Most Nigerians anticipate an increase in the prices of goods and services as festive season approaches. This article will open our mind to why this is so and how we can avoid this unnecessary fluctuation in price.
As another end of year festivity approaches, Nigerians are looking forward to the celebrations that come with the season and the time off to relax before kick-starting the New Year. In addition, the current economic recession facing the country maybe an impediment to the level of satisfaction citizen will enjoy during this festive season as most Nigerians would say they will minimize their end of the year spending, and some will say it will increase their end of the year spending amongst other factors.
Research has shown that majority of Nigerians (77 percent) anticipate a general increase in the prices of goods and services during this festive season and 51 percent of this proportion specified that food item would mostly increase.
However, most Nigerians don’t understand the reason why the prices of food products increase when the festive season approaches. I will be explaining three major reasons why the price of food item rises during this period
Demand and supply.
The purchasing power of consumers generally increase during the festive season, perhaps, because they will have to feed themselves, families and friends, therefore, the demand for food product of an average Nigerian increases during this period.
Production and/or supply also increase during the festive period. For instance, farmer that produces 100 chicken in off-season, increases it production as festive season approaches because of high demand. However, the demand for some food product exceeds supply or production which invariably result to in increase in price of some food product.
Cost of transportation:
During this seasons, many town and cities are emptied as most people who have moved to the cities return to their ancestral home towns and village to be with their family they may not have opportune to see in the entire year while living in the city. In our experience, some Nigerians prefer to travel before the festive period due to high cost of transportation and huge traffic. During this festive period, there is usually huge traffic which cause drivers to increase transport fare. This increases the cost of production and therefore, increase in price of food product.
Sellers’ greed. Lack of price control cause many sellers to ridiculously increase the price of food products for no reason. In fact, some sellers will hoard their product so as to sell them for ridiculously huge amount as festive season approaches.

We all have heard and know that farmers feed the world but how?
Unfortunately many don’t care about how this is possible (once their delicacy is on the table nothing else)

This backstage story
For farmers to feed any nation and people it lies heavily on distribution, distribution is how the food gets to you. Get to your doorstep, kitchen, and table. This story is just beginning because the geographic distribution of agriculture production is more north than south.
While this is true, the journey of farm produce is alarming, hazardous and the worst part is traders' greed.

Part 2: Traders’ greed
Traders of this our must-have items have gone through a lot of logistics, networking to get this item in their retail shop. But like other traders that want to be the most to gain from this supply chain.
They definitively deserve it after some have gone to the north to get items and store them.

But not at the expense of our health with heavy storage chemicals, and re-bagging. This then tilts the story for the farmer and now new entire produce, kind of originated by the retailers.

Let us continue
Have you bothered to see where re-bagging is done, you will observe this is done with no particular care for the produce. Produce like rice especially the ones from the industry doesn’t just have stone but with re-bagging, alteration, and resealing come some of this.
We said the produce was re-originated by retailers because some brands we see on our table are not produced from anywhere on the farm but are manufactured by our retailers, who choose what quantity and quality this have to be.

Part 3: Who to be blame
This story looks like side blame, but it has to also been since from the side of the retailers seeing that the margin on produce is negligible and to compete you have to follow the process that others are doing.
This increases among retailers since they are in more competition for consumer attraction than the wholesaler who has the advantage of less competition.

Part 4: Conclusion
What if I tell you it does not have to be this way, that we can bring transparency and traceability to all farm produce and in fact feed consumers with a lot more details about what they consume. This is what only technology can do, and that is why we are advocating for Agric eCommerce to disrupt the backstage story of our must have consumables. This story is not factious and also not to paint bad the open marketplace as that is the traditional way all of all have rely on.

But there has to be change and in the new system for it to work. I am an advocate of a new backstage story for Agric, and not just a new industry will solve it but the government have a huge role in this and that is why I believe Nigeria government through NIRSAL have launched SAT-C

There is a geographic distribution with foodstuff price, if you are not in the three categories above or not in food selling, catering as a business this might not really concern you.

The fact that a raw material you use to make the food is locally source (in closer market) will not get you more profit, simply because you are doing exactly what others are doing. So what you need to simply do is find a location they sell them cheaper and ship them in.

I know this might look like another much work, but like I said earlier. I am talking to the category of people in business because you already buy in bulk or better still you can predict your use of this products. Not to talk of foodstuff seller you need this to be in business, so how to be more profitable even this year is to acquire this products cheaper.

If you think source from cheaper sources is difficult, simply start by checking your rice price, beans price, garri, oil, etc from another geography add delivery and compare. I bet you it might still be cheaper because some retailer you buy from too gets it from that source and region.
