South-East and South-South groups rose from a meeting in Enugu, Friday, vowing to throw their weight behind the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB in order to facilitate the conduct of referendum for the actualization of Biafra. The 26 groups expressed outrage over the reported massacre of pro-Biafra agitators in Onitsha, Anambra State. They agreed to enlarge their coalition by consulting widely on the need or otherwise for the two regions to endorse the non-violence agitation of IPOB for a referendum to decide the future of Nigeria. The meeting’s singular agenda was the support or otherwise of IPOB in pursuit of a referendum. The meeting was convened by 82 year old NCNC and Zikist activist, Chief Mrs, Mariah Okwor, and Leader of the Igbo Women Assembly. Present at the meeting, were representatives of CAN, PFN, Traditional Rulers, Igbo Traders Congress, Ohanaeze Youth Forum, Igbo in Academia, South East Professionals, Niger Delta Youth Forum, Old Eastern Region Movement, World Igbo Congress, Igbo Survival Movement, South East Youth Congress, amongst others. The groups were angered at the silence of the South East Governors over what they called “the cold blooded massacre of 81 Easterners on Monday around Onitsha and environs during the 49thAnniversary of the Annual May 30thBiafra Day Ceremony.” Bishop Micheal Ibeneme of the Lords Salvation Gospel Ministry, who chaired the meeting, lamented the deliberate attempt by the Army to blackmail the youths, by claiming that the youths turned violent. “It is fabricated lies, the youths were deliberately murdered by the soldiers simply because someone in Abuja does not want to hear the name Biafra. Everybody knows those boys were not armed. “If a panel of enquiry is not immediately set up to bring to book those murderous soldiers, then the govt will be pushing all of us to join IPOB immediately. This mindless killing is unacceptable”. Speaker after speaker condemned in no uncertain terms what they termed “the attempt to silence the truth by taking away more than half of the corpses by the military.” The groups agreed to consult more widely and enlarge the coalition in other to take a definite decision on whether to publicly canvass support for IPOB in the light of the brutal suppression by the military. The groups agreed to meet on the 27thof June in Umuahia to take a final decision. Convener of the meeting Chief (Mrs.) Mariah Okwor, almost in tears bemoaned the cold blooded slaughter of unarmed youths, whose only crime is their desire for freedom from a repressive and mindlessly oppressive State. She warned that the Onitsha massacre will not be swept under the carpet. “This brutal genocide has clearly redefined the Nigeria reality. It is extremely difficult for any sane person to continue to support or even feel safe in any state where cold blooded murder by the state has become an everyday occurrence”. She continued that, “The 81 young souls massacred on Monday has changed the dynamics, everybody now sympathizes with the boys, and we will meet on 26thJune in Umuahia to announce our total support for an early referendum on the fate of this country called Nigeria. “We are totally shocked at the ruthlessness and wickedness of killing our children in cold blood. Our governors by their silence are only trying to isolate themselves from the people. Soon the people will mass up on one side and Buhari, the soldiers and the governors on another side. They will soon fire out that they are Leaders without followers.Everybody is mourning. The killings are unacceptable”. Meanwhile, in another development, the founder of Igbo Youth Movement and deputy Secretary of Igbo Leaders of Thought, Evangelist Elliot Uko, has appealed to all aggrieved youth of Eastern region to remain non-violent in their agitation for justice and equity, assuring them that the masses are with them. Uko, who was addressing Student Union Leaders from 44 tertiary institutions from the South East, said the injustice in Nigeria can never be solved by killing unarmed youth and then turn round to falsely accuse them of attacking military man. He said, “We all know IPOB are not armed, and we plead with them not to succumb to pressure and temptation to take up arms. The people are with them, that is the most important thing. I can tell you that over 95% of our people are sympathetic to the IPOB and their sacrifices. “These mindless killings, have elicited so much sympathy towards their course. The decision to kill them was a terrible mistake. Now everybody is identifying with their course, even those who didn’t support them in the past now sympathize with them. “So, the decision to kill them in order to scare them off and frighten them into backing off from their struggle has clearly backfired. The Aba massacre of February 9 and the Onitsha massacre of May 3o have won millions of converts for IPOB; the killing was a terrible mistake”. “Uko said the funeral for the 81 persons killed in Onitsha should be peaceful and every effort must be made, not to fall into the trap of getting violent. Resort to violence will make IPOB loose the huge sympathy it is enjoying today. They must remain non-violent.” He added that “the whole country is paralysed with fear and apprehension over uncanny developments in the land. While the military were busy mowing down unarmed youth in the east on Monday, Islamic warriors were busy same day lynching innocent easterner in niger state over allegations of blasphemy. Yet another igbo woman was also lynched in kano market Thursday evening. We are now in a state of fear and foreboding.” http://dailypost.ng/2016/06/03/biafra-day-killings-south-east-south-south-groups-gear-up-for-referendum/ |
A Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Aare Afe Babalola(SAN), has canvassed for return to regional government for Nigeria to recover fully from its economic woes and myriad of challenges confronting it. The founder of Afe Babalola University, Ado Ekiti(ABUAD), said having a central government with a president directing the affairs of a large and multiethnic and religious nation like Nigeria had been the reason why the country has failed to develop. The senior lawyer said this in Ado Ekiti at the weekend, during a programme tagged ‘diplomatic talk’ organized by the Department of international Relations, where Malaysia High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mr Lim Juay Jin was the guest speaker. Babalola said: “I have attended three conferences in Nigeria and return to regional government has always been my position. Nigeria consists of over 300 ethnic groups and with different religious bias, so what we need is confederation or loose federalism, where each region will be allowed to grow at its own pace and contribute to the centre. “This has been the practice in USA, Australia and Canada. But in Nigeria, we have a central government , where only one person determines what happens everywhere. In the past we had