By Ogaga Ariemu Nigerian filling stations reduced their Premium Motor Spirit price on Saturday, barely 24 hours after the hike. Checks by DAILY POST showed that Ranoil, Empire Energy, and other filling stations in Abuja adjusted their petrol pumps to N1,365 and N1,375 per litre respectively, down from N1,440 per litre on Friday. This means that petroleum marketers dropped their fuel price by N65 and N75 per litre. DAILY POST reports that the move was to attract patronage from customers. Recall that three days ago, Nigerian filling stations had raised their petrol pump price to between N1,365 and N1,440 nationwide after Dangote Refinery and depot owners increased ex-depot prices to around N1,275 and N1,290 per litre. DAILY POST reports that while the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited and MRS Bovas filling stations raised their petrol price to around N1,365 per litre, others adjusted theirs above N1,440 per litre. However, with the latest fuel price reduction by Ranoil and Empire Energy, the majority of filling station outlets now dispense petrol between N1,365 and N1,375 per litre. This development comes as the ripple effect of crude oil prices continues to impact Nigeria’s domestic fuel price. Brent and West Texas Intermediate crude rose to $114 and $105 per barrel before dropping to $108 and $101 after the filing of this report. https://dailypost.ng/2026/05/02/nigerian-filling-stations-reduce-fuel-price-after-hike/

By Andrew Agbese, Baba Martins, Musa Luka Musa & Philip Clement The official campaign slogan for the Bola Tinubu/ Kashim Shettima campaign, in the build up to the 2023 presidential elections, was ‘Renewed Hope.' Apart from the emilokan statement by the then presidential aspirant to assert that it was his turn to be president of Nigeria, the Renewed Hope became the most popular catch-phrase then. After Tinubu won the election and assumed office as president on May 29, 2023, the slogan, rather than wane, assumed a life of its own as the wife of the president, Senator Remi Tinubu, labelled her pet project using the theme of the campaign slogan. As Nigerians were beginning to understand where and when to draw the line between the campaign slogan and the First Lady’s pet project, various initiatives and programmes of the federal government also borrowed from the nomenclature with various projects labelled as Renewed Hope with various sub themes. Checks by our correspondents revealed that the projects so labelled include those under various government agencies which enjoy funding and are backed by the government. The obfuscations have led to insinuations that the retention of the slogan could be deliberate to associate projects done by the government as being in line with earlier campaign promises. Analysts have raised concerns over how the line between the government funded projects and personal interventions have become blurry. An analyst, who preferred not to be named, said it is important the government makes it clear which ones are being sponsored through the interventions by First Lady and others with the ones that are normal projects covered by the federal government’s budget. A renowned political scientist, Prof Jibrin Ibrahim, recalled that originally, the Renewed Hope agenda was part of the campaign programme of Tinubu and it was part of what was used in developing the manifesto for his election. "What happened subsequently was that when they formed government and the First Lady started this project, it was more like a personal project of the First Lady. And what disturbed me was that there was no information on where the money for the project was coming from. Is it government money or is it her personal money? Then as you’ve observed in recent years, it’s become somehow merged with government projects. "You have projects all over the country that are based on this Renewed Hope. And the problem with what’s going on is that we still don’t have any information on who is funding it. Because the important thing is that you have to separate private projects from public projects,” he stated. A source familiar with the federal government’s ‘Renewed Hope’ projects said the name is being used because it forms the administration’s flagship project, noting its role in the current political landscape. "Honestly, this is the administration’s flagship project, and I see nothing wrong with it being used for a campaign. It is the norm for those in power to showcase their achievements through such projects,” the source said. He said the project was named Renewed Hope because it is the administration’s campaign initiative to reflect all the developmental project of the present administration. There are also concerns that fully funded government projects are being used to campaign for President Tinubu who is expected to run for a second term. Investigations by our correspondent have shown that apart from First Lady’s Renewed Hope Initiative, so far, there are the Renewed Hope Agenda; Renewed Hope Ward Development Programme; the Renewed Hope Ambassadors and Renewed Hope Infrastructure Development Fund. There’s also the Presidential Infrastructure Development Fund (PIDF) which the president said should be absorbed into the new Renewed Hope