs. Tinubu prayed. |
By Seun Opejobi A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Joe Igbokwe, has insisted that those who will rescue Nigeria is not yet born. Igbokwe made the remark in the wake of the high cost of food prices in the country. Posting on Facebook, the APC chieftain lamented that the cost of a bag of rice has increased to N100,000. "With all the rice mills we have in Nigeria, my wife just told me that a bag of rice is now N100k plus. “Without sounding immodest, I am constrained to say that the men and women that will rescue this country from self-inflicted pains and tears are not born yet,” he wrote. By Yusuf Ladan The Kebbi State Government is appealing for support over the flood in the state, saying 329,000 houses have been destroyed by the disaster while 858,000 hectares of farmlands have been washed away. The farmlands, it said, contain crops such as rice, millet, guinea- corn, sorghum, beans, and other varieties. The Kebbi State Commissioner for Information and Culture, Yakubu Birnin Kebbi, gave the statistics, at a briefing in Birnin Kebbi on Friday. Birnin Kebbi made it clear that the enormity of the flooding, the consequent havoc caused, and the level of mitigation required, have overwhelmed the state government despite what it has put on the ground to provide succour to the victims. "Governor Nasir’s administration has done its best to cater to those affected by the flooding, wholesome compilation of reports on the level of the disaster in each community in all the local government areas have been made and would be presented to the Federal Agencies concerned, this Friday,” he said. “We are soliciting help, the situation is dire, and the government needs assistance to effectively resettle those affected. “Many of them have lost their means of livelihood, the disaster has forced farmers into penury, shortage of food looms on the horizon, and our food security target is in jeopardy unless urgent measures are put in place to remedy the situation. "The Kebbi Government will provide improved seeds and other agricultural input to farmers to return to cultivation, but more is needed” "Preliminary statistics show that seven persons died in Ngaski, eight in Maiyama, five in Kalgo, seven in Jega, and two in Birnin Kebbi, as a result of the flooding.” Asked whether the Kebbi State Government has accessed the N3 billion grant for flood mitigation from the Federal Government, the commissioner said that he was not aware if the money has entered the coffers of the state. “I am also surprised that members from Kebbi State in the National Assembly including Senators, are yet to visit the areas ravaged by flooding to offer the necessary assistance and sympathy”, the Commissioner remarked. He warned that the government would use force to evacuate adamant communities in flood-prone areas to safer places. https://www.channelstv.com/2024/09/27/flood-kills-29-destroys-321000-houses-858000-hectares-of-farmlands-in-kebbi/

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested former Taraba State Governor, Darius Ishaku, over allegations of N27 billion fraud. Top sources within the commission confirmed that the former governor was arrested on Friday and was still in the anti-graft agency’s detention as of Friday evening. One of the sources revealed that at least 15-count charges had been filed against Ishaku and he would be arraigned in court soon as evidence against him had been compiled. Ishaku is a member of the Peoples Democratic Party and served as the governor of Taraba State from May 2015 to May 2023. In May 2021, the anti-graft agency also arrested three officials who served under his government for allegedly involved in a N21 billion scam. It was learnt that the state officials were a permanent secretary, a Director of Finance and Account and a cashier in the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs. It was gathered further that alleged stolen public funds under the Ishaku government were withdrawn from the state’s accounts through cheques in tranches of at least N10 million each. https://saharareporters.com/2024/09/27/breaking-anti-graft-agency-efcc-arrests-taraba-ex-governor-darius-ishaku-over-alleged

Seventeen Islamic State’s West Africa Province (ISWAP) militants drowned while attempting to flee across a river between Kafetoa and Bulabulin Gaidam, located on the border between Nigeria and Niger Republic. A counter-insurgency expert in the Lake Chad area, Zagazola Makama, in an X post said the insurgents were reportedly trying to reach Tam village in Niger Republic, near Kannamma in Yobe State, when strong currents swept them away. "The militants were swept away by strong currents as they attempted the crossing,” he added. The terrorists had been displaced from their bases in Bulabulin Geidam, Chettimari, and Diffan, along the Nigeria-Niger Republic borders. “At least 17 militants belonging to the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) drowned while attempting to cross a river between the villages of Kafetoa and Bulabulin Gaidam, which lie along the border between Nigeria and Niger Republic,” he said. https://saharareporters.com/2024/09/22/17-iswap-terrorists-reportedly-drown-while-trying-cross-river-nigeria-niger-republic

