PoliticsPDP: Troubled, Tired And Terrified by Fareke(op): 8:28am On Sep 07, 2024
By Dave Baro-Thomas

The founding fathers of the Peoples’ Democratic Party, PDP, were the movers and shakers of the Nigerian nation. They were men and women of uncanny sagacity and an assemblage of political, intellectual, and economic colossus knitted for the rebirth of a nation simmering from the hot coals of military misadventures and tyranny.

Most were heroes of the June 12 struggle except the highest beneficiary – former President Obasanjo, a non-June 12 crony. Time will fail to mention names, but a roll call of these men brings irreparable pains with the state of the party today against the vast possibilities and potentials they brought to the table.

By 1999, the PDP leadership led by former President Obasanjo stood on the verge of fulfilling our destiny as the true giant of Africa. The goodwill passes for a national cult- the faith could move God and Nigerians with tears of joy and great expectations held hands in unison with the reverberation: Arise Oh Compatriots across the land.

Under this party, for the first time in our history, religion, ethnicity, and regionalism took the back seat because Nigerians were ready for a fresh start. PDP held the keys for a new future, but history presents broken expectations, desecrated covenants and misplaced trust. For 16 years, the party danced naked at the market square and continues today even while the song had stopped playing long ago.

Otherwise, how would you describe the goings-on in the party? Our people say the she-goat cannot go unaided during delivery with elders at home, but the party gifted with many grey hairs and wisdom is terrified, tired and troubled on all sides to face the realities and probably an eminent defeat come 2027.

If truth be told, an Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu you cannot defeat outside Aso Rock, that swarm against the leadership of his party, does not cut across like a man anyone can walk over as a sitting President simply because there is no opposition in this contraption called PDP.

The challenge is not that it lost the 2015 elections but a party of the strangest bedfellows massively infiltrated and run by lily-livered men who only roar on national dailies else why a former two-termed governor on the ticket of the party who took a ministerial position with the opposition could threaten instability in the PDP controlled state and the best done is to set-up a committee to do what precisely?

The goings-on in the party today is not necessarily the invincibility or enormous influence attributed to Mr Wike by some but a clear indication that the party is under a strangled hold by some hired undertakers and sponsored elements within the party leadership assigned the hatchet job to dismantle it before the next elections.

PDP, today, cuts the worst opposition party in the history of this country for not the lack of men but because filthy lucre and greed took centre stage. So, why would Mr Wike practically insult the PDP governors? If the party NEC is worth anything, why is the party so rudderless and clueless in providing formidable opposition and shadow government at the height of unprecedented angst and hate for the ruling party? Why so many discordance tones, pussyfooting and double-speaking by party spokespersons and supposed party stalwarts?

The beauty and strength of any modern democracy are consequent on the vibrancy and ferociousness of the opposition to keep the ruling party in check and demand better governance for the people. A beaten and broken opposition is a simple call for irresponsibility and godless adventures by the ruling party that will leave the governed harassed and impoverished.

So, in clear terms, the leadership of this party is suspect amidst countless accusations and its inability to be frontal enough to tackle the problems confronting it. Only yesterday, the governors pledged support for Governor Fubara- who had clung to power by sheer providence and the will of Rivers people. Some shameless members blame him for pledging to support the sitting President in the next elections, but why not? Since it is a game of survival and self-preservation without a shield from the party, Mr Fubara should have done worse and remained justified.

The voices of opposition in the country today are not from the political parties as collective fronts but from individuals and civil society groups demanding and fighting for good governance. Mr Peter Obi, the former Presidential aspirant of the Labour Party, has made some courteous efforts and his counterpart, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has also not hidden his resentment over alleged wrong policies by the present government, but uncoordinated, weak articulations and projection of the people’s plight will not change any government headed for disaster.

PDP has forgotten the strategies deployed by the APC in booting them out of office or lacks the will to reenact such tested arsenals. Can one say the socioeconomic conditions latched on by the APC force a change of government better than what is on the ground today? Could APC then boast of resourceful leadership and foot soldiers? Was the APC better funded while the PDP had the already looted treasury to prosecute the 2015 elections? Was the 2015 APC candidate not thoroughly damaged but cleverly sold to Nigerians as the messiah?

So, juxtaposing the PDP and APC pound for pound, capabilities, competencies and resources, was there any advantage other than the prevailing conditions post-2015 elections that changed the game? It is either the party’s leadership compromised or fraud if it cannot replicate the 2015 outcomes given the nation’s deteriorating conditions today. The party managers should adopt the strategy of the APC or come up with a similar blueprint to rattle the sitting government so that we may not necessarily waste our time and resources on another electoral process.

A party whose members collude with the opposition in exchange for political appointments, juicy positions at the national assembly or contract syndication cannot amount to anything in our political landscape.

If the leadership of the PDP cannot chart a clear path to improve its electoral fortunes in the next elections, it should disband, allow a credible opposition to emerge, and make the next contest worthwhile. This PDP is clogging the political opposition space and caricaturing what modern opposition should be. To upset the APC with the Jagaban and political maestro as the sitting President demands a rainbow coalition of the PDP, Labour, SDP and ANPP because standing alone cannot move the present political hegemony.

PDP should let Nigerians breathe because a party that cannot enforce discipline or is afraid to call erring members to order is wasting our emotions and faking being a credible opposition. The party appears troubled, tired and terrified, and the present political and socioeconomic trajectory demands more from the opposition.

Politics100 Yoruba Groups Warn Against Coup, Say South West Will Secede If… by Fareke(op): 7:50am On Sep 01, 2024
No fewer than 100 South-West groups under the aegis of the Alliance for Yoruba Democratic Movement, AYDM, have condemned calls for a military takeover, saying it is unwarranted.

The groups, which faulted the promoters in Lagos, said a military coup in Nigeria could result in secession.

AYDM insisted that the lasting solution to Nigeria’s social conflicts was ethnic self-determination, arguing that the potential of the Yoruba people had been stunted and it was time they left as an alternative to violence and coups.

Rising from its Pan-Yoruba-Itsekiri Global Summit themed: ‘Sustainable Democracy in Nigeria: The Role of Non-state Actors,’ the groups, in a communiqué, stated it was aware of the historic challenges faced by the country, but appalled by calls for a military coup coming from a section of the country.

The statement reads: “We are alarmed that some people in their desperation are calling for military rule. Let those who plan a return to dictatorship know that there will be no military rule in the entire Oduduwa territories. Our people will resist with all our strength even if it means armed resistance.

"Since 1914 forceful amalgamation of Nigeria, the potentials of the Yoruba people have been stunted and it was time for the Yoruba people to leave Nigeria as a viable alternative to ceaseless violence, killings and coups. We are alarmed that some people in their desperation are calling for military rule. Let those who plan a return to dictatorship know that there will be no military rule in the entire Oduduwa territories. Our people will resist with all our strength even if it means armed resistance.

"Those calling for military intervention are the same people solely responsible for the rot, the systemic decay, the persecution of ethnic groups and the laying of the very foundation responsible for the current challenges that confront Nigeria.

"The people calling for military intervention kept quiet for eight years when their candidate was the President of Nigeria with his parochial and self-serving policies which partly created the woes that currently face the country today; But in less than one year, they want the country to burn. There is a plot by some martial forces to stage a military coup and a comeback of the same forces that laid the foundation for the ruin of the country.

"Advocates of military rule are from a particular sector of the country doing so for parochial interests. These are ethnic far-right elements who want to control the country by all means. In their archaic tradition, they detest the fact that people have the right to vote and power has to shift from them. This is the only reason they are plotting to overthrow the minimum gains of democracy."

PoliticsTinubu May Shake Up Cabinet As Pressure Mounts On Ministers by Fareke(op): 5:24am On Sep 01, 2024
Two-third of ministers underperforming – Opposition

Strong indications have emerged that President Bola Tinubu is planning to rejig his cabinet to ease out underperforming ministers.

Tinubu has been facing increasing pressure from within and outside his party, the All Progressives Congress, to sack ministers some of whom appeared to have been inactive.