Infrastructure Development Fund (RHIDF) and the 2026 -2030 Renewed Hope National Development Plan. The new Renewed Hope Ambassadors is led by Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State, while the Minister of Budget and National Economic Planning, Abubakar Atiku Bagudu, handles the Renewed Hope Ward Development Programme which he described as a core part of the Tinubu administration’s drive to build a $1 trillion economy and ensure no Nigerian is left behind by 2030. He said the Renewed Hope Ward Development initiative involves economic mapping of all 8,809 political wards across the country to identify unique local opportunities for job creation, investment, and community development. Weekend Trust was informed that the Renewed Hope Projects are a Nigerian federal government housing initiative under the Renewed Hope Agenda, aiming to build 50,000 affordable housing units nationwide through Public-Private Partnerships. It is planning to build various house types with amenities like schools, clinics, and markets, with projects already underway in states like Abuja, Kano, Oyo, Katsina, Ebonyi, and Lagos and lower/medium-income housing in Abuja, Lagos, Katsina, Yobe; Gombe; Sokoto; Benue and Kano as well as, Abia, Akwa Ibom, Delta, Osun, Oyo, Benue, and Nasarawa. The projects, our correspondent learnt, are funded by the Federal Ministry of Housing, Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria, FMBN, and the private sector. How far the Renewed Hope Initiative has gone The Renewed Hope Initiative of the First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, commenced in 2023, and has according to available information cumulatively mobilised and disbursed over N100bn in the past three years. The figure, which includes direct disbursements, donations and multi-year pledges, rose from N9.4 billion to N12.9 billion reported in mid-2025. The donations include pledged interventions and direct cash payouts targeting women, displaced persons, orphans of fallen military heroes, senior citizens and Nigerians in diaspora communities. Launched shortly after the inauguration of President Bola Tinubu in June 2023, the initiative began with targeted welfare interventions, including N250, 000 grants to 57 flood-affected families in Abuja’s TradeMore Estate, amounting to N14.25m. In July 2023, it donated N500m to victims of insecurity in Maiduguri and N427.75m to widows and orphans of fallen servicemen, with each of the 1,709 beneficiaries receiving N250,000. In November 2023, the First Lady launched the “Every Home a Garden” contest, offering a N20m prize to first-time female farmers nationwide to bolster domestic food production. On August 26, 2023, Mrs Tinubu announced 43 scholarships among others. The Renewed Hope Cities and Estates Programme The Renewed Hope Cities and Estates Programme is a flagship initiative of the federal government of Nigeria under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, designed to address the nation’s 17-20 million unit housing deficit. The initiative aims to deliver 100,000 housing units nationwide, with 50,000 units targeted in the first phase. The Renewed Hope Cities is centered on communities with at least 1,000 units each in major urban centres, featuring 1-3 bedroom flats, terraces, and duplexes. This is in addition with Renewed Hope Estates which is a m-sized project of 250-500 units in state capitals for middle-income earners. The third one is the social housing targeted at the most vulnerable, featuring 100 affordable homes in each of Nigeria’s 774 Local Government Areas. Speaking at the ground breaking of the Renewed Hope Cities and Estates programme in February 2024, the then Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Musa Dangiwa, said the funding for these projects will come from a mix of sponsors comprising the Federal Ministry of Housing and Urban Development’s budgetary allocation, the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria (FMBN), and Public Private Partnerships with reputable developers. The project is the pilot under a Public Private Partnership between the Federal Ministry of Housing and Urban Development and a consortium of developers comprising Continental Civil and General Construction and Ceezali Limited signed in December 2023 to deliver a total of 100,000 houses nationwide. https://dailytrust.com/renewed-hope-slogan-policy-or-campaign/?utm_source=beloud.com

By : Amarachi Okonkwo Former Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has raised alarm over what he described as massive revenue leakages in Nigeria, citing recent World Bank findings that a significant portion of the country’s earnings failed to reach the Federation Account. In a statement posted on his official X handle on Saturday, Obi expressed concern that although Nigeria’s Federation revenue rose to ₦84 trillion within three years, about 41 per cent, amounting to ₦34.44 trillion was not remitted to the Federation Account. He noted that the missing sum exceeds the combined ₦34 trillion allocated for capital expenditure in the 2024 and 2025 Appropriation Acts, describing the comparison as a stark indication of deep-rooted systemic issues. “This is not a mere oversight; it points to