BY JANEFRANCES CHIBUNDU Former Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo has called on the church to question the wealth sources of politicians making donations to support evangelism. Osinbajo spoke on Saturday at the inaugural lecture in honour of the late senior pastor of Fountain Life Church Taiwo Odukoya. The lecture titled ‘Strengthening the Christian voice in government or public office’ was held at the Civic Center, Victoria Island, Lagos. Osinbajo admonished the church to teach good values that Christians can hold on to when they find themselves in public service. How often do those who receive money from politicians and from other sources ask the source of the money? the former vice-president asked. “So the question is not how many Christians are in government, business, or professions? The question is, what are they equipped with? “What are the relevant principles of the gospel that they know and apply in their daily and professional or public lives?” Tolu Odukoya, associate senior pastor of the church, said the lecture would carry on the legacy of empowerment of her late father. “It is with great joy and a sense of gratitude that I welcome you all to the inaugural Daniel Odukoya lecture,” Tolu said. “Today marks the beginning of a significant tradition in our church, a tribute to my father, our father, the founding father of the Fountain of Life Church.” Ben Akabueze, director-general (DG) of the budget office of the federation, who delivered the lecture, emphasised the need for Christians in power to uphold good tenets. “In today’s world, governments operate in a diverse and pluralistic society, thus diversity is reflected not only in the cultural and ethnic background but also in the multiplicities of world views,” Akabueze said “Christianity co-exists alongside other faiths and circular perspectives, these diversities necessitate a respectful and collaborative approach to governance. “It is important for Christians to engage with respect and understanding towards other faiths, which should not mean compromising one’s belief but rather, finding ways to express such belief. He urged Christians in power to ask for forgiveness and retrace their step when they derail. “I encourage each of you to step into leadership roles, your presence and voice in these spaces can make a profound difference,” he added. “No one is invaluable and leaders will make mistakes, Christians in public office should demonstrate humility and the willingness to seek forgiveness.” https://www.thecable.ng/osinbajo-church-must-shun-donations-from-unexplained-affluence/amp/

President Bola Tinubu has described the Eid-el-Kabir as an event that denotes sacrifice, faith and obedience to the will of the Almighty, while assuring Nigerians that their sacrifice will not be in vain. The President who called on Nigerians to reflect on the teachings of the season, said that his administration would continue to prioritise "their social and economic well-being." Tinubu said these in his message signed by Ajuri Ngelale, his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, which congratulated the Muslim faithful and prayed that Allah accepts their supplications and acts of obedience. “The President emphasises that sacrifice and duty are essential ingredients to nation-building, noting that it takes collective purpose, will, and action to bring about great change.” The President called on citizens to spare a prayer for the nation for continuous peace and stability while working according to purpose in promoting unity, peace, and progress. He also “acknowledges the sacrifices that Nigerians have made in the past one year as his administration sets the nation on a firm pedestal of growth and development. “President Tinubu affirms that the sacrifices and great expectations of citizens will not come to nought as already propitious outcomes are beginning to manifest with the economy strengthening and vibrancy returning to critical sectors. “The President reassures Nigerians that his administration is prioritising their physical, social, and economic security and will not relent on this noble endeavour.” He also celebrates with the Muslim Ummah, saying Eid-el-Kabir is an event that denotes sacrifice, faith, and obedience to the will of the Almighty. President Tinubu therefore enjoined Nigerians to reflect on the essence of the occasion, which bears strong meaning and significance for the nation. https://saharareporters.com/2024/06/15/tinubu-sallah-message-asks-nigerians-not-lose-their-great-expectations

By Matthew Atungwu A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and former chairman of the party in Lagos State, Segun Adewale, said he is dumping his party to join the All Progressives Congress, APC. Adewale revealed this at a news conference on Saturday in Lagos. The PDP in Alimosho Local Government Area of the state suspended Adewale indefinitely last week for allegedly causing disaffection in PDP and tarnishing the party’s image. The ex-PDP chairman, before his suspension, had earlier attributed the failure of the party to win elections in the state since 1999 to corruption and disunity among party members. Speaking at the news conference, Adewale said: “I am not contesting election in 2027 but going to the ruling party to support the president. My next move is to go to Abuja and prostrate to Tinubu,” he said. Reacting to his suspension, Adewale said his reported suspension by PDP in Alimosho LGA was orchestrated by those fighting him for exposing how they mismanaged campaign funds during the 2023 election. He added that his suspension had no effect, as his ward had absolute confidence in him and had distanced itself from the reported suspension. https://dailypost.ng/2024/06/15/im-joining-apc-suspended-ex-lagos-pdp-chairman/