The President had last year set up the Result and Delivery Unit, headed by the Special Adviser to the President on Policy Coordination, Mrs Hadiza Bala-Usman, to measure the performance of ministers and other top government officials serving in his administration. He warned that any minister or aide that underperformed would be sacked.

Last week, Tinubu replaced the directors-general of the National Intelligence Agency and the Department of State Services after the heads of the agencies resigned their appointments.

Sources in the Presidency told Sunday PUNCH that a cabinet reshuffle was imminent.

The officials, who requested anonymity because they were not authorised to discuss the matter, revealed that some ministers would be dismissed, while others would be reassigned to other ministries for improved effectiveness.

However, the sources did not disclose the ministers likely to be affected.

“What I can tell you is some (ministers) will go. A few will swap positions, then new people will be brought on board. But the President will be focused more on capacity now; on people who can easily add value to his government”, a source stated.

Another source disclosed that Tinubu’s close associates agreed that the President required a stronger cabinet to implement his policies effectively.

The source stated, “The general concern among some of his aides, friends, and even the public is that the cabinet can be far better than this. There is a consensus among his (Tinubu) close friends that he needs a stronger cabinet to push through with his policies. It is one thing to announce policies and it is another thing for your ministers to deliver the outcomes you want. Oftentimes, it is the capacity of your cabinet members and heads of agencies that determines how you will deliver on those outcomes.

If you look at the editorial by Financial Times earlier this week, it was not palatable at all. And what they were saying is that, yes, he has taken bold decisions, the reforms are good, but he has a weak cabinet that cannot help him to deliver on those reforms. That is why it appears like we are wobbling. So, he needs to bring in people with more energy and expertise, who are more patriotic and willing to roll up their sleeves and work for Nigeria and turn things around.

“If the past one year has not been eventful, he cannot afford to waste another year. This next one year is very critical. It is the next one year that will define the government.”

'We expect nothing good from Tinubu, APC’

Meanwhile, opposition political parties have said they are not expecting anything good from the APC-led Federal Government.

Speaking to Sunday PUNCH, Yunusa Tanko, the campaign spokesman for a former Labour Party Presidential candidate, Peter Obi, said the party was more concerned with improved electoral reforms.

He said, “We are not really interested in whether Tinubu changes or sacks his ministers. One of the major areas we thought there would be an improvement in is our demand for electoral reform. If we have an improved electoral reform, it will inevitably give us a good opportunity for credible elections to take place.

“Sacking or replacing your cabinet with new people is an extension of state capture. He will only be replacing them with his loyalists which we know will be a strategy ahead of 2027. But if he is really serious about improving the performance of his governance at the moment, he can start considering reshuffling his cabinet. Quite a number of the ministers are not measuring up to expectations.”

Politics‘Don’t Interfere In My State’ – Wike Warns PDP Govs by Fareke(op): 10:00pm On Aug 31, 2024
By Seun Opejobi

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, on Saturday cautioned governors against any attempt to takeover the Peoples Democratic Party structure in Rivers State.

Speaking at the PDP Secretariat in Port Harcourt during the party’s state congress, the minister vowed to set fire in the state of any governor who attempts to interfere in the crisis in Rivers State.

PDP governors met in Taraba State on August 23 and weighed in on the crisis rocking the party in the state and backed Governor Sim Fubara.

In a communique read by the chairman of PDP’s governors forum Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, the governors called for a review of the party congress outcome to restore Fubara’s leadership role in the state.

Condemning the call, Wike charged PDP governors to stay clear of the party’s affairs in Rivers.

He said: “Let me assure all of you, not while we live will anybody take away the structure of PDP from us. But let me tell people, I hear some governors who say they will take over the structure and give back to somebody.

"I pity those governors because I will put fire in their states. When God has given you peace, you say you don’t want peace, anything you see you take.

“Because I heard they got some money from a signature bonus, and so their heads are getting big that you will put a hand in my own state. Prepare because I have the capacity to also do the same thing in your own state.

“Whether you are from Bauchi, I don’t give a damn, whichever state you are from, as far as I know, that you are trying to put yourself in Rivers State, your hand will get burnt, and you will never sleep in your state.”

EducationRescind Ban On Benin Republic Varsity’s Certificate, Stranded Students Beg Tinub by Fareke(op): 3:34pm On Aug 31, 2024
By Dennis Naku

A visually impaired widow and over 600 students of the ESM University, Benin Republic, and their parents have appealed to President Bola Tinubu to reverse the ban on the institution’s certificate in Nigeria.

The distraught students who are on the scholarship of a faith-based organisation, ‘Omega Power Ministries’ and their parents cried to the General Overseer and their benefactor, Apostle Chibuzor Chinyere, in Port Harcourt, Rivers State on Friday, and lamented that the ban has brought agonies to them.

The students and parents, while fighting back tears, said they were shocked when they received news about the Federal Government’s decision on the ESM University, Benin Republic.

The undergraduates said withdrawing them from school when they were already making progress and after their benefactor had invested much in their education was tantamount to jeopardising their future.

Speaking to newsmen, one of the parents of the distraught students and visually impaired widow, Mrs Josephine Hycienth, said it was a huge relief when her son benefitted from the scholarship to study at the Benin Republic University, decrying the hardship she was experiencing since her husband’s demise.

She stated, “Nobody cares about us since after my husband’s death. I want President Bola Tinubu to come to our aid. They should not cancel their education.

“If my son is allowed to come back home, nobody will assist in his education, I need the president to help.”

On his part, a student of 200-Level Computer Science in the university, Moses Nicodemus, said he is already in the 200 level going to the 300 level, saying, “I came back to Nigeria for my Industrial Training only to hear that my school is not accredited.”

He added, “That is why we are calling on our President to come to our aid. Our father (the cleric) has spent millions of naira on our education. We need help. We have tried to study to come out with good grades and certificates.”
Chinyere disclosed that before sending the students to the institution, he personally went to the Federal Ministry of Education, Abuja to ascertain the credibility of ESM University, and he received a positive affirmation.

While expressing dismay at the development and the turn of events, he appealed to the wife of the President, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, to prevail on her husband to consider the danger of abruptly stopping the students’ education.

Chinyere stated that he has invested hugely in the academic development of the students, emphasizing that the funds spent on them were the proceeds from church offerings and tithes which according to him he has vowed to use in capacity building and reaching out to underprivileged people.

He said, “Before I started this scholarship, I personally went to the Ministry of Education, Abuja, to verify if ESM is accredited. Also to verify if the graduates of the school will be able to participate in NYSC in Nigeria. And all these were confirmed positive before I paid the first school fees. It was that guarantee that I got from the education ministry in Nigeria that made me send students on scholarships to the school in Benin Republic.

"Yes, I have many students on scholarships in Nigeria; why send students to Benin and other countries for studies? The issue is that the system (government) made education very strenuous for students, and the government policies made education very difficult. Every day, people come to my house for scholarships: less-privileged, widows, orphans etc. I have more than 4,000 students currently on scholarships right now. I am not talking about the people that have graduated.

"Only in the Benin Republic alone, I have spent more than N500m from offerings and tithes that come to the church. I am not talking about other places. Do you want this money to go and they will come and start afresh? There are ways you can assist these students by strengthening the policy instead of putting more burdens.

“Please President Bola Tinubu, I know you are a father. Look at these parents, look at these children and reconsider. Let this policy be reversed so that these children can return to school.

"They are supposed to go back to school this September. Putting in money for them again from the beginning is not possible. These monies are from offerings and tithes to help people.”

HealthMy Wife Was Pregnant With 11 Babies For Three And A Half Years – Cleric by Fareke(op): 5:20am On Aug 31, 2024
By Tunde Oyekola

When Alhaji Yahaya Imam Nafiu, an Islamic cleric and Missioner of the Ilorin Emirate Development Progressive Union in the Republic of Benin, received the unexpected news that his third wife had given birth to not just one, but 11 babies, he was overwhelmed by the sheer enormity of the situation. The news left him feeling jittery, and the reality of the financial strain and responsibility of caring for eleven newborns almost made him run away. In an interview with Tunde Oyekola, he recounts his initial fears and how he tried to come to terms with the overwhelming responsibility.

Recently, news broke that your wife gave birth to 11 children. How did you feel when you received the news?