institutionalised corruption on a massive scale,” Obi said. The former Anambra State governor drew parallels with past financial controversies, recalling the 1994 report of the Okigbo Panel, which uncovered $12.4 billion in unaccounted Gulf War oil windfall. He said the revelation at the time sparked nationwide outrage, contrasting it with what he described as the current muted response to a more severe situation. Obi further lamented that Nigeria is caught in what he termed a “lethal paradox” of increasing revenue with declining investment in critical sectors such as healthcare, education and infrastructure. According to him, since 2025, systemic deductions by government agencies have enabled them to retain more funds than are allocated to some states and key ministries, thereby weakening national development efforts. “These leakages explain why countries with fewer resources are outperforming Nigeria across key development indices,” he stated, questioning how the country could address challenges in power supply, education, healthcare and infrastructure under such conditions. Obi stressed that Nigeria “has no business being poor” given its resource base, urging for disciplined and transparent leadership to plug revenue leakages and ensure funds are redirected toward national development. “It is time to redirect our hijacked resources back to the people and move Nigeria into the league of developed nations,” he added. He concluded by calling for collective action to reform the system, expressing optimism that meaningful change is possible. “With our collective resolve to change this corruption-infested system, a new Nigeria is possible,” Obi said. https://guardian.ng/news/obi-describes-missing-n34-3-tn-as-institutionalised-corruption/

Residents of Agwabi community in Buruku Local Government Area of Benue State were left in disbelief after a mortuary attendant, identified as Amaobi, was apprehended for allegedly using the leg of a deceased person as a walking stick. According to reports, the disturbing incident occurred on Friday morning when Amaobi, who is in charge of a local mortuary, reportedly took the severed limb to a nearby shop while attempting to purchase items. His actions quickly attracted attention, sparking outrage among community members. Eyewitnesses say the situation escalated as youths in the area confronted and detained him before handing him over to operatives of the Benue State Police Command. In his confession, Amaobi claimed that the act was not driven by malice but was a desperate attempt to draw public and government attention to the condition of the mortuary. He alleged that over 18 bodies, believed to be victims of criminal incidents handled by security operatives last year, remain unclaimed and unattended in the facility. The incident has since generated widespread reactions, with many calling for a thorough investigation and improved oversight of mortuary practices in the state. Authorities have yet to release an official statement as of the time of filing this report. https://www..com/talk/topic,643960.0.html

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has launched a sharp attack on former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, describing him as a habitual presidential contender who repeatedly falls short at the polls. Wike’s remarks came on Thursday during an inspection of ongoing infrastructure projects across Abuja, where he dismissed Atiku’s criticism of the current administration as unfounded and out of touch with realities on ground. He argued that visible development within the FCT contradicts claims that nothing meaningful has been achieved. Taking a swipe at the former vice president, the minister said Nigerians would not take such comments seriously, insisting that Atiku’s long history of contesting elections without success undermines his credibility. Wike also challenged Atiku to draw comparisons between the condition of Abuja during his time in office and the present state of the capital city, maintaining that the difference is evident in the scale of ongoing and completed projects. He stressed that governance must not be derailed by political rhetoric, noting that contractors handling key projects are focused on delivery timelines rather than election cycles. According to him, development efforts will continue uninterrupted despite political distractions. Providing updates on major infrastructure works, the minister disclosed that the Airport–Kuje road project is nearing completion, with part of the bridge expected to open for use within days. He assured residents that the entire project would be completed and handed over before the end of May. Similarly, Wike said the first phase of the Kuje–Gwagwalada road dualisation, covering about seven kilometres, is also on track for completion within the same timeframe, expressing satisfaction with both the pace and quality of work. He noted that the road projects are strategically designed to improve connectivity between satellite towns and the city centre, reduce congestion, and stimulate economic growth. In particular, he projected that Kuje would soon evolve into a major residential and commercial hub. Addressing allegations by the African Democratic Congress that the FCT Administration attempted to frustrate its convention, Wike denied any involvement, stating that no such interference occurred and challenging the party to provide evidence. The minister further revealed that a significant portion of ongoing infrastructure projects, estimated at over 80 percent, would be completed before January, reaffirming the administration’s commitment to delivering impactful development across the territory. https://thisnigeria.com/atiku-is-a-habitual-failure-at-polls-says-wike/