By Priscilla Dennis The decision by Niger State Governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago, to travel to Saudi Arabia for the Hajj pilgrimage, alongside the deputy governor, Comrade Yakubu Garba and Speaker of the House of Assembly, Abdulmalik Sarkin-Daji, has sparked outrage among residents of the state. It was gathered that the governor and his deputy departed the state between Sunday and Monday for the yearly pilgrimage. Residents have accused the governor of not being serious with governance, claiming he had abandoned his responsibility alongside his deputy, leaving the people to their fate in the face of severe security challenges in the state. Opposition political parties in the state expressed displeasure over the development, noting that the absence of the governor, deputy governor, Speaker and majority of members of the State Executive Council had paralyzed government activities. Alhaji Umar Danladi Abdulhamid of the Nigeria Peoples Party, NNPP, condemned the development. "I am shocked at the way and manner Governor Mohammed Umar Bago administration has been operating without respect to the feelings of the citizens in spite of the current security problems facing the state. "More shocking is abandoning the state without transmitting power in line with the Constitution. It is not a good omen for the state. This calls for caution and reversal,” he observed. Similarly, the Niger North Zonal Chairman of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Alhaji Yahaya Ability, said the All Progressives Congress, APC, is known for outright violation of the laws especially under the leadership of Governor Mohammed Umar Bago of Niger State. According to him, “Most unfortunate is that Governor Bago left the country to perform Hajj in Saudi Arabia without remorse. He left the state the very day two military personnel were shot by the bandits at Tegina, Rafi Local Government Area while four LGAs, Rafi Shiroro, Munya and Mariga, were under attack daily and scores being killed. "The matter is worse because the Assembly Speaker Abdulmalik Sarkin-Daji who supposed to receive a written letter of transmission of power also left together with the governor. This goes to show that the Assembly is a stooge and under the pocket of the governor.” The zonal PDP chairman further argued, “Section 190 (1) of the 1999 Constitution as amended cannot be observed in breach as it makes clear provision for absence of a governor without anticipation of both of them leaving their seats at the same time.” He urged the people of the state to go back to the drawing board and ensure they vote out the ruling APC in 2027, for good governance. Ability called for the immediate return of the governor, the deputy governor and other government officials, to the state, to ensure security as well as in respect to the nation’s Constitution. Efforts to get the response of the state government to the issues raised by the opposition parties were not successful. The Secretary to the State Government, SSG, Alhaji Abubakar Usman, and the Chief Press Secretary, CPS, to the Governor, Bologi Ibrahim, refused to respond when calls were put through to them. Currently, it appears that the state is being administered by the SSG alongside the Chief of Staff, CoS, to the Governor, Abdullah Usman Gbatamagi. However, a source in the government, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, noted that the governor “can manage the state from any part of the world with the aid of information technology”. https://dailypost.ng/2024/06/12/outrage-in-niger-as-gov-deputy-speaker-state-exco-members-travel-to-saudi-for-hajj/

By Olugbenga I've Nigerians have taken to social media to react to the video showing the moment President Bola Tinubu slipped while boarding the presidential parade vehicle at Eagles Square in Abuja. PUNCH Online earlier reported that the President slipped while climbing the parade truck at the venue of the 2024 Democracy Day. The President approached the vehicle shortly after he arrived at the venue of the programme, but lost his footing momentarily as he was about to step into the vehicle. However, despite the slip, the President quickly regained his balance and continued with the proceedings with the help of his security aides. The event at Eagles Square was part of a series of events to mark the country’s Democracy Day celebration. However, some netizens took to social media to mock the President over the incident, while others downplayed it because the president went on with the ceremonial rounds. Tinubu gave the assurance on Wednesday in a nationwide broadcast commemorating Nigeria’s 25th anniversary of democracy. The President appealed to Nigerians to endure the hardships of economic reform, saying that the steps are required to put the country on solid economic footing. "As we continue to reform the economy, I shall always listen to the people and will never turn my back on you,” he said. Tinubu also spoke on the recent talks with organized labour on a new national minimum wage, adding that the government negotiated in good faith and will shortly present an executive measure to the National Assembly to entrench the agreed-upon salary for the next five years or less. By Ignatius Igwe As Nigeria celebrates 25 years of uninterrupted return to democracy, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 election, Atiku Abubakar, has berated the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the nation’s economic woes. June 12 is a day set aside annually to celebrate democracy. Currently, many Nigerians live in poverty as the nation faces myriads of security challenges. In his message to Nigerians on Tuesday, the former vice president said the past nine years of the APC administration has brought hardship on the people. "The past nine years has thrown up a regime of extreme hardship manifested in excruciating poverty and unprecedented levels of violence and insecurity upon our people,” he said. "Sadly, the ruling All Progressives Congress is to blame for bringing forth this dawn of gloom.” While criticising opposition parties for failing to unite and form a coalition capable of unseating the ruling APC, he berated the opposition parties for failing to present a governance plan that would gain the confidence of Nigerians. To Atiku, one of the secondary purposes of declaring June 12 as Democracy Day in Nigeria is to commemorate the history of our prolonged journey toward becoming a stable democratic nation. The former vice president asserted that there is no substitute for democracy as a form of government. "Whereas our current democratic dispensation is a quarter of a century old, it will not be out of place to pay tributes to the sacrifices made by many patriots, chiefly among them Basorun MKO Abiola and his beloved wife, Alhaja (Mrs) Kudirat Abiola, Tafida Shehu Yar’Adua and Alfred Rewane, among many others. “The historical timeline of the struggle that birthed this democracy is abundant with a series of coalitions and alliances amongst the political leaderships of that era to flush away the vestiges of military and dictatorial governance in order to return power to the people. "It is commendable that for 25 years, we have witnessed an uninterrupted season of electoral politics. It is an unprecedented epoch in our history. “It is worthy of celebration and commendation must go to the people of our great country. I must also congratulate the political class for having embraced the rectitude of nurturing a democracy, as well as the civil society. It is important that all stakeholders continue to do their bit to ensure the sustainability of our democracy.” https://www.channelstv.com/2024/06/11/june-12-atiku-blames-apc-for-nigerias-poverty-insecurity/