My wife, Chognika Latoyossi Alake, who is a native of Ajasse-Cotonou in Benin Republic, gave birth to 11 children in Porto Novo in two tranches. She first delivered six – five boys and one girl – on July 6 and 7, 2024.

On August 14, she gave birth to another five boys. Unfortunately, one of the girls from the first set passed away about one and a half hours after birth, and we later lost another baby. Currently, we have nine surviving children, and they have all been named.

Were these children her first?

No, they are not her firstborn. Latoyossi is my third wife. I had two wives before marrying her. She was previously married and had three children in her first union. She became pregnant nine years after having her last child. This particular pregnancy lasted for about three and a half years.

I left Ilorin in 2008 for Porto Novo in search of greener pastures. I’m 56 years old while my wife, Latoyossi, is 54 years old.

A normal pregnancy is supposed to last nine months. What did you do when there was an unusual delay?

During that period, she visited hospitals, underwent various medical tests and scans, and had three surgeries. The most surprising thing was that each time doctors attempted to operate on her, the incision would close up again. The last doctor, a white man, said he had never encountered anything like it in his long medical career. The doctors also told us that unseen spirits seemed to be interfering whenever they attempted to operate. After exhausting the options at government and private hospitals in the Benin Republic, we turned to traditional birth attendants.

What do you think caused the extended pregnancy?

I’m not certain about what caused it, as it wasn’t her first pregnancy. As I mentioned before, she had three children from her previous marriage. However, I suspect it might have been due to some malevolent forces. We were all deeply concerned when she couldn’t deliver the babies within the expected timeframe.

Were the children born via caesarean section?

No, they were delivered naturally by their mother. They were born at a traditional birth attendant’s home.

Did the doctors confirm there were babies in her womb?

Yes, medical tests confirmed she was pregnant, but the scans didn’t reveal the number of babies. They only indicated that she was carrying babies.

When you were informed that she delivered 11 babies, what was your reaction?

The 11 babies weren’t delivered all at once; they came in two tranches. When I received the call that my wife had delivered six babies, I was terrified because the news was so shocking. Although I had heard of such things happening in other countries, it was unprecedented in Nigeria or the Benin Republic. Initially, I didn’t believe it. I asked about my wife’s condition, and they assured me she was fine. I wanted to speak with her, but they said it wasn’t possible at that moment. At one point, I considered fleeing because I couldn’t fathom how I would feed eleven children in addition to the others I already had. But eventually, I decided to go and see them, believing that Allah, who gave them to us, would also provide for their needs.

What happened next?

About a week after delivering the six babies, my wife began to complain of stomach pain and had difficulty eating. Despite the traditional birth attendant’s advice not to take her elsewhere, we decided to visit a hospital. The doctor there recommended another scan, which revealed that more babies were still in her womb, though the exact number wasn’t clear. We returned to the traditional birth attendant, who admitted that he had known there were more babies but didn’t want to alarm her. He instructed us to return when she showed signs of labour. When she started experiencing labour pains, we took her back, and she delivered another five boys, one of whom later passed away. The last set of babies are two weeks old and are all healthy.

As an Islamic cleric, how do you describe the birth of 11 children by a single woman?

The birth was nothing short of a miracle from Allah; something no human can fully comprehend. It is an inexplicable wonder (Ise Olorun ni, awamaridi si ni ti enikankan ko le mo).

Are twins common in your family?

No, twins are not common in my family. Only one member of my family has given birth to twins and they are two girls. Since then, no member of my family has had multiple births.

What has it been like feeding the babies?

The first five babies were breastfed by their mother for the first few days, but she soon became overwhelmed, and we had to switch to formula. They consume three containers of formula daily.

How are you coping with this situation?

Although we are not wealthy, we are relying on Allah, who blessed us with these babies. We are appealing to both the Federal and Kwara State governments, as well as to philanthropic individuals in society, to assist us in caring for these gifts from God.

Christianity EtcNigeria Sitting On Ticking Time Bomb – Catholic Bishops by Fareke(op): 9:20pm On Aug 25, 2024
By Adeyinka Adedipe

The Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria on Sunday described as worrisome the state of the nation, noting that Nigeria is presently “sitting on a ticking time bomb” under President Bola Tinubu.

The Catholic body of Bishops also said that as long as the issues of poverty, hardship and corruption continue to be the lots of Nigerians, the nation should be ready to contend with more protests.

They also expressed grave concern about the nation’s growing debt burden adding that “servicing huge debts to international monetary agencies and sourcing for funds internally to balance budget deficit led to the economic reforms of Mr President, consisting mainly in the withdrawal of fuel subsidies and the floating of naira.

President of the Catholic body, who is the Archbishop of Owerri, and the President of the Catholic Bishop Conference of Nigeria, Most Rev. Lucius Ugorji, stated this in his welcome address at the opening Session of the 2024 second Plenary Assembly of the CBCN taking place in Auchi, Etsako West Local Government Area of Edo State.

While declaring the Conference open, Ugorji said the future of the nation depends on how the challenges bedevilling the nation are tackled, expressing optimism that trust in God would transform the country.

On the state of the nation, he said, “On August 4th, President Bola Tinubu enumerated the achievements of his administration. While we recognise that notable progress has been made in some sectors of our national life, we cannot fail to admit that the present state of the nation is worrisome. Even though insecurity remains one of our major challenges.

"As our national economy continues to decline, the Nigerian youths embarked on a nationwide protest tagged # EndbadGovernance from 1 to 10th August 2024.

"The protest was aimed at publicly voicing their disappointment and frustration on the ills bedevilling the nation. Although Nigeria has the constitutional right to express its grievances through peaceful protests, there was widespread concern it could be hijacked by miscreants.

“Likewise, we condemn in strong terms the killing of some protesting youths by security operatives. We pray for the repose of the dead, the speedy recovery of the injured and the consolation of the bereaved.

"We wish to stress that as long as the nation is afflicted with poverty, hardship and corruption, and as long as the future of youths in our nation remains bleak, we continue to experience protest. Rather than address the ill, trying to drown the nation, some government officials are busy passing the buck and looking for a scapegoat.

“We are indeed sitting on a ticking time bomb as security operatives try to crack down on some of those involved in the protest and their sponsors on trumped-up charges.

"This raises concerns about whether they are trying to strip citizens of their democratic rights and freedoms to protest or give the impression that everything in the country is fine and there was really no need for the protest. This is delusional and condemnable.”

CrimeTwo Cops Killed In Abuja As Police, Shi’ites Trade Blame by Fareke(op): 6:33pm On Aug 25, 2024
By Nathaniel Shaibu, Solomon Odeniyi

The Islamic Movement of Nigeria, popularly known as Shi’ites, has alleged that the Nigeria Police attacked the peaceful Arba’een Symbolic Trek in Wuse, Abuja, killing and injuring many of the mourners.

The police, however, dismissed the allegations and accused the group of attacking its officers.

The Shi’ites were holding the Arba’een walk, the ceremonial trek that marks the end of a 40-day mourning period of the death of the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (SAW), Imam Hussain.

The Movement, in a statement on Sunday, signed by Sheikh Sidi Sokoto for the Islamic Movement and the Shi’ite leader, Ibraheem El-Zakzaky, said the walk, which was previously held in Masaka and Zuba axis on Saturday, was peaceful and successful.

They added that medical practitioners were currently attending to the injured protesters, adding that details of those killed, injured, and arrested will be made available subsequently.

The statement read, “We wish to inform the public that police have attacked the ongoing Arba’een Symbolic Trek at Wuse District in Abuja and killed numerous mourners. While trying to disperse the Arbaeen Trek, the police killed and injured numerous mourners.

“Presently, security agents are busy arresting the Arbaeen Trek mourners. Medical practitioners are attending to those critically injured, and details of those killed, injured, and arrested will be made available to members of the press in due course.

"Before the commencement of the trek, we have searched all participants to ensure no infiltration, and the programme will end as scheduled. The Arbeen Trek that was conducted yesterday at Masaka and Zuba axis ended peacefully and successfully.”

However, the FCT Police Command, in a statement by its spokesperson, Josephine Adeh, accused the Shi’ite members of carrying out an unprovoked attack on its personnel.