As a Christian, insulting the prophet of Islam is one of the biggest sins you can commit. Avoid it, we are Nigerians. According to the naturalists point of view about social structure, we are naturally created to be in a society where three major religions are practiced -- Christianity, Islam and ATR. Why will you condemn others choice of faith? The holy bible is against insulting/cursing any body not talk of the Prophet. You didn't believe he's a prophet? fine! but why insulting him? for what gains?? James chapter 3 condemned all this inability to control your tongue. If at all we need peace and stability, then respecting other people's choice of faith should be our first priority. God bless Nigeria! |
The U.S. and Iran reached a ceasefire deal on Tuesday, less than two hours before the deadline President Trump imposed for Iran to meet his demands or else face wide-scale destruction. As part of the agreement, set to take effect immediately, Trump said the U.S. and Israel would suspend bombing Iran for two weeks, subject to Iran following through on its commitment to reopen the Strait of Hormuz for safe passage during the ceasefire period. The negotiations — facilitated by Pakistan — mark a breathtaking comedown from Trump's pledge made early Tuesday that a "whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again" if a deal could not be reached by 8 p.m. ET to open the strait. In announcing the deal, Trump wrote on his social media platform: "This will be a double sided CEASEFIRE! The reason for doing so is that we have already met and exceeded all Military objectives, and are very far along with a definitive Agreement concerning Longterm PEACE with Iran, and PEACE in the Middle East." The president added that Iran has proposed a "workable" 10-point peace plan that includes what he described as "points of past contention," which "have been agreed to between the United States and Iran." The extra time, he said, will allow the agreement to be finalized. Iranian leaders are also touting the ceasefire as a victory, noting that the "criminal U.S." has agreed to "the general framework" of Iran's 10-point proposal. "Good news to the dear nation of Iran! Nearly all the objectives of the war have been achieved," the Supreme National Security Council said in a statement. According to Iranian officials, the proposal — delivered to the United States via Pakistan — requires the lifting of all sanctions and UN resolutions against Iran, alongside the release of Iranian assets held overseas. Other demands include the withdrawal of U.S. combat forces from military bases across the region, compensation in the form of estimated reparations, and Iran's right to nuclear enrichment. Iran officials warned that any deviation from the agreement could lead to future violence. "Our hands are on the trigger, and the moment the enemy makes the slightest mistake, it will be met with full force," the Supreme National Security Council said. Iran's foreign minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi thanked Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif for his role in the negotiations. "If attacks against Iran are halted our Powerful Armed Forces will cease their defensive operations," Araghchi said in a statement. He added: "For a period of two weeks, safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz will be possible via coordination with Iran's Armed Forces and with due consideration of technical limitations." But just hours after the pause in violence was announced there appeared to be disagreement over who would be granted a reprieve from the strikes. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office said in a statement Wednesday morning that it supports Trump's decision to suspend strikes against Iran for two weeks, but that the ceasefire doesn't include Lebanon, despite Pakistan's prime minister saying otherwise. It's unclear where negotiations stand regarding Iran's position that it can continue its enrichment of uranium. In his statement, Netanyahu said Israel "supports U.S. efforts to ensure Iran no longer poses a nuclear or missile threat. Pakistan's prime minister Sharif, who has been acting as an intermediary between Tehran and Washington, said the ceasefire will take effect immediately, and includes "Lebanon and elsewhere." The prime minister will remain at the forefront of negotiations in the coming week. He has invited delegations from the U.S. and Iran to "settle all disputes" in continued diplomatic talks in Islamabad on Friday, April 10. "Both parties have displayed remarkable wisdom and understanding and have remained constructively engaged in furthering the cause of peace and stability," Sharif wrote in a post on X, and expressed optimism that the Islamabad talks would result in sustainable peace. Prior to the ceasefire agreement, Trump had threatened to destroy bridges, power plants and water treatment facilities; moves that would imperil the entire population of Iran. Wide-scale destruction of infrastructure, without any distinction between civilian and military targets, would be considered a war crime under international and U.S. law, legal experts tell NPR. https://www.npr.org/2026/04/07/nx-s1-5776377/iran-war-updates