By Abdulyassar Abdulhamid Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, Minister of Labour and Employment, has said that Nigerians will suffer if the National Labour Congress (NLC) insists on strike. Nkeiruka Onyejeocha stated this during an interview on Channels TV’s Politics Today on Monday. On Monday, the organized labour embarked on an indefinite nationwide strike after the union failed to teach an agreement with the federal government over minimum wage. But during the interview, Onyejeocha said the NLC pulled out when negotiations were ongoing, calling on the union to return to the negotiation table. She said, “We know what the issues are and we are available for discussions and we hope they will be resolved; but going to strike will take the matter to the extreme with a lot of negative implications to both our economy and the welfare of the citizens. “If the strike continues, the citizens will suffer and they have started suffering. Our students who supposed to be taking exams have been affected because they can’t find means of transportation to exams centres. "On the other hand there are people who can’t eat until they go to their places of work. Some people who work at Secretariat live daily on what they get from the officers there. "On production side, we know that when activities are shut down, it will affect our economy. Businesses will definitely be affected. Social life has also been affected too. Hospitals have been affected. There are people who had been scheduled to be operated today, but the doctors can’t access their work places. Somebody might have died.” https://dailytrust.com/nigerians-will-suffer-if-nlc-insists-on-strike-labour-minister/

Deborah Tolu-Kolawole, Dirisu Yakubu and Deborah Musa The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, (SAN), has faulted the organised labour over the nationwide strike it is starting today (Monday). Fagbemi, in a letter to the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress leaders, dated June 1, 2024, insisted that the strike over the new minimum was a violation of a subsisting National Industrial Court order restraining the unions from grounding the nation through the strike action. The AGF said this as a meeting convened by the National Assembly leaders on Sunday night failed to achieve its objective following the NLC and TUC’s insistence on going ahead with today’s strike. The meeting, which was presided over by the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, was attended by the NLC president Joe Ajaero, and his TUC counterpart, Festus Osifo. Also, the Minister of State for Labour, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, affirmed that the government could not pay more than N60,000, which she said represented a 100 per cent increase on the current minimum wage. On Sunday, the Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, told The PUNCH that the labour leaders might have an ulterior motive, stressing that the minimum wage offer they presented was unrealistic for both the federal and state governments. N60,000 offer On Friday, Organised Labour declared an indefinite nationwide strike due to the Federal Government’s refusal to increase its new minimum wage offer above N60,000. The President of the NLC, Joe Ajaero, announced that the strike followed failed negotiations between the government and organised labour, and its refusal to reverse the withdrawal of the power sector subsidy and increase in electricity tariff. The unions had earlier given the May 31, 2024 deadline for the conclusion of new minimum wage negotiations. The government had raised its minimum wage offer from N57,000 to N60,000 while the labour unions reduced their demand to N494,000 from N497,000 proposed earlier. The labour leaders initially demanded N615,000. But the negotiations deadlocked as the government maintained its offer of N60,000, leading to the declaration of a nationwide indefinite strike. However, the AGF in his letter addressed to the presidents of the NLC, Ajaero and the TUC, Festus Usifo, strongly condemned the planned industrial action, stating that it was wrong of organised labour to call out workers at a time when the government and other stakeholders were working towards determining a new national minimum wage. The letter was copied to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, the Chief of Staff to the President, the Minister of State for Labour and Employment, the National Security Adviser, the Inspector-General of Police and the Director-General, the Department of State Service. Citing the Trade Union Dispute Act 2004, Fagbemi argued that the NLC and the TUC were required to issue mandatory strike notices of a minimum of 15 days. The letter read, “It is pertinent to observe that at no time did either the NLC or the TUC declare a trade dispute with their employees or issue any strike notice as required by law for such strike action to be legitimate and lawful. ‘Strike premature’ "I wish to note that this latest declaration of strike action by organised labour is premature at a time when the Federal Government and other stakeholders involved in the tripartite committee on the determination of a new national minimum wage had not declared an end to negotiation,” Fagbemi noted. Emphasising the significance of following due process in declaring a labour strike, the justice minister added, “By the Trade Union Dispute Act 2004, NLC and TUC are required to issue mandatory strike notices of a minimum of 15 days. “It is pertinent to observe that at no time did either NLC or TUC declare a trade dispute with their employees or issue