The police said the attack resulted in the death of two of its personnel while doctors are battling to save the lives of three police officers in the hospital.

Adeh said, “The FCT Police Command wishes to confirm an unprovoked attack by the proscribed Islamic Movement of Nigeria, popularly known as the ‘Shi’ite’ group, on some personnel of the Nigeria Police Force attached to FCT command at Wuse Junction by the traffic light, where two police personnel were killed, three left unconscious in the hospital and three police patrol vehicles set ablaze.

“The proscribed organisation attacked the police checkpoint unprovoked, wielding machetes, Improvised Explosive Devices (locally-made bombs in bottles with kerosene) and knives.

"While several arrests have been effected, the Commissioner of Police, FCT, CP Benneth Igweh condemns the unprovoked attack on police officers. He promises to bring those involved to book. The situation is presently under control and normalcy has been restored,” adding that “further development will be communicated in due course.”

PoliticsCrack Down On Kidnappers Or Resign, HURIWA Tells Tinubu by Fareke(op): 9:01am On Aug 25, 2024
The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has asked President Bola Tinubu to crush kidnappers or resign.

In a statement on Saturday, HURIWA deplored widespread insecurity marked by incessant kidnappings and killings across the nation.

According to HURIWA, the alarming state of security, particularly the widespread and brazen kidnappings prove Nigeria is a failed state under Tinubu’s leadership.

The human rights group said the current administration’s failure to tackle insecurity is a testament to its inability to effectively address the spiraling security challenges.

The group noted that in over one year since Tinubu assumed office, the situation has only worsened, with kidnappers becoming more emboldened.

“We are at a point where kidnappers will soon be going from house to house or even start demanding protection fees from citizens. This is because they have proven time and again that they can abduct anyone at any time, regardless of where they are in Nigeria,” read the statement signed by Emmanuel Onwubiko, its National Coordinator.

“There is no transparency within our security outfits. Corruption is rife, and impunity is the order of the day among the top brass. The President’s refusal to change the heads of these failed security departments suggests he is either complicit or simply too scared of the military to act decisively.

“If a government cannot guarantee the security of its citizens, it has lost its legitimacy. President Tinubu should, therefore, tackle insecurity sternly or resign immediately, as his administration has failed in its primary duty to protect Nigerians.”

HURIWA also criticized the National Assembly for its perceived negligence, accusing lawmakers of abandoning their responsibilities while Nigerians continue to suffer.

The group expressed outrage that the National Assembly went on a two-month recess despite the worsening insecurity, describing the legislators as “a bunch of gangsters, more like legislative bandits.”

“These legislative bandits are reaping enormous financial benefits while doing nothing to address the critical issues facing this country. Nigerians have tolerated these legislative bandits for too long. They have no vision for ending the insecurity because they are more concerned with their political ambitions, including eyeing the 2027 elections,” the statement read.

PoliticsN1billion Church Donation:APC Tackles Osun Governor Adeleke As Denies Wrongdoing by Fareke(op): 8:24am On Aug 25, 2024
The Osun State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has expressed disagreement with Governor Ademola Adeleke's donation of N1billion to the Cherubim and Seraphim Church in Lagos, alongside his siblings.

The Osun State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has expressed disagreement with Governor Ademola Adeleke's donation of N1billion to the Cherubim and Seraphim Church in Lagos, alongside his siblings.

In a statement on Saturday, signed by party chairman, Tajudeen Lawal, the APC criticised the timing of the donation, citing Osun State's near-insolvency.

Governor Adeleke has meanwhile denied the accusation explaining that there was no link between the donation and the state government.

But APC questioned the rationale behind the donation, describing it as a "squandering of questionable resources" when many pressing government obligations require attention.

While acknowledging the right to support religious groups, Lawal emphasised that such donations should be made with decency and consideration for the state's financial situation.

The APC described the donation of such a large sum for "frivolities" as morally wrong, sparking widespread criticism from various segments of society.

“It won’t be an overstatement to state that it was from the scarce resources of the Osun State funds that Governor Adeleke used as a mega donation in the remembrance of his mother in a church in Lagos.

comment on the overburdened queer manner of the governor’s comportment in the public which is at variance with his exalted position as number one citizen in Osun State, Governor Adeleke would save us the collective shame of wriggling his frame at the striking of two objects just the way he did at the Cherubim and Seraphim Church where he went to on his donation spree at a time he is yet to state any convincing statement on the N70,000.00 minimum wage for government workers in the state as approved by the Federal Government,” the APC chairman said.

In response to the allegations, Governor Adeleke's spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, denied the claims, stating that the N1 billion donation to the Cherubim and Seraphim Church's Centenary Endowment Fund was made by Dr. Deji Adeleke, the governor's elder brother, during a church programme in Lagos.

Rasheed emphasised that the donation was personal and had no connection to the state government.

He also highlighted Dr. Adeleke's previous donations to the state government during the COVID-19 crisis under the Oyetola administration and to the Federal Government, noting that Governor Adeleke was not in office at those times.

He reiterated that the state government and Governor Adeleke did not make any donations at the Lagos event, and that Dr. Adeleke's contribution was a personal one.

Rasheed also criticised the opposition for their reaction, suggesting that they were "hallucinating" and had previously made similar unfounded claims about the validation of Osun infrastructure projects by the engineering community.

“At the event in Lagos, neither the state government nor the state governor made any donation. The only donation came from Dr Adeleke who is more than capable of doing so as he had done to APC governments when Mr Oyetola and Muhammadu Buhari were in office.

“The other time, the opposition, shocked by wholesale validation of Osun infrastructure projects by the engineering community, ignorantly lambasted the highly professional and credible COREN/NSE team. Meanwhile, NSE had conducted similar exercises in the APC states of Lagos and Ogun. Isn’t the state APC hallucinating?”

PoliticsTinubu Already Knows Why He’ll Fail In 2027 – Eze Replies Okocha by Fareke(op): 7:49am On Aug 25, 2024
By John Owen Nwachukwu

Former National Publicity Secretary of the defunct New Peoples Democratic Party, nPDP, and chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, Chief Eze Chukwuemeka Eze has told the Chairman of the ousted Committee of the Rivers APC, Tony Okocha, that former Minister, Chibuike Amaechi will not have a hand in sacking President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027.

Recall that Okocha was recently quoted as saying that, “There is an intention to throw up Amaechi’s man and then he (Amaechi) becomes the APC leader and then uses the party to fight Mr President in 2027.”

Reacting through a statement made available to the media on Sunday, Eze cautioned Okocha to refrain from using Amaechi to cash out from his paymasters and their allies who feel threatened at the mere mention of the name and have been working surreptitiously to make him a subject of lampoon through smear campaigns and defamatory insinuations.

Eze reminded Okocha that “the cascade of administrative ineptitude, policy summersaults and multi-layer corruption that has fanned the embers of hyper-unemployment, insecurity, food price hike and more form a veritable mountain of weapons with which Nigerians are armed to fight and oust Tinubu from office in 2027.”

The APC Chief said “it is even foolish for a mere mortal like Okocha to be talking about 2027, three years away from today, when no one is sure of the next minute of his life; like the Bible said in James 4:14 ….”

Furthermore, Eze urged Okocha and his irks to consult Tinubu and those who formed APC to ascertain who truly is the Leader of APC in Rivers and South South, noting that at the formation of APC, Tinubu was made the National Leader of APC, while Amaechi emerged South South leader and despite the Buhari’s entrance as President, Tinubu clinked to his position as national leader.

He admonished Okocha and those allegedly sponsoring him to “be concerned about the fact that the country once known as Africa’s giant has collapsed in all facets under the nose of Tinubu, and channel energy towards fashioning out solutions, if they have any, to the gamut of problems they have created impeding Nigeria’s progress.”

Eze accused Okocha of mobilizing a paid-protest in support of Tinubu which gulped over fifty million Naira without any effect, after his ouster by the court in order to remain in the good book of his paymasters and continually curry their cheers.

PoliticsTraditional Worshippers Demand New System Of Oath-Taking For Public Officials by Fareke(op): 9:49pm On Aug 20, 2024
Traditional worshippers in Ondo State in south-west Nigeria have demanded recognition for traditional oath-taking for public officers, saying it is more potent and efficacious compared to other faith-related oath-taking.