By Imoleayo Oyedeyi and Olufemi Adediran The viral video of a suspected member of The Lord’s Chosen Charismatic Revival Ministry in Lagos has sparked outrage after the woman celebrated receiving divine assistance during a Federal Government examination and how she shared her answers with another candidate. During the testimony, the unnamed member claimed an old man appeared to her in the examination hall and gave her answers to some questions. The woman said the exercise was one of the promotional examinations of the military (Army, Navy, and Air Force) and that there were about 50 questions, of which 40 bordered on career and 10 related to current affairs. “We all had written our career questions. It then came to these very 10 questions, which asked, ‘Mention 10 Francophone countries and their capitals.’ "Brethren, nobody knew this question. So, all I did was to raise the question paper and declare to it: ‘I am a Chosen! I am a chosen!! I am a chosen!!! This question, who are you? Where is the God of my pastor power?’ “Then, suddenly, an old man appeared by my right-hand side in white apparel. He told me, ‘My daughter, begin to write.’ And I began to write,” she recounted. She claimed that some of the invigilators, who suspected something was amiss, pulled off her apron, which made “the angel” disappear. The action, she added, made her angry. “But when they returned the apron and I wore it back, the old man appeared again and began to tell the rest of the answers. I completed 10 good questions. I wrote them correctly and accurately. To me, it was like a dream. “Brethren, when I finished writing my questions, a sister who sat by my side was a Mountain of Fire member because of the logo on her clothing. As I took up the answer sheet and was cross-checking my write-up, I signaled to the woman, saying, ‘Sister, do anything you can do humanly possible. "Any moment from now, I am going to submit my questions.’ While I was cross-checking, the sister quietly copied. And immediately she finished, brethren, I stood up and submitted my questions. Everybody in the hall was looking at me. That was how only two of us out of 102 were able to do this,” she added. The church then erupted in celebration as she ended her testimony. The Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria, Lagos chapter, Bishop Stephen Adegbite, expressed shock that the church allowed the testimony, which he described as a fabrication. He said God would not work supernatural miracles that way, adding that there were no shortcuts to academic success other than hard work and belief in God. "He noted that the Christian body would be meeting next Friday to address the controversies raised by the woman’s testimony and several other “unacceptable comments made by Pentecostal pastors on social media.” “She is entitled to her opinion as she is the owner of her mouth. But for anyone to say such, we must verify that. We must see the people in the hall, and they must testify against her that that was never the situation. "But looking at it ordinarily, that is a foolish talk, and nobody should accept that. There are testimonies you don’t allow to be given in the church. And that is why before people give their testimonies, you should invite them and know what they want to talk about. "If it is something that is good for public consumption, you should allow it to go. But if you know that the story they are telling can only be told to monkeys, you should ask the person to go and face the monkeys and say that, not in the church. So, that type of testimony should be served to the monkeys and not to human beings,” the Lagos State CAN chairman declared. When asked his thought on such miracles, he said, “God doesn’t act that way. I have a Ph.D. Which God of Chosen will appear to you and give you answers to your examination questions? "The God of Chosen will give you strength to read your books and go for the exams. There is no shortcut to success in life other than hard work and belief in God.” There have been other trending videos of members of the church sharing testimonies that social media users considered wild. "In one, a member of the church narrated how a lion miraculously saved him from kidnappers. In another video, another testifier recounted how bullets did not penetrate his head. The CAN chairman insisted that the testimonies were all fallacies. “Anybody that wants to prove such a thing should bring a gun to the church. Let the person stand and let us release the bullets. We will see whether the bullets will enter or not. They are all blatant lies from the pit of hell,” he declared. "We will be meeting probably next Friday. It is going to be a CAN general meeting in Lagos, and we are going to address it. We will speak about the madness going on among Pentecostal pastors,” he added. Reacting in an interview with Saturday PUNCH, the Head of Public Relations and Media for the church, Pastor Chidi Louis, said the testimony videos were doctored to tarnish the image of the church because some of the incidents happened in the testifiers’ dreams. He said the church allowed members to share their testimonies the way they wanted without gagging them because it believed that such narrations should not be censored. “There is no need for us to begin to doubt someone’s testimony. If anybody comes and says he wants to give a testimony, we give that person the opportunity; we don’t guide people on what to say or how to say it. They are free to say it as they like,” Louis stated, adding that the church was unperturbed by social media trolls. https://punchng.com/i-am-a-chosen-can-fumes-over-exam-malpractice-testimony/