any strike notice as required by law for such strike action to be legitimate and lawful. "It is not in doubt that the fundamental importance of the 15-day notice is underscored by the fact that both NLC and TUC failed to comply with the statutory condition precedents (dispute resolution procedures) provided for under section 18(b)(a) of the Trade dispute Act 2004, as amended.” He also stressed that the proposed strike action is in breach of relevant conditions itemized under section 31(6) of the Trade Union Act, as amended. “No person, trade union or employer shall take part in a strike or lockout or engage in any conduct in contemplation of any furtherance of trade dispute unless the person, trade union or employer is not engaged in the provision of essential services,” he declared, referencing the law. The AGF further drew the attention of the labour leaders to an interim Injunction order granted by the National Industrial Court on June 5, 2023, in suit no: NICN/ABJ/158/23, between the Federal Government of Nigeria & Anor V. Nigerian Labour Congress & Anor. The order restrained both NLC and TUC from embarking on any industrial action or strike of any nature. The AGF noted that this “Order has neither been stayed nor set aside, therefore it remains binding on the labour unions.” Fagbemi explained that the conditions outlined by Nigerian laws for exercising the right to strike were in tandem with the International Labour Organisation principles concerning the right to strike. He assured that the government would adopt a conciliatory approach to resolving matters about workers’ and citizens’ welfare in the spirit of collective bargaining. He appealed to the unions to shelve the planned strike and return to the negotiation meetings. Addressing journalists after the meeting with the National Assembly leaders, the TUC President, Osifo, said, “The Senate President appealed to us to call off the strike. “But we can’t sit here and call off the strike because we have other organs. We will take the appeals to our various organs. “We don’t have the powers to call off the strike action. For now, the strike action will commence, while we discuss with our organs.” But Akpabio appealed to the unions to shelve the strike, adding that “When the hospitals are closed, most poor people will die. Those who are even on oxygen will die. Those needing medical services will die. Goods and services will not move freely, productivity will reduce drastically. The living standards of Nigerians will also be impaired.” Also speaking, Speaker Abbas said “There are three takeaways that we can go home with. One is that we have agreed to prevail on the government to revisit the issue of the 35k paid to Nigerian workers wage award that was started in October last year and stopped in February. We agreed that the wage award should continue until such a time that the minimum wage is agreed. We also agreed that the NLC and TUC should go and consult to suspend their strike as soon as possible to allow for negotiations to continue.” https://punchng.com/minimum-wage-agf-tackles-labour-as-nass-fails-to-stop-strike/

By Kayode Oyero After a four-hour meeting with the leadership of the National Assembly on Sunday evening in Abuja, the leadership of the Organised Labour says there is no going back on the nationwide industrial action slated to start on Monday, June 3, 2024. “For now, we don’t have the power to call off the strike, tomorrow (Monday) morning, the strike will kick off as we take their (NASS) plea asking us to call off the strike to our various organs,” said Festus Osifo after the meeting with NASS leadership. Earlier, Osifo, the President of the Trade Union Congress (TUC); and his counterpart in the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero; met with Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas. in Abuja. The meeting was part of last-minute efforts by the legislators to persuade aggrieved workers to shelve their planned industrial action for a new minimum wage. The National Assembly said the meeting was to “avert the impending industrial action” to commence on Monday, June 3, 2024, “which would have severe repercussions on the populace and economy”. The decision of the Organised Labour followed the deadlock between the Federal Government and the unions over a new national minimum wage and reversal of the recent hike in electricity tariffs. The Chairmen of the Senate and House Committees on Labour, Employment and Productivity respectively, Diket Plang, and Adegboyega Adefarati, were also at the meeting. The labour unions had said the current minimum wage of ₦30,000 can no longer cater to the wellbeing of an average Nigerian worker, lamenting that not all governors are paying the current wage award which expired in April 2024, five years after the Minimum Wage Act of 2019 was signed by former President Muhammadu Buhari. The Act should be reviewed every five years to meet up with contemporary economic demands of workers. Labour later handed the Federal Government a May 31 deadline for the a new minimum wage. On May 31, the workers’ organs in the country declared a nationwide strike beginning from Monday, June 3, 2024 over the government committee’s inability to agree on a new minimum wage and reversal of electricity tariff hike. During the failed talks with the government, Labour rejected three government’s offers, the latest being N60,000. Both the TUC and the NLC subsequently pulled out of negotiations, insisting on ₦497,000 as the new minimum wage. https://www.channelstv.com/2024/06/02/strike-labour-in-last-minute-talks-with-akpabio-abbas/