They contended that over the years, public office holders, after they were sworn into office with the Bible for Christians and Quran for Muslims, indulged in corruption and abuse of power and still go scot-free.

The Araba Awo of Oke Agbe, Ayobami Ogedengbe, suggested this at the celebration of Isese Day in Akure on Tuesday, explaining that traditional oath-taking would change the narrative as punishment would be immediate and fast.

To restore sanity and decency to public offices, Ogedengbe insisted, government should allow traditional oath-taking, adding that in Yorubaland, everyone understands the potency and consequences of violating such oaths.

According to him: “The current system in Nigeria has loopholes that compromise integrity. Our people know that the gods uphold integrity, and no Yoruba person would dare violate an oath taken before the gods.

"This will restore order in our system because an average African, especially a Yoruba person, fears the repercussions of swearing by Ogun (the god of thunder) or other traditional deities.

"They wouldn’t dare swear to something they don’t believe in. Swearing through traditional means adds to the potency of African traditional religion and its practices.”

Speaking on the occasion, the Araba Isese of Ondo State, Araba Folorunsho Adetunji, urged the Ondo government to declare August 20 a public holiday to celebrate the Isese festival.

“Isese Day is a celebration of our origins, showcasing the deeds of our ancestors, and encompassing our culture and customs,” Adetunji explained.

Foreign AffairsCivilians Flee Pokrovsk As Russia's Army Bears Down On The Key Eastern Ukraine C by Fareke(op): 8:01pm On Aug 19, 2024
By Alex Babenko | AP

POKROVSK, Ukraine — Civilians with small children in their arms and lugging heavy suitcases fled Monday from Ukraine’s eastern city of Pokrovsk, where the Russian army was bearing down fast despite a lightning Ukrainian incursion into Russia’s Kursk region.

Local authorities said Russian forces were advancing so quickly that families were under orders to leave the city and other nearby towns and villages starting Tuesday. Around 53,000 people still live in Pokrovsk, officials said, and some of them decided to get out immediately.

People of all ages boarded trains and buses with the belongings they could carry. Some wept as they waited to depart. Soldiers helped the elderly with their bags, and volunteers helped people with disabilities. Rail workers wore bulletproof vests.

Natalya Ivaniuk said the noise of explosions from Russian bombardments filled the air while she and her daughters, age 7 and 9, fled their home in the nearby village of Myrnohrad, which is less than 10 kilometers (6 miles) from the front line.

“It was terrifyingly scary,” she told The Associated Press. “We barely got out.”

Pokrovsk is one of Ukraine’s main defensive strongholds and a key logistics hub in the Donetsk region. Its capture would compromise Ukraine’s defensive abilities and supply routes and would bring Russia closer to its stated aim of capturing the entire Donetsk region.

One of Kyiv’s attempts to ease the pressure on its eastern front was the unexpected Aug. 6 incursion into Russia’s Kursk region, which among other goals aimed to unnerve the Kremlin and compel it to split its military resources.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Sunday the daring incursion is trying to create a buffer zone that might prevent further attacks by Moscow across the border, especially with long-range artillery, missiles and glide bombs. That operation was continuing Monday under tight secrecy.

Russia’s relentless six-month slog across Ukraine’s Donetsk region following the capture of Avdiivka has cost it heavily in troops and armor. However, the onslaught has gradually paid dividends as Ukrainian defenders have no choice but to pull back from positions blown to pieces by Russian artillery, missiles and bombs.

“There is a lot of destruction around us, so it becomes more and more scary to stay,” said Tetiana Myronenko, 57, who came from Selydove just 5 kilometers (3 miles) from the front line.

She sat next to her husband in the car of a train waiting to leave Pokrovsk. It was bound for Lviv, hundreds of kilometers (miles) away in western Ukraine.

Russia wants control of all parts of Donetsk and neighboring Luhansk, which together make up the Donbas industrial region.

Officials warned last week that Russian forces were rapidly advancing and were just 10 kilometers (6 miles) from the outskirts of Pokrovsk.

Oleksandr Syrskyi, Ukraine’s Commander-in-Chief, said Monday that “heavy battles” were taking place in the Pokrovsk area.

The nearby town of Toretsk, whose capture would open the door for a Russian advance on the key stronghold of Chasiv Yar from the south, is also under heavy pressure, he said.

The Institute for the Study of War said Russian forces have been advancing roughly two square kilometers (0.8 square miles) per day in the Pokrovsk region over the past six months.

They have relied on frontal infantry assaults from village to village, notching incremental progress as they make their manpower and materiel advantages tell, the Washington-based think tank said late Sunday.

Pokrovsk officials were meeting with residents to provide them with logistical details on the evacuation. People were offered shelter in western Ukraine, where they will be hosted in dormitories and separate houses prepared for them.

In other developments:

A pregnant woman was killed and 10 others were wounded by Ukrainian shelling in the Russian-occupied city of Donetsk, the region’s Moscow-installed head Denis Pushilin said on social media. Two children were among the injured, he said.

In the Russian city of Proletarsk, about 270 kilometers (170 miles) from the Ukraine border, 41 firefighters needed medical attention, and 18 of them were hospitalized, in a fire at a warehouse that was started by debris from an intercepted drone, regional Gov. Vasily Golubev said.

Hanna Arhirova contributed from Kyiv, Ukraine.

PoliticsPolice Say Raided NLC Complex Floor Used By Suspect Not NLC by Fareke(op): 8:40pm On Aug 12, 2024
The Nigeria Police Force says it raided the second floor of the Complex of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Abuja last Wednesday in search of some incriminating documents to establish a case against an international “subversive” element who is a threat to Nigeria’s democracy.

Force spokesman Muyiwa Adejobi said on Channels Television’s Politics Today programme on Monday that the August 7, 2024 raid of the NLC Complex had a suspect housed by the labour union in one of its floors.

Adejobi said the second floor which has an office used by the suspect was raided, and not the 10th floor housing the NLC HQ.

"We recovered evidence to prove that the suspect is a threat to the nation, the man is a suspected subversive element,” Adejobi said.

Last Wednesday, the NLC said heavily armed security personnel stormed and raided its head office in the nation’s capital around 8:30 pm, and carted away documents.

The raid was condemned by local and international rights groups like Amnesty International, among others.

But the Force spokesman said some landlord-tenant relationship was established between the NLC and the global suspect whose syndicate members have been arrested.

Adejobi said the raid was unconnected to the recent #EndBadGovernance nationwide protests.

According to him, the police have embarked on a forensic investigation and the NLC would be needed in the probe of the suspect claiming multiple foreign identities including being a Russian and a Briton.

“The NLC is not the suspect here. We had a target and whatever it takes, we must get him at all means,” Adejobi said, hinting that the suspect travels frequently out of Nigeria.

The raid was not to get the man but to recover certain incriminating evidence and we have gotten what we want, Adejobi said.

The police accused the suspect of “subversion” and threat to “run down the country”.

“We have (uncovered) plans that people want to run down Nigeria. We have (uncovered) plans that people want to destroy our democracy, destroy our common heritage called Nigeria, and we cannot keep quiet…We are getting enough help and we will get this man,” he said.

PoliticsShaibu Impersonating Deputy Governor, Says Edo Govt by Fareke(op): 8:04pm On Aug 12, 2024
By Adeyinka Adedipe

The Edo State Government stated on Monday that Philip Shaibu is impersonating the deputy governor and should stop presenting himself as such.

A Federal High Court in Abuja reinstated Shaibu as the deputy governor of Edo State on July 17, three months after the Edo House of Assembly had impeached him.

Judge James Omotosho declared that Shaibu’s impeachment by the state assembly was illegal.

Omotosho ordered the Inspector General of Police to restore Shaibu’s security details and directed that his salaries and allowances be paid from April when he was removed from office.

The Edo Assembly has appealed the judgement and filed for a stay of its execution pending the determination of the appeal.

However, Shaibu, in an interview after his reinstatement, said the judgement that reinstated him was declarative and must be implemented before an appeal could be considered.

