GOOD AGRICULTURAL PRACTICES (GAPs) IN VEGETABLES FARMING GAPs are the necessary things to be done before (pre-planting), during (planting) and after planting (post-planting). Before I go into details of these practices let me quickly do a little clarification about vegetables, this is necessary as some people believe vegetables refer to leafy produce alone. Vegetables can be classified into two categories, these are: 1. Fruit vegetables ( tomatoes, cucumber, watermelon, okra etc) 2. Leaf vegetables (pumpkin, celosia, amaranthus, cabbage, lettuce etc). With that classification above I believe we should be able to differentiate between fruit and leaf vegetables. So let now look into those practices. 1. Pre-planting practices: These are the things expected of a reasonable farmer that want to start production. First thing I will tell you before going into production is to get your market, because it is only when you sell your produce and make a reasonable profit that you’re a successful farmer. This is necessary as you will be dealing with perishable goods. Other things needed, are a fertile land either by purchasing or leasing and it should not be too far to your target market, source of water (borehole/ non-seasonal river), constant and cheap farm worker(s), farm tools and inputs. After all that are ready then you clear the land either manually or mechanically (using bulldozer), but I advise you get land where you don’t have much trees so that you can easily clear manually. This should be follow by ploughing and harrowing, mapping out of the production area from the road, bed making and mauring. After all that, set up your irrigation this can either be overhead or drip depending on your financial capability. Once you’re through with all these, then you’re good to go. 2. Planting practices: these involve sowing the right number of seeds per hole, using right spacing and depth. All these are necessary as they all affect the well being of the crops. 3. Post-planting practices: these involve thinning (reduction of plant population per stand); weeding (removal of unwanted plants on the farm), watering, tilling (loosing of soil particles), fertilizing at the right time, fumigation when needed at the right time, harvesting of produce when due and market. To learn more about this while not attend our seminar coming up on the 11th of march, 2017. at choppies fast food hall, ojuelegba, surulere, lagos. or you whatsapp us through 08059371220 for farm establishment, and management. also training. thanks

If you want to go into plantain farming, this is rhe right time to do so. By clearing land before the rain starts fully COST ANALYSIS AND RETURNS OF PLANTAIN PLANTATION ON ONE ACRE OF LAND Analysing costs of production, two costs are to be put into consideration. Fixed and Variable Costs. Fixed costs: Land purchase(1acre): #250,000; Hoes, cutlasses, wheelbarrow, knapsack sprayer: #40,000; Plantain suckers: #105,000. Total Fixed Cost(TFC): #395,000. Variable cost: Land preparation: #15,000 Labour: #35,000 Manure + transportation: #50,000 Fertilizers: #96,000 Chemicals: #10,000 Total Variable Costs(TVC): #206,000 Total Cost (TC):#395,000+ #206,000 TC: #601,000 Returns: Average price of a dozen of bunches of big plantain: #8,500 * 58dozens =#493,000. Note1: the prices stated in the write up varies base on location and time Note2: plantain suckers were placed under FC, because you don't buy another suckers for other production, as plantain regenerate itself. Note3: also know that you should not expect profit in your 1st production, but if it comes, well thank your star. For a more detailed business plan for plantain plantation, supply of suckers, farm development and management call 08108776718/ whatsapp: 08059371220

Adegbem01:There are lots of good insecticides. I use K-optimal. Quantities to be applied will depend on the size of your farm land in the case of fumigation, and fertilizer application should be 2crowncock per stand. But I suggest you call for real practical training. To get all these right. 08059371220/0810877671220m thanks |
Dadanoah:K-optimal for insects

No Farmer! No Nation!! For the sake of the intending farmers, I will like to talk about cucumber cultivation. My focus points are pre-planting; planting and planting operations. 1. PRE-PLANTING OPERATION: this includes all the activities to be carried out before planting, just as when you're expecting a new baby. You're to make so preparation. Under this get a fertile land, clear either manually or mechanically where you have high number of big trees which I'll advise to avoid because of cost implication and probably lost of top soils. After land clearing is ploughing of land which means turning of the topsoil that contains nutrients with the use of tractor, next is mapping out of the production area and road withing the farm. Follow by making of beds with the size of either 15m by 1.2m or 20m by 1.2m depending on your choice or farm size. Add mature manure to the raised beds and mix the soil with the use of hoe. If it's during dry season wet properly before the next operation. 2. PLANTING OPERATION: cucumber is propagated through seed. Here on the prepared bed sow two seeds per hole with 80cm by 30 or 40cm spacing and cover gently with soil. Wet immediately during dry season. Wetting should be done early in the morning and in the evening if you're doing dry season farming. So that implies there should be provision for irrigation. 3. POST-PLANTING OPERATION: just as we care for our baby, so we do to our cucumber because it's a living thing too and the more you care for it the good the good the returns you get. So after planting other operations are watering (during dry season), fertilization, weeding, staking, fumigation (in the case of pests or disease emergence). (a) Fertilization: this should be done twice 1st 2weeks after planting with the use of NPK 15:15:15 and NPK15:15:15 and urea in the ratio 2:1 2weeks after before flowering. Water immediately after fertilizer application. Note: quantity and type of fertilizer should be base on soil test, but I choose NPK 15:15:15 because it's suitable to all vegetables. (b) watering : this is done during dry season farming. And it should be done in the morning and evening when the temperature is low. (c) Weeding: to have a good production, don't allow weed on your beds. This is best done with the use of hole. (d) Staking: this involves supporting the stem of your plant with a twine to a rope hat runs through the centre of the bed and attached to the either end of the bed. This help prevent trailing of the stem on the ground. (e) Fumigation: it involves attacking pests and diseases with the pesticides suitable for the type of insects attack, using a knapsack sprayer. (f) Harvesting: all things been equal forst harvest is after 6weeks of planting and 2nd and 3rd harvests. In most cases 2nd harvest is the most highest. (g) Marketing: before going into production try create your market. Cucumber is usually packed in a 25kg sacs. Thanks a lot for taking your time to read this piece of my write up. Don't hesitate to call 08108776718/ whatsapp 08059371220 for general farming (crops, poultry, fishery, piggery) consultation, farm management, establishment and training, and business