By Abdulrahman Zakariyau The 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, said a merger between the PDP and Labour Party is possible. Atiku added that members of the party would decide his fate in the 2027 general elections. In a recent interview with BBC Hausa Service, Atiku said it was too soon to determine if he would run for the presidency in the upcoming elections. The former Vice President mentioned that his recent meeting with Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi might indicate a possible alliance leading up to the 2027 general elections. Responding to questions about the meeting with Obi, Atiku said, “It’s just a normal friendly meeting that we often have, particularly among us in the opposition parties. Such meetings are healthy for Nigeria’s democracy and in the country’s interest.” On whether this will bring about a merger, he said, “Yes, it’s very much possible. We can merge to achieve a common goal. So, it’s possible, and nothing can stop it if we wish to achieve that.” The former Vice President, who denied that the choice of presidential candidate might frustrate the merger discussion, said, “That’s not true. That challenge will not arise. I can tell you that the choice of who will fly the flag of the party won’t be an issue.” Atiku stated that if in 2027 the party determines that it is the South-East’s turn and selects Peter Obi, he will readily offer his support. He stated ” I have said repeatedly and I even said it before the 2023 general elections that if PDP decides to zone the presidential ticket to the South or South-East specifically, I won’t contest it. As long as it’s the decision of the party, I will abide by it. But I contested the 2023 presidential ticket because it was thrown open to all members of the party. "If the party decides that it’s the turn of the South-East and Peter Obi is chosen, I won’t hesitate to support him.” On why he’s still in active politics, Atiku said, “Yes, we can’t keep quiet and watch things go wrong. People are suffering and we are committed to making Nigeria a better place. "It means you are not tired of politics of Nigeria? Not at all. I am still in active politics in Nigeria, at least, as long as God permits. “My age doesn’t stop the young ones from testing their fate. Everybody, irrespective of age, is allowed to aspire to be anybody in the society, politically or otherwise.” Regarding his 2027 Presidential ambition, the former Vice President said “That would depend on the decision of my party. I can’t make any categorical statement on that. It’s the duty of the party to decide on the way to go in the next election. "Until that time comes. Let’s just wait and see how it will turn out. “It must not be interpreted like that. I must not be eyeing elections to have meetings with political friends and associates. Currently, we are practising democracy in this country which we fought for with our blood.” Last week, Labour Party’s presidential candidate Peter Obi held a private meeting with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and several PDP leaders in Abuja. Obi also met separately with former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido and former Senate President Bukola Saraki, sparking speculation about a possible coalition for the 2027 general elections. Obi was a PDP member until 2022 when he left to pursue his presidential ambitions with the Labour Party. He finished third behind Atiku in the February 23 presidential election, which was won by Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress. Atiku blamed Obi’s departure from the PDP for his loss to Tinubu. Analysts argued that Atiku’s 6,984,520 votes combined with Obi’s 6,101,533 votes could have secured a win against Tinubu, who received 8,794,726 votes. Monday’s meeting marked the first public interaction between Obi and Atiku since the election. Social media and online platforms were flooded with viral photos of Obi’s meetings with the three PDP figures on Monday. In 2019, Atiku and Obi ran together on the PDP ticket but were defeated by former President Muhammadu Buhari of the APC. However, due to internal conflicts, Obi, who was Atiku’s running mate in 2019, left the PDP and ran as the Labour Party’s candidate in the 2023 presidential election. https://punchng.com/2027-lp-pdp-merger-possible-atiku/?amp

The violent protest, which took the entire staff of the health facility by surprise, lasted over two hours before police operatives from the Lafenwa Divisional Headquarters intervened, and brought the situation under control. In the commotion that ensued, a psychiatric doctor alongside three other nurses allegedly escaped being killed during the violent protest, over the alleged poor treatment they are daily subjected to at the facility. It was gathered that the mentally unbalanced persons at the Aro Neuropsychiatric facility were protesting poor feeding, poor sanitary system, as well as the absence of alternative electricity each time the electricity distribution company seized light at the hospital. Some relatives of the patients on admission, said that the matter had been ongoing for a while before some of the partially healed patients, resorted to protesting the situation even when it became obvious that the management of the health facility would not remedy the situation. A female relative of one of the patients on admission, who pleaded anonymity, said that the least amount being paid by each of the affected patients ranged from N500,000 to N700, 000 depending on the length of their stay at the facility. When contacted, the Public Relations Officer of the facility, Ajibola said the matter was “just an internal affair”, which has been redressed and is not worth being reported as news. Speaking on the development, the Lafenwa Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Enatufe Omoh, said only one of the psychiatric doctors was assaulted, as he sustained varying degrees of teeth bites from the protesting on-admission patients.