However, in a statement, Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, Chris Nehikhare, said, “It has come to the attention of the Edo State Government that the former Deputy Governor, Comr. Philip Shaibu has been corresponding with various institutions and organisations both within and outside the State in a clear case of impersonation.

"In the interest of these organisations’ safety, we want to reiterate that Shaibu is not the Deputy Governor of Edo State, and any correspondence from him in that regard should be disregarded and considered a forgery.

“The issue of his purported reinstatement is still active in court, with the next hearing for the two separate motions filed by the State Government and the Edo House of Assembly challenging the purported reinstatement by Justice James Omotosho scheduled for 24 September 2024.

"The State, through the Attorney General of Edo State and the Edo House of Assembly, represented by their lawyers, Oluwole Iyamu, SAN, and Ken Mozia, SAN, respectively, has sought an order for a stay of execution of the purported reinstatement, an order suspending the judgement, and a restraining order preventing Shaibu from presenting himself or attending any official function as deputy governor pending the hearing and determination of the appeal.

"Therefore, the status quo remains that His Excellency, Omobayo Marvelous Godwins, is the deputy governor of Edo State. Any correspondence carried out by any other person, including Philip Shaibu, constitutes impersonation, and anyone dealing with him does so at their own risk.

“Security agencies are hereby alerted to the potential breach of peace and are urged to hold Philip Shaibu accountable for any security breaches in the State arising from his actions.”

PoliticsNiger Delta Agitators Launch 'Operation Hunger Lion' Cancel All Ceasefire Agreem by Fareke(op): 7:02am On Aug 11, 2024
The Coalition of Niger Delta Agitators has cancelled the ceasefire it declared several years ago, and declared what it called "Operation Hunger Lion" over the present economic challenges Nigerians, especially the people of the Niger Delta, are facing.

The Coalition announced their decision in a statement issued on Saturday after their emergency meeting where they reviewed the State of the Nation, especially as it affects Nigerians, Niger Delta people and the present economic challenges in the country.

In the statement obtained by SaharaReporters, the coalition said it also demanded that the Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Mele Kyari, and his team be probed and made to account for the missing N164 billion, and hereafter sacked.

The coalition said, “We have observed that the present corruption in the country has reached its peak especially in the Ministry of Petroleum Resources, NNPCL, Power Sector, Education and Steel.

“While we waited and hoped for a change in attitude from the people saddled with the responsibilities in the aforementioned ministry and agencies, it is now obvious that they are not willing to change or toe the path of honour and be accountable.

“The Coalition unanimously resolved as follows: We hereby want to state that NNPCL being the current importer of petroleum products in the country has failed woefully, with a high level of corruption and fraud despite selling fuel for over N700 per litre, the citizens are subjected to constant torture and suffering before they can buy fuel.

“A kilogramme of cooking gas is over N1500 now and even kerosene is no longer affordable by the citizens anymore.

“Mr Mele Kyari and his team should account for the missing N164billion from the coffers of the NNPCL with immediate effect.

“This can only happen when incompetent and wicked people are saddled with responsibilities over the people.

“We want to state here that before the appointment of Mr Mele Kyari as the GMD of NNPC, the Port Harcourt and Warri refineries were still functional and production was at sixty (60%) percent.

“However, as soon as Mele Kyari took over as GMD of NNPC, all the refineries were automatically shut down for reasons best known to him as his cohorts despite the billions of naira budgeted by the Federal Government every year to revamp and resuscitate these refineries, yet none is working.

“Mr. Mele Kyari should explain the ownership of the Refinery in Malta where his cronies normally export our crude, refine and import it again to us at higher cost; the reason why they keep sabotaging every effort to make Nigeria’s refinery productive.”

The statement further noted “It is with deep sense of responsibility that we state here that NDDC and the Ministry of Niger Delta Development and Presidential Amnesty Programme is a scam, conduit pipe and not useful to the people of the Niger Delta.

“The Ministry of Niger Delta has not executed any life-touching project or intervention in the region while NDDC at the other hand is being used as a conduit pipe by politicians at the detriment of the Niger Delta people.

“It is pertinent to note that the road projects constructed by NDDC in the Niger Delta region are substandard and do not usually last up to three years.

“The government should release funds owed to the NDDC and Ministry of Niger Delta to fast track development in the Niger Delta region while we call on the government to probe the past Board of NDDC and former Ministers in the Ministry of Niger Delta over failure and fraud.”

“We demand immediate sack of Mr. Mele Kyari, top Management of NNPCL and subsidiaries. While we call on the government to prosecute these individuals over fraud and embezzlement.

“We demand a probe of Mele Kyari and his team over the missing billions of naira as alleged by the Office of the Auditor-General of the Federation.

“We also call on the sack of the Minister of State, Federal Ministry of Petroleum Resources – Oil and the Minister of State, Federal Ministry of Petroleum – Gas over incompetence and corruption; this is because they have failed Nigerians at this critical time.”

Henshaw, for Bakassi Freedom Fighters; Major-Gen. Ibinabo Horsfall, for the Niger Delta Movement for Justice; Major-Gen. Duke Emmanson, for Niger Delta Fighters Network; Major-Gen. Inibeghe Adams, for Niger Delta Freedom Mandate and Major-Gen. Abiye Tariah, for Niger Delta Development Network.

Others are Major-Gen. Joshua Ebere, for the Renewed Movement for Emancipation of the Niger Delta; Major-Gen. Foreign AffairsUS Astronauts On Boeing Spacecraft Billed To Spend 8 Days May Be Stuck In Space by Fareke(op): 6:49am On Aug 08, 2024
Astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams, originally slated for an eight-day space mission, face an extended stay until early 2025 due to unexpected delays.

Their arrival at the International Space Station (ISS) on the inaugural Boeing Starliner spacecraft has been prolonged by technical issues with the vehicle, forcing a longer-than-anticipated stay in space.

According to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the astronauts may need to be rescued by the rival SpaceX CrewDragon spacecraft, which won't be available until February, New York Post reports.

NASA is an independent agency of the U.S. federal government responsible for the civil space program, aeronautics research, and space research.

"As delays persist in the Boeing Starliner's return journey, a contingency plan is being explored to ensure the astronauts' safe return. Fortunately, Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams are secure at the ISS with ample resources and continue to perform tests and gather valuable data on the spacecraft's performance. NASA and Boeing are collaborating to identify and rectify the technical issues promptly. The astronauts' safety remains the paramount concern, and all possible solutions are being considered to facilitate their swift and secure return to Earth.

During a news conference on Wednesday, NASA revealed an additional delay in the return of astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams, announcing that it is now exploring an alternative plan involving SpaceX's Crew-9 mission. If upcoming tests indicate that returning on the Starliner poses too great a risk, NASA's Commercial Crew Program manager, Steve Stich, confirmed that Wilmore and Williams will be forced to return to Earth on Crew-9's scheduled flight in February 2025.

“We have been working with SpaceX to ensure they are ready to respond with Crew-9 as a contingency,” Stich said.

"We need to probably decide, likely in the middle of August, one path or the other to go ahead and meet the launch date for Crew-9,” he added.

Willmore and Williams were meant to spend just eight days in space following their launch aboard the Boeing Starliner on June 6 — the maiden crewed voyage for the spacecraft.

Once in space, the crew found a series of concerning helium leaks and thruster failures that have left NASA and Boeing scrambling to find a solution.

Should SpaceX, a Boeing rival, be tapped to bring the astronauts home, it could spell another embarrassing blow to the embattled aerospace giant.

PoliticsHardship: Why We Haven’t Fulfilled Promise To Donate Half Salaries – Reps by Fareke(op): 9:46pm On Aug 07, 2024
By Seun Adeuyi

The House of Representatives has explained why it is yet to donate half of its members’ salaries as promised.

In July, members of the House agreed to cut their salaries by 50 percent for six months as part of their solidarity and sacrifice to support the economic hardship and hunger Nigerians are going through at the moment.

This followed the adoption of an amendment to a motion’s prayer moved by the Deputy Speaker of the House, Benjamin Okezie Kalu, on the need for lawmakers to sacrifice 50% of their N600,000 monthly salaries to support Nigerians in view of the hardship.