In a sharp critique of President Bola Tinubu’s leadership, Phrank Shaibu, Special Assistant on Public Communication to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has likened the fate of Tinubu’s once-celebrated political symbol, the broken shackle, to the swastika’s historical transformation from a symbol of good fortune to one of oppression. In a piece entitled, “De-cap-itated!”, Shaibu drew parallels between the swastika, which was used by Adolf Hitler’s Nazi regime, and the broken shackles symbol that Tinubu and his supporters adopted during the 2023 presidential campaign. He explained that historically, the swastika symbolised nationalism and good fortune, representing hope across various cultures, adding that its association with the Nazi regime turned it into a global emblem of fascism and hate. Similarly, Shaibu argued that the broken shackle, initially seen as a representation of freedom and human rights, has now morphed into a symbol of oppression under Tinubu’s leadership. “President Tinubu, in a campaign soapbox in Ogun State where he made the infamous Emilokan remarks, which is a selfish and arrogant ownership claim to power, has since made the broken shackle a symbol of oppression and political rascality,” Shaibu stated. “The Emilokan mantra, which translates to “it is my turn” in Yoruba, was once celebrated as a rallying cry for Tinubu’s supporters. “It was worn proudly on caps adorned with the broken shackle symbol, known as Emilokan caps. “During the campaign, these caps symbolised Tinubu’s promise to protect human rights, boost the economy, and replicate Lagos’s success across Nigeria. "HomeFeatured Emilokan Caps: Tinubu’s Symbols Of Hope Now Relics Of Disappointment – Atiku’s Aide FEATUREDLATEST NEWSPOLITICS By Agency Report On Sep 16, 2024 0 18 ShareFacebookTwitter ABUJA – In a sharp critique of President Bola Tinubu’s leadership, Phrank Shaibu, Special Assistant on Public Communication to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has likened the fate of Tinubu’s once-celebrated political symbol, the broken shackle, to the swastika’s historical transformation from a symbol of good fortune to one of oppression. “His supporters believed in his democratic credentials and ability to transform the nation into a prosperous economy. However, as Shaibu suggests, the reality has been far from the initial promise. “Everyone now knows that Emilokan is not about shared prosperity for all but about a rabid appropriation of state assets to personal ownership,” Shaibu remarked. He further accused Tinubu of building personal wealth by exploiting Lagosians, debunking the widely held belief that Tinubu’s governance was responsible for Lagos’ economic growth. “Tinubu didn’t build Lagos. Rather, Tinubu built his wealth through the sweat of Lagosians,” he added. Shaibu said the disillusionment with the Emilokan symbol has become so widespread that the caps, once proudly displayed by vendors and supporters, are now gathering dust. He said: “The once-eager vendors who proudly displayed the Emilokan caps at bustling traffic lights and strategic street corners now find themselves burdened by them. “Once a sought-after item, the caps have become an embarrassing relic for many of Tinubu’s supporters, representing broken promises and a political regime that has shifted towards authoritarianism. In his analysis, Shaibu also compared Tinubu to the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo, an iconic figure in Nigerian politics known for his progressive ideals. According to Shaibu, Tinubu’s supporters initially likened him to Awolowo, believing he would follow in the legendary leader’s footsteps by delivering a prosperous and inclusive government. However, Shaibu dismisses this comparison as a “political impersonation fraud of grand proportions.” “Everyone now knows that Tinubu is not Awolowo,” Shaibu asserted, arguing that the notion of Tinubu as a progressive leader has crumbled in the face of his administration’s actions, which appear more focused on personal gain than on the collective good. “The disappointment with Tinubu’s administration extends beyond the political sphere.” Shaibu claims that the Emilokan caps, once a potent political symbol, have now become a source of embarrassment for many Nigerians. Just as the swastika was banned from public display after the defeat of Nazi Germany, Shaibu believes that the Emilokan caps have become relics of “political deception and disappointment.” For Shaibu, the transformation of the Emilokan symbol is emblematic of Tinubu’s broader failure to deliver on his promises. What once represented hope, freedom, and prosperity has become a reminder of missed opportunities and growing disenchantment. Shaibu concludes his critique by noting that the political reality of Tinubu’s presidency has fallen far short of the expectations set during the campaign. “As Nigeria grapples with the unfolding reality of the Tinubu administration, the fate of the Emilokan symbol poignantly reflects the country’s current political climate,” he said. https://independent.ng/emilokan-caps-tinubus-symbols-of-hope-now-relics-of-disappointment-atikus-aide/