The hope of the EmiLoKan cult, and by extension the totality of the political class, is for ordinary Nigerians to continually misidentify their actual adversary so their immiseration and ruin can be inviolably complete. What do we mean when we say electoral consequences—and consequences for whom? There is this widespread, almost unquestionable, consensus—mostly among dissidents—that it is all well and good to consciously disparage, alienate, and condemn the masses to the dead weight of the present socio-economic miseries ravaging the entirety of this country. The justification for this, in a nutshell, is that a sizablemass of the public, particularly in the South-Westand Core-North, voted for the recently enthroned colossal affliction of the EmiLoKan variety, otherwise known as Bola Ahmed Tinubu. We are told that those who are complicit in the enthronement of this catastrophe, even if marginally, must be thrown to the wolves of socioeconomic privation and abandoned to suffer the consequences of undesirable electoral outcomes. Understandably, however swift or sly human actions may be, even when they are exercised as electoral choices, they are inexorably shadowed by their consequences. And yet, to insist on consequences without interrogating the whole premise and its accompanying circumstances is to miss the vital lessons of history. Concretely, the first lesson that the champions of electoral consequences must note is more cautionary than punitive, and this is the fact that they have rendered themselves victims of a blinding political fallacy. In the main, this mirage is animated by the assumption that the masses of this country were so free in the heavily militarized and thuggified 2023 general elections that they played a decisive role in the self-selection of the incumbent illegitimate President of Nigeria. the masses of our country, indeed to understand the multidimensionally poor who constitute the majority of our population; the impoverished peasants who can no longer go to farm because ethnoreligious terrorists are all too willing to seize their land and viciously end their lives to boot; the unpaid and underpaid workers;the underemployed with MScs and PhDs playing sentry to the homes of the political class and the bourgeoisie; the indentured laborers trapped in bourgeois upper-middle-class and upper classhomes and subjected to dehumanizing tasks day in, day out by people (sometimes half their age)with ghastly intentions to subject even theoffspring of the indentured to generationalservitude or worse—to understand them all, one must be willing to fully submit to the internalization of the absurd, to consciously make a break with the abstraction of the conditions of the masses, the workers and peasantry and the dire economic conditions on the streets, and tomeet them all with humility and feeling at every point of their existential predispositions without losing the exigency of rigorous intellection. https://saharareporters.com/2024/05/12/emilokan-burden-electoral-consequences-raphael-adebayo

By Yusha’u A. Ibrahim No fewer than 49 persons have been reported killed by bandits during a five-day-long operation in Zamfara State. The deceased, according to residents, were killed in five affected villages in Anka Local Government Area of Zamfara State from Tuesday to Saturday. According to the locals, 18 persons were killed in Farar-Kasa village; 22 in Dangulbi, two in Duhuwa, four in Tsatsomawa and three others in Yar Sabaya villages respectively. A resident of Anka town, Malam Idris Anka (not real name) said the bandits have been attacking communities in the local government since the beginning of this week. He said, “Banditry has become a daily affair in this part of Zamfara state. To be honest with you, we are tired of this menace. The bandits are operating as if we do not have a government in this country. These people are almost everything in our communities; they are the police, the traditional rulers and the community leaders. “They can attack any community at will, place levy on any community they so wish and abduct anybody in any community and nobody has the right to say no whatever directives they give.” Another resident, who doesn’t want to be named, said he narrowly escaped the bandits along Anka-Bagega road today (Saturday), saying “two bandits in military uniform erected an illegal check-point along the road today (yesterday) robbing road users. Mallam Bello Muhammad, a commercial driver, appealed to both the federal and state governments to come to their aid by providing enough security personnel to the area, as according to him non-presence of security is aiding banditry in the local government. When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, Zamfara State Command, ASP Yazid Abubakar promised to contact the Divisional Police Officer in charge of Anka Division for details; however, he neither called back this reporter nor answered several calls put to him. Meanwhile, the Zamfara State Government has rejected an alleged move by the federal government for a peace pact with bandits in the state. https://dailytrust.com/again-bandits-kill-49-in-zamfara/