In a statement on Wednesday, Rotimi Akin, spokesperson of the lower chamber of the National Assembly, reaffirmed the commitment of the House to the 50 per cent deduction in their salary.

"We acknowledge and regret that this resolution was not implemented by the bureaucracy as intended for the month of July.

“Resolutions of the House are ratified when the votes and proceedings of plenary are adopted on the next legislative day. Consequently, the bureaucracy was only formally instructed on July 23,” the spokesperson said.

According to him, the delay in the implementation was due to necessary administrative procedures and coordination with financial institutions.

He added that instructions for adjusting salaries had since been issued and would be enforced moving forward to ensure its pledge is fully realised.

"There is nothing to investigate, as some media houses reported, as the House’s position on this matter had been provided to some journalists who had reached out for clarification.”

While calling for patience, he assured the House of its steadfast adherence to its pledge and sustained efforts to earn the trust and confidence of all Nigerians.

He also clarified that each member of the House takes N600,000 as monthly salary against N900,000, which is being speculated.

“The House of Representatives has been inundated by some media outlets reporting claims of discrepancies in the salaries of members, suggesting that we received 100 per cent of our July salaries. The report claimed that our salary amounted to N936,979.

"We wish to clarify that the actual monthly salary for members is N600,000, after deductions for advances such as housing, which are paid at the commencement of the tenure,” the statement said.

Meanwhile, the spokesperson said the House member who displayed his salary on a TV programme was an exceptional case because he assumed office through a court decision many months after the onboarding process was concluded.

PoliticsUPDATED: Look Beyond Present ‘temporary’ Pains, Tinubu Begs Nigerians by Fareke(op): 9:20pm On Aug 07, 2024
By Adekunle Sulaimon

President Bola Tinubu has pleaded with Nigerians to be patient with his administration, assuring them that the country is transitioning from darkness to dawn.

In an official video released by the State House on Wednesday, Tinubu acknowledged the ongoing hardships orchestrated by the removal of the fuel subsidy and the floating of the naira.

He noted that Nigerians’ pain was compounded by what he described as an “avoidable lag” between the subsidy removal and his helpful plans for the country.

He said, “Fellow Nigerians, this period may be hard on us and there’s no doubt that it is tough, but I urge you all to look beyond the present temporary pains and aim at the larger picture. All our good and helpful plans are in the works. More importantly, I know that they will work. Sadly, there was an avoidable lag between subsidy removal and these plans coming fully online.

"I plead with you, please have faith in our ability to deliver and our concern for your well-being. We will get out of this turbulence, and due to the measures we have taken, Nigeria will be better equipped and able to take advantage of the future that awaits her.

"For example, we shall fulfil our promise to make education more affordable to all and provide loans to higher education students who may need them. No Nigerian student will have to abandon higher education due to lack of money.

“Our commitment is to promote the greatest good for the greatest number of our people. On principle, we shall never falter. I assure you, my fellow countrymen and women, that we are exiting the darkness to enter a new and glorious dawn. Now, I must get back to work in order to make this vision come true."

The president assured that the measures his government has taken would get the country out of the lingering economic crisis.

This address marked the second time Tinubu has addressed Nigerians since the beginning of the #EndBadGovernanceinNigeria protests.

The protests turned violent in some states, including Kano, Abuja, and Kaduna, where demonstrators believed to be infiltrators were seen waving Russian flags and calling for a military takeover.

PoliticsProtest:Ex-Envoys, Former Mili Officers Worry As Demonstrators Wave Russian Flag by Fareke(op): 6:51am On Aug 04, 2024
Some Nigerians, including a former general and ex-diplomats, have expressed worry after some protesters in the ongoing #EndBadGovernance protest waved what appeared like the Russian flag.

They said the scene did not portend well for the country and warned Nigerians and the Federal Government to guard against foreign incursion.

The nationwide protest, which commenced on Thursday, August 1, was in response to the hardship experienced by citizens in the country.

No fewer than 17 people were reportedly killed by security agents, who also arrested many protesters across the country.

On Saturday, photos and videos of protesters in Kano waving the Russian flag went viral as the demonstrators chanted in Hausa, “We don’t want bad government.”

Some prominent Nigerians raised concerns about the security implications for the country.

A lawyer, Bulama Bukarti, said the images indicated the growing support for Russia in Northern Nigeria.

He wrote, “Two aspects of the ongoing hunger protest in Nigeria particularly intrigue me. Firstly, there is a small but growing support for Russia and a corresponding rise in anti-West sentiment, especially in Northern Nigeria. Some protesters in Kano carried the Nigerian flag alongside the Russian flag, and there have been calls from some participants for demonstrators to bring Russian flags and photos of Vladimir Putin to seek Russia’s assistance.

"More concerning is that these protesters do not seem to be affiliated with any pro-Russian group; they simply made amateur flags as observed by @Aliyussufiy who took the first photo, suggesting that this sentiment is developing organically. This trend is likely to expand, especially as malign actors may observe and exploit it.”

A former presidential aide, Bashir Ahmad, asked the authorities to monitor the situation and take precautions.

“This may indicate various underlying sentiments or influences that need to be carefully assessed and addressed by the government,” he added.

An award-winning journalist, Philip Obaji Jr. said, “President Vladimir Putin and Russia must be excited to learn that Russian flags were displayed by a number of protesters in Kano in northwestern Nigeria during today’s Enough Is Enough protest to #EndBadGovernace.”

Russia, an Eastern power, has been fingered in the coup d’etats in some West African countries, notably Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger.

The military governments of the three countries have also pulled out of the Economic Community of West African States being chaired by President Bola Tinubu of Nigeria.

A social media user, Kawu Garba, called on the Department of State Services to investigate the incident.

He said, “Why are the protesters in Kano raising Russian flags? Is Russia sponsoring protests in Nigeria to cause anarchy? @OfficialDSSNG needs to investigate this.”

Also, a political commentator, Kayode Ogundamisi, said the protesters might be ignorant.

He said, “Whichever of the divide that may be responsible for distributing those Russian flags, either pro or anti-protest, that person dey mad. You lot have ABSOLUTELY, no idea! Beware of what you wish for.”

The Force spokesperson, Muyiwa Adejobi, said he was not aware of the images but promised to get back to our correspondent. He had yet to do so as of press time.

The Director of Defence Media Operations, Maj. Gen. Edward Buba, and the DSS spokesperson, Peter Afunanya, did not pick their calls and had yet to respond to the messages sent to them as of the time of filing this report.

Security experts raise the alarm

Analysing the presence of the Russian flag, a retired Brig.-Gen., Bashir Adewinbi, cautioned Nigerians against conspiring with external forces to undermine the country’s democracy and security.

Adewinbi, while speaking with Sunday PUNCH, described the situation as unfortunate.

He said, “It is unfortunate that some Nigerians are waving foreign flags in a national protest. Our people should be careful; they should not create room for anybody to destroy our country.

"I must say that a coup can never happen in Nigeria. There can be no coup attempt against President Bola Tinubu. The security chiefs are with him and he has educated them. I don’t think any senior officer will come out and announce anything like a coup in Nigeria. We are all united, we are for the unity of the people, and we will maintain it. We will protect our democracy.”

A former Nigerian ambassador to the Philippines, Yemi Farounbi, called on the organisers of the protest to avoid any external influence.

Farounbi said, “It is an unfortunate incident to fly the flag of a foreign country during your protest. When you recall that there is Russian presence in Niger, Mali, Burkina Faso, and Congo, one begins to wonder that you may be having an externalisation or an external indication of an internal domestic protest against certain circumstances.

"It is tragic, and I do not think that is what the organisers wanted. Certainly, that is not what Nigerians want. They do not want Nigeria to become impacted by ideological warfare between the West and the East. They do not want to see a replacement of Russia-backed military action in Nigeria.

"It is unfortunate. Perhaps, it is a reason for the patriotic organisers of the protest to stop the demonstration before it becomes something that some people will take over from them or turn Nigeria to a pawn.

“Those who are supported by this Russian regime have broken away from ECOWAS to form a separate body. It is something that other West African countries should be wary of.”