By Emmanuel Egobiambu With Nigerians experiencing recurring power outages in recent weeks, the coming days are going to be better. This is according to President Bola Tinubu, who spoke at the National Convention of the All Progressives Congress (APC), in Abuja on Friday. The country has battled power outages in recent weeks, owing to lower generation. But President Tinubu says a turnaround is underway. “I assure you, many of you lamenting the problem of electricity and power; we are paying attention to that,” he said. “Electricity will become better, and we assure you there will be opportunities and progress in our industrialisation. "Through the Grid Asset Management Company, we will inject approximately 1,500 megawatts into a new grid corridor,” the president said. “The impact of our programmes is visible, tangible, impactful, and measurable—not mere rhetoric as some opposition elements like to suggest. We are moving from survival mode to stability.” Tinubu took over as president in 2023 and has since initiated several reforms, such as unifying the exchange rate window and removing fuel subsidies. These moves have been criticised by the opposition, which says they have caused untold hardship to Nigerians. Tinubu, though, admitted that “the road to reform would be tough” and assured Nigerians that the country is getting it right. “Fellow compatriots, since assuming office, our government has remained focused on delivering on our mandate to the Nigerian people despite a complex global economic and political environment. Today, I can assure you that we are on the right track. Investor confidence has greatly improved. “Our oil and gas sector has once more become attractive to foreign investment following our reforms. Our Eurobond issuance was oversubscribed by 400%, and Nigeria has exited the financial ‘grey list’, marking a return to global financial credibility,” he said. https://www.channelstv.com/2026/03/27/power-supply-will-be-better-tinubu-assures-nigerians/

By Ogaga Ariemu Senator and former governor of Zamfara State, Abdulaziz Yari, has hailed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his achievements in taking Nigeria out of the woods. Senator Yari said under Tinubu, the country is progressing, urging opposition parties to bury their hate and anger to see what the All Progressives Congress-led government has done for Nigerians. According to him, under President Tinubu, students no longer drop out of school over strikes or financial difficulties. He made this known in a statement on Friday via his technical committee representative, Okpokwu Ogenyi. Yari cited improved inflation data, such as inflation, which stood at 15.06 percent from 34 percent, foreign reserves at $49 billion, and other economic indices under Tinubu’s government. He further urged Nigerians not to listen to lies, propaganda, and deliberate distortions against President Tinubu’s government by opposition parties. “We call on opposition figures and those who feel aggrieved as a result of the ongoing re-engineering and rebuilding of Nigeria by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu-led government to bury their anger and open their eyes to see the benefits of the ongoing reforms of this administration, as we believe no one can see clearly if eyes are closed,” the statement reads. This comes as the ruling party gathered in Abuja on Friday through Saturday for its national convention with President Bola Tinubu, 32 governors, and over 8000 delegates present. https://dailypost.ng/2026/03/27/apc-convention-bury-your-hate-anger-tinubu-doing-well-senator-yari-tells-opposition-party/

By Hafsat Bello The Deputy Governor of Kano State, Comrade Abdulsalam Gwarzo, has reportedly stepped down from office, according to a statement released by the Kwankwasiyya Movement, though the state government has yet to issue an official confirmation. In the statement signed by its spokesperson, Dr Habibu Sale Mohammed, the political group said the decision was taken after careful consideration and in the interest of maintaining stability in the state’s governance. It explained that prevailing circumstances had made it difficult for the deputy governor to effectively carry out the full scope of his duties. "This decision, though difficult, has been taken in the overall interest of the people and the stability of governance in Kano State,” the statement said. The development follows allegations levelled against the deputy governor by the Kano State House of Assembly. However, the movement stressed that his resignation should not be interpreted as an acceptance of any wrongdoing. “The Deputy Governor maintains his innocence and firmly believes that his records in office and public service remain a testament to his integrity and commitment to the people,” the statement added. The group also disclosed that the former deputy governor intends to channel his efforts into strengthening the Kwankwasiyya Movement, with a focus on restructuring and strategic positioning ahead of the 2027 general elections. As at the time of filing this report, there has been no official confirmation or reaction from the Kano State government regarding the reported resignation. https://dailypost.ng/2026/03/27/kano-deputy-governor-reportedly-resigns/