Areport by the United States government has said that Israel's use of US-provided weapons in Gaza likely violated international humanitarian law, but without finding specific violations that would require a military aid ban. In the findings of a state department report - known as the national security memorandum - the Joe Biden administration said it has found "reasonable" evidence to conclude that its ally had breached international law, Sky News reports. The Israeli military is facing increased international scrutiny as its military operation in Gaza enters its eighth month, claiming the lives of more than 34,000 Palestinians, mostly civilians. In February, President Joe Biden ordered the Pentagon and the State Department to “obtain certain assurances” over Israel’s use of US-made weapons and to report back to Congress. A summary of the findings was released to the public on Friday. But it added it was unable to link specific US weapons to individual Israeli strikes. The report said: "Given Israel's significant reliance on US-made defence articles, it is reasonable to assess that defence articles have been used by Israeli security forces since 7 October in instances inconsistent with its international humanitarian law obligations or with established best practices for mitigating civilian harm." It added that while Israel has the knowledge, experience and tools to implement the "best practices for mitigating civilian harm in its military operations" evidence from the ground - including high levels of civilian casualties - raise "substantial questions whether the IDF is using them effectively in all cases". Turning to the issue of aid getting into Gaza, the US government report said it does not currently assess that the Israeli government is prohibiting or restricting the transport or delivery of aid. Crucially, the report stops short of saying that Israel has violated the terms under which it is able to use US weapons to carry out its offensive in Gaza. Israel declared war on Hamas in Gaza following the militant group’s deadly October 7 incursion, which claimed over 1,200 lives, while hundreds of Israelis were taken hostage. Although IDF tanks rolled into the outskirts of Rafah on Monday, with Israeli troops securing parts of the city, but Biden believes that Israel’s “limited” operation has yet to cross Washington’s red line. On Friday, Israel’s war cabinet approved a “measured expansion” of the ground operation in Rafah, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu pledging to continue the military campaign and “fight with our fingernails” if the US halts in the supply of weapons. https://saharareporters.com/2024/05/11/gaza-war-us-government-report-admits-israel-violated-international-law

Meanwhile, the approval ratings for China and Russia have improved in the world over the past year, according to the poll. The United States has seen its approval rating deteriorate in the Middle East and even in Europe, according to respondents from 53 countries. Meanwhile, the approval ratings for China and Russia have improved in the world over the past year, according to the poll. Dubbed Democracy Perception Index 2024, the survey was compiled by German company Latana, on behalf of the Alliance of Democracies, an NGO headed by former NATO secretary-general Anders Fogh Rasmussen. Russia and China are now viewed as positively as the US in most of the surveyed countries in Asia and the Middle East/North Africa (MENA), as Washington’s approval has plummeted due to the conflict in Gaza, RT reports. Among Europeans, support for the US has also seen a decline. “For the first time since the start of the (President Joe) Biden administration, many Western European countries have returned to net negative perceptions of the US,” according to Latana senior researcher, Frederick DeVeaux. The reversal of previously positive attitudes has been “particularly stark in Germany, Austria, Ireland, Belgium and Switzerland,” DeVeaux said. America’s global reputation has taken a beating since 2023, particularly in Muslim-majority countries surveyed – Algeria, Egypt, Indonesia, Malaysia, Morocco, and Türkiye. According to the researchers, this can be attributed to President Joe Biden’s unequivocal support for Israel’s war on Gaza. Meanwhile, sentiments on Russia and China in every region except Europe are steadily getting more positive, the survey found. The European region is the only one besides the US that still supports cutting economic ties with Russia over the Ukraine conflict. The report shows the rest of the world prefers to keep doing business with Moscow. According to the report, the world is also divided “between the West and the rest” when it comes to sanctioning Beijing if it were to “invade” the island of Taiwan. The Democracy Perception Index is an annual survey carried out in 53 countries. This 2024 research canvassed some 63,000 respondents for opinions about “democracy, geopolitics and global power players.” https://saharareporters.com/2024/05/10/us-popularity-shrinking-globally-russia-chinas-approval-ratings-improve-over-israels-war

Students of Princeton University, New Jersey, United States of America have embarked on a hunger strike as a part of pro-Palestine protests in the university and college campuses against Israel's war with Hamas in Gaza. There have been weeks of demonstrations in US university campuses with the protesters facing counterattacks and arrests from Israeli supporters and the police. As videos of the Princeton University students calling on other students to join the hunger strike surfaced, CBS News quoted Princeton Israeli Apartheid Divest as saying in a statement that "Our hunger strike is a response to the administration's refusal to engage with our demands for dissociation and divestment from Israel. We refuse to be silenced by the University administration's intimidation and repression tactics. “We struggle together in solidarity with the people of Palestine. We commit our bodies to their liberation." The statement added that the students participating in the hunger strike would abstain from all food and drinks (except water) until the university meets with students to discuss divestment and a "cultural boycott of Israel." The group also wants Princeton to reverse "all campus bans and evictions of students." It was also reported that last week, 13 people were arrested at Princeton after an attempted sit-in at Clio Hall. Out of the 13 people arrested were five undergraduates, six graduate students, a postdoctoral researcher and "one person not affiliated with the University." CBS News reported that the 13 people arrested received summonses for trespassing and were banned from campus. The students were disciplined by Princeton, including a possible suspension or expulsion. Princeton students have had a pro-Palestinian encampment on campus for nearly two weeks, similar to others on college campuses across the county. https://saharareporters.com/2024/05/08/pro-palestine-protests-us-princeton-university-students-embark-hunger-strike-warn

