What is farm surveying? This is the measurement of the size of a farmland. It involves mapping out of production areas, and road paths on the farm. It's crucial in farm establishment. It can be done either with the use of a GPS or tape rule. The genesis of some failure in crop farming is the ignorant of farmland size by the farm owner. For instance a labour hired to weed a maize farm of one acre charge for the price of 1.5acre due to the lack of knowledge of the farm owner. Advantages of farm surveying 1. It gives the size of the farmland 2. It separates production areas from non-production areas 3. It helps in forecasting expected yield 4. It helps to plan budget 5. It also helps construction of irrigation Disadvantages 1. It involves another spending 2. It needs expertise As we're in dry season, for those that want to start farming next wet season this is the best time to start clearing and surveying of farmland. No Farmer! No Nation!! The time most farmers wait for is here. Here are the simple steps to follow in maize cultivation: 1. Look out for good potential buyers 2. Acquire land either lease or purchase, but i'll advise lease for a starter. 3. Get it cleared manually 4. Hire tractor to plough (turn) the soil 5. Get labourers 6. Purchase farm inputs (good maize seeds; fertilizers; and insecticides) 7. Plant your seeds after 2nd ploughing 8. Remove weeds either with chemical method with the use of selective herbicides or manual method with the use of hoe. Each with merits and demerits. Weeding would be twice during maize life circle 9. Fertilization: this would be carried out twice during the maize life circle. 10. Fumigation: spray the maize plants with insecticides when there's insects attack 11. Harvest: this is done when you must have confirm cob maturity. Note: Cassava can be intercrop with maize. Call 08108776718/whatsapp08059371220 for: hybrid maize seeds; fertilizers; insecticides; herbicides; biz plan and your farm establishment & management |
sagacious2016:no need of using herbicides, just clear, pack in to different part of the farm and burn before the rain become stable. You can whatsapp me through 08059371220 for proper discussion |
I'll advice you look out for cheap labour outside that area, because you'll still have to plough the land and it won't be possible for tractor to move. sagacious2016: |

Nigeria is known for two seasons, the dry (harmattan) and rainy (wet) seasons. I must tell you from my experience and point of view dry season farming is the best especially for vegetables (cucumber, watermelon, (tomatoes, pumpkin etc ), provided you have the resources (irrigation). My reasons; you can easily control the amount of water required, weeds problem is reduced, pests and diseases are minimal and above all more profit margin as most farmers especially southerners go to rest. No wonder the northerners are the king in vegies production. But do you realise that the southerners have more upper hand when it comes to farming, this because we're blessed with two seasons (wet and dry), yet we only utilize only one of the season (wet). Well the excuse I've come to know is that dry season farming is expensive. To be sincere I concur. But why can't we make the money during the raining season, to prepare the dry season? I can bet it that you would probably realise whatever you invest and make more profit than wet season. So what am saying in essence is that the rainy season is almost here so let's utilize this God given opportunity properly, make money and get prepared for the dry season. Because this where our forefathers got it wrong, they farm during wet and wait for the wet season. We must change that, and this is time we do that. Crops you can plant and harvest between 2-3months are; cuccumber, watermelon, tomatoes, maize and the leafy vegs. Common crops grown in the south during rainy season are cassava, yam, maize etc. It'll be good if you can intercrop your cassava farm with maize. You can call 08108776718/whatsapp 08059371220 for your farm establishment and management