A retired Director at the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Adesola Abolurin, called for the intervention of the Economic Community of West Africa States.

He attributed the call for Russian intervention in Northern Nigeria to the closeness of Niger Republic to the region.

Abolurin said, “This should not be unexpected given the volatile situation of that region, particularly since they are nearer to Niger Republic, so that is expected and, the organisers of the protest should have known that the protest will be hijacked by foreign agencies; where do they get the Russian flags from? They must have gotten them from across the border and one will expect that people will infiltrate our border from Niger and Somali and that is exactly what has happened now.

"The Russian flags must have come directly from the border. And the earlier the ECOWAS intervene in the crisis in the region, particularly in Niger Republic and Mali, the earlier they approach them, appeal to them to come back to the fold, the better.

“Already in Kano they have the issue of Emirship and this should have put into consideration by security agencies, but unfortunately, that was never done. They have a lot of problems already in the North, every little destruction in the North will escalate from the other side”.

According to him “other items recovered includes 303 bags of fertilizer, 54 Cartons of mosquito nets, two bags of Rice and office furniture”.

"You may recall that in anticipation of the planned protest, series of proactive measures were taken to prevent violence and protect lives and properties. He maintained that “all in that process, we community engagement and outreach programmes, monitored social media platforms, regular operation show of force, monitoring the activities of community leaders and influencers and expanded and all-encompassing town hall meeting organized by the state government”.

"Despite these efforts, on day one of the protest, some unscrupulous and unpatriotic elements who are bent on destabilizing the polity, decided to use and engage teenagers leading to violence and destruction of public properties especially at palliative shops Yalwawa, Shuwarin and Government House in Dutse metropolitan”.

He noted that “The teenagers have shown unruly behaviour, refusing to listen to our appeals. They have ignored warnings and pleas to desist from violence, instead choose to engage in destructive behaviour”.

“Their actions have results in widespread destruction of government properties and disruption of economic activities”, he emphasised.

He added that “based on the security advice and wider consultation with heads of security agencies, declared a 24hrs curfew across the state on 1st August, 2024 with a view to curtailing the spread of violence and also ensure the protection of lives and properties of the law-abiding citizens in the state”.

PoliticsShun Violence, Obi Pleads With #endbadgovernanceinnigeria Protesters by Fareke(op): 9:24am On Aug 03, 2024
A former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has called on the #Endbadgovernance protesters, to shun violence and give peace a chance in the country.

While addressing the tragic loss of lives during the nationwide hunger and hardship protest which commenced on Thursday, Obi in a statement late Friday via X, emphasised the importance of peaceful demonstrations.

Obi stated, “I wish to most sincerely pass my condolences to the families of all those who lost their lives in the ongoing #EndBadGovernance protests. I deeply mourn these brothers and sisters of ours, who have lost their lives in their struggle for a better nation.”

Acknowledging the protesters’ demands, Obi expressed hope that their voices would be heard, saying, “I do hope that their legitimate demands, within the law, will not go unanswered.”

He urged protesters to maintain a peaceful approach, stating, “I will continue to urge the protesters to be of good behaviour and remain peaceful in their actions. I encourage them to shun every form of violence, as we cannot build a new nation by destroying what we already have.”

Obi also called on security agencies to exercise restraint in their response to the protests.

“I also call on the security agencies to remain civil in their security of lives and property in the ongoing protests,” he said.

Obi further expressed optimism about Nigeria’s prospects.

“I sincerely believe in my heart that Nigeria will in the future rise, and the issues of hunger, poverty, insecurity, corruption, and mismanagement of public funds, will be confined to the past. Then, Nigeria will be one of the exemplary countries on earth, leading in human and national development,” he stated.

No fewer than 17 persons are feared to have lost their lives in the violence that have erupted as violence erupted in Abuja, Kano, Niger, Borno, Kaduna and Jigawa states during the protests.

Businesses and banks were shut, while major roads were deserted. The protest continued Friday as the police and protesters clashed in different parts of the country.

PoliticsMy Gov’t Executing Bold Reforms To Tackle Economic Challenges – Tinubu by Fareke(op): 6:41pm On Aug 02, 2024
By Baba Martins

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has said his administration is undertaking bold economic policies to propel Nigeria’s economy out of the downturn occasioned by multiple shocks in the global economy.
He also called for global cooperation among African countries to tackle their shared economic challenges and take advantage of opportunities.

The President spoke on Friday when he declared open the 2024 African Caucus Meeting at the Transcorp Hotel, Abuja.
Tinubu’s remarks are coming on the back of protests against harship which started on Thursday across the country.

He noted that although Africa was grappling with “numerous challenges across economic, humanitarian and social spheres,” countries on the continent must take necessary measures to translate opportunities in natural resources and human capital into growth, innovation and collaboration.

Tinubu, who was represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, said the African Caucus Meeting was an opportunity to brainstorm on the major “challenges and strategies for fostering inclusive growth and sustainable development in Africa”.
The theme of this year’s meeting, “Facilitating Intra-African Trade: Catalyst for Sustainable Economic Growth in Africa,” reflects the collective commitment of member countries to moving the continent forward economically.
Delivering his address titled, “A Shared Vision for Africa’s Growth,” President Tinubu outlined ongoing efforts by his administration in Nigeria to address the global economic challenges.
He urged African countries to improve the quality of life for people across the continent by ensuring that democracy, good governance, and economic institutions work together.
The President said, “As a government, we have initiated bold economic reforms aimed at steering our economy away from the downturns caused by multiple shocks in the global economy toward a path of recovery and resilience through significant economic transformation.
“Our reform efforts have been strategically focused on fostering fiscal and monetary efficiency, driving sustained long-term economic growth, and catalysing job creation in alignment with the SDGs’ priorities.
“We remain committed to optimizing our economic potential, delivering favourable outcomes for our citizens, and ensuring the overall sustainable development of the regional economy. Our efforts are yielding positive results, with improved macroeconomic stability and increased investment.”

President Tinubu described the caucus meeting as a vital platform to share experiences, forge partnerships, and chart a collective path forward.
“Africa’s story is one of resilience, creativity, and hope. Indeed, we have made significant strides in recent years, with many of our nations achieving remarkable economic growth, social progress, and political stability,” he added.

In his welcome address, Chairperson of the Caucus/Nigeria’s Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr Wale Edun, said, “Based on available data, 41 African countries are set for stronger growth of up to 3.8% from about 3.4% in 2022 and rising to 4.3% in 2025. These exceed the global average of about 3.2%.”

On his part, Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Mr. Olayemi Cardoso, emphasized the significance of the meeting, saying Africa stood at a “crossroads with unprecedented opportunities for development alongside significant challenges.
“To navigate this complex landscape and set the continent on the path of sustainable economic growth, we must leverage the support of our global partners,” he added.

PoliticsBayelsa In Darkness After Protesters Vandalise Power Towers by Fareke(op): 12:00pm On Aug 02, 2024
by Ebiowei Lawal

Bayelsa State has been thrown into darkness as hoodlums, suspected to be protesters against economic hardship, have vandalised two 132kV transmission towers in Igbogene community in Yenagoa Local Government Area, transmission towers that transmit electricity to the state from Owerri in Imo State through Ahoada in Rivers State.

Reacting to the issue, the Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Douye Diri, condemned the actions of the misguided perpetrators, saying that the vandals reportedly tampered with two transmission towers, T98 and T99, on July 29 in the Igbogene community, plunging the entire state into darkness.

The governor, in a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Daniel Alabrah, however, assured that the state government is already working with the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) to restore power as quickly as possible.

The managing director of Bayelsa State Electricity Company Limited, Engr. Olice Kemenanabo, who confirmed that the TCN officials were handling the situation, appealed for patience.

Kemenanabo, however, urged people in the state to be vigilant in order to curb the activities of vandals causing untold hardship to electricity consumers.

He also advised the public to report any suspicious activity around the towers to the security agencies, just as he warned vandals to steer clear of the facility in order not to worsen the situation.

The BECL MD stated that the latest incident had made it imperative for the TCN to take urgent steps to establish a work centre in Bayelsa, which he said is a call the state has been making since 2021.

According to him, this will enable ease of intervention and quick response when such a situation occurs.