By Daniel Ayantoye Leader of the Yoruba self-determination Movement, Ilana Omo Oodua, Prof Banji Akintoye shares his thoughts with DANIEL AYANTOYE on the group’s letter to President Bola Tinubu for the establishment of a negotiation committee for the Yoruba nation, among other issues In a letter to President Bola Tinubu recently, your group asked for a peaceful breakaway of Yoruba people from Nigeria. What informed this decision? We have studied the world situation concerning breaking away and so on, and we have found that the ones who approach their struggle peacefully and in a law-abiding manner are more likely to succeed. The others who fought and threatened their government and said nasty things about other people and the government are unlikely to succeed. So, we decided to follow the line that promises success. Your group gave the President two months to set up a committee to negotiate the exit of the Yoruba people. What are the areas you expect the committee to look at? When they invite us to negotiate, we will negotiate the things that will make it possible for us to leave (Nigeria) without any encumbrance. For instance, Nigeria has some debt. If we leave Nigeria, then some decision will have to be taken about how much of the debt would be allocated to the Yoruba. It has to be negotiated carefully. Also, since there are assets, we will negotiate how much of those assets will go with us. There has to be an agreement to create friendly relations in the new Nigerian space. We pledged in our letter that we would make sure that our new country helped other people. We have looked very carefully, and we are ready to do it. Those are the kinds of things that we will have to settle with the negotiation committee. But what if the negotiation committee refused to allow the Yoruba people to go, what will your group do? If they say we should not leave, they have a right to say that. But we will tell them that their statement is not final. We will continue to seek other ways to leave. Your demand came barely a few days after you distanced your group from the invasion of the Oyo State Secretariat by a group of camouflage-wearing persons. Why did this happen almost at the same time? No, we were already preparing our letter; we’ve been working on those letters for months. Onitiri (Modupe Onitiri-Abiola) has this habit of eavesdropping and finding out that we are about to do something, and then she will do another to intercept our action. But we have decided not to let that bother us anymore. Whatever we plan to do, we go ahead and do it. Some political analysts have described what they did as a treasonable offence. Do you subscribe to such a position? They committed treason. She made a statement that she had taken over the government of Yoruba land in Nigeria. She brought somebody sworn in as interim prime minister known as Adele in Yoruba language, and she sent some boys to go and take over the government in Ibadan. All of that together amounts to treason. Twenty-nine of them were arrested and remanded in the prison custody. Are you not concerned with what they are going through especially because they are supporters of the same cause? I am concerned about the welfare of every Yoruba person, but they have handled their matter in such a way that we cannot help them. Treason is the highest offence under the law of every country on earth. When you commit treason, you have committed the highest offence imaginable in that country. So, we who are their people cannot help them. But will you urge the government to probably temper justice with mercy and release them? It is very risky to do that now. When the government is handling treason charges against some people, and you, their brother, father, and friend, are telling the government to temper justice with mercy, you don’t know what the reaction of the government is. So, it’s better not to mess around. Will you say Onitiri-Abiola lacks the right to make such a declaration, even when she is one of your members? Nobody has the right to make that kind of declaration; nobody! Some have called for her arrest. Are you in support of that? Let the law take its cause. I do not add to it and I do not subtract from it. The son of MKO Abiola, Jamiu, in a recent interview, said the family was not in support of a Yoruba nation. Are you not concerned with the development? I’m not concerned. Everybody has a right to be for or against the Yoruba Nation. That’s the right of everybody. What is important to me is what we are doing, I am also interested in what our chances look like. Our chances as of now look very good. In the letter, your group said it had earlier sent a letter to former President Muhammadu Buhari while he was in office. Why did you think the letter was ignored by Buhari? It was not ignored. We know that he received it and he expressed concern immediately he did, but a few weeks after, we heard that the posture in Abuja was that a major election was on the way and that was not the time to enter into a major thing we were asking for. There are concerns about why the call for a Yoruba nation is coming again, especially since a Yoruba man is now the President. Did this not cross your mind at any point? A President of Nigeria is a President of Nigeria. That’s all. I won’t say more than that. But do you see him (President Bola Tinubu) possibly approving the breakaway of Yoruba people from Nigeria since he is currently in power? He may not assent to it, but we need to make our case so that the international community will know that we want our country. https://punchng.com/yoruba-nation-doesnt-mean-hatred-for-tinubu-akintoye/?amp