regional governments where each was allowed to develop and Nigeria was better off then. “Nigeria has six geopolitical zones and these can be allowed to function as component parts and Nigeria will be good for it. During the regional government, Nigeria was growing faster. Malaysia is a very small country with a population of about 30 million and this makes it easy to govern. “If Nigeria has been operating the regional government, we would have developed even better than Malaysia. Our fore fathers considered the population, land and resources as very large, that was why they introduced regional government. It has always been the smaller, the better”. Delivering his lecture, Ambassador Jin, who described ABUAD as a new face of Nigeria education, insisted that Nigeria should have made very good exploit in eco and medical tourism, but for pervasive insecurity in the system. He assured that Malaysia will strengthen its business relations with Nigeria because of the integrity of the President Muhammadu Buhari’s government and its hostile disposition to corruption. “ABUAD is a place where you can study under a peaceful atmosphere. It has a good environment and a complementary state-of-the-earth infrastructures where student can learn and deliver. I know the graduates will be change agents in the system because of learning and character that is in practice here. “One thing that has been of tremendous advantage to both Nigeria and Malaysia is that they highly educated workforce. I believe that if Nigeria can deploy this effectively, greatness will be achieved because hope of success has not been lost”, he said. http://dailypost.ng/2016/05/22/one-person-should-not-be-controlling-nigeria-afe-babalola-insists-on-regional-governments/?utm_source=dlvr.it_dp1&utm_medium=facebook |

Nigerian Military Covered Up Zaria Massacre, Dug Mass Graves And Buried Shiite Members Alive—Amnesty International. Amnesty International has accused the Nigerian military of taking measures to cover up its troops’ massacre of Shiite Muslims in Zaria, Kaduna State last December. In a report released today, the international human rights and advocacy organization gave a detailed account of the Nigerian military’s massacre of Shiite Muslims in Zaria between December 12th and 14th, 2015. Amnesty International provided evidence not only that the military used excessive force against civilians, killing more than 350 people, but that Nigerian troops went to great lengths to cover up these crimes. Following the bloody encounter between the Shiites and soldiers, SaharaReporters was the first website to provide extensive evidence that the troops mowed down scores of members of the religious sect. SaharaReporters had revealed that the carnage happened after a confrontation between members of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN) and a military convoy that was escorting the Chief of Army Staff, General Tukur Buratai, to an event. Following the encounter, the Nigerian army alleged that the Shiite members had attempted to assassinate General Buratai. The sect vigorously denied the allegation. In its damning report, Amnesty International seemed to lend credence to the account given by the Shiites. According to the human rights organization, “the Nigerian Army has provided no evidence to substantiate its claim that IMN protesters attempted to assassinate the Chief of Army Staff or shot at his convoy, or that the protesters’ action warranted the degree of force used against them.” The report added, “the military reported one fatality and one casualty among its ranks during the initial clashes.” Yesterday, the Kaduna State government asked a Kaduna High Court to sentence fifty Shiite members to death for causing the death of one soldier. Amnesty International provided images to SaharaReporters depicting before and after photos of Shiite sites of worship destroyed under the order of the Nigerian military. The organization also provided images of suspected mass graves where the military reportedly hid the bodies of the victims of their carnage. Amnesty International disclosed that it “has identified the location of one possible mass grave in the Mando area near the city of Kaduna, where [Amnesty International] found a large area churned up by differs, with dried-up large vehicle tracks still visible at the time of the visit.” The pattern and behavior of the Nigerian military following the initial clash triggered widespread criticism. Lanre Olanrewaju, the chairperson of the Civil Society Network Against Corruption (CSNAC), told SaharaReporters, “If the military believed their actions to be lawful, then why should they go to such lengths to hide the dead bodies from the public and the families of the deceased? Their cover up shows the premeditation in their action to murder unarmed civilians.” Satellite images provided by Amnesty International show important Shiite religious sites or property belonging to the IMN leader, Sheikh Ibrahim Zakzaky, being demolished. According to the report, “after the incident, the military meticulously destroyed most of the evidence at the scenes of the clashes. Soldiers sealed the areas around Ibrahim al-Zakzaky’s compound and around the Hussainiya in the afternoon of 12 December 2015 and for several days afterward.” Amnesty International investigators found “that Ibrahim al-Zakzaky’s compound had been razed to the ground and the rubble removed, bloodstains washed off, and bullets and spent cartridge removed from the streets…several other sites belonging to the IMN in Zaria, including the Hussainiya, a recently created cemetery, a shrine dedicated to Ibrahim Al-Zakzaky’s mother, a media/film production center, and a research center, were also completely or partially destroyed in the days following the incident.” The Amnesty International report provided recommendations to various Nigerian institutions and authorities, including the Kaduna State government and the Federal Government. To the Kaduna State government, it is recommended that it “ensure that the Judicial Commission of Inquiry into the Zaria events…[be] impartial and thorough.” It also urged the government to ensure that the “Commission has the necessary means to carry out its investigation unhindered and the necessary powers to summon and compel the relevant civil and military authorities to cooperate fully.” Amnesty International recommended that the Federal Government “ensure [that] those suspected of being criminally responsible are held accountable through fair trials…and that families and dependents of the victims of extrajudicial executions and other unlawful killings are entitled to obtain fair and adequate reparation from the state, including financial compensation.” The Nigerian military has not offered a public response to Amnesty International’s report at the time of publication. http://saharareporters.com/2016/04/21/nigerian-military-covered-zaria-massacre-dug-mass-graves-and-buried-shiite-members-alive