By Usman Bello Acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Illiya Damagum, has said members of the party will use their blood to defend their votes in the September 21 governorship election in Edo State. This is even as he warned the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) against midnight announcement of the election results. Damagum said this during the grand finale of the PDP campaign in Edo. He also presented the party’s flag to the governorship candidate, Dr Asue Ighodalo. “To INEC, I we don’t want that midnight results announcement. We will be vigilant and make sure that it doesn’t happen.” "And, we know they will rig the election, this is not a threat, but we are very serious and we will defend our votes with our blood and everything. “To the citizens of this country, please watch the election of Edo, it will be a test for our democracy. If they miss it here, it means they are looking for anarchy. We know they will attempt to do so, but we will resist them.” He, however, called on the party and its supporters to go out en masse to vote for the PDP and also defend their votes. On his part, the Chairman, PDP National Campaign Council, and Governor of Adamawa State, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, warned against compromising the electoral process. "We cannot be intimidated. We will tell them we know how to win election. No body will rig us out. Edo is the cradle of civilization and intellectual in Nigeria, you must not settle for anything less. So, vote for Ighodalo,” he said. On his part, Ighodalo said Obaseki has laid the foundation for the development of the state and would continue from where he stopped. Also, the 2023 presidential candidate of the party, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, noted that in the coming election, Edo will still not be Lagos just like in 2016. “So come out to vote, protect and defend your votes, escort your votes and make sure they are announced and if you do that, no body can change your votes and PDP will win come September 21.” Dignitaries at the event include PDP governors, Senator Aba Moro, Chief Tom Ikimi, members of BOT, members of the State House of Assembly, House Representatives, among others. https://dailytrust.com/edo-guber-weii-protect-votes-with-our-blood-pdp-chairman/

Nigeria has been ranked third in the list of countries with the most generous people in Africa according to the World Giving Index 2024. In the list, Kenya ranks number one in Africa and second globally while The Gambia and Liberia rank second and fourth. According to the World Giving Index, by the Charity Aid Foundation (CAF), “Kenya’s position in the World Giving Index is both impressive and encouraging considering the nation’s battle with a rising cost of living and growing unemployment. “As a nation with a young population, the high ranking on volunteering and the willingness to help a stranger is a positive indicator of the “utu” spirit which signifies humanity. By Christy Anyanwu, Olakunle Olafioye, Praise Odhegba and Damilare Omotosho The significant increase in the pump price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) otherwise known as petrol, which saw the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL), raising it from about N568 to N855 per litre may have made nonsense of the ultimatum given to market associations and traders across the country to crash the prices of foodstuff by 50 per cent within one month. With the latest fuel price increment, the cost of transporting foodstuffs from the nation’s farming hinterlands across the country to the urban centres in state capitals and other major towns has equally gone up. Also, the continuous loss of value of the Naira against the United States dollar and other international trade currencies, according to market leaders in Lagos State, have contributed to the increase in foodstuff prices. They equally believe that the combination of armed herdsmen’s kidnapping activities and destruction of cultivated crops by herds of cattle in farming communities had also led to reduction in the tonnage of farm produce, thereby making farmers sell at higher prices to bulk buyers, who constitute the primary link between the farmers and major distributors in markets across the country. In summary, they identified the reasons prices of staple foods have remained high as rising naira-dollar rate, high cost of transportation and endless extortions of transporters by security operatives on the highways. Lambasting the government for playing politics with the issue of rice cultivation in the country, a rice dealer, Mrs Augusta Mba told Sunday Sun: “More than 90 per cent of the rice the people eat in Lagos is foreign rice because we rarely get to see the local rice the government often claims it is investing on. And since the one available is imported and paid for in foreign currency and not in naira, there is no way anyone should expect its price to fall while the foreign exchange rate remains high. “It is only from the new media that we hear about local rice from news media, but