Onuigbo felicia Troops of the Nigerian Army under Operation Hadin Kai have arrested a man suspected of belonging to the extremist group Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP). Security sources said the suspect was caught while transporting motorcycle tyres and other spare parts believed to be meant for insurgents operating around the Timbuktu Triangle in the North-East. During questioning, the man admitted that he was connected to the terrorist group. In a video shared by security analyst Zagazola Makama, the suspect explained that he was based at a camp in Kauwa, which he said was led by a commander named Hamzala and assisted by another identified as Abu Umar. “I am from the Markas of Kauwa under the leadership of Hamzala and assisted by Abu Umar. I buy the tyres from Bajoga in Gombe State and navigate through Kukuwa, Gumsa, Azare and cross to Buratai before returning to Timbuktu,” the suspect said. “I buy the MCs tyres for 13,000 naira and sell for 25,000 naira as a wholesale. I also buy plugs for 3,000 naira and sell for 600 while we buy at 350 in Nigeria.” The suspect further revealed that several ISWAP commanders had recently been killed in operations around the Timbuktu area, naming Ibba, Dusula and Farouk as some of the affected locations. When asked if he intended to leave the group, he reportedly said: “I was planning to surrender immediately after the Ramadan fast, but unfortunately, I was caught.” Military officials said the arrest is part of ongoing efforts by troops under Operation Hadin Kai to cut off supply routes and weaken the support systems that help insurgent groups operate in the North-East. They added that the campaign forms part of wider intelligence-driven operations aimed at reducing the strength of ISWAP in the region. https://www..com/talk/topic,641384.0.html

President Trump presented on Sunday his case for going to war with Iran and toppling the current regime — and warned more U.S. soldiers will likely die before the operation ends. Why it matters: Trump is publicly bracing the country for a sustained, costly military campaign, a sign America has entered an open-ended war with a rising human cost. Trump touted the elimination of Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and framed the war as the only way to prevent Iran from becoming a nuclear-armed terrorist state. Driving the news: Trump spoke hours after the U.S. military announced three U.S. service members were killed and five wounded in the fighting. "Sadly, there will likely be more before it ends," the president said in a six-minute video posted to Truth Social. "… [W]e'll do everything possible where that won't be the case, but America will avenge their deaths and deliver the most punishing blow to the terrorists who have waged war against, basically, civilization." What he's saying: Trump framed the war as a generational necessity, arguing Iran's nuclear ambitions, its financing of terrorist groups and its threats against Israel left the U.S. no choice. A nuclear-armed Iran "would be a dire threat to every American," he said. "These actions are right, and they are necessary to ensure that Americans will never have to face a radical, bloodthirsty terrorist regime armed with nuclear weapons," he said. "These intolerable threats will not continue any longer." Trump pushed back on the critics of the war, saying the strikes were "not merely to ensure security for our own time and place, but for our children and their children." https://www.axios.com/2026/03/01/trump-speech-iran-war-us-combat-deaths

The Anambra State Government has announced the termination of the Monday sit-at-home in the state “with immediate effect”. This was contained in a statement signed by the Board Secretary, Mgbemena Loveline E., on behalf of the state universal basic education board. It also warned that errant civil servants who flout the directive would either receive 20 per cent of their salary or forfeit it entirely. “Sequel to the state exco retreat held on January 21, 2026, presided by the Executive Governor, Charles Chukwuma Soludo, I am directed to inform you that the state government has directed, and also as a decision, that the protracted Monday sit-at-home in Anambra State has been abolished with immediate effect. "By this directive, any staff, both tutorial and non-tutorial, who fail to attend to school or the office on Monday will either receive 20 per cent of his/her salary or forfeit it entirely,” the statement partly read. “You are to bring the content of this letter to the notice of all staff under you and ensure adequate compliance. “Please be properly guided, as the above is the executive decision