never see the rice in commercial quantity in real life. So, the price of rice will be high for some time until the naira regains value against the US dollar. “The government should stop the politics over local rice production in Nigeria, which started during the tenure of former President Muhammadu Buhari, when we were deceived with the fake local rice pyramid in Abuja.” Besides high foreign exchange rate, rice dealers also complained about high cost of transportation occasioned by the astronomical increase in fuel price, a fallout of the removal of subsidy on fuel by the current administration and endless extortions by security agents along major roads. “Before the government announced the withdrawal of subsidy on fuel, the average cost of transporting a bag of rice was between N500 and N1,000 depending on the distance, but now we spend N2,000 up to N3,500 per bag on transportation. "Again, all forms of uniformed government agents also demand to be settled before you would be allowed to go with your goods even when the goods have reached the town. This will definitely be transferred to the consumers in form of higher prices,” she said. Expressing similar feelings about the ultimatum issued by the Federal Competitions and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) to traders to crash the prices of foodstuff within 30 days, a leading sub-distributor of imported food products at the newly reconstructed Irepodun Market, Ikotun, which is managed by a private developer under a concession agreement with the Igando-Ikotun Local Council Development Area, who owns three shops combined into one, Alhaja Fausat Morenike Adeleke, fumed when Sunday Sun sought her views. She said: “Sometimes I wonder about these people in government. Abi their head correct so? So, they expect that a trader who buys goods at high price will sell at a lower price? Where will this happen? Anyway, they talked that one for talking sake. Let them come inside the market to tell us so. Nonsense!” In the open space close to the bulk foodstuff section of the market, on Wednesday morning, several muscular young men from the northern parts were scurrying about to unload cargoes of rice, beans, yams, ginger and tomatoes from five trailer-trucks that arrived the market in the night. From her shop, Mrs Funmilayo Martins, who sells imported and locally produced vegetable oil and other food condiments, observed the frenetic pace at which the young men went about their work. Catching sight this reporter, who approached her shop, she shifted her gaze and paid attention. But her countenance changed when asked about the FCCPC ultimatum. With anger written all over her face, she spat out: “Let the Federal Government open their own bulk market like Lagos government has done and sell to ordinary people at lower prices. That is what they should do with the billions they have been claiming to be giving to poor people. They should just leave us alone. “We are struggling to survive and then government increases the price of petrol again. Do they want our blood too?” Another of the worst affected basic food items in terms of astronomical price hike is beans. Findings by Sunday Sun revealed that the price of beans increased by over 800 per cent within the space of one year and dealers are not expecting any miraculous crash in the price of this staple food any time soon. A trader, Haruna, at the popular Ile-Epo Market in Oke-Odo LCDA of Alimosho, blamed a number of factors for the exorbitant hike in the price of beans. He noted that beans, being one of the last food crops to be harvested in the country, is often the worst hit by the activity of herders who often invade farmlands especially during dry season to graze their herds. Haruna also identified high cost of agricultural inputs, which he said, has forced many beans producers to increase the market price of the commodity. But beyond these two reasons, the majority of beans farmers are more interested in exporting their produce than selling it in the country. “Since naira was devalued, a good number of beans farmers now prefer to export their produce than sell it in the country. So this has made beans very scarce and costly now,” he revealed. Meanwhile, the prices of some food items have considerably crashed in the last few weeks. These items include pepper, tomatoes, cassava flakes and yam, which traders predicted could crash further as their harvest peaks. The Oyingbo Market is a bustling foodstuff distribution hub for rice and other grains, stockfish, dried fished, Ogbono, Egusi, snails, among other staples which are sold in bulk. The daughter of the Iya Oloja (female leader of the market), who requested not be identified, contended that it was unfair for the FCCPC to blame traders for the high price of foodstuff, arguing that they could not be reasonably expected to sell their goods at below purchase price. She said that the traders sell according to the prices given to them by bulk suppliers. “The suppliers keep complaining about the high cost of transporting goods to our market. That is a huge problem. We do not want to drive away customers. We want to sell our goods, but we cannot sell at below our cost price. https://thesun.ng/foodstuffs-price-crash-ultimatum-were-not-father-christmas-traders-reply-fg/