of the state government,” it added. Monday Shutdown For years, large parts of Anambra State have observed the weekly sit-at-home on Mondays — a shutdown that has grounded commercial and social activities across the state. Originally imposed by non-state actors in the South-East, the practice led to fear and reluctance among residents to go about normal business, with markets, schools, and workplaces often deserted at the start of the week. The sit-at-home order has been widely seen as harmful to the state’s economic life. Traders, transport workers, and students have been forced to remain indoors on Mondays, disrupting livelihoods and slowing economic momentum in key commercial hubs such as Onitsha. Lawmakers and stakeholders in the state have described the paralysis of business activities as damaging to the local economy, with repeated calls for residents to open shops and return to work. Governor Soludo has been at the forefront of official efforts to end the weekly closures. In April 2022, Soludo formally declared an end to the sit-at-home in Anambra, announcing that the directive would no longer be observed and offering amnesty to youths still in hideouts as part of measures to restore peace and normal economic life. He also said a peace and reconciliation committee would be set up to address challenges and engage with federal authorities on behalf of detained persons. In more recent statements, Soludo has noted that the sit-at-home phenomenon has largely diminished and that those still observing Mondays at home do so by personal choice rather than because of insecurity. He emphasised that the state is now secure, urging residents to take advantage of the improved environment to resume normal business activities. Despite official pronouncements, some residents have continued to observe the practice out of caution. https://www.channelstv.com/2026/01/24/anambra-terminates-sit-at-home-says-errant-workers-may-forfeit-salary/

Parents, school owners and teachers in the country have expressed worry over increasing abductions of schoolchildren and the fate of the 327 pupils kidnapped in Kebbi and Niger states. They note that with the current trend, no one is certain of the next educational institution that may be attacked. Schools in the North have faced a string of attacks in the past few days. On Monday, 26 schoolgirls were abducted from the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School, Maga, Kebbi State. Two of them later escaped, leaving 24 still in captivity. On Friday, 215 pupils and 12 teachers were initially reported abducted in Niger, before the number of abducted students increased to 303 after a review of the missing pupils. Despite optimism from security agencies and state governments about ongoing rescue efforts, the whereabouts of the abducted pupils remain unknown. The Chairman of the National Proprietors of Private Schools, Otubela Abayomi, said the National Executive Committee of the group would be meeting over the matter on Sunday. Speaking with Sunday PUNCH, Otubela described the spate of abductions as a setback for national development and the future of the country. “It is a matter of grave concern to us. We are also speaking to our local chairperson in that area to supply us with firsthand information aside from what is being reported in the media,” he said. Abayomi described the ongoing wave of kidnappings as “painful” and “saddening.” "It seems there is no end to the kidnapping of children and workers within schools. This is not a good omen for national development as those who are supposed to lead the country in the future are being denied quality education, and those who have not been attacked are full of fear at the moment,” he said. He added, “We are grieving. The fact that it has not affected us directly or any of us directly does not mean that we are not thinking that one man’s problem is everybody’s problem. We are concerned. I am to have a meeting with my team, the National Executive Committee, tomorrow (Sunday).” Also, the President of the National Parent Teacher Association of Nigeria, Alhaji Haruna Danjuma, described the situation as scary. He said, “We are aware that the government has also directed the closure of about 45 schools. We want the Federal Government to ensure that those that have been kidnapped are safe, rescued and brought back home. It’s like the bandits planned ahead to outsmart our security agencies. They need to save our children because this does not go down well with parents. They should bring back our children. We don’t want a repeat of the Chibok girls.” Tinubu talks tough Addressing escalating insecurity across the country, President Bola Tinubu, on Saturday, reaffirmed his commitment to “eliminate terrorist networks, dismantle banditry architecture and restore security, especially in the northern part of the country.” Represented by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abass, the President spoke at the 25th anniversary of the Arewa Consultative Forum in Kaduna. Describing the situation as “one of the gravest tests in its history, marked by a corrosion of security, a collapse of communal ethics and a distortion of the moral compass that once held our communities together,” Tinubu vowed that “no region of Nigeria will be abandoned to violence.” He stressed that peace in the north remained critical to the country’s economic progress, saying his administration would not allow any part of the country to “bleed in silence.” “No region of Nigeria will be abandoned to violence while this government looks away. We will dismantle the banditry architecture, eliminate terrorist networks and restore the safety that once defined this region,” he said. Tinubu acknowledged the deep-rooted dysfunction the region had suffered but insisted that northerners must be active participants in rebuilding trust and restoring social harmony. He said, “The security crisis inherited by this administration is deep, layered and sophisticated. Decades of dysfunction have weakened communal bonds, but hope is not lost. Rebuilding trust across communities is fundamental. Without social harmony, insecurity will persist, economic stagnation will deepen, and educational deficits will widen. The north has not failed, but it can fail the day its leaders retreat from their duty to be their brothers’ keepers.” The President also hinted at an economic rebound for the region, citing the Kolmani oil project and other major infrastructure initiatives. Speaking at the event, Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin expressed confidence that the north could overcome its security challenges with unity and coordinated action. Children cried as terrorists invaded – Catholic school principal. Meanwhile, more details have emerged on the abduction of students and staff of St Mary’s Catholic Primary and Secondary Schools in Papiri, Niger State. The school principal, Rev. Sr. Felicia Gyang, in a video clip dated November 21 and obtained by Sunday PUNCH, recounted the attack. According to Gyang, the attackers broke through multiple gates while children screamed for help. The incident, which occurred in the early hours of the morning, saw armed men arriving in large numbers, using motorbikes and vehicles to force their way into the school premises. Gyang explained that past midnight, they were suddenly awakened by bangs on different gates. "The unfortunate incident happened past 12 when we heard noise, motorbikes, and the sound of cars. Before we knew it, there were serious bangs on different gates in the compound. We got up, and I called my other sisters for us to peep out. When we peeped, we heard noise and children were crying,” she said. She noted that in the confusion, it was difficult to locate keys to certain gates, forcing her to exit through another gate. https://punchng.com/anxiety-mounts-over-fate-of-abducted-327-pupils/the

We have asked the Education Secretary if he received a circular he said no; or if he was asked to send any to us, he said no. We asked if he was verbally informed, he also said no. Let them tell the world who they gave the circular to, or through what channel did they send it. Who is lying between FG and the School management? |

Lawmakers in Benin has approved a constitutional amendment extending the presidential term of office from five years to seven and creating an upper house of parliament. In an overwhelming 90-19 vote, the new amendment sets the presidential term at seven years, renewable only once, according to a statement issued Saturday by the national assembly. https://www.intelregion.com/news/benin-republic-extends-presidential-term-to-7-years “From now on, and in accordance with amended Article 42, the President of the Republic is elected by direct universal suffrage for a term of 07 years renewable only once,” the statement reads. "No one can, in his lifetime, exercise more than two terms as President of the Republic.” The seven-year term extension was also granted to mayors and municipal councillors. The amendments come ahead of the 2026 presidential elections in the French-speaking West African nation. Presidential elections are scheduled to be held in Benin on 12 April 2026, following parliamentary elections on 11 January in accordance with the election code. President Patrice Talon, who has been in office since 2016, is currently serving his second term. Talon has publicly stated that he will not seek a third term. His candidate, Finance Minister Romuald Wadagni, is the clear favourite to win the April presidential election. In October 2025, the constitutional court ruled to exclude the principal opposition party, Les Démocrates, from participating in the upcoming 2026 presidential election. The decision follows the earlier rejection of the party’s candidacy by the electoral commission for failing to meet requirements such as sufficient sponsorship and payment of the registration fee. With Les Démocrates disqualified, the field for the next presidential vote has shifted significantly. Observers note that the ruling deepens concerns about fairness and political openness in a country once regarded as a model of democracy in the region. Why do you think the lawmaker extends the presidential term close to the election, and do you think the country's democratic reputation can withstand the new law? Let's know your views in the comment section. https://www.intelregion.com/news/benin-republic-extends-presidential-term-to-7